This study of geometry, gender, and skepticism in John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi argues that the play leaves us in a hall of mirrors, a horror show of optical tricks, delusion, narcissism, and perspectivism from which there seems to be no escape, no masterpiece of God’s creation upholding reality beyond sensory images. In the absence of a transcendental referent, the Duchess’ willful and fearful journey «into the wilderness» – the life she leads as a result of her furtive marriage to her steward Antonio – becomes an alternative to both the public sphere mapped by divine patterns of order …

Stanley Kubrick's oeuvre is characterized throughout by a distinct and unique interest in violence, sexuality, the uncomfortable, the eerie, the unknown, the beyond, and the grotesque. His aesthetic and conceptual approach achieves a special quality of calling attention to the liminal - those unspoken, unseen, uncertain, ungrounded, fleeting, and perhaps ineffable, moments and spaces in the visual and narrative presentation that occur between scenes, between characters, between images, and between the viewer and the film itself. In doing so Kubrick destabilizes the viewing experience and suspends the viewer in moments of uncertainty, discomfort, and ambiguity, achieving this effect even in …

Emotional numbing, a symptom of PTSD, has been found to be strongly associated with relationship dysfunction (Erbes et al., 2011; Monson et al., 2012; Riggs et al., 1998; Solomon et al., 2008). It is thought that emotional numbing can negatively impact relationships, yet there is limited understanding of the mechanisms of emotional numbing. Information processing theory developed by Litz and Gray (2001) suggests that emotional numbing is not a generalized response to all emotions and is actually specific to positive emotions. They believe that people with PTSD actually experience heightened negative emotions which then lead to emotional numbing to positive …

Women at DePauw University were propelled into positions of power on campus with the outbreak of World War I and America’s eventual entrance into the conflict. As male enlistment numbers rose, female students were forced to fill vacant jobs in organizations and clubs, as well as in the workforce. Working as educated people, the women at DePauw adjusted to the conflicting messages of the university and the government and developed their own understanding of what it meant to be a woman in World War I. Research has indicated that a global education, including study-abroad programs, is increasingly crucial in today’s world and offers intercultural, personal, academic, and career-related benefits to participants. However, there has been a paucity of academic research on best-class and study-abroad program designs for the deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The research to date has not included the experiences and perceptions of deaf students who participated in study-abroad programs. First impressions matter. Instruction librarians face unfamiliar audiences who can be apathetic or even hostile to learning research skills. By deliberately establishing ourselves as competent and charming at the beginning of each session, librarians can create a positive learning environment in which apathy and hostility melt away. Stand-up comedy experts Carter and Ajaye, as well as acting theorists Strasberg and Adler have developed approaches for influencing first impressions. This lively workshop will draw from these two disciplines to provide a practical method that instruction librarians can employ to produce original and entertaining self-introductions.

A Fortunate Rivalry: The Installation And History Of Pipe Organs In Three Churches In Natchez, Mississippi, Sharon Lynn Rouse

In the 1920s three large Möller pipe organs were installed within a three-block radius in three historic churches in Natchez, Mississippi, a small, eclectic town on the Mississippi River. What was the catalyst that resulted in a seemingly extravagant use ofresources? Through information available in church archives, newspapers, books, journals, and documentsfrom organ companies, this study traces the historyof the organs and suggests possible reason for their original installation. The factors influencing thepurchases include the geography of Natchez, the location fo the churches, savvy salesmen, and a healthy competition among the church congregations. A portfolio decision analysis strategic planning tool was developed for the Facilities Management Office at the University of Arkansas. The tool provides information to support budget allocation decisions based on their Strategic Planning Project List, project attributes (e.g, seat utilization, scheduling preferences, and sustainability rank), and budget constraints. The projects are evaluated using multiobjective decision analysis. We introduce dynamic value functions, which vary the range of the value measures based on the planning horizon, to evaluate the projects). As a popular historic work with constant and worldwide performances, the sexist and racist narratives disseminated by Giacomo Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly causes harmful social and political ramifications. Many scholars point to this opera specifically when discussing the fetishization of Asian females, and mention the title character as the quintessential example of damaging stereotypes. Thus, I conduct a postcolonial and feminist reading of Madama Butterfly, through analysis of the opera's libretto, the libretto sources, and the opera's score. I unravel the Orientalist assumptions that make up the foundation of the Butterfly narrative, and trace them as they make their way …

The focus of this research project was to determine whether thematic unit instruction or traditional, single-subject instruction was perceived to be the more effective and engaging way of teaching as decided by pre-service teachers. Research has shown that incorporating multiple subjects into one unit or topic of study helps to create more engagement and connections to which students can relate. In creating these connections, students can relate the content to their real life and in turn, better comprehend and retain the material. Even as the Church celebrates the 50th anniversary of Vatican Council II (1962-65), the people of God have not unfolded much of its meaning for Catholic pastoral practice and teaching. In the excitement of Council developments, many updates were implemented in the life of the church without proper catechesis, leaving many of the faithful – proponents and opponents of the Council - wholly uninformed about the continuity of Council reforms with Catholic tradition. Penetrating Toothbrush Injury In A Child: An Unusual Presentation, Mu Akhtar, K Ali

We present an unusual case of a penetrating toothbrush injury in a 6-year old child. The injury was sustained due to a fall at home and resulted in accidental implantation of an adult toothbrush in the facial soft tissues. The toothbrush was removed under general anaesthesia without any complications. This case highlights a rare presentation involving extra oral penetration of a toothbrush which is not reported previously in the literature.

Scholars from a variety of disciplines have done some incredible work on the subject of martyrdom, but the story is far from complete, particularly in terms of how and why it was so similar to the Roman concept of public deaths. The primary sources include the surviving Christian martyrologies, Greco-Roman philosophical treatises, and Roman, Christian, and Jewish histories. The current classroom acoustics standard (ANSI S12.60-2010) recommends core learning spaces not to exceed background noise level (BNL) of 35 dBA and reverberation time (RT) of 0.6 second, based on speech intelligibility performance mainly by the native English-speaking population. Existing literature has not correlated these recommended values well with student learning outcomes. With a growing population of non-native English speakers in American classrooms, the special needs for perceiving degraded speech among non-native listeners, either due to realistic room acoustics or talker foreign accent, have not been addressed in the current standard.
