Effect Of Aluminosilicate Type In The Physically Mixed Support On Wox/Sio2-Aluminosilicate Catalyst For Metathesis Of Ethylene And 2-Butene, Kittayanee Suwanthorn Jan 2014

Effect Of Aluminosilicate Type In The Physically Mixed Support On Wox/Sio2-Aluminosilicate Catalyst For Metathesis Of Ethylene And 2-Butene, Kittayanee Suwanthorn

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Silica supported tungsten catalysts were physically mixed with different acidic material types (similar particle size ≈ 53-106 µm) as an extra support and compared with the case as bi-support. All catalysts were tested in the metathesis reaction of ethylene and trans-2-butene to propylene and characterized by XRD, NH3-TPD, FTIR-pyridine, UV-vis, Raman, SEM-EDX, TPR and TPO, systematically comparing with reference catalyst, which were physically mixed with SiO2 as the extra support. Adding acidic material resulted in an increased total acidity of the catalysts. Moreover, it could improve the WOx dispersion on the surface and increase the active site precursors. These led …

Determination Of Interconnection Rate For Thailand's Mobile Telecommunication Industry, Thanoot Yamajinda Jan 2014

Determination Of Interconnection Rate For Thailand's Mobile Telecommunication Industry, Thanoot Yamajinda

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Relatively high and unbalanced level of termination rates can cause conflict between operators, and create burden for the consumers. It is within the regulator’s responsibility to step in and intervene with the situation. This thesis aims to find an appropriate solution to determine the mobile interconnection rate of Thailand. The calculation utilized a bottom-up cost model developed with modern efficient operation assumption. Three possible costing approaches, i.e. Long Run Incremental Cost (LRIC), Long Run Average Incremental Cost (LRAIC), and Long Run Average Incremental Cost Plus (LRAIC+) were studied. LRAIC+ was chosen as the standard basis for the calculation framework to …

Study And Analysis Of Electrolyte Imbalance In A Vanadium Redox Flow Battery, Kittima Ngamsai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Electrolyte imbalance which is an important problem for long-term operation of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) is studied and analyzed in this research. A cause of the electrolyte imbalance is firstly studied. The air oxidation of vanadium (V(II)) which is the side reaction in an electrolyte reservoir is investigated. The effects of the ratio of the electrolyte volume to air-electrolyte solution interface area and the ingredients of electrolyte solution on the rate of air oxidation of V(II) are investigated. The results show that the high ratio of the electrolyte volume to air-electrolyte solution interface area can retard the oxidation …

Laboratory Investigation And Numerical Modelling Of Track Foundation For High-Speed Railway Construction On Bangkok Soft Soil, Phitsanu Pholkainuwatra

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The government of Thailand has recently decided to launch a high-speed railway project to promote regional economy and improve the logistics of trade to connect with other countries in Southeast Asia community. Raising a complication regarding the load transfers will certainly induce many problems to the railway system. Moreover, the constructions of railway substructures in the past often involve the low quality of materials especially in the Central Plain of Thailand. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the sources of construction materials for railway substructure materials. This study consists of two main objectives. The first objective is to investigate the …

Effect Of Citric Acid On Hydrodesulfurization Activity Of Dibenzothiophene And 4,6 Dimethyldibenzothiophene Over Como Catalyst On Al2o3-Zro2 Support, Pawinee Sintarako Jan 2014

Effect Of Citric Acid On Hydrodesulfurization Activity Of Dibenzothiophene And 4,6 Dimethyldibenzothiophene Over Como Catalyst On Al2o3-Zro2 Support, Pawinee Sintarako

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The effect of citric acid on the HDS activity of DBT and 4,6 DMDBT on CoMo/γ-Al2O3-ZrO2 catalysts has been investigated. It has been found that the CoMo/γ-Al2O3-ZrO2 physically mixed with 10wt.% of ZrO2 shows the highest HDS conversion of DBT in the presence of pyridine. The addition of ZrO2 as a secondary support obviously suppresses the influence of pyridine on HDS activity of DBT over CoMo/γ-Al2O3 based catalyst. The synergistic benefits of ZrO2 and citric acid on HDS activity of DBT and 4,6 DMDBT over CoMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst are not found. The modification of CoMo/γ-Al2O3 catalyst by citric acid can inhibit …

Innovative Wind Energy Micro-Generation System: A Case Study For Rooftop Turbine Ventilator, Ponnson Kaewtip Jan 2014

Innovative Wind Energy Micro-Generation System: A Case Study For Rooftop Turbine Ventilator, Ponnson Kaewtip

