Nanostructured Aluminum Oxide (Nao): Enhanced Fluorescence Imaging And Sensing, Xiang Li
Nanostructured Aluminum Oxide (Nao): Enhanced Fluorescence Imaging And Sensing, Xiang Li
Doctoral Dissertations
A new fluorescence enhancement technical platform based on nanostructured aluminum oxide (NAO) has been discovered. Experiments reveal that this new platform can enhance the fluorescence signals up to two or three orders of magnitude compared to a traditional glass substrate platform. In order to realize a large-scale arrayed fluorescence biosensing platform for high throughput applications, a rapid and cost-effective process has been developed to fabricate the micropatterned NAO of a variety of shapes. An optical characterization technology, by introducing UV light irradiance, has been found for the first time to determine if the NAO has been formed from Al and …

Pleiotrophin (PTN) is an extracellular matrix-associated protein with neurotrophic and neuroprotective effects that is involved in a variety of neurodevelopmental processes. Data regarding the cognitive-behavioral and neuroanatomical phenotype of pleiotrophin knockout (KO) mice is limited. The purpose of this study was to more fully characterize this phenotype, with emphasis on the domains of learning and memory, cognitive-behavioral flexibility, exploratory behavior and anxiety, social behavior, and the neuronal and vascular microstructure of the lateral entorhinal cortex (EC). PTN KOs exhibited cognitive rigidity, heightened anxiety, behavioral reticence in novel contexts and novel social interactions suggestive of neophobia, and lamina-specific decreases in neuronal …

Combining Site Specific Data With Geospatial Analysis To Identify Variable Rate Irrigation Opportunities In Irrigated Agricultural Fields., K. A. Miller, T. H. Lo, J. D. Luck, D. M. Heeren
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Increasing demand for improving irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) across irrigated croplands has producers looking for new opportunities to conserve water and maintain their crop production levels. Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) technology may provide opportunities to enhance IWUE, but as with site-specific crop management of other crop inputs, all fields may not benefit from an approach which utilizes VRI. To consider the potential benefits of VRI, it will be necessary to examine multiple site-specific spatial data layers (e.g., crop yield, soil type/texture, and terrain) as well as the current conditions within a field using geospatial analysis techniques.

Diet Of Kit-Rearing Female Martens In Northern Michigan, Angela Kujawa, Paul Keenlance, Joseph Jacquot
Diet Of Kit-Rearing Female Martens In Northern Michigan, Angela Kujawa, Paul Keenlance, Joseph Jacquot
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
The American marten (Martes americana) is a small, slender-bodied, carnivorous mammal found throughout the northern portion of North America. Our study focused on the populations in the Manistee National Forest in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Food availability is a large limiting factor to American marten populations due to their high metabolism and low fat storage. This can be especially important for lactating females that may have up to five kits to sustain. Kit-rearing female martens were fitted with radio collars and radio telemetry was used to track them to den sites. Scat, …

The Transformative Power Of Ketamine: Psychedelic States And A Personal History Of Transformation, Philip E. Wolfson
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
A discussion of the nature of transformation and its relationship to psychedelic experiences— particularly ketamine experiences—is presented and discussed along with a schema for thinking about types of states that may be encountered and transformations that may occur related to psychedelic use and practice. This is followed by a longitudinal historical approach for portraying and examining personal transformation along with a proposed instrument— The Transformational Codex—for cataloging that history and the elements that compose it.

