From FDR to the World Wide Web, a sampling of pivotal events and people of the past 100 years as viewed by Colby faculty

Never in the history of humankind has so much happened in so short a time. We began the 20th century as technological infants, having just begun to move beyond the agrarian economies that shaped societies for thousands of years. The distance covered over the next 10 decades was breathtaking.

Scientists revealed mysteries of our universe both large (the cosmos) and small (genetic codes and subatomic physics); engineers gave us grand new inventions that changed our lives …

Just before Thanksgiving Day last November, Kent Wommack '77 got the classic good-news, bad-news, worse-news call. Wommack is head of The Nature Conservancy in Maine, and the caller was a timberland manager who had asked Wommack to back a client in acquiring prime acres of Maine forest on the upper St. John River, one of the most unspoiled waterways left in the United States. The good news was that the owner had agreed to sell the breathtaking chunk of land in the first place. The bad news was that the client was no longer interested in the deal. The worse …

On a balmy August morning in 1996, Frank Favaloro '96 was preparing for one of those days that marks a turning point in any student's life. With a Ryder van parked in front of his parents' Norfolk, Mass., home, he was ready to embark on a new academic adventure at the University of Pennsylvania.

But then something went wrong. While attempting to lower a futon mattress from his attic, Favaloro lost his balance, fell down a flight of stairs and lost consciousness. After that fateful day in August, Favaloro's future would be forever altered.

Caspase-Dependent Signaling Underlies Glioblastoma Cell Death In Response To The Fungal Metabolite, Fusarochromanone, Elahe Mahdavian, Monique Marshall, Patrick M. Martin, Patrice Cagle, Brian A. Salvatore, Quincy A. Quick

Biology Faculty Research

Fungal metabolites continue to show promise as a viable class of anticancer agents. In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of the fungal metabolite, fusarochromanone (FC101), for its antitumor activities in glioblastomas, which have a median survival of less than two years and a poor clinical response to surgical resection, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Using clinically applicable doses, we demonstrated that FC101 induced glioblastoma apoptotic cell death via caspase dependent signaling, as indicated by the cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, glioblastoma (PARP). FC101 also induced differential reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in glioblastoma cells, contrasting a defined role of oxidative …

Secondary Teachers' Perceived Role In Suicide Prevention And Intervening With Suicidal Students, Victoria R. Hatton Jul 2014

Secondary Teachers' Perceived Role In Suicide Prevention And Intervening With Suicidal Students, Victoria R. Hatton

Theses and Dissertations

Best practices in adolescent suicide prevention include teachers as major participants, because teachers are in a unique and frontline position to support students. Unfortunately, many teachers are unaware of their role in suicide prevention efforts. In addition to confusion about their roles, teachers may feel uncomfortable and/or lack confidence in their abilities to identify warning signs and intervene with suicidal students. This study assessed secondary teachers' (N = 74) perceptions of their role in suicide prevention as well as how they perceive their comfort and confidence levels in identifying and intervening with suicidal students. In addition, this study explored possible …

The Influence Of Cumulative Risk Factors On The Cognitive Abilities Of Low-Income, African- American Preschool Children, Cassandra L. Esposito Jul 2014

The Influence Of Cumulative Risk Factors On The Cognitive Abilities Of Low-Income, African- American Preschool Children, Cassandra L. Esposito

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A large number of children are exposed to multiple risk factors within the first 3 years of life, resulting in poorer child developmental outcomes. Additionally, exposure to multiple risks is especially prevalent in low-income populations. Several studies have found that multiple maternal and biological risks such as maternal depression, physical health or illness, other sociodemographic risks, and low birth weight lead to poor child outcomes, such as lower cognitive achievement at preschool age. The current study investigated the influence of both maternal and infant biological risks in a cumulative risk model on predicting preschool children’s cognitive outcomes. Hierarchical multiple regression …

Comparison Of Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Compatible Optical Detectors For In-Magnet Tissue Spectroscopy: Photodiodes Versus Silicon Photomultipliers, Fadi El-Ghussein, Shudong Jiang, Brian W. Pogue, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue Jul 2014

Comparison Of Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Compatible Optical Detectors For In-Magnet Tissue Spectroscopy: Photodiodes Versus Silicon Photomultipliers, Fadi El-Ghussein, Shudong Jiang, Brian W. Pogue, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

Tissue spectroscopy inside the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system adds a significant value by measuring fast vascular hemoglobin responses or completing spectroscopic identification of diagnostically relevant molecules. Advances in this type of spectroscopy instrumentation have largely focused on fiber coupling into and out of the MRI; however, nonmagnetic detectors can now be placed inside the scanner with signal amplification performed remotely to the high field environment for optimized light detection. In this study, the two possible detector options, such as silicon photodiodes (PD) and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM), were systematically examined for dynamic range and wavelength performance. Results show that PDs …

There Is An App For That: Uses Of Print And Digital Materials In The Lives Of Three Preschoolers, Rebecca Hickman Mccraw

Theses and Dissertations

This ethnographic study examined the uses of print and digital materials in the lives of three preschoolers over a five-month period of time in the children’s home and community contexts in the southeast region of the United States. The research question asked: What can I learn about the literacy practices of three preschoolers as they use print and digital materials in their worlds? The children were the primary focus of the research, but adults (specifically, the children’s mothers) also served as informants. Grounded in sociocultural theory and informed by constructivist and media theories, the study is important because, while we …

Increasing Maternal Or Post-Weaning Folic Acid Alters Gene Expression And Moderately Changes Behavior In The Offspring, Subit Barua, Kathryn K. Chadman, Salomon Kuizon, Diego Buenaventura, Nathan W. Stapley, Felicia Ruocco, Umme Begum, Sara R. Guariglia, W. Ted Brown, Mohamad Junaid

Publications and Research

Background: Studies have indicated that altered maternal micronutrients and vitamins influence the development of newborns and altered nutrient exposure throughout the lifetime may have potential health effects and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases. In recent years, folic acid (FA) exposure has significantly increased as a result of mandatory FA fortification and supplementation during pregnancy. Since FA modulates DNA methylation and affects gene expression, we investigated whether the amount of FA ingested during gestation alters gene expression in the newborn cerebral hemisphere, and if the increased exposure to FA during gestation and throughout the lifetime alters behavior in C57BL/6J mice.

Interpolating Beach Profile Data Using Linear And Non-Linear Functions, Lance Calloway Croft Jul 2014

Interpolating Beach Profile Data Using Linear And Non-Linear Functions, Lance Calloway Croft

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Beach and nearshore surveys are conducted in a variety of ways, the most commonly used being the level-and-transit method; because it is inexpensive, time conducive and highly accurate. Specifically, beach surveys are conducted to better understand cross-shore, long-shore sediment transport processes, as well as to quantify volume changes, which are used to evaluate beach performance. In this study, a section of the beach on Sand Key, FL was surveyed using rod-and-transit. In addition to the commonly used linear data analysis, a non-linear analysis was conducted using NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines).

Survey data was collected within a short time window …