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Wind micro-generation has become an approach for new age wind energy. Whereas, the conventional and centralized wind farms only work well with wind speed beyond 8 m/s, these are only capable when locating within the remote wind zones. To develop wind-power generation that can generate electricity right at point of uses, will reduce transmission and distribution losses and minimize investment costs. This study uses innovative approach to develop Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT), through redesign and modification an internal frame of standard rooftop ventilators, transforming into Rooftop Turbine Ventilator (RTV) micro-generation system, based on VAWT. In order to cope with …

Effects Of Acemannan Deacetylation On Biological Activity Of Gingival Fibroblast, Jaroenporn Chokboribal Jan 2014

Effects Of Acemannan Deacetylation On Biological Activity Of Gingival Fibroblast, Jaroenporn Chokboribal

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Acemannan extracted from Aloe vera gel is unique in the presence of acetylated mannose residues and was reported to accelerate mice buccal wound healing. In order to assert structural and biological roles of mannose acetyl groups, high-molecular-mass DeAcAM of various DDAs were prepared by alkaline hydrolysis at 80°C for 5 min using varied concentrations of NaOH. All of the DeAcAMs are not cytotoxic to HGFs and their effects on cell proliferation and VEFG and type I collagen expressions were further investigated. In general, bioactivities of the DeAcAMs were lost to some extents upon the removal of the mannose acetyl groups …

We report on an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range 50–1000 Hz with the first derivative of frequency in the range −8.9 × 10−10 Hz s−1 to zero in two years of data collected during LIGO's fifth science run. Our results employ a Hough transform technique, introducing a χ2 test and analysis of coincidences between the signal levels in years 1 and 2 of observations that offers a significant improvement in the product of strain sensitivity with compute cycles per data sample compared to previously published searches. Since our search yields no surviving candidates, we present …

We present an implementation of the -statistic to carry out the first search in data from the Virgo laser interferometric gravitational wave detector for periodic gravitational waves from a priori unknown, isolated rotating neutron stars. We searched a frequency f0 range from 100 Hz to 1 kHz and the frequency dependent spindown f1 range from Hz s−1 to zero. A large part of this frequency–spindown space was unexplored by any of the all-sky searches published so far. Our method consisted of a coherent search over two-day periods using the -statistic, followed by a search for coincidences among the …

Treatment Of Calibration Uncertainty In Multi-Baseline Cross-Correlation Searches For Gravitational Waves, J. T. Whelan, E. L. Robinson, Joseph D. Romano, E. H. Thrane Jan 2014

Treatment Of Calibration Uncertainty In Multi-Baseline Cross-Correlation Searches For Gravitational Waves, J. T. Whelan, E. L. Robinson, Joseph D. Romano, E. H. Thrane

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Uncertainty in the calibration of gravitational wave (GW) detector data leads to systematic errors, which must be accounted for in setting limits on the strength of GW signals. When cross-correlation measurements are made using data from a pair of instruments, as in searches for a stochastic GW background, the calibration uncertainties of the individual instruments can be combined into an uncertainty associated with the pair. With the advent of multi-baseline GW observation (e.g., networks consisting of multiple detectors such as the LIGO observatories and Virgo), a more sophisticated treatment is called for. We have described how the correlations between calibration …

Parallel Phase Modulation Scheme For Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Detectors, M. T. Hartman, V. Quetschke, D. B. Tanner, D. H. Reitze, G. Mueller

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) requires multiple frequency sidebands to disentangle all of the main interferometer's length signals. This paper presents the results of a risk reduction experiment to produce two sets of frequency sidebands in parallel, avoiding mixed 'sidebands on sidebands'. Two phase modulation frequencies are applied to separate Electro-Optic Modulators (EOMs), with one EOM in each of the two arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In this system the Mach-Zehnder's arm lengths are stabilized to reduce relative intensity noise in the recombined carrier beam by feeding a corrective control signal back to the Rubidium Titanyl Phosphate (RTP) EOM crystals to drive …

Pt-Symmetric Acoustics, Xuefeng Zhu, Hamidreza Ramezani, Chengzhi Shi, Jie Zhu, Xiang Zhang Jan 2014

Pt-Symmetric Acoustics, Xuefeng Zhu, Hamidreza Ramezani, Chengzhi Shi, Jie Zhu, Xiang Zhang

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We introduce here the concept of acoustic parity-time (PT) symmetry and demonstrate the extraordinary scattering characteristics of the acoustic PT medium. On the basis of exact calculations, we show how an acoustic PT -symmetric medium can become unidirectionally transparent at given frequencies. Combining such a PT -symmetric medium with transformation acoustics, we design two-dimensional symmetric acoustic cloaks that are unidirectionally invisible in a prescribed direction. Our results open new possibilities for designing functional acoustic devices with directional responses.

