Why Are We Doing This? The Role Of Personal Relevance In Developing Biological Information Literacy Using Cyber Peer-Led Team Learning, Jeffrey D Radloff, C Maybee, Maribeth Slebodnik, Nancy Pelaez

IMPACT Symposium

Student-centered learning necessitates that students engage with an array of materials to develop their own understandings, often requiring students to find and critically engage with biological information. This project describes a course (BIOL 131; Biology II: Development, Structure and Function of Organisms) that utilizes cyber Peer-led Team Learning (cPLTL) as a student-centered approach to enhance students’ biological information literacy. Emphasizing the social aspects of learning, students work together in small groups led by a peer mentor using online meeting software. Scaffolded across the first half of the semester, students were given information literacy focused questions as part of a weekly …

Disease Interpretations And Response Among Hiv-Positive Mothers, Johanna Debora Imelda Jan 2014

Disease Interpretations And Response Among Hiv-Positive Mothers, Johanna Debora Imelda

Antropologi Indonesia

Despite the growing number of new cases of HIV and AIDS in Indonesia, the progress of prevention programs has been slow. Low prevelance is always stated as a reason for delaying HIV prevention programs and to justify slow progress in implementation. Prevention programs are moreover based on a high-risk group paradigm. They focus on female sex workers as responsible for the spread of HIV, leading to its stigmatization as a hooker's disease. This article describes how seropositive mothers interpret and respond to HIV and AIDS as women, in light of the fact that most of them have not experienced full-blown …

Rasionalisasi Sakit Dan Penyakit Dalam Konstelasi Budaya Minangkabau (Kajian Etnomedisin Di Agam Dan Tanah Datar), Yunarti -, Nurainas -, Yulkardi -, Fitria Ramona

Antropologi Indonesia

A medical system whether traditional or modern, is a long chain of processes of humanstrategy for adapting to their ecological bio-cultural environment. Naturally humans developtheir biological ability to sustain their kind and develop many adaptation strategies, creatingmedical systems, behavior, and belief sbased on culture as a natural response to the treat ofillness and disease, even though the result of certain behavior does not guarantee the healingof such illness and disease (Dunn in Foster-Anderson, 1986; p.41). under that circumstances,Minangkabau medical systems are seen as a result of a bio-eco-culturally adapting process.Local Etiology of the disease source is closely related to the …

Gunung Padang: Where Meanings And Archaeologies Coalesce, Sindhunata Hargyono Jan 2014

Gunung Padang: Where Meanings And Archaeologies Coalesce, Sindhunata Hargyono

Antropologi Indonesia

This paper looks at 21st C Gunung Padang as the site where archaeologies’ imaginations coalesce. Specifically, this paper looks at the way Gunung Padang is interpreted by different political communities, such as, international pseudoarchaeologists and indigenous people. I argue that pseudoarchaeologists engage with Gunung Padang to further their classic “rouge researchers” narrative. While geographically proximate self-identified indigenous people engage with the archaeological site to manufacture cultural continuity with the non-culture, yet, exceptional ancestors. This paper also takes Gunung Padang as a tool to problematize the literature that tries to draw boundary between pseudoarchaeology and (real) archaeology. Ultimately, I argue that …

Fortifying The Front Line: The Marcus Collaborative Coaching Project, Sally Fuhrmeister, Sonja Ziegler

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

As professionals in the area of child development, we share the common goal that every child is supported in obtaining his or her fullest developmental potential. This can be achieved by empowering our front-line caregivers and teachers with expert knowledge and skills via communication, internalization, and practice through collaborative learning experiences with other specialists in the field. Though each team member brings a specific level of knowledge and experience to collaboration, there are important processes that must occur to ensure all tools are consolidated into appropriate support of the utmost quality for each child. These include understanding the process of …

Risen Land, James Anthony Faris Jan 2014

Risen Land, James Anthony Faris

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The sculptures I create are inspired by derelict manufactured spaces found within Bulloch County. Each object is created in Tabby, a historic building material comprised of oyster shells, lime, sand and water, commonly known as ‘the first American concrete.’ Tabby was often used in the Coastal South, speaking to the resourceful tradition of using available aggregates. The sculptures embrace the tonal and textural qualities provided by this material to yield ghost-like representations of architectural components while also referencing commercial and historic methods of construction.

