We Are the Asteroid is a collection of personal essays concerned with the power of erasure and manipulation of chronology that comes with writing. It both acknowledges and participates in the fact that nonfiction writers become unstuck in time, whether they want to or not, traveling between ages, rearranging the order of events into the stories they tell. The collection centers on a few traumatic events in the narrator's life, and it explores the ways in which she deals with those events through her writing. The writer utilizes various structural techniques, such as the segmented form, to play with the …

This thesis explores technical communication and seeks to establish that females outnumber males in the field while also holder more high-level positions. It further seeks to show why a field does not benefit from having one sex outnumber the other. The benefits of having an equal number of females and males contributing to the growth and expansion of the field are discussed. With every passing day, the demand for devices that have higher operating speeds increases. Currently, silicon's transistor size is limited and it has become difficult to obtain similar performance as compared to previous transistors. The silicon transistor design has changed from a planar geometry to an FINFET design, which allows dimensions to be scaled further while achieving similar performance. Even with this change in geometry, silicon will reach its scalable limit. With such a high demand for faster operational devices, the limitation of silicon will only be able to support the next generation transistors, and then a new type of …

Fake file systems are used in the field of cyber deception to bait intruders and fool forensic investigators. File system researchers also frequently generate their own synthetic document repositories, due to data privacy and copyright concerns associated with experimenting on real-world corpora. For both these fields, realism is critical. Unfortunately, after creating a set of files and folders, there are no current testing standards that can be applied to validate their authenticity, or conversely, reliably automate their detection. This article addresses the cultural and historical significance of the modern interpretation of extended range guitars while also discussing specifications of the instruments and the context of a mix. The extended range guitar refers to the added strings on a traditional six string guitar by adding a seventh, eight, and even ninth string to the electric guitar. First, this article explores how artists such as Steve Vai, Korn, Meshuggah, and Animals As Leaders have impacted and shaped the commercial creation, success, and cultural effects on the musical community with these extended range guitars, specifically within heavy metal. Place-Names In Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Ethnohistory 61, No. 2 (Spring 2014), Pp. 329-355., Barbara E. Mundy

The place-names that residents of the Mexica capital of Tenochtitlan (today Mexico City) gave to their city were both descriptive of topography and commemorative of history. Largely efaced from the Spanish historical register, Mexico City’s Nahuatl place-names were rescued from historical oblivion by José Antonio Alzate in the eighteenth century and again by Alfonso Caso in the twentieth. However, efacement is not equal to extinction, and this article argues for the continued use, even creation, of Nahuatl place-names into the eighteenth century. It suggests that the scholar’s desire to use place-names as an index to a pre-Hispanic past has obscured …

After nearly forty years of perpetual bloody conflict in Afghanistan, the Afghan Peace Volunteers (APV) —a small cohort of multi-ethnic Afghans— have concluded that nonviolence is not merely effective, it is essential for the long-term stability of their nation. Established in 2008 as Our Journey to Smile, the APV is a publicly identifiable organization promoting peaceful change in Afghanistan. Its members have now spent five years living out an experiment in peacemaking.

Modernization theory offers possible explanations for family changes related to advances in science and technology, and socio-economic development in industrial societies. Modernization impacts family structure, relationship, values and beliefs. Families become nuclear while people become mobile and the society becomes urban. Economic development provides employment opportunities outside the birthplace. Away from kinship network, a nuclear family is less influenced and controlled by elder members in the extended family in fulfilling its traditional roles and obligations (Parsons, 1943). The changes occur in all societies although they may vary in pace across societies (Goode, 1982). Modernization theory is criticized for valuing Western …

In this paper, I will argue that new developments in both the jus ad bellum law of the use of force, and the jus in bello law of armed conflict, have moved international law quite close to the position of contingent pacifism. The UN Charter was meant to eliminate recourse of war as we had known it.' And this continues to be the way the Charter is viewed today as a source of jus ad bellum law. A Mobile Self-Leveling Landing Platform For Small-Scale Uavs, Stephen Austin Conyers

This thesis presents a semi-autonomous mobile self-leveling landing platform designed to launch, recover and re-launch VTOL UAVs without the need for human intervention. The landing platform is rugged, lightweight and inexpensive, making it ideal for civilian applications that require a base station from which a rotorcraft UAV can be launched and recovered on terrain that is normally unsuitable for UAV operations. This landing platform is capable of self-leveling on rough terrain and inclined slopes, and can autonomously operate in remote locations for extended periods of time using large onboard lithium batteries and wireless communication.
