The Environmental Sensitivity Of Hurricane Irene's (2011) Structural Evolution, Jason W. Godwin Dec 2014

The Environmental Sensitivity Of Hurricane Irene's (2011) Structural Evolution, Jason W. Godwin

Open Access Theses

Over the past 20 years, tropical cyclone (TC) track forecasts have improved significantly while intensity forecasts have improved little. Part of the reason for this lack of improvement in intensity forecasts is a lack of understanding behind the physical mechanisms that control the size and structure of a TC. Previous studies on TC structure have largely focused on wind shear, or have been conducted using idealized TC simulations. This study examines the influence of synoptic-scale vorticity interactions and moisture on the structural evolution of a real hurricane. Simulations were conducted using the Advanced Weather Research Weather Research and Forecasting Model …

Santa Muerte: A Transnational Spiritual Movement Of The Marginalized, Armando Rubi Iii Dec 2014

Santa Muerte: A Transnational Spiritual Movement Of The Marginalized, Armando Rubi Iii

Open Access Theses

The mass media have recently brought to public light the new religious movement of Santa Muerte, or “Holy Death”. The depictions of Santa Muerte in news coverage, television and film have also swayed public perception through highly exoticized representations of the belief system, particularly in relation to violence and criminality. Separating sensationalization in the media from the actual practices of Santa Muerte serves to demonstrate that many devotees are non-violent practitioners. By using an ethnographic study of botanícas and documenting Santa Muerte related objects available to practitioners, this study nuances the multilayered components of this emergent religion.

Occupy Wall Street, Mark Y. Herring

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

Perhaps someone can help me with this. Since the discovery of a library at the “Occupy Wall Street” site in New York, the library press has been nothing short of gaga. Like Neanderthals discovering fire, the library press has been all atwitter about the library, books, donations to same, and, of course, the destruction — OMG, no, please say it isn’t so! — of said library when the police moved in.

Race And Punishment: Demographic Disparities And Patterns In The Blue Earth County Court System, Aaron Guerdet, Alyssa Haugly, Kelsey Mischke

Public Sociology Publications and Projects

This study examines potential race and gender disparities in sentencing decisions in Blue Earth County, MN courts. Using qualitative field observations and a grounded theory approach, authors observed and analyzed court proceedings. In total, three researchers conducted seven weeks of observations; the final sample consisted of 95 observed court sessions, 50 of them being closed court cases. Results show little discrepancy in gender and charges and sentencing rates. Though there are racial discrepancies in charges that suggest discriminatory policing decisions, the data shows that minority members are being sentenced at a similar rate compared to white defendants. In all cases …