Serving as a monument to the diverse history of each site, every sculpture is fabricated based …

From ‘Sage On The Stage’ To ‘Guide On The Side’: A Good Start, Charles D. Morrison Jan 2014

From ‘Sage On The Stage’ To ‘Guide On The Side’: A Good Start, Charles D. Morrison

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

While the now-clichéd shift from ‘sage on the stage’ to ‘guide on the side’ that characterizes the changing role of teachers is a good start, it is just that – a start. In this paper, I argue for a detailed look at the concomitant shift in the role of students, as they leave the world of passive recipients and join the ranks of active participants in the teaching-learning nexus. The paper discusses the problematic conflation of the terms ‘information’ and ‘knowledge’ that surfaces in consideration of the shifting roles of teachers and students, and argues that, in addition to defining …

Collaborating With Academic Affairs To Cultivate Environments That Support Student Integrity, J. Matthew Garrett, Alex C. Lange Jan 2014

Collaborating With Academic Affairs To Cultivate Environments That Support Student Integrity, J. Matthew Garrett, Alex C. Lange

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

Integrity development has been recognized as a common outcome at many colleges and universities (Association of American Colleges & Universities, 2012; Chickering & Reisser, 1993; Dugan & Komives, 2007; Higher Education Research Institute, 1996). Thus, it is important to create academic and student affairs collaborations that promote the development of students’ integrity and values clarification. In this article, we briefly discuss existing and new integrity research that informs how practitioners and administrators can structure environments supportive of students’ value clarification and congruence with their actions on campus. We use student Honor Codes/Codes of Conduct as an example source of collaboration …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Cystatin responses in sugarcane plants under drought stress have not previously been reported. To test the hypothesis that sugar cane cystatin can function as an osmotic stress tolerance gene, transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) strains with the ability to express sugarcane cystatin were constructed. The osmotic stress tolerance of the transgenic yeasts was then evaluated, and it was found that the transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) had increased growth and increased osmotic stress tolerance. To gain a greater understanding of the responses of sugarcane cystatin to drought, 1 drought-susceptible and 3 drought-tolerant sugarcane cultivars …

Monitoring Brown Fat Metabolic Activity Using Microwave Radiometry: Antenna Design And Frequency Selection, Dario B. Rodrigues, Paul R. Stauffer, Paolo F. Maccarini

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

This paper describes the use of microwave radiometry for monitoring brown fat metabolism (mBAT). The radiometric frequency band and receive antenna were optimized for coupling to 2-6 ml BAT depots in the supraclavicular region. Radiometric signal variations induced by higher metabolic activity resulting from a cold stimulus were calculated with electromagnetic and thermal simulations in a segmented computational model of the human neck including BAT. A 2.5 cm dia. log spiral antenna was selected as optimum using a 500 MHz bandwidth and center frequency 2.75 GHz. Results suggest sufficient sensitivity to track subsurface temperature variations during long term mBAT monitoring …

(Wp 2014-01) Is Bitcoin The 'Paris Hilton' Of The Currency World? Or Are The Early Investors Onto Something That Will Make Them Rich? [Updated Version], Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Working Papers

The bitcoin phenomenon, and the technological innovation that made it possible, is interesting - but for investors large and small, the more pertinent question is whether they should buy the digital currency or avoid it. We analyze a bitcoin investment from the standpoint of an investor with a diversified portfolio using both in-sample and out-of-sample settings. Within the in-sample setting, bitcoin does not yield added value to investors with utility function consistent with the mean-variance setting. On the other hand, they do offer diversification benefits to investors with negative exponential and power utility functions. However, these benefits are not preserved …

The Subversion Of State – To State Investment Treaty Arbitration, Jarrod Wong

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

State-to-state arbitration provisions in bilateral investment treaties and other international investment agreements (collectively called BITs here) have been little used—and rightly so—given the introduction of investor-state arbitration provisions in the same BITs. In a handful of cases, however, some states have sought to resurrect state-to-state arbitration, either to contest issues already decided in separate investorstate arbitral proceedings, or else to stave off such proceedings. Most recently and controversially, in Ecuador v. U.S., Ecuador initiated arbitration against the United States under the U.S.-Ecuador BIT to (re)arbitrate an issue that had arguably been determined against Ecuador in a separate prior arbitration between …

Conclusion To Freedom And Criminal Responsibility In American Legal Thought, Thomas Green

Other Publications

The contours of the story told in Part III represent a quite tentative historicization of the free will problem as that problem manifested itself in the world of modern American criminal jurisprudence. Turn the kaleidoscope a few degrees and a different pattern appears, but one has to start somewhere, and if the point is to provoke others to join in, better if the first player has stopped at a point where the image can yield interesting and satisfying results by nearly any alternative adjustment. I would venture to say, however, that my pattern shares certain important characteristics with nearly any …

Effect Of Laser-Assisted Resonant Excitation On The Growth Of Gan Films, H. Rabiee Golgir, Y. Gao, Y. S. Zhou, L. S. Fan, Kamran Keramatnejad, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Gallium nitride (GaN) films were grown using laser-assisted metal organic chemical vapor deposition (LMOCVD). The vibrational mode (1084.63 cm-1) of ammonia (NH3) molecules was resonantly excited using a wavelength-tunable CO2 laser at a laser wavelength of 9.219 μm due to its high absorption cross-section. Through wavelength-matched resonant excitation of the NH3 molecules, highly c-axis oriented GaN films were successfully deposited on sapphire (α-Al2O3) substrates at low temperatures (250 to 600oC). The strong (0001) GaN peak in Xray diffraction spectra confirmed the good crystalline quality of GaN films. Additionally, the …
