Friction Coefficients For Dried Distillers Grains On Eight Structural Surfaces, G. C. Nyendu, S. Pflum, P. Schumacher, C. J. Bern, T. J. Brumm

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Static and dynamic coefficients of friction on structural surfaces play important roles in the power requirements and material selection for equipment used in handling and storing agricultural commodities. However, friction data on dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) is limited. Further, lack of a standardized method for determining friction coefficient on grain handling materials presents a challenge. This article describes studies carried out to determine the static coefficient of friction (•_s) and dynamic coefficient of friction (•_d) for corn DDGS at 10%, 8.2%, and 6.5% moisture content (all moistures are % wet basis) on eight structural surfaces: High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), …

The Highs And Lows Of Caregiving For Chronically Ill Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Elders, Anna M. Muraco, Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen

Sociology Faculty Works

This study examines informal caregivers’ and LGB care recipients’ “best” and “worst” experiences of care within their relationship. Communal relationship theory guides the research. The work uses qualitative interview data from a sample of 36 care pairs (n=72), divided between committed partners and friends, to understand the similarities and differences in the care norms employed in varied relationship contexts. Findings from the study show that relationship context influences the experiences that caregivers and care recipients identify as “best” and “worst,” but often focus on the relationship and needs met at bests, and conflict and fear of worsening health as worsts.

Human Capital And Savings In An Olg Economy With Migration Possibilities: A Theoretical Note, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy, Dickson A. Lim Jan 2014

Human Capital And Savings In An Olg Economy With Migration Possibilities: A Theoretical Note, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy, Dickson A. Lim

DLSU Business & Economics Review

In a theoretical study by Stark, Helmenstein, and Prskawetz (1998), the presence of migration possibilities may increase human capital formation. This note verifies the robustness of the said result by introducing savings as a choice variable in an overlapping generations model with migration possibilities. Results indicate that human capital formation will still increase provided that certain technical conditions are met.

When Law Reform Is Not Enough: A Case Study On Social Change And The Role That Lawyers And Legal Clinics Ought To Play, Jeff Carolin Jan 2014

When Law Reform Is Not Enough: A Case Study On Social Change And The Role That Lawyers And Legal Clinics Ought To Play, Jeff Carolin

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Based on his experience as a law student in the clinical legal education program at Parkdale Community Legal Services in 2010, the author draws on poverty law scholarship to better understand his frustrations with a law reform campaign he worked on related to refugee family reunification. The scholarship’s central critique of law reform campaigns is that they are excessively narrow: they focus on a particular law and construct the law itself as the social injustice. This leads to two subsidiary problems. First, law reform campaigns ignore the underlying socio-political context that produced the law, foregoing opportunities for broader societal transformation. …

Anger Effects On Driver Situation Awareness And Driving Performance, Myounghoon Jeon, Bruce N. Walker, Thomas M. Gable Jan 2014

Anger Effects On Driver Situation Awareness And Driving Performance, Myounghoon Jeon, Bruce N. Walker, Thomas M. Gable

Department of Psychology and Human Factors Publications

Research has suggested that emotional states have critical effects on various cognitive processes, which are important components of situation awareness (Endsley, 1995b). Evidence from driving studies has also emphasized the importance of driver situation awareness for performance and safety. However, to date, little research has investigated the relationship between emotional effects and driver situation awareness. In our experiment, 30 undergraduates drove in a simulator after induction of either anger or neutral affect. Results showed that an induced angry state can degrade driver situation awareness as well as driving performance as compared to a neutral state. However, the angry state did …

Kemiskinan Dan Migrasi: Analisis Data Sakerti 2000 Dan 2007, Aulia Nabila, Elda L. Pardede

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

This paper aims to analyze the effect of poverty on migration by using the IFLS 2000 and 2007 data. The results of binary and multinomial logistic regressions on all adults, adults in urban areas, and adults in rural areas show that the poor are less likely to migrate than the non-poor except for the case of urban to urban migration, where the poor are more likely to migrate than the non-poor. The results for other economic characteristics such as total value of assets and land ownership for farming consistently show that better economic conditions lower the probability to migrate.

Religion And The Politics Of Time: Holidays In France From Louis Xiv Through Napoleon: Book Review, Muriel Schmid Jan 2014

Religion And The Politics Of Time: Holidays In France From Louis Xiv Through Napoleon: Book Review, Muriel Schmid

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

As the full title indicates, Religion and the Politics of Time is organized chronologically and presents the evolution of the organization of time in France from the early seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century. The style of this historical inquiry is very much reminiscent of Michel Vovelle's or Bernard Plongeron's publications on eighteenth-century revolutionary France, both of which are similarly based on extensive archival research. One of the stated goals of the book is "to reexamine the republican calendar in a long-term framework'' (5). Looking at the history that immediately precedes and follows the creation of the republican calendar …

Global And Local Perspectives In Spanish And New World Performances Of Calderon's Four Parts Of The World, Beth K. Aracena

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

The first published collection of Pedro Calderon de la Barca's autos sacramentales(sacred dramas) dates from 1677, during Calderon's lifetime (1600-1681), and includes an explanation of the works penned by this great Spanish dramaturge. In his preface, recognizing that readers may be annoyed at similarities in the printed repertoire of more than seventy autos, Calderon justifies the collection: "The autos were performed but once [sic] a year, and this volume contains works which were produced at intervals over a period of more than twenty years. They were not written to be printed together and read one after another:" Calderon also …

Housing Changing Households: Regulatory Challenges For Micro-Units And Accessory Dwelling Units, John Infranca Jan 2014

Housing Changing Households: Regulatory Challenges For Micro-Units And Accessory Dwelling Units, John Infranca

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The existing stock of affordable rental housing falls significantly short of the need in many areas of the country. In addition, available housing frequently does not match the specific needs of prospective tenants, which have changed as household sizes shrink, more people are living alone, and people are living longer. This misalignment has been exacerbated by regulatory environments that have not kept pace with evolving housing demands. Likely as a result, cities throughout the country have seen an increase in illegal housing units – units that do not conform to zoning or building codes and may not provide safe living …

The Fair Labor Standards Act: A Tool For Those Who Represent Employees, Claimants, And Plaintiffs, Joseph A. Schremmer, Sean M. Mcgivern Jan 2014

The Fair Labor Standards Act: A Tool For Those Who Represent Employees, Claimants, And Plaintiffs, Joseph A. Schremmer, Sean M. Mcgivern

Faculty Scholarship

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938 is a comprehensive federal statute that regulates minimum wages, maximum hours, and child labor. This article is intended to provide background for the general practitioner in an effort to help advance the interests of Kansas Association for Justice clients and workers. The FLSA was created to hold disreputable employers to account for chiseling their workers. The tangle of rules and regulations that followed may have complicated the operation of a basically straightforward law. But as long as lawyers understand and can navigate these highly technical provisions, FDR’s grand vision for fair and …
