The Liberatory Potential Of Caribbean Women, Vanessa Valdes Dec 2014

The Liberatory Potential Of Caribbean Women, Vanessa Valdes

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

Myriam Chancy’s latest study, From Sugar to Revolution: Women’s Visions of Haiti, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, is a stunning achievement in comparative analysis of Caribbean cultures. It is simply a master class for those of us who attempt to make sense of the complex histories of the region and the written works and visual arts that result. In this rich text, Chancy juxtaposes works by women of Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, highlighting the long-standing relationships of the nations of Hispaniola and the largest Antillean island.

Bridges Beyond The Kala Pani: Transgressing Boundaries In Mootoo And Espinet, Johanna Garvey Dec 2014

Bridges Beyond The Kala Pani: Transgressing Boundaries In Mootoo And Espinet, Johanna Garvey

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

“Bridges Beyond the Kala Pani: Transgressing Boundaries in Mootoo and Espinet”

Abstract: Until recently, the kala pani or “dark waters” navigated by Indian subjects indentured and shipped to locations in the Caribbean remained largely unexplored. In the past decade, the fiction of authors such as Ramabai Espinet and Shani Mootoo, as well as scholarship by Brinda Mehta, Shalini Puri, M. Jacqui Alexander, and others, has begun to excavate Indo-Caribbean experience as well as to chart paths from places such as Trinidad to locations in the North, especially Canada. In considering issues of citizenship and belonging, texts by Espinet and Mootoo …

“We Are Jamaicans. We Are Brothers”: History, Brotherhood, And Independence In Kerry Young’S Pao, Tzarina T. Prater Dec 2014

“We Are Jamaicans. We Are Brothers”: History, Brotherhood, And Independence In Kerry Young’S Pao, Tzarina T. Prater

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

Kerry Young’s first Novel, Pao, is written in the “voice” of a Chinese Jamaican, a voice that exhibits little if no syntactical or grammatical difference from those with whom he works and lives in the underworld of Chinatown in Kingston, Jamaica. Pao, our central protagonist, arrives to Jamaica in 1938, a time of tremendous social upheaval. The novel charts Pao’s growing political consciousness through his romantic relationships with: the “improper” black prostitute and madam, Gloria Campbell, who is the site of romantic love, and the “proper” Fay Wong, daughter of a grocery store chain owner and link to respectability. …

Towards “That Republic In Which Complexions Do Not Matter”: Derek Walcott’S Drums And Colours Fifty Years On, Harold N. Mcdermott Dec 2014

Towards “That Republic In Which Complexions Do Not Matter”: Derek Walcott’S Drums And Colours Fifty Years On, Harold N. Mcdermott

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

Derek Walcott’s three hour pageant, Drums and Colours, commissioned to celebrate the inauguration of the West Indian Federation was first performed at the West Indian Festival, April 25 – May 1, 1958. Some feel that the nationalist and didactic thrust of this early drama blunted it value as art. It is, however, the opinion of this paper that this play provides one of the earliest conceptual maps for Walcott’s orchestration of key thematic occupations such as the quarrel with history, racial and cultural syncretism and the evolution of a distinctive West Indian theatre style. Fifty years after the breakup of …

Creolization West One. Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners, Bill Schwarz Dec 2014

Creolization West One. Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners, Bill Schwarz

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

The Lonely Londoners still stands as the classic story about Caribbean migration to the UK in the twentieth century. The purpose of this article is to uncover the literary forms which underwrite its status as a 'classic.' Selvon's writing is representative of an early colonial modernism, developing a particular style of diasporic realism, in which the dialectic of reality/unreality stands as decisive. This partly derives from literary form, and partly from the collective experience of migrant time. Central to ths is mode of representation is the Creolization of the linguistic structure of the anglophone novel-form itself, evident not only in …

The Pleasures Of Excerpts: George Lamming, New World Quarterly, And The Novel, Kathleen Deguzman Dec 2014

The Pleasures Of Excerpts: George Lamming, New World Quarterly, And The Novel, Kathleen Deguzman

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

This essay examines an understudied moment in George Lamming’s career: his guest editorship of New World Quarterly’s Barbados independence issue in 1966. With a reputation for writing difficult, dense fiction, Lamming has faced criticism from both fellow authors and literary scholars for the incompatibility of esoteric literature with working-class Caribbean readers. But in the Barbados independence issue of New World Quarterly, Lamming includes excerpts from two of his novels, In the Castle of My Skin and Of Age and Innocence. I examine these excerpts, as well as the special Barbados issue more generally, alongside Lamming’s fiction to …

Deciphering Transcription And Methylation Specific To Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease, Crystal Elizabeth Humphries Dec 2014

Deciphering Transcription And Methylation Specific To Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease, Crystal Elizabeth Humphries

Open Access Dissertations

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia affecting approximately 13% of individuals 65 and older. Rare variants in the Amyloid precursor protein, Presenilin 1, or Presenilin 2 genes primarily cause Early-Onset Alzheimer disease and comprise 2% of AD cases. Conversely, Late-Onset Alzheimer disease (LOAD) is much more complex and accounts for greater than 90% of AD cases. Recent transcriptome studies have shed light on molecular functions altered in LOAD. Many of these studies have consistently observed alterations within several pathways: synaptic transmission, inflammation, energy metabolism, myelination, and signal transduction. While αβ plaques and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are …