Unidirectional Lasing Emerging From Frozen Light In Nonreciprocal Cavities, Hamidreza Ramezani, S. Kalish, I. Vitebskiy, T. Kottos Jan 2014

Unidirectional Lasing Emerging From Frozen Light In Nonreciprocal Cavities, Hamidreza Ramezani, S. Kalish, I. Vitebskiy, T. Kottos

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We introduce a class of unidirectional lasing modes associated with the frozen mode regime of nonreciprocal slow-wave structures. Such asymmetric modes can only exist in cavities with broken timereversal and space inversion symmetries. Their lasing frequency coincides with a spectral stationary inflection point of the underlying passive structure and is virtually independent of its size. These unidirectional lasers can be indispensable components of photonic integrated circuitry.

This paper reports on an unmodeled, all-sky search for gravitational waves from merging intermediate mass black hole binaries (IMBHB). The search was performed on data from the second joint science run of the LIGO and Virgo detectors (July 2009–October 2010) and was sensitive to IMBHBs with a range up to ∼200 Mpc, averaged over the possible sky positions and inclinations of the binaries with respect to the line of sight. No significant candidate was found. Upper limits on the coalescence-rate density of nonspinning IMBHBs with total masses between 100 and 450 M⊙ and mass ratios between 0.25 and 1 were …

Vanishing Power Lines And Emerging Distributed Generation, Gina S. Warren Jan 2014

Vanishing Power Lines And Emerging Distributed Generation, Gina S. Warren

Faculty Scholarship

Experts predict that distributed energy will contribute as much as twenty percent of the U.S. power supply by 2020. While no one will wake up tomorrow morning to an entirely new energy distribution system — complete with solar panels on the roof and a wind turbine in the back yard — distributed generation is receiving significant attention as the disruptive technology that will ultimately revolutionize the way energy is delivered in the United States. The reason for this shift is, in part, due to new technology that allows for more flexible localized generation of energy, and in part due to …

A Study Of Self-Concept In At-Risk Middle School Children Related To Behavior And Academic Performance, Tara Wade Franklin Jan 2014

A Study Of Self-Concept In At-Risk Middle School Children Related To Behavior And Academic Performance, Tara Wade Franklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that are associated with the development of self-concept and how self-concept influences or interacts with academic performance and behavior. This research study asked two questions: (1) what assists in the development of self-concept, and (2) how does self-concept impact academic performance and behavior in at-risk middle school students? Using evidence-based research, parental involvement, gender, and ethnicity were selected as key factors associated with the development of self-concept in adolescence. This study proposed that students with high self-concept would have positive academic and behavioral performance. Consequently, students with low self-concept would …

Collision And Diffusion In Microwave Breakdown Of Nitrogen Gas In And Around Microgaps, J. D. Campbell, A. Bowman Iii, G. T. Lenters, Stephen K. Remillard Jan 2014

Collision And Diffusion In Microwave Breakdown Of Nitrogen Gas In And Around Microgaps, J. D. Campbell, A. Bowman Iii, G. T. Lenters, Stephen K. Remillard

Faculty Publications

The microwave induced breakdown of N-2 gas in microgaps was modeled using the collision frequency between electrons and neutral molecules and the effective electric field concept. Low pressure breakdown at the threshold electric field occurs outside the gap, but at high pressures it is found to occur inside the microgap with a large threshold breakdown electric field corresponding to a very large electron oscillation amplitude. Three distinct pressure regimes are apparent in the microgap breakdown: a low pressure multipactor branch, a mid-pressure Paschen branch, both of which occur in the space outside the microgap, and a high pressure diffusion-drift branch, …

Investigation Of The Seasonal Variations Of Aerosol Physicochemical Properties And Their Impact On Cloud Condensation Nuclei Number Concentration, Timothy Logan Jan 2014

Investigation Of The Seasonal Variations Of Aerosol Physicochemical Properties And Their Impact On Cloud Condensation Nuclei Number Concentration, Timothy Logan

Theses and Dissertations

Aerosols are among the most complex yet widely studied components of the atmosphere not only due to the seasonal variability of their physical and chemical properties but also their effects on climate change. The three main aerosol types that are known to affect the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere are: mineral dust, anthropogenic pollution, and biomass burning aerosols. In order to understand how these aerosols affect the atmosphere, this dissertation addresses the following three scientific questions through a combination of surface and satellite observations:

SQ1: What are the seasonal and regional variations of aerosol physico-chemical properties at four selected …

