Stages Of Belief: The Nature Of Audience Response In Medieval And Early Modern Drama, Rebecca Cepek
Stages Of Belief: The Nature Of Audience Response In Medieval And Early Modern Drama, Rebecca Cepek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Medieval theatrical audiences expected that dramatic performances would have some element of truth: they believed that what they saw performed was in some sense factual, and this belief was due in large part to their participation in the dramatic spectacle. By the end of the sixteenth century, however, audiences easily differentiated between reality and the fictional world of the stage. What became blurred was the difference between the fact of the performers' lives and the fictional roles they embodied on stage. I make clear the connections between these responses through an analysis of a variety of texts, including "The Pinners …

Writing The Next Galileo, A Children's Musical, Joseph Domencic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis details my process in writing the book, music and lyrics to a one-act children's musical entitled The Next Galileo; it also includes an analysis of key aspects of the work. It begins with background on the project's genesis, followed by the early stages of the creative process, including chapters on the story's themes and structure. It continues by analyzing important musical elements of the piece as well as giving specifics about the compositional process. After describing the benefits of the music technologies and digital media utilized, it concludes with information about ongoing plans for the work, including its …
Mediated Histories: Representations Of Nineteenth-Century American Life At Greenfield Village And Crossroads Village, Jaclyn Millichamp
Mediated Histories: Representations Of Nineteenth-Century American Life At Greenfield Village And Crossroads Village, Jaclyn Millichamp
Wayne State University Theses
Living history museums are a prevalent form of history museum in which periods in history are portrayed through the use of artifacts and structures from the era, as well through the use of interpreters, which demonstrate processes from the past or discuss events with visitors. These sites have been scrutinized in the last few decades due to their constructed nature that often downplays negative aspects of the past. Since history is multi-faceted, it is impossible to present a clear recreation of history, and therefore, the creators of these sites have considerable leeway in how they choose to depict aspects of …

Assessment of Water Quality and Soil Sequestration to Ensure Environmental Quality at Georgia Southern University Campus
Dr. Arpita Saha (PI), Dr. Subhrajit Saha (Co-PI), and Matthew Pfister (Co-PI)
The proposed project has two parts, first part involves analysis of campus surface water quality and the second part involves measurement of campus soil carbon storage. The storm water runoff from off-campus and on-campus sources has the potential to pollute the campus water bodies and the findings of our study will recommend remedial strategies, which may help authorities to take necessary actions. The campus soil carbon distribution was inventoried and the factors …

The Effect Of Global English On Culture And Identity In The Uae: A Double-Edged Sword, Sarah Hopkyns
The Effect Of Global English On Culture And Identity In The Uae: A Double-Edged Sword, Sarah Hopkyns
All Works
The United Arab Emirates' complex history, its current demographics, its youthfulness as a country, and the fact that it is a region undergoing fast-paced change make the issue of cultural identity particularly relevant and urgent in this part of the world. This is especially true given the rapid spread of English in the sphere of education and everyday life in recent years. This paper discusses the above issues before analyzing the attitudes and perceptions of female Emirati university students and female Emirati primary school teachers with regard to global English and its effects on local culture and identity. After analysis …

A Pre-History Of Performing Rights In Anglo-American Copyright Law, Derek Miller
A Pre-History Of Performing Rights In Anglo-American Copyright Law, Derek Miller
Studio for Law and Culture
Statutes creating performing rights--the subset of copyright that secures the right to perform a work – first appeared in the United Kingdom in 1833, and in the United States in 1856. As I explore in the larger project of which this paper forms a part, during the decades that followed these laws’ passage, jurists and theater-makers defined performance as a marketable commodity, what I call the performance-commodity. They did so by negotiating between performance’s aesthetic value and its economic value. This commodity-centered approach was absent from most copyright lawsuits about performance before 1833 and 1856 because jurists and litigants did …

Advertising Higher Education In Romania, Anca C. Micu, Madalina Moraru
Advertising Higher Education In Romania, Anca C. Micu, Madalina Moraru
WCBT Faculty Publications
Romania, a former communist country in Eastern Europe, saw the iron curtain lifted in 1989, and started at that time the transition to a free market economy. The past couple of decades encompass extraordinary changes in the economic structure and environment, with state monopolies being dissolved and private companies entering the market and competing in western manner. The Romanian conversion from central planning to a market-oriented economy provides a fascinating laboratory for research in economic theory and practice (Hefner and Woodward 1999). With the advent of a free market economy and a competitive environment, advertising exited its dormant communist stage …
