Describing Students' Talk About Physical Science Phenomena Outside And Inside The Classroom: A Case Of Secondary School Students From Maragoli, Western Region Of Kenya, Grace Nyandiwa Orado

Dissertations - ALL

Because of cultural and linguistic influences on science learning involving students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, calls have been made for teachers to enact teaching that is sensitive to these students' backgrounds. However, most of the research involving such students has tended to focus on students at elementary grade levels from predominantly two linguistic backgrounds, Hispanic and Haitian Creole, learning science concepts mainly in the life sciences. Also, most of the studies examined classroom interactions between teachers and the students and among students. Not much attention had been paid to how students talk about ideas inherent in scientific phenomena …

Network Theoretic Analyses And Enhancements Of Evolutionary Algorithms, Karthik Kuber May 2014

Network Theoretic Analyses And Enhancements Of Evolutionary Algorithms, Karthik Kuber

Dissertations - ALL

Information in evolutionary algorithms is available at multiple levels; however most analyses focus on the individual level. This dissertation extracts useful information from networks and communities formed by examining interrelationships between individuals in the populations as they change with time.

Network theoretic analyses are extremely useful in multiple fields and applications, e.g., biology (regulation of gene expression), organizational behavior (social networks), and intelligence data analysis (message traffic on the Internet). Evolving populations are represented as dynamic networks, and we show that changes in population characteristics can be recognized at the level of the networks representing successive generations, with implications for …

The "Defective" Generation: Disability In Modernist Literature, Deborah Susan Mcleod May 2014

The "Defective" Generation: Disability In Modernist Literature, Deborah Susan Mcleod

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

The "Defective" Generation: Disability in Modernist Literature aims to provide an analysis of how Anglo-American authors in the early twentieth century conceived of, utilized, and portrayed disability in their fiction. Building on the existing scholarship in the field of Disability Studies, I argue that modernists revise the tradition of representation to make disabilities a generational trait rather than a sign of individual deviance. In novel after novel, multiple characters exhibit some form of illness or impairment, which appears as both cause and effect of the instabilities and traumas of modernity. Like many of their predecessors, then, these authors portray …

Identity Negotiation: Straight-Ally Conservative Christians In The Mid-South, Heather Jane Dannison May 2014

Identity Negotiation: Straight-Ally Conservative Christians In The Mid-South, Heather Jane Dannison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Although recently literature related to the emergence and development of individuals who identify as straight-allies, or heterosexual individuals who advocate for the GLBT community in some way has been completed, little is known about straight-allies who also affirm a conservative Christian identity. Using narrative inquiry and queer theory, this study sought to better understand the experiences and stories of individuals who affirm to these two seemingly dichotomous identities in order to broaden the scope of research on this population. Unstructured narrative inquiries were utilized along with both constant comparison and contextualization for the analysis of this work. Findings indicated that …

Pageant Moms: Mothers' Accounts Of Their Participation In Child Beauty Pageants, Darla Clare Smith May 2014

Pageant Moms: Mothers' Accounts Of Their Participation In Child Beauty Pageants, Darla Clare Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Using the voices of nine mothers whose daughters participate in child beauty pageants, I analyzed these mothers' accounts of their participation in an activity widely viewed as deviant using neutralization theory. In this most recent wave of media attention towards child beauty pageants the focus has shifted away from the mothers and toward the pageant industry. By focusing on the mothers' accounts of their participation in child beauty pageants this study shows the ways in which these women think about and justify their participation. Their accounts demonstrated that while these mothers recognized that child beauty pageants are seen as deviant, …

Identifying Tf Target Genes Using Natural Language Processing And Literature Based Discovery Approach, Sk Md Nahid Hasan May 2014

Identifying Tf Target Genes Using Natural Language Processing And Literature Based Discovery Approach, Sk Md Nahid Hasan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Recent developments in high-throughput genomic technologies allow researchers to investigate gene expression levels and genetic variation associated with phenotypes and outcomes. However, understanding the mechanisms responsible for regulation of gene expression and identification of critical components in the regulatory pathways responsible for phenotypes and diseases remain challenging. This thesis proposes a novel method to identify genes which are likely to be regulated by a given transcription factor (TF) based on functional information extracted from the biomedical literature. Existing methods for finding potential targets of a transcription factor utilize laboratory approaches such as Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP). By mining the literature, we …

Oscar Kokoschka’S Black Portraits: Emotions And Personality In Paint, Elizabeth G. Muir May 2014

Oscar Kokoschka’S Black Portraits: Emotions And Personality In Paint, Elizabeth G. Muir

Constructing the Past

The first oil paintings Oskar Kokoschka created after departing the Wiener Werkstätte in 1909 were his scandalizing black portraits, met with near universal hatred by the public, the critics, and the sitter of these portraits. This paper will explore the radical elements of these black portraits in Kokoschka’s depiction of movement, his use of hands as signifiers, his method of painting, and his desire to depict the genuine character of his sitters.