Star-forming regions that are visible at 3.6 μm and Hα but not in the u, g, r, i, z bands of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are measured in five nearby spiral galaxies to find extinctions averaging ∼3.8 mag and stellar masses averaging ∼5 × 104 M. These regions are apparently young star complexes embedded in dark filamentary shock fronts connected with spiral arms. The associated cloud masses are ∼107 M. The conditions required to make such complexes are explored, including gravitational instabilities in spiral-shocked gas and compression of incident clouds. We find that instabilities are too slow for a …

We have mapped the distribution of young and old stars in the gaseous H i warp of NGC 4565. We find a clear correlation of young stars (< 600 Myr) with the warp but no coincident old stars (> 1 Gyr), which places an upper limit on the age of the structure. The formation rate of the young stars, which increased ∼ 300 Myr ago relative to the surrounding regions, is (6.3+2.5 −1.5) × 10−5 M yr−1 kpc−2. This implies a ∼ 60 ± 20 Gyr depletion time of the H i warp, similar to the timescales calculated for the outer H i disks of nearby spiral galaxies. While some stars …

We report the discovery of a new faint dwarf galaxy, GHOSTS I, using HST/ACS data from one of our GHOSTS (Galaxy Halos, Outer disks, Substructure, Thick disk, and Star clusters) fields. Its detected individual stars populate an approximately 1 mag range of its luminosity function (LF). Using synthetic color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to compare with the galaxy’s CMD, we find that the colors and magnitudes of GHOSTS I’s individual stars are most consistent with being young helium-burning and asymptotic giant branch stars at a distance of ∼12±2 Mpc. Morphologically, GHOSTS I appears to be actively forming stars, so we tentatively classify …

The morphology of galaxies can be quantified to some degree using a set of scale-invariant parameters. Concentration (C), asymmetry (A), smoothness (S), the Gini index (G), the relative contribution of the brightest pixels to the secondorder moment of the flux (M20), ellipticity (E), and the Gini index of the second-order moment (GM) have all been applied to morphologically classify galaxies at various wavelengths. Here, we present a catalog of these parameters for the Spitzer Survey of stellar structure in Galaxies, a volume-limited, near-infrared (NIR) imaging survey of nearby galaxies using the 3.6 and 4.5μm channels of the Infrared Array Camera …

Gravity Effect On Electrical Field Generation And Charge Carriers Transfer During Combustion Synthesis Of Sulfides, A. A. Markov, I. A. Filimonov, Karen S. Martirosyan

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The effect of gravity on the electric potential generated by the combustion synthesis of zinc sulfide is analyzed using the numerical simulation. Recent experimental studies on generation of electric voltage during combustion synthesis of zinc sulfide (ZnS) have revealed high voltage signals (4 V) with duration about 1 s, which are much higher than those produced by the gas–solid and solid–solid combustion reactions studied previously. These data have raised the question about mechanism of such a phenomenon. In our previous work we developed a novel (distributed) model describing the electric potential generation during combustion synthesis of sulfides (CSS) that didn't …

The ternary oxide system Y-Fe-O presents fascinating magnetic properties that are sensitive to the crystalline size of particles. There is a major challenge to fabricate these materials in nano-crystalline forms due to particle conglomeration during nucleation and synthesis. In this paper we report the fabrication of nano sized crystalline yttrium ferrite by solution combustion synthesis (SCS) where yttrium and iron nitrates were used as metal precursors with glycine as a fuel. The magnetic properties of the product can be selectively controlled by adjusting the ratio of glycine to metal nitrates. Yttrium ferrite nano-powder was obtained by using three concentration of …

We present a method to obtain numerically accurate values of configurational free energies of semiflexible macromolecular systems, based on the technique of thermodynamic integration combined with normal-mode analysis of a reference system subject to harmonic constraints. Compared with previous free-energy calculations that depend on a reference state, our approach introduces two innovations, namely, the use of internal coordinates to constrain the reference states and the ability to freely select these reference states. As a consequence, it is possible to explore systems that undergo substantially larger fluctuations than those considered in previous calculations, including semiflexible biopolymers having arbitrary ratios of contour …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The large ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) population in the City of Chicago has caused various conflicts including general nuisance, property damage, economic losses, and threats to human health and safety. Several studies have shown a relationship between ring-billed gulls and increased levels of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) in nearshore waters. Results of tests for E. coli have led to the issuance of swim advisories at Chicago beaches.

The objectives of the Chicago Ring-billed Gull Damage Management Project were to (1) reduce the local production of ring-billed gulls, (2) reduce the …
