Canine behaviours that are both desirable and undesirable to owners have a demonstrable genetic component. Some behaviours are breed-specific, such as the livestock guarding by maremmas and flank sucking seen in Dobermanns. While the identification of genes responsible for common canine diseases is rapidly advancing, those genes underlying behaviours remain elusive. The challenges of accurately defining and measuring behavioural phenotypes remain an obstacle, and the use of variable phenotyping methods has prevented meta-analysis of behavioural studies. International standardised testing protocols and terminology in canine behavioural evaluations should facilitate selection against behavioural disorders in the modern dog and optimise breeding success …

Background: Failure of adipocytes to expand during periods of energy excess can result in undesirable metabolic consequences such as ectopic fat accumulation and insulin resistance. Blinded screening studies have indicated that Artemisia scoparia (SCO) extracts can enhance adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation in cultured adipocytes. The present study tested the hypothesis that SCO treatment modulates fat cell development and function in vitro and insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue in vivo. Methods: In vitro experiments utilized a Gal4-PPARγ ligand binding domain (LBD) fusion protein-luciferase reporter assay to examine PPARγ activation. To investigate the ability of SCO to modulate adipogenesis and mature …

Mechanical Engineering Presentations And Conference Materials
This work presents the development of a multi-input, multi-output neural network structure to predict the time dependent concentration of chemical agents as they participate in chemical reaction with environmental substrates or moisture content within these substrates. The neural network prediction is based on a computationally or experimentally produced database that includes the concentration of all chemicals presents (reactants and products) as a function of the chemical agent droplet size, wind speed, temperature, and turbulence. The utilization of this prediction structure is made userfriendly via an easy-to-use graphical user interface. Furthermore, upon the knowledge of the time-varying environmental parameters (wind speed …

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Landscapes in agricultural systems continue to undergo significant change, and the loss of biodiversity is an ever-increasing threat. Although habitat restoration is beneficial, management actions do not always result in the desired outcome. Managers must understand why management actions fail; yet, past studies have focused on assessing habitat attributes at a single spatial scale, and often fail to consider the importance of ecological mechanisms that act across spatial scales. We located survey sites across southern Nebraska, USA and conducted point counts to estimate Ring-necked Pheasant abundance, an economically important species to the region, while simultaneously quantifying landscape effects using a …
Alternative Splicing In Plant Immunity, Shengming Yang, Fang Tang, Hongyan Zhu
Alternative Splicing In Plant Immunity, Shengming Yang, Fang Tang, Hongyan Zhu
Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications
Alternative splicing (AS) occurs widely in plants and can provide the main source of transcriptome and proteome diversity in an organism. AS functions in a range of physiological processes, including plant disease resistance, but its biological roles and functional mechanisms remain poorly understood. Many plant disease resistance (R) genes undergo AS, and several R genes require alternatively spliced transcripts to produce R proteins that can specifically recognize pathogen invasion. In the finely-tuned process of R protein activation, the truncated isoforms generated by AS may participate in plant disease resistance either by suppressing the negative regulation of initiation of …

Cell Modeling Of Heme Deficiency Using Ferrochelatase Mutations, Gloria C. Ferreira, Zhen Shi
USF Patents
Provided herein, is a means for development of ferrochelatase variants with improved tolerance towards N-methyl protoporphyrin. Also disclosed are cell assay systems utilizing the variants, as the variants would confer resistance to N-methyl protoporphyrin inhibition and thereby keep heme synthesis uninterrupted. The variants contain loop mutations that affect the NMPP-ferrochelatase interaction, and different degrees of NMPP tolerance are obtained with the introduction of loop mutations in wild-type ferrochelatase. Also disclosed is kinetic mechanism of inhibition of ferrochelatase by NMPP, using the disclosed variants whose mutations in the “porphyrin-interacting loop” motif weakened the potency of NMPP as an inhibitor.

Background
The ability of science to produce experimental data has outpaced the ability to effectively visualize and integrate the data into a conceptual framework that can further higher order understanding. Multidimensional and shape-based observational data of regenerative biology presents a particularly daunting challenge in this regard. Large amounts of data are available in regenerative biology, but little progress has been made in understanding how organisms such as planaria robustly achieve and maintain body form. An example of this kind of data can be found in a new repository (PlanformDB) that encodes descriptions of planaria experiments and morphological outcomes using a …

Broadband, Non-Destructive Characterisation Of Pec-Backed Materials Using A Dual-Ridged-Waveguide Probe, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Michael J. Havrilla
Faculty Publications
A new probe which utilises a dual-ridged waveguide to provide broadband, non-destructive (ND) material characterisation measurements of a perfect electric conductor (PEC)-backed material is introduced. The new probe possesses a bandwidth similar to existing coaxial probes and is structurally robust like rectangular waveguide probes. The combinations of these two qualities make it especially attractive for ND inspection/evaluation applications in the field. The theoretical development of the dual-ridged-waveguide probe is discussed. A magnetic field integral equation is derived by applying Love’s equivalence theorem and enforcing the continuity of transverse fields at the dual-ridged-waveguide aperture. The magnetic field integral equation is then …
Targeting Cancer Metabolism With Ketosis And Hyperbaric Oxygen, Angela M. Poff
Targeting Cancer Metabolism With Ketosis And Hyperbaric Oxygen, Angela M. Poff
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cancer cells exhibit an abnormal metabolic phenotype characterized by glycolysis and lactate fermentation in the presence of oxygen, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect. This dysregulated metabolism plays an important role in every aspect of cancer progression, from tumorigenesis to invasion and metastasis. The Warburg effect is a common phenotype shared by most, if not all, cancer types. It is especially prominent in metastatic tumors, which are notoriously resistant to treatment and responsible for the majority of cancer-related deaths. Thus, metabolic therapies which target the Warburg effect could offer novel therapeutic options for most cancer patients, including those with …

Using Otolith Elemental Composition To Track The Habitat Use, Movements, And Life History Patterns Of Common Snook (Centropomus Undecimalis) And Red Drum (Sciaenops Ocellatus) In The Tampa Bay Estuary, Holly Jacqueline Rolls
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Knowledge of fish habitat use and connectivity is critical for understanding the structure and dynamics of fish populations and, therefore, necessary for the implementation of successful fisheries management strategies. Tagging is an effective means of providing such information, and the elemental composition contained within fish otoliths is increasingly being used as a natural tag. The chemical composition of otoliths reflects the incorporation of elements from different water bodies and can thus be used to understand the habitat use, movements, and life history patterns of fishes. To assess the applicability of otolith elemental composition as a tagging technique within the Tampa …

Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors: Role In Gene Expression And Development Of New Anticancer Drug Candidates, Mohamed Ammar
Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors: Role In Gene Expression And Development Of New Anticancer Drug Candidates, Mohamed Ammar
Honors Scholar Theses
Histone deactylase (HDAC) suppresses gene expression by removing acetyl groups from lysine residues in chromatin. Inhibitors play an important role by restoring the ability of the gene to be expressed, which is crucial if the gene is a tumor suppressor gene. HDACs consist of four classes, spanning 18 isozymes. Current HDAC inhibitors approved and in development are considered pan-inhibitors, blocking a wide array of HDAC isozymes, increasing the risk of adverse effects. b-thujaplicin is derived from the heartwood of trees in the cupressaceae family and from it is derived the troplone scaffold. The tropolone scaffold involves several advantages over other …
