Provorov Fights Pride Night: Hockey, Homophobia, And Reactionary Athlete Activism, Matthew R. Meier Oct 2026

Provorov Fights Pride Night: Hockey, Homophobia, And Reactionary Athlete Activism, Matthew R. Meier

Communication & Theatre Faculty Publications

The 2022–2023 NHL season witnessed a spate of reactionary protests to team-sponsored Pride Nights by players set off by Philadelphia Flyers defensemen Ivan Provorov. In this essay, I consider the reactionary side of athlete activism through an analysis of these protests. Drawing on a critical rhetorical perspective, I critique the discourse of players, coaches, teams, and the league to outline the discursive features of athlete activism that advocates for the hegemonic status quo. I argue that these reactionary protests feature a refusal to engage in public discourse, a reliance on individual beliefs and personal choices, and tacit institutional approval from …

Multi-Surface Height Model For Stage Tracking And Automated Or Remote-Controlled Follow Spot Systems: Correct Target Height On Platforms, Ramps, Stairs And Moving Scenery, Paul Hermann, Michel Honold Oct 2026

Multi-Surface Height Model For Stage Tracking And Automated Or Remote-Controlled Follow Spot Systems: Correct Target Height On Platforms, Ramps, Stairs And Moving Scenery, Paul Hermann, Michel Honold

Defensive Publications Series

A multi-surface height model lets stage tracking and automated or remote-controlled follow spot systems place targets at the correct height on platforms, risers, ramps, stairs and moving scenery, instead of on a single flat floor plane. For a camera-based tracking system that provides position data, for example to a followspot system, the stage is described in stage coordinates by several surfaces (flat platforms, inclined ramps, stairs, height grids and imported meshes), each with a footprint, an elevation function and an identity. Image points such as mouse clicks and detection or zone foot points are corrected for lens distortion, cast as …

Beethoven’S Piccolo Apprenticeship: Eighteen Years Of Experimentation Before The Fifth Symphony, Rikki A. Wolpowitz Oct 2026

Beethoven’S Piccolo Apprenticeship: Eighteen Years Of Experimentation Before The Fifth Symphony, Rikki A. Wolpowitz

The Beethoven Journal

Beethoven is routinely credited as the "father of the orchestral piccolo," a claim resting primarily on his deployment of the instrument in the Fifth Symphony (1808). Yet this paternity metaphor obscures a crucial fact: Beethoven composed for the piccolo for nearly eighteen years before that symphonic premiere, producing works for court entertainment, public dances, and military bands that systematically explored the instrument’s capabilities. This article examines Beethoven’s complete piccolo output—nineteen works comprising thirty-two individual pieces—through a three-function analytical framework: the piccolo as range-extender, as vehicle for programmatic effect, and as independent voice. Beginning with the Musik zu einem Ritterballett (1790) …

The Small Reveal: The Identity Of Beethoven’S Brutus Bust, Scott Messing Oct 2026

The Small Reveal: The Identity Of Beethoven’S Brutus Bust, Scott Messing

The Beethoven Journal

Currently displayed in the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn is a bust labeled “Luc. Brutus,” referring to Lucius Junius Brutus, the Roman republic’s first consul. Beethoven’s purported ownership of this porcelain figure is not beyond question, following its first mention by Anton Schindler in the third edition (1860) of his Beethoven biography. Its prior history, however, is unknown. Even so, scholars have invoked it, owing to this ancient official’s extreme means to preserve the republic: he condemned his two sons to death for conspiring to overthrow the regime. Writers have linked this remarkable act of rescuing the state from the threat of …

Instalasi Sebagai Ruang Traumatis: Estetika Partisipatoris Dan Pengalaman Fenomenologis Dalam Karya Jompet Kuswidananto, Muhammad Majid Amanulloh Kusmadi, A. Syaifuddin Rohman

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

This study examines Jompet Kuswidananto’s installation artworks as spaces that represent traumatic memory through bodily engagement and audience participation. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach informed by Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and Claire Bishop’s perspective on participatory aesthetics. Data were collected through interviews with the artist and participants and through document analysis. The analysis focuses on two works, On Paradise #2 and Subterranean Thunder #1, selected for their relevance to traumatic memory, aesthetic experience, and audience participation. The findings show that both works construct experiences through relationships among objects, space, sound, light, and the audience’s body. Merleau-Ponty’s perspective demonstrates …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Executive summary

The research enterprise in the United States, established after the second world war, is experiencing massive disruption. US colleges and universities are grappling with federal and state disinvestment and intervention at a time when AI and other technologies are reshaping how research is conducted and its findings are communicated. As a result, researchers at US higher education institutions are operating in an unstable environment. Against this backdrop, the findings from our survey of 4,003 researchers, fielded in late 2025, demonstrate that they remain committed to carrying out essential work and that they are doing so in innovative ways—through …

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan

Open educational resources (OER) can provide additional learning materials for distance education students. However, limited research has examined academics’ experiences of using OER in distance teacher education study guides. This study examined academics’ perceptions and experiences of integrating OER into the study guides of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme at a university offering open and distance education in Sri Lanka. The study used a survey design with 30 purposively selected academics involved in developing courses for the programme. Data were collected through a questionnaire containing 25 items rated on a five-point scale and three open-ended questions. The responses were …

Convergence As Capability Toward Realizing The 2026 National Defense Strategy, James Giordano Oct 2026

Convergence As Capability Toward Realizing The 2026 National Defense Strategy, James Giordano

Strategic Insights

This commentary argues that revitalizing the U.S. defense industrial base requires more than expanding conventional production capacity. It calls for a broader, distributed national security industrial ecosystem that integrates critical technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum science, advanced materials, big-data analytics, and autonomous systems. Dr. Giordano recommends mission-oriented convergence programs, greater participation by nontraditional firms and universities, modular and interoperable acquisition, distributed manufacturing hubs, deeper supply-chain visibility, and investment in interdisciplinary talent. The ability to integrate emerging technologies into scalable, adaptable military capabilities should be treated as a core source of U.S. strategic advantage and deterrence.

Objective And Formal Introversion In Medieval Khurasan Ceramics: A Visual-Semiotic Study Of Selected Bamiyan Vessels, Ammar Abdl-Kadhim Mahdi

Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts

This study examines objective and formal introversion as an analytical framework for understanding the visual organization of 12th–13th-century CE (6th–7th centuries AH) glazed ceramics from Bamiyan within the broader cultural context of medieval Khurasan. While previous scholarship has extensively addressed the typological, technical, and decorative characteristics of Khurasanian ceramics, comparatively less attention has been given to the structural principles governing their internal visual organization. Using an art-historical and visual-semiotic approach, the study analyzes five purposively selected vessels from a documented corpus of 15 objects. The analysis examines morphological characteristics, compositional structure, center–periphery relationships, directional movement, boundaries, figuration, and negative space. …