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: A juvenile Crowned Eagle was tagged at its nest with a satellite transmitter. The Crowned Eagle (Harpyhaliaetus coronatus) is one of the most unknown raptor species from the American continent. Their current distribution ranges from central Brazil to central Argentina, with a total population of 350–1500 individuals across this large area, being thus largely fragmented.
Results: During the three years of tracking the bird concentrated its movements in a range spanning for 12845 km2, but concentrating mainly in four smaller areas accounting for 3073 km2. The locations were recorded mainly over shrubland habitats …
Individual Differences In Personality Predict Externalizing Versus Internalizing Outcomes Following Sexual Assault, Jessica L. Combs, Carol E. Jordan, Gregory T. Smith
Individual Differences In Personality Predict Externalizing Versus Internalizing Outcomes Following Sexual Assault, Jessica L. Combs, Carol E. Jordan, Gregory T. Smith
Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women Publications
For some women, the experience of being sexually assaulted leads to increases in externalizing behaviors, such as problem drinking and drug use; for other women, the experience of being assaulted leads to increases in internalizing distress, such as depression or anxiety. It is possible that preassault personality traits interact with sexual assault to predict externalizing or internalizing distress. We tested whether concurrent relationships among personality, sexual assault, and distress were consistent with such a model. We surveyed 750 women just prior to their freshman year at a large public university. Consistent with our hypotheses, at low levels of negative urgency …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
In 2013, the Bioresource Research Centre (Islamabad, Pakistan) conducted a comprehensive census of the remaining dancing and bear-baiting bears in Pakistan. This involved locating and counting the actual involved bears and bear keepers (kalandars), collecting detailed socio-economic data from the bear-keepers, and identifying attitudes and key drivers behind this livelihood. This report summarizes the findings from the census, reveals relationships in the data that are not immediately apparent, and identifies potential leverage points for ongoing campaign efforts.

Neuroblastoma is a rare cancer of the sympathetic nervous system. A neuroblastoma tumor develops in the nerve tissue and is diagnosed in infants and children.1 Approximately 10.2 per million children under the age of 15 are affected in the United States and is slightly more common in boys.1,2 Neuroblastoma constitutes 6% of all childhood cancers and has a long-term survival rate of only 15%.2-4 There are approximately 700 new cases of neuroblastoma each year in the United States. With such a low rate of survival, the development of more effective treatment methods is necessary. A number of therapies are available …
Integrating Domain Knowledge To Improve Signal Detection From Electronic Health Records For Pharmacovigilance, Ning Shang
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The intent of this dissertation is to make a contribution to the field of pharmacovigilance. Pharmacovigilance, also known as post-marketing drug surveillance, is the process of continued monitoring for adverse drug reactions (ADRs) after drugs are released into the market. An ADR is a harmful or unpleasant reaction related to the use of a medical product. ADRs were reported to be between the fourth and sixth leading cause of death in the United States in 1994, accounting for 3-7% of medical hospital admissions. On account of the practice of pharmacovigilance, Vioxx (Rofecoxib) and Avandia (Rosiglitazone) are examples of high profile …
A Bio-Political Perspective On Intersexuality And Disability In Discourses Of Law, Arpita Das
A Bio-Political Perspective On Intersexuality And Disability In Discourses Of Law, Arpita Das
Socio-Legal Review
Procedures and apparatuses of governmentality function by means of labelling certain people as 'normal' while rendering others of little value. This can be understood from the bio-political framework propounded by Foucault (1990, 2003). The rationale offered is often accorded not only to the idea of catering to the population' but also gearing towards creating a nation-state of healthy, non-disabled people capable of contributing effectively to the nations' worth. The paper looks at the manner in which inter-sex people who do not fit in within the linear logic of the sex binary, get signified within these normalisation processes and are constructed …

Abolishing Exclusive Jurisdiction In The Federal Circuit: A Response To Judge Wood, Rochelle C. Dreyfus
Abolishing Exclusive Jurisdiction In The Federal Circuit: A Response To Judge Wood, Rochelle C. Dreyfus
Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property
Part of a symposium of responses to Chief Judge Wood’s suggestion for giving regional circuits a share of the Federal Circuit’s authority over patent law, this article argues that now that a degree of nationwide uniformity in patent law has been achieved, it would be a pity to disrupt it. While Chief Judge Wood is right that the law would improve with percolation, a change in the composition of the court, new procedures for challenging patents in the Patent and Trademark Office, a District Court pilot program, and satellite patent offices will bring to the debate new voices, different kinds …

Gram positive (G(+)) infections make up similar to 50% of all acute lung injury cases which are characterized by extensive permeability edema secondary to disruption of endothelial cell (EC) barrier integrity. A primary cause of increased permeability are cholesterol-dependent cytolysins (CDCs) of G(+)-bacteria, such as pneumolysin (PLY) and listeriolysin-O (LLO) which create plasma membrane pores, promoting Ca2+-influx and activation of PKC alpha. In human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HLMVEC), pretreatment with the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, ETU reduced the ability of LLO to increase microvascular cell permeability suggesting an endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)-dependent mechanism. LLO stimulated superoxide production …

