The Effects Of Community Support On Posttraumatic Growth Outcomes For Parents Of Children With Chronic Illness, Colleen Gannon
The Effects Of Community Support On Posttraumatic Growth Outcomes For Parents Of Children With Chronic Illness, Colleen Gannon
Theses and Dissertations
Parents of children with chronic illnesses face many stressors on multiple fronts as a result of their child's care needs. Posttraumatic growth is positive psychological outcomes of stress for those who have experienced a traumatic event, such as the diagnosis of a child with a chronic illness. While much is known about the challenges of caring for a child with a chronic condition, there is little research on these parent's growth outcomes. Of the research that does exist, much focuses on internal predictors of posttraumatic growth, such as personality characteristics. The purpose of this study is to begin to investigate …

Whereas a large and growing scholarly literature is dedicated to studying human populations in the city, not much has been written about nonhuman animals in this space. This essay explores the presence of nonhuman animals in the American city through a legal lens. I begin with a few general contemplations about the legal classification of animals in American cities, and then move to explore specific legal classifications of animals in cities: domestic and companion animals, agriculture or livestock animals, wild animals, …
The Design, Construction, And Experimental Characterization Of Spatial Parallel Architectures Of Elastofluidic Systems, Jordan Anthony Rivera
The Design, Construction, And Experimental Characterization Of Spatial Parallel Architectures Of Elastofluidic Systems, Jordan Anthony Rivera
Master’s Theses
Creating organic, life like motion has historically been extremely difficult and costly for general applications. Traditional structures and robots use rigid components with discrete joints to produce desired motions but are limited in freedom by the range of motion each additional component allows. In a traditionally rigid robot complex motion is obtained through the addition of joints and links. These additions add complexity to a rigid robot but improve its ability to create motion. Soft robotics aims to overcome the limitations of traditional robotics by creating integrated actuation and structure which more closely imitates organic movement. Often the most effective …

We present a microfluidic approach that allows simultaneous interrogation of RBC properties in physiological flow conditions at a single cell level. With this method, we studied healthy hemoglobin A (HbA) and homozygous sickle hemoglobin (HbS) containing RBCs using whole blood samples from twelve subjects. We report that HbS-containing RBCs are heterogeneous in terms of adhesion and deformability in flow.

Several standard protocols based on repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have been employed for treatment of a variety of neurological disorders. Despite their advantages in patients that are retractable to medication, there is a lack of knowledge about the effects of rTMS on the autonomic nervous system that controls the cardiovascular system. Current understanding suggests that the shape of the so-called QRS complex together with the size of the different segments and intervals between the PQRST deflections of the heart could predict the nature of the different arrhythmias and ailments affecting the heart. This preliminary study involving 10 normal subjects …

Emotion Regulation And Experiential Avoidance Overlap In Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Melissa Nicole Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study aimed to elucidate the independent and synergistic effects of emotion regulation (ER) defecits and experiential avoidance (EA) in the context of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We addressed these questions in a sample of trauma-exposed college students. Using a sample of 620 college students (75.6% female, 48.9% Caucasian, 39.2% African American), all participants were trauma-exposed, in accordance with criterion A for PTSD in the DSM-5. 163 (26.3%) participants screened positive for PTSD. In correlational analyses, EA, ER, and PTSD showed largely strong, positive relations to each other. Moderation analyses showed that ER difficulties were predictive of PTSD severity only …
Spatial Analysis In Cancer Surveillance, Recinda Loraine Sherman
Spatial Analysis In Cancer Surveillance, Recinda Loraine Sherman
Open Access Dissertations
The burden of cancer is a significant physical, psychological, and financial toll on individuals and populations. Cancer is more common in older populations, so advances in other areas of medicine will inevitably increase the numbers of cancer patients. The development of cancer is prolonged over years which makes it difficult to identify etiologic causes. And the treatment of the disease can also be quite protracted. In the case of advanced or aggressive disease, medical treatment is sometimes reduced to a series of clinical interventions that do little to change the timeline to mortality. Currently, our most effective tool in cancer …

