A Revisit Of The Equilibrium Assumption For Predicting Near-Wall Turbulence, Farid Karimpour, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
A Revisit Of The Equilibrium Assumption For Predicting Near-Wall Turbulence, Farid Karimpour, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this study, we revisit the consequence of assuming equilibrium between the rates of production (P) and dissipation (∈) of the turbulent kinetic energy (k) in the highly anisotropic and inhomogeneous near-wall region. Analytical and dimensional arguments are made to determine the relevant scales inherent in the turbulent viscosity (νt) formulation of the standard k-∈ model, which is one of the most widely used turbulence closure schemes. This turbulent viscosity formulation is developed by assuming equilibrium and use of the turbulent kinetic energy (k) to infer the relevant velocity scale. We show that such turbulent viscosity formulations are not suitable …
Composite Index As A Way Of Measuring Economic Distress In Nebraska, Cornelius S. Okumu
Composite Index As A Way Of Measuring Economic Distress In Nebraska, Cornelius S. Okumu
Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses
The Nebraska state department of economic development, just like any other state’s department of economic development in the United States receives funding for economic development programs. These programs are mostly geared toward revitalizing economic situations of villages, cities or counties that are under economic distress. The purpose of this paper is to assess how the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (NEDED) currently measure distress in Nebraska Counties, and develop composite distress indexes that might improve the measure, interpretation and use of Economic distress index to help in their allocation of Economic development resources to Nebraska counties.

We present an overview of a new integral field spectroscopic survey called MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory), one of three core programs in the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) that began on 2014 July 1. MaNGA will investigate the internal kinematic structure and composition of gas and stars in an unprecedented sample of 10,000 nearby galaxies. We summarize essential characteristics of the instrument and survey design in the context of MaNGA's key science goals and present prototype observations to demonstrate MaNGA's scientific potential. MaNGA employs dithered observations with 17 fiber-bundle integral field units that vary in …

Professional Development And The Growth Of Professional Learning Communities In Education, Chelsie Hinrichs
Professional Development And The Growth Of Professional Learning Communities In Education, Chelsie Hinrichs
Counselor Education Capstones
Professional development will most certainly always be a part of education. Even though professional development standards and practices may change over the course of time, its importance and implications for students will not. It is part of the educator’s job to continually their teaching techniques and practices. One must stay up-to-date on the most current methods in education in order to assure student success. With that being said, professional development has evolved into more than just attending workshops and meetings. It has evolved into professional learning communities (PLC’s), which enable educator’s to reach out to their students in new way, …

Aerosols, Hurricanes, And Their Interactions : A Case Study Of Hurricane Sandy, Andrew Fontenot, Hesham El-Askary, W. Lau
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
While the effects of aerosols on precipitation have been studied, their effects on more extreme precipitation events like Tropical Cyclones have only been questioned relatively recently. Because of the rarity of the intersection of significant quantities of aerosols and forming/formed tropical cyclones, as well as the possible destruction caused, most experiments about their effects take place in computer models that may not fully simulate the effects of the aerosols. Limitations in satellite sensing make it difficult to track processes and material distributions in hurricanes from afar as well. Hurricane Sandy, a devastating hurricane that formed in October of 2012, may …

Unfolding Thailand: Tourism Promoted By 3d Motion Graphics, Nonthawan Pisessith
Theses
Unfolding Thailand is a project that aims to bring a new approach in introducing the country as well as promoting the tourism. My specific scope of this project is to create a visual representation of popular destinations from the northern, central, and southern areas through the use of 3D motion graphics. These three of the six regions in Thailand are chosen because they vary in geography, have a very distinctive characteristic and most importantly, they are the most popular vacation destinations for locals and tourists alike.

One of the most common concerns we hear from potential Degree Completion students is, “Do I really have what it takes to succeed academically?” Many students have been away from the classroom for years. Others are nervous about taking online courses, or about whether they will have access to extra help at their satellite campus.

Views By St Louis County Residents Regarding The Police And Public Responses To The Shooting Of Michael Brown In Ferguson, Missouri On August 9, 2014, Tammy R. Kochel
Reports
In their own words, residents living in high crime, disadvantaged neighborhoods of St. Louis County, MO revealed how they were personally impacted by the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson and the police and public response to it during the first few weeks following the event last August. Three quarters of residents reported being impacted in some way. The most common negative effects were emotional, as well as the daily inconvenience brought on by closed stores and schools and traffic issues. Residents’ opinions about police also suffered. Concerns about the police response relate to a perceived overreaction and specifically, use …

Looking Again At James Currie's Inventory: The Other Side Of The Burns Correspondence, Patrick G. Scott, Joseph C. Durant

This article, based on editorial work in progress for the forthcoming Letters Addressed to Robert Burns, 1779-1796, briefly describes the larger project and then explores one of the major project sources, James Currie's inventory of the letters in Burns's possession at the time of his death, to show the range of his correspondence and how some of the brief inventory letter-summaries can be expanded by research. The article is based on a videorecorded presentation for Project Symposium no. 3: "Textual Landmarks," for the AHRC-funded project Editing Robert Burns for the 21st Century, Center for Robert Burns Studies, University of …

Food Purchasing Habits Of Participants In The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap) Among Shelby County, Tennessee Residents, Michelle Ann Miller
Food Purchasing Habits Of Participants In The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Snap) Among Shelby County, Tennessee Residents, Michelle Ann Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a government entitlement program that provides monetary assistance for participants to consistently acquire adequate food. Many unanswered questions remain regarding nutrition quality of SNAP purchases. Eighty-four SNAP participants were surveyed at food pantries throughout Shelby County, TN to obtain a descriptive analysis of participant purchasing habits. The majority of households received $150 or less per month in benefits, which were spent most frequently at convenience stores (n=42) and in bakeries/delis (n=44). 77% (n=65) of participants reported experiencing times while utilizing SNAP benefits where there was not enough food to feed his/her family. Meat …
