The Cephalonian Method has garnered much interest for its possibilities for engaging students in what could be an otherwise one-sided orientation program. This workshop will help attendees determine how and when to incorporate the Cephalonian Method into their sessions, how to discuss the technique with colleagues, and, most importantly, develop a set of Cephalonian Method questions that can be used in orientation and instruction sessions at their home libraries.

The following work is a feature length screenplay about Anna Morris, an 18-year-old girl who finds herself faced with a moral dilemma when her estranged father, Robert, contacts her on her 18th birthday. When she learns about Robert’s past involvement in an online child pornography ring Anna must decide if she can forgive him, or -- more importantly -- if he is worthy of forgiveness. However, as the story unfolds we find that it is not just Anna who needs to forgive. This story approaches issues of repentance, growth, and the journey into adulthood as Anna takes on each new …

This project discusses the ways in which Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 functions as an indictment of media culture. While many analyses of the novel focus on the text’s sweeping themes of literary censorship, this study instead centers on Bradbury’s depiction of media—particularly television—culture and the ways in which Bradbury feared it could be harmful. Although Bradbury wrote about a future society a century beyond his own, his novel serves as a remarkable reflection of his contemporaneous culture’s media consumption and gendered divisions; this thesis discusses Bradbury’s novel alongside such forces, considering the effects such influences may have had on …

Women at DePauw University were propelled into positions of power on campus with the outbreak of World War I and America’s eventual entrance into the conflict. As male enlistment numbers rose, female students were forced to fill vacant jobs in organizations and clubs, as well as in the workforce. Working as educated people, the women at DePauw adjusted to the conflicting messages of the university and the government and developed their own understanding of what it meant to be a woman in World War I. In 2007 green meetings were ranked as the third most anticipated trend by Event Solutions magazine’s survey of 1,350 event professionals, however by 2011 it was an emerging trend (Goldblatt, 2012). Today, meeting and event planners are increasingly including clauses in their contracts with venues pertaining to green practices, and are willing to look elsewhere if a venue does not agree to partake in the green initiatives. For venues the failure to “go green” can mean a substantial loss of revenue. Ashura (also spelled Ashoura) takes place on the tenth day of Muharram when Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husayn that took place in 61 AH/ 680 AD. It is a socio-religious phenomenon that combines ritualistic and theatrical behavior. What I will attempt in this essay is to bring the critique to Schoenberg's artistic legacy first on the grounds of the philosophical debate that was going on in those years in the German-speaking world, more specifically between Idealism and Materialism. The second step will be that of bringing the understanding of Schoenberg methods on a cognitive level; and in doing so, I will establish theoretical ties between those philosophical systems and cognitive systems; namely the Cognitivist and the Connectionist approaches. Stanley Kubrick's oeuvre is characterized throughout by a distinct and unique interest in violence, sexuality, the uncomfortable, the eerie, the unknown, the beyond, and the grotesque. His aesthetic and conceptual approach achieves a special quality of calling attention to the liminal - those unspoken, unseen, uncertain, ungrounded, fleeting, and perhaps ineffable, moments and spaces in the visual and narrative presentation that occur between scenes, between characters, between images, and between the viewer and the film itself. In doing so Kubrick destabilizes the viewing experience and suspends the viewer in moments of uncertainty, discomfort, and ambiguity, achieving this effect even in …

Using Coco Fusco's notion of the Reconquista to read ¿Quién puede borrar las huellas? of 2003 and Reconocimiento de un cuerpo of 2008, this paper investigates performance artist Regina José Galindo's conceptual approaches of action and inaction. Grappling with very specific histories of violence and repression in attempts to deal with the unresolved, Regina José Galindo's performances here concern themselves with permanence and impermance, confronting and reactivating the bodies of her viewers by restaging collective memory and trauma. Transnational Mobilities And The Making Of Creative Cities, Lily Kong

This review essay on the literature on creative cities pays particular attention to the ways in which transnational mobilities contribute significantly to the making of such cities. The paper reviews critically both the literature and phenomena of creative cities and their transnational flows by framing the discussion around the mobility of ideas (creative economy/creative city discourse), the mobility of people (the migration of the creative class), the mobility of technology (the travel of the creative cluster and architectural iconism phenomena), the mobility of finances (capital and investment flows), and the mobility of images (transnational artistic collaborations and products).

In the 1920s three large Möller pipe organs were installed within a three-block radius in three historic churches in Natchez, Mississippi, a small, eclectic town on the Mississippi River. What was the catalyst that resulted in a seemingly extravagant use ofresources? Through information available in church archives, newspapers, books, journals, and documentsfrom organ companies, this study traces the historyof the organs and suggests possible reason for their original installation. The factors influencing thepurchases include the geography of Natchez, the location fo the churches, savvy salesmen, and a healthy competition among the church congregations. The National Reading Panel (NICHD, 2000) found that too many children struggle with learning to read. Through a Congressional mandate, the panel identified key skills and methods that were central to reading achievement in the grades kindergarten through third grade. According to the United States Department of Education (USDE) Summary of Discretionary Funds (2008b), over $6 billion were allocated to the schools to implement the research based strategies from 2002 to 2008. States throughout the country showed gains from the states’ first year of implementation to 2008 in grades 1-3 in comprehension assessments. Rapid readmission (RR) of psychiatric patients within 30 days of discharge places a costly burden on state psychiatric facilities and may be an indicator of suboptimal service provision. Several studies have previously considered RR to inpatient facilities, but there is a lack of information available about the variables associated with RR of psychiatric patients to state-operated inpatient facilities in Nevada. This study attempts to identify factors associated with RR at a southern Nevada state psychiatric hospital. Participants included 7,177 patients admitted between May 1, 2012 and April 30, 2014. Quality program evaluation investigates both the process and the outcomes of an intervention in order to accurately determine its effectiveness and impact. In the present study, the effectiveness of CHOICES, a brief, applied-theatre intervention that addresses cyberbullying and suicide was evaluated. The fidelity of implementation of the intervention was assessed to determine whether the delivery of CHOICES was consistent with the original goals of the program, as well as consistent across multiple deliveries. Investigation of the fidelity of implementation revealed that CHOICES was not implemented with high levels of fidelity. The study also determined whether exposure to CHOICES led to …

Twitter, one of the most popular social media platforms, has been studied from different angles. One of the important sources of information in Twitter is users’ biographies, which are short self-introductions written by users in free form. Biographies often describe users’ background and interests. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has not been much work trying to extract information from Twitter biographies. During the late 1950's the French film industry's hard-won financial stability during the Occupation and liberation years had all but disappeared. Combined with the dwindling, unpredictable nature of French audiences, the multi-star, literary adaptation dramas French studios produced were no longer reliable. In response to these dilemmas a transformation took place in French cinema. Known as the nouvelle vague (or French New Wave), the movement was largely, but not completely, a reaction to France's declining film industry.