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a method of non-invasive brain stimulation that has been frequently used in experimental and clinical pain studies. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying tDCS-mediated pain control, and most important its placebo component, are not completely established. In this pilot study, we investigated in vivo the involvement of the endogenous μ-opioid system in the global tDCS-analgesia experience. Nine healthy volunteers went through positron emission tomography (PET) scans with [11C]carfentanil, a selective μ-opioid receptor (MOR) radiotracer, to measure the central MOR activity during tDCS in vivo (non-displaceable binding potential, BPND) - one of the main analgesic mechanisms …

The chemical reaction network (CRN) is a widely used formalism to describe macroscopic behavior of chemical systems. Available tools for CRN modelling and simulation require local access, installation, and often involve local file storage, which is susceptible to loss, lacks searchable structure, and does not support concurrency. Furthermore, simulations are often single-threaded, and user interfaces are non-trivial to use. Therefore there are significant hurdles to conducting efficient and collaborative chemical research. In this paper, we introduce a new enterprise chemistry simulation framework, COEL, which addresses these issues. COEL is the first web-based framework of its kind. A visually pleasing and …
Chemistry And Thermochemistry Of Selected Fatty Acids Using Correlation Gas Chromatography, Joe A. Wilson
Chemistry And Thermochemistry Of Selected Fatty Acids Using Correlation Gas Chromatography, Joe A. Wilson
Dissertations
Correlation gas chromatography (c-GC) is a special application of the gas chromatography technique and is used for the evaluation of both vaporization enthalpy and vapor pressures of organic compounds. Its use in measuring vaporization enthalpies has been extensively documented. This method is useful for measurements of both liquids and solids. For substances that are solids, since each analyte is dilutely adsorbed on the condensed phase of the gas chromatographic column, it is not crystalline. The vapor pressure that it exhibits behaves as an excellent model of the sub-cooled liquid as demonstrated by various thermochemical cycles. Thermochemical measurements are important to …

We demonstrate a novel artificial optical material, the "photonic hyper-crystal'', which combines the most interesting features of hyperbolic metamaterials and photonic crystals. Similar to hyperbolic metamaterials, photonic hyper-crystals exhibit broadband divergence in their photonic density of states due to the lack of usual diffraction limit on the photon wave vector. On the other hand, similar to photonic crystals, hyperbolic dispersion law of extraordinary photons is modulated by forbidden gaps near the boundaries of photonic Brillouin zones. Three dimensional self-assembly of photonic hyper-crystals has been achieved by application of external magnetic field to a cobalt nanoparticle-based ferrofluid. Unique spectral properties of …

Evidence that brain edema and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels have roles in experimental binge ethanol-induced neurodegeneration has stimulated interest in swelling/edema-linked neuroinflammatory pathways leading to oxidative stress. We report here that neurotoxic binge ethanol exposure produces comparable significant effects in vivo and in vitro on adult rat brain levels of AQP4 as well as neuroinflammation-linked enzymes: key phospholipase A2 (PLA2) family members and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1). In adult male rats, repetitive ethanol intoxication (3 gavages/d for 4 d, ∼ 9 g/kg/d, achieving blood ethanol levels ∼ 375 mg/dl; "Majchrowicz" model) significantly increased AQP4, Ca+2-dependent PLA2 GIVA (cPLA2), phospho-cPLA2 GIVA …

Many microbes live in a mutualistic relationship with the human body, make up the human microbiome, and play a role in our health by modulating the immune system. Man is “covered” inside and outside his body with millions of microbes to maintain normal bodily functions and sustain life in our changing world. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and is colonized by millions of microbes. This external colonization of the integumentary system is termed our skin microbiome. Man cannot see it (except with a microscope), but we need it for normal functioning, certainly in a pathogenic …

The channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) is susceptible to bacterial and viral infections acqired from its pond environment. The innate immune proteins mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and lysozyme were studied in two different groups of channel catfish aged 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months-old. The two groups were maintained at a mean temperature of 270C and were one-year apart in their bleedings. Dot-blot enzyme linked immunosorbent assay for MBL and turbidometry lysozyme quantitive assays were done to determine the two innate immune proteins. The greatest increases in mean MBL and mean lysozyme concentrations were seen at 4 months. Two month-old catfish …

