An Analysis Of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms In United States Air Force Drone Operators, Wayne Chappelle, Tanya Goodman, Laura Reardon, William Thompson

Remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), commonly referred to as “drones,” have emerged over the past decade as an innovative warfighting tool. Given there is a paucity of empirical research assessing drone operators, the purpose of this study was to assess for the prevalence of PTSD symptoms among this cohort. Of the 1084 United States Air Force (USAF) drone operators that participated, a total of 4.3% endorsed a pattern of symptoms of moderate to extreme level of severity meeting criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-4th edition. The remarkable growth of informal migrant entrepreneurship in South Africa since 1990 would have been much lauded had it not been for the striking detail that the actors in question are seen as “foreigners” or “outsiders”. As such, they are uniformly viewed as undesirable and disadvantaging poor South African citizens. Elections And Asset Pricing: The Politically Sensitive Equity Of Us Military Contractors, Matthew Mark Ross

I quantify the relationship between political uncertainty and equity volatility in the months around US elections from 1989-2012. The Economic Policy Uncertainty Index and Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) data are employed to measure political uncertainty faced by military contractors, capitalizing on the unique monopsony-oligopoly business environment of these firms. I employ a GARCH (1,1) model with cross-sectionally correlated moments to produce daily firm-election volatility measures. Volatility increases 11% for local, 27% for midterm, and 43% for presidential elections. These measures demonstrate that all election categories: local, federal, presidential, and midterm exhibit differential effects on equity volatility. My results …

• Effective conceptual approaches must balance risk and resilience from a developmental perspective.

This essay attends to the sticky web of indigenous terminology concerning divination and other so-called “mundane” or “worldly” arts, focusing primarily upon Buddhist canonical texts preserved in Pāli, augmented by references to commentarial and exegetical literature. It asks: How have some Buddhists, as evinced in this canonical and exegetical literature, understood the broader category of “worldly arts,” which includes techniques we call divinatory? Are Buddhists discouraged from engaging with such practices, as has been commonly asserted? If so, then for whom, specifically, are such words of discouragement primarily meant? Noncompressible truncal hemorrhage and brain injury currently account for most early mortality of warfighters on the battlefield. There is no effective treatment for noncompressible truncal hemorrhage, other than rapid evacuation to a surgical facility. The availability of an effective field treatment for noncompressible truncal hemorrhage could increase the number of warfighters salvaged from this frequently-lethal scenario. Our intent was to develop a porcine model of noncompressible truncal hemorrhage with a ,50% one-hour mortality so that we could develop new treatments for this difficult problem. This project began with the intention of understanding the modern significance of medieval walled cities in France; some were torn down, some remain in pieces, and some were perfectly restored. By researching the histories of three cases studies, Carcassonne, Aigues-Mortes, and La Rochelle, as well as their current architectural states and tourist statistics, I have come to the conclusion that walled cities are preserved by the French as heritage sites in order to promote their cultural memory. The Book of Mormon claims to be an ancient record containing a summary of a now-disappeared civilization that once lived in the American continent but originated in the Middle East. DNA studies focusing on the ancient migration of world populations support a North-East Asian origin of modern Native American populations arriving through the now-submerged land bridge that once connected Siberia to Alaska during the last Ice Age, approximately 15,000 years ago. This thesis examines the relationship between print culture and American imperial endeavors in the Philippines. Specifically, it investigates articles in daily newspapers – the saliency of the American newspaper created a way for the public to encounter the Filipino native through representations formed by colonial actors and observers. The thesis’ individual chapters explore three distinct contexts in which discourses of an emerging imperial-racial framework were translated into the narratives of reportage. The degree to which the medium of the newspaper can replicate ideas, sounds and images created a shared experience and produced widespread stereotypes. A spectrometer operating from 110 to 170 GHz was constructed. The instrument design for this spectrometer was adapted from the design of a spectrometer at the University of Virginia that operates between 260 and 295 GHz. The newly-built spectrometer here uses an arbitrary waveform generator to produce a chirped pulse which is multiplied by a factor of 12 via an amplifier multiplier chain (AMC) to reach 110-170 GHz.A local oscillator, also produced by the AWG, is multiplied by the same factor of 12 and serves to downconvert the molecular emission, allowing for the collection of the free induction decay (FID) …

This thesis applies Julia Kristeva's theory of abjection to historical and fictional terrorists in post-9/11 American literature and television. The abject, according to her, is the horror one feels when confronted by anything that threatens the boundaries between self and other. The thesis explores the environmental and psychological conflicts and “othering” these individuals face before turning to terrorism, as well as why terrorism simultaneously fascinates and repulses the general public. As the 450th commemoration of the establishment of St. Augustine, Florida approaches, the theme park located on the site of the original Spanish encampment prepares for the celebration. The Ponce de Leon Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park attempts to present local historical events in an entertaining manner. Historically, the park has emphasized a false connection with Juan Ponce de Leon and the Fountain of Youth myth, primarily as a method of attracting more paying visitors.
