Movement is as natural to humans as breathing is, and, yet, passivity starts early in schools. We are taught to sit still and in silence for long periods of time. By the time we reach adulthood and enter the workforce, we have almost forgotten our sense of embodiment. This lack of movement is counter-productive, not only to learning but to the development of creativity as well. For this project, I designed a tool to recapture the joy and playfulness of movement. Literature offers an opportunity to share in the lived experiences of others, experiences that as readers we may otherwise never personally encounter. Disability in our society is a reality, yet one that has not been fully embraced--not unlike issues with race, gender, age, or sexual orientation. Individuals begin to encounter many of these matters early in life, but as impressionable adolescents, a time when they begin to understand and navigate the world, often times they meet these experiences in books. Since books are an especially important part of how thoughts and attitudes are shaped, this paper seeks to analyze a …

Shakespeare's Evil: From Vice To Villain, Jennifer Katherine Staehle

This thesis serves as an investigation of the Elizabethan villain and the ways this character contributes to the ongoing dialogue concerning morality. Through the examination of the evolution of evil, villainy, and morality via Shakespeare's villains Richard and Iago, one can conclude that Shakespeare's contribution to the discussion of evil, which still goes on today, is that evil is a part of human nature. Not only are his villains humorous and entertaining, but Richard and Iago are relatable, pitiful, and raise questions about the evil inherent in human nature. These characters challenge the way Renaissance audiences habitually thought about right …

Using Coco Fusco's notion of the Reconquista to read ¿Quién puede borrar las huellas? of 2003 and Reconocimiento de un cuerpo of 2008, this paper investigates performance artist Regina José Galindo's conceptual approaches of action and inaction. Grappling with very specific histories of violence and repression in attempts to deal with the unresolved, Regina José Galindo's performances here concern themselves with permanence and impermance, confronting and reactivating the bodies of her viewers by restaging collective memory and trauma. Focusing on pieces conceived and staged in the Latin American context, this paper contextualizes Galindo's performance in Guatemala and Argentina as attempts …

Ashura (also spelled Ashoura) takes place on the tenth day of Muharram when Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husayn that took place in 61 AH/ 680 AD. It is a socio-religious phenomenon that combines ritualistic and theatrical behavior. My objective is to shed light on the interaction between ritual and theatrical behavior and how these work together to form the overall event. The first section introduces the historical background of Ashura, the second section explores the ritualistic and theatrical characteristics of Ashura, and the last, concluding section talks about the relation between the two aspects and how they …

What I will attempt in this essay is to bring the critique to Schoenberg's artistic legacy first on the grounds of the philosophical debate that was going on in those years in the German-speaking world, more specifically between Idealism and Materialism. The second step will be that of bringing the understanding of Schoenberg methods on a cognitive level; and in doing so, I will establish theoretical ties between those philosophical systems and cognitive systems; namely the Cognitivist and the Connectionist approaches. CROSSING BORDERS - WOMEN AGENT'S OF BRITAIN'S SPECIAL OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE (SOE) IN WORLD WAR TWO This thesis will explore the experiences of Odette Sansom Churchill Hallowes, a Franco-British woman recruited as a secret agent during World War II by the Special Operations Executive (SOE), a branch of the British Foreign Office, to infiltrate German-occupied France for the purpose of assisting the French Resistance in disrupting vital German operations in the lead-up to the Allied invasion of the continent. The Cephalonian Method has garnered much interest for its possibilities for engaging students in what could be an otherwise one-sided orientation program. This workshop will help attendees determine how and when to incorporate the Cephalonian Method into their sessions, how to discuss the technique with colleagues, and, most importantly, develop a set of Cephalonian Method questions that can be used in orientation and instruction sessions at their home libraries.

In spite of the gender policies that Kenyan government has enacted and the NGOs interventions to support girls’ education, high dropout rates still prevail due to: in school, out of school, political and administrative factors that are still problematic. There has been a plethora of research on barriers to girls’ education although there is paucity of research on the school environment’s potential in curbing the premature termination of girls’ formal education. CANTERA, a community organization in Ciudad Sandino with a popular education methodology, has a mission that emphasizes both personal development of its participants and social change in its community as outcomes of its work. The author of this paper looks at the connection between personal and community development in the youth programs at CANTERA, which include a variety of sociocultural and advocacy groups. The author spent three and a half weeks conducting participant observation of CANTERA's youth programs and interviewing its young people and staff members.