Johne's disease is caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), which results in serious economic losses worldwide in farmed livestock such as cattle, sheep, and goats. To control this disease, an effective vaccine with minimal adverse effects is needed. In order to identify a live vaccine for Johne's disease, we evaluated eight attenuated mutant strains of MAP using a C57BL/6 mouse model. The persistaence of the vaccine candidates was measured at 6, 12, and 18 weeks post vaccination. Only strains 320, 321, and 329 colonized both the liver and spleens up until the 12-week time point. The remaining five mutants …

Building A Sustainable Life Science Information Literacy Program Using The Train-The-Trainer Model, Patricia J. Hartman, Renae Newhouse, Valerie E. Perry
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
The train-the-trainer model has great potential for expanding information literacy programs without placing undue burden on already overextended librarians; it is surprisingly underused in academic libraries. At the University of Kentucky, we employed this model to create a new information literacy program in an introductory biology lab. We trained biology teaching assistants (TAs), each of whom was responsible for teaching two lab sections, to teach scientific database searching and Endnote Online to undergraduates. Over the first two semesters, we taught or co-taught 78 sessions of BIO 155 (nearly 2,200 attendees), with the librarian only in attendance at TA training and …

India's Gestational Surrogacy Market: An Exploitation Of Poor, Uneducated Women, Kristine Schanbacher
India's Gestational Surrogacy Market: An Exploitation Of Poor, Uneducated Women, Kristine Schanbacher
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
The commodification of women is most often associated with the notorious practices of sex trafficking and prostitution. However, in this article, the author examines this historic and global problem through a different lens: the use of women in India as gestational surrogates. The article explains how wealthy Americans have more access to India's gestational surrogacy market than ever before, and how the advent of new technology- such as in vitro fertilization- has also removed practical barriers. Many poor women in India have little opportunity for education or career advancement, and thus become surrogates as a method of survival. The author …

Ice, Ice, Baby! The Division Of Frozen Embryos At The Time Of Divorce, Meagan R. Marold
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
In the last few decades, advances in science have allowed many women to overcome issues of infertility and have provided a safeguard for women delaying childrearing while they focus on education and professional careers. Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) have given an answer to couples who, for one reason or another, could not conceive. However, ART has also brought about numerous legal issues, the most pressing of which is the disposition of embryos at the time of divorce. This article seeks to explore this emerging issue and address the ways in which state legislatures and courts have dealt with the issue …
Evaluating The Utility Of Natural History Collections In Research And For The Public, Bethany L. Abrahamson
Evaluating The Utility Of Natural History Collections In Research And For The Public, Bethany L. Abrahamson
Biology ETDs
Natural history collections (NHCs) are useful in many fields of study, but knowledge about how they are used in the modern day is poor. The first part of this study, focused on the collections data held by the Museum of Southwestern Biology (MSB), analyzes specimen-based publications, specimen loan records, and guestbook information to determine how NHCs have been used in scientific study over time. Using a novel methodology, I objectively sorted the publications into ten research subjects via particular phrases found in publication titles, places of publication, and keywords. I observed from this dataset the proportions of particular subjects for …

Diversification And Adaptation In The Andes: Insights From Phylogeography, Malaria, And Hemoglobin Of The House Wren (Troglodytes Aedon), Spencer C. Galen
Biology ETDs
The tropical Andes of South America represent a highly complex landscape characterized by physical barriers to dispersal and stark ecological gradients. The study of intraspecific genetic diversity in widespread Andean species has the potential to elucidate the historical biogeographic events that have driven diversification as well as the processes by which organisms have adapted to their environments in this region. The house wren (Troglodytes aedon) provides a convenient system for the study diversification and adaptation in the Andes, as it is distributed widely across both biogeographic barriers and heterogeneous environments. In chapter one, I utilize house wren and malaria parasite …