Relationship Between Membrane Efficiency And Solute Diffusion Through A Dense, Prehydrated Geosynthetic Clay Liner, Akmal Shukhratovich Daniyarov
Master’s Theses
Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) are manufactured flat sheets composed of a layer of bentonite sandwiched between two geotextiles. GCLs are used as containment material in environmental and hydraulic applications (Koerner 1998). Previous studies have shown that hydraulic conductivity and diffusion coefficient of bentonite tend to increase when in contact with chemical solutions, making this material less efficient. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the membrane efficiency coefficient and effective salt-diffusion coefficient of a dense, prehydrated geosynthetic clay liner (DPH-GCL) in the presence of monovalent salt (KCl) solutions. It was also aimed to compare the DPH-GCLs …

Blood microRNA (miRNA) levels have been associated with and shown to participate in disease pathophysiology. However, the hematopoietic cell of origin of blood miRNAs and the individual blood cell miRNA profiles are poorly understood. We report the miRNA content of highly purified normal hematopoietic cells from the same individuals. Although T-cells, B-cells and granulocytes had the highest miRNA content per cell, erythrocytes contributed more cellular miRNA to the blood, followed by granulocytes and platelets. miRNA profiling revealed different patterns and different expression levels of miRNA specific for each lineage. miR-30c-5p was determined to be an appropriate reference normalizer for cross-cell …

The present paper is a review of several papers from the Proceedings of the Joint European Thermodynamics Conference, held in Brescia, Italy, 1–5 July 2013, namely papers introduced by their authors at Panel I of the conference. Panel I was devoted to applications of the Second Law of Thermodynamics to social issues—economics, ecology, sustainability, and energy policy. The concept called Available Energy which goes back to mid-nineteenth century work of Kelvin, Rankine, Maxwell and Gibbs, is relevant to all of the papers. Various names have been applied to the concept when interactions between the system of interest and an environment …
Investigating The Effect Of Increasing Positive Teacher-Student Interactions On Adolescent Behavior And Teacher-Student Relationships, Jennifer J. Gallucci
Investigating The Effect Of Increasing Positive Teacher-Student Interactions On Adolescent Behavior And Teacher-Student Relationships, Jennifer J. Gallucci
Doctoral Dissertations
Research suggests that positive interactions between teachers and students are linked to a myriad of positive academic and behavioral student outcomes (Connor, Son, Hindman, & Morrison, 2005; Curby, Rimm-Kaufman, & Ponitz, 2009; Mashburn et al., 2008; Merritt, Wanless, Rimm-Kaufman, Comeron & Peugh, 2012). However, interactions between teachers and students with learning or behavioral difficulties are often characterized by fewer positive interactions (Cook & Cameron, 2008). Available interventions to increase positivity between teachers and students reveal major limitations. To address this issue, feasible and effective interventions to increase positive interactions between teachers and students are needed. As such, the objective of …

The last decade has ushered in an era of high dimensional, high volume data. In particular with the biotechnological revolution of the era, high-dimensional genomic studies of various designs have provided investigators with the tools to study thousands or even millions of genomic features simultaneously. These studies have shed new light on the underlying mechanisms of complex diseases. The accumulated knowledge of these complex relationships between genes has led scientists to formalize pathways and graphical networks that visually and succinctly give descriptions of the geometry of these relationships. With such knowledge, it has become possible to develop procedures for statistical …

An Integrated Approach To Understanding The Structure And Function Of The Large-Conductance, Voltage- And Calcium-Activated Potassium Channel, Jacob E. Mcmillan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The large-conductance, voltage- and calcium-activated potassium channel (BKCa channel) is an important transmembrane ion channel involved in many physiological and pathophysiological processes. However, little is known about its atomic-level three-dimensional structure. The functional channel requires four alpha subunits assembled as a potassium pore and is typically associated with four beta subunits that regulate function in various ways depending on the isoform of the beta subunit is interacting with the channel. Currently, the only major high-resolution atomic structure available is of the cytosolic tail domain of the alpha subunit. In the absence of structural information, electrophysiology has allowed for extensive characterization …
