Ukiyo-e Prints Course | Exhibition Catalogs

"This book invites its readers to join RISD WS 2014 Japanese Prints class for an edifying expedition to Japan’s eight waterfalls portrayed by Katsushika Hokusai, an ukiyo-e preeminent artist, in his masterpiece print series “A Journey to the Waterfalls of Various Provinces.” In fact, this expedition is an academic endeavor undertaken by a collective of students who tried their hand at curating a museum exhibition as their art history course project. ..." -- Foreword, The Living Torrents: Hokusai's " Journey Around the Waterfalls of Various Provinces"

Stage-Dependent Plasticity Of The Anterior Neural Folds To Form Neural Crest, Maxellende Ezin Jan 2014

Stage-Dependent Plasticity Of The Anterior Neural Folds To Form Neural Crest, Maxellende Ezin

Biology Faculty Works

The anterior neural fold (ANF) is the only region of the neural tube that does not produce neural crest cells. Instead, ANF cells contribute to the olfactory and lens placodes, as well as to the forebrain and epidermis. Here, we test the ability of the ANF to form neural crest by performing heterotopic transplantation experiments in the chick embryo. We find that, at the neurula stage (HH stage 7), the chick ANF retains the ability to form migrating neural crest cells when transplanted caudally to rostral hindbrain levels. This ability is gradually lost, such that by HH9, this tissue appears …

Effects Of Sediment Depth On Algal Turf Height Are Mediated By Interactions With Fish Herbivory On A Fringing Reef, Sarah Joy Bittick Jan 2014

Effects Of Sediment Depth On Algal Turf Height Are Mediated By Interactions With Fish Herbivory On A Fringing Reef, Sarah Joy Bittick

Biology Faculty Works

Closely cropped algal turfs support key ecosystem functions on healthy coraldominated reefs, yet how this important reef component is affected by sedimentation, a key stressor on reefs worldwide, is relatively unknown. We used a 2-factor caging experiment to evaluate the effects of varying sediment depth and presence of herbivorous fish on algal turf height on a fringing reef in Mo'orea, French Polynesia. Without herbivory, 2 mm of sediment reduced turf growth by ∼50% compared to sediment removal treatments; in contrast, growth with 4 mm of sediment was low or negligible regardless of herbivory treatment. Negative effects of sediment were linked …

Spatio-Temporal Prediction Of Root Zone Soil Moisture Using Multivariate Relevance Vector Machines, B. Zaman, Mac Mckee Jan 2014

Spatio-Temporal Prediction Of Root Zone Soil Moisture Using Multivariate Relevance Vector Machines, B. Zaman, Mac Mckee

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

oot zone soil moisture at one and two meter depths are forecasted four days into the future. In this article, we propose a new multivariate output prediction approach to root zone soil moisture assessment using learning machine models. These models are known for their robustness, efficiency, and sparseness; they provide a statistically sound approach to solving the inverse problem and thus to building statistical models. The multivariate relevance vector machine (MVRVM) is used to build a model that forecasts soil moisture states based upon current soil moisture and soil temperature conditions. The methodology combines the data at different depths from …

Marriage Outlaws: Regulating Polygamy In America, Casey E. Faucon Jan 2014

Marriage Outlaws: Regulating Polygamy In America, Casey E. Faucon

Articles

Polygamist families in America live as outlaws on the margins of society While the insular groups living in and around Utah are recognized by mainstream society Muslim polygamists including African"American polygamists living primarily along the East Coast are much less familiar Despite the positive social justifications that support polygamous marriage recognition the practice remains taboo in the eyes of the law Second and third polygamous wives are left without any legal recognition or protection Some legal scholars argue that states should recognize and regulate polygamous marriage specifically by borrowing from business entity models to draft default rules that strive for …

Shifting The Fat-Tailed Distribution Of Blockbuster Punitive Damages Awards, W. Kip Viscusi, Benjamin J. Mcmichael

Articles

The distribution of blockbuster punitive damages awards has fat tails similar to the distributions of losses from natural disasters Extremely large awards occur more often and are more difficult to predict than if blockbuster awards were distributed normally The size and predictability of awards are important factors in the US Supreme Court's decisions on punitive damages This article examines the effect of the Court's decision in iState Farm v Campbelli on blockbuster punitive damages awards iState Farmi shifts the fat tail of the distribution of blockbuster awards down or "thins" the tail which is consistent with a restraining effect on …

Friction Coefficients For Dried Distillers Grains On Eight Structural Surfaces, G. C. Nyendu, S. Pflum, P. Schumacher, C. J. Bern, T. J. Brumm Jan 2014

Friction Coefficients For Dried Distillers Grains On Eight Structural Surfaces, G. C. Nyendu, S. Pflum, P. Schumacher, C. J. Bern, T. J. Brumm

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Static and dynamic coefficients of friction on structural surfaces play important roles in the power requirements and material selection for equipment used in handling and storing agricultural commodities. However, friction data on dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) is limited. Further, lack of a standardized method for determining friction coefficient on grain handling materials presents a challenge. This article describes studies carried out to determine the static coefficient of friction (•_s) and dynamic coefficient of friction (•_d) for corn DDGS at 10%, 8.2%, and 6.5% moisture content (all moistures are % wet basis) on eight structural surfaces: High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), …

The Highs And Lows Of Caregiving For Chronically Ill Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Elders, Anna M. Muraco, Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen Jan 2014

The Highs And Lows Of Caregiving For Chronically Ill Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Elders, Anna M. Muraco, Karen I. Fredriksen-Goldsen

Sociology Faculty Works

This study examines informal caregivers’ and LGB care recipients’ “best” and “worst” experiences of care within their relationship. Communal relationship theory guides the research. The work uses qualitative interview data from a sample of 36 care pairs (n=72), divided between committed partners and friends, to understand the similarities and differences in the care norms employed in varied relationship contexts. Findings from the study show that relationship context influences the experiences that caregivers and care recipients identify as “best” and “worst,” but often focus on the relationship and needs met at bests, and conflict and fear of worsening health as worsts.