Maleeldil And Mutual Society: A Modern Woman's Defense Of Jane Studdock, Crystal Hurd

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

Over the past few decades, many scholars and casual readers have derided C.S. Lewis as a misogynist for the "expulsion" of Susan from Aslan's Country. However, closer examinations of Lewis's underlying philosophy and previous experiences with women lend us exceptional insight into his changing perspective as well as his portrayal of feminine characters. Written before his wildly popular The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis's science fiction or Ransom trilogy provides a glimpse into his developing talents as a fiction writer but also provides crucial commentary on the gender issues plaguing the twentieth century. This paper will investigate, through his correspondence, …

Mechanical Engineering Presentations And Conference Materials

A general-purpose multi-phase and multi-component computer model capable of solving the complex problems encountered in the agent substrate interaction is developed. The model solves the transient and time-accurate mass and momentum governing equations in a three dimensional space. The provisions for considering all the inter-phase activities (solidification, evaporation, condensation, etc.) are included in the model. The chemical reactions among all phases are allowed and the products of the existing chemical reactions in all three phases are possible. The impact of chemical reaction products on the transport properties in porous media such as porosity, capillary pressure, and permeability is considered. Numerous …

Graphene-Supported Metal Nanoparticles And Its Potential Civilian And Military Applications, Hany A. Elazab Dr May 2014

Graphene-Supported Metal Nanoparticles And Its Potential Civilian And Military Applications, Hany A. Elazab Dr

Chemical Engineering

It is now well established that nanoparticles (1-100 nm) exhibit unique chemical and physical properties that differ from those of the corresponding bulk materials. The dependence of the properties of nanoscale materials on the size, shape and composition of the nanocrystal is a phenomenon of both fundamental scientific interest and many practical and technological applications. These properties are often different, and sometimes superior, to those of the corresponding bulk materials. Due to its unique properties and high surface area, Graphene has become a good candidate as an effective solid support for metal catalysts. The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2010 …

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND: Challenges remain to find ways to support patients with depression who have low levels of physical activity (PA) to overcome perceived barriers and enhance the perceived value of PA for preventing future relapse. There is an evidence-base for behavioural activation (BA) for depression, which focuses on supporting patients to restore activities that have been avoided, but practitioners have no specific training in promoting PA. We aimed to design and evaluate an integrated BA and PA (BAcPAc) practitioner-led, written, self-help intervention to enhance both physical and mental health. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is informed by the Medical Research Council Complex Intervention …

Measuring The Adaptation Of Military Response During The Second Seminole War Florida (1835-1842): Kocoa And The Role Of A West Point Military Academy Education, Michelle Diane Sivilich

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Conflict archaeology is a fairly new discipline and is in the process of defining its methods and theories. Recently, the American Battlefield Protection Program has started requiring that grant applicants perform a KOCOA analysis. KOCOA is a modern military technique and stands for Key terrain, Obstacle, Cover and Concealment, Observation, and Avenues of Approach. However, this method was developed for modern warfare, and its adoption by the archaeological community has not yet been analyzed. I argue that this method needs a few modifications to make it more applicable to historical research and that it can be broadened to investigate more …

Ecosystem Services: Challenges And Opportunities For Hydrologic Modeling To Support Decision Making, Andrew John Guswa, Kate A. Brauman, Casey Brown, Perrine Hamel, Bonnie L. Keeler, Susan Stratton Sayre

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Ecosystem characteristics and processes provide significant value to human health and well- being, and there is growing interest in quantifying those values. Of particular interest are water-related eco- system services and the incorporation of their value into local and regional decision making. This presents multiple challenges and opportunities to the hydrologic-modeling community. To motivate advances in water-resources research, we first present three common decision contexts that draw upon an ecosystem- service framework: scenario analysis, payments for watershed services, and spatial planning. Within these contexts, we highlight the particular challenges to hydrologic modeling, and then present a set of opportunities that …

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Reconciling the irreconcilable is a primary struggle in aerobic nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Although nitrogenase is oxygen and reactive oxygen species-labile, oxygen tension is required to sustain respiration. In the nitrogen-fixing Frankia, various strategies have been developed through evolution to control the respiration and nitrogen-fixation balance. Here, we assessed the effect of different oxygen tensions on Frankia sp. strain CcI3 growth, vesicle production, and gene expression under different oxygen tensions. Both biomass and vesicle production were correlated with elevated oxygen levels under both nitrogen-replete and nitrogen-deficient conditions. The mRNA levels for the nitrogenase structural genes (nifHDK) were high under hypoxic and hyperoxic …

Hosts can manage parasitic infections using an array of tactics, which are likely to vary contingent on coevolutionary history between the host and the parasite. Here we asked whether coping ability of congeners that differ in host-parasite coevolutionary history differed in response to experimental infections with a coccidian parasite. House sparrows (Passer domesticus) and gray-headed sparrows (Passer griseus) are sympatric and ecologically similar, but house sparrows are recent colonizers of Kenya, the site of our comparison, whereas gray-headed sparrows are native. We evaluated three variables as barometers of infection coping ability: vertical flight, pectoral muscle size, …
