Long Bay Hypoxia Monitoring Consortium, Susan Libes, Michael Trapp, Scott Kindelberger, Danielle Doremus
Long Bay Hypoxia Monitoring Consortium, Susan Libes, Michael Trapp, Scott Kindelberger, Danielle Doremus
Journal of South Carolina Water Resources
In October 2011, the coastal municipalities of North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Surfside, and Horry County signed a resolution, under the aegis of their Coastal Alliance of mayors, to develop and implement the Long Bay Hypoxia Monitoring Consortium. The goal of this consortium is to support monitoring and studies that further characterize hypoxia and its causes in Long Bay. The baseline data will enable assessments of water quality management efforts. Monitoring stations are to be maintained at three piers, Cherry Grove (NMB), Apache (Horry County), and Second Ave N. Pier (Myrtle Beach). Turbidity and chlorophyll sensors will be deployed at …

Green Infrastructure In Coastal Landscapes: Ecological Design, Hydrological Function, And Sustainable Land Use Guidance, Daniel R. Hitchcock, Anand D. Jayakaran, David L. White
Journal of South Carolina Water Resources
Coastal landscape modification, specifically the conversion of forests to residential and commercial development, coupled with potential climate change impacts, could lead to irretrievable natural resource impairment. An assessment of existing resources (green infrastructure) and their benefits via ecosystem services provides useful guidance for resource protection to enhance community resilience. These landscape elements are complex within and between varying scales; therefore stakeholders need clear, relevant, comparable, and easily accessible information for effective decision-making.

Low back pain causes distress and suffering to patients. The impact of low back pain creates a major socio-economic burden in industrialized societies as well. As the leading cause of disability, low back pain affects more than 80% of the US population at some point in life. Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration has been closely associated with low back pain, stimulating interest in finding the causes that lead to IVD degeneration. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms involved in the maintenance of IVD composition may shed light to development of novel therapies for IVD degeneration and low back pain. IVD cells are responsible …
Identification Of Genetic Determinants Of Aging Traits, James Edwin Hicks Jr
Identification Of Genetic Determinants Of Aging Traits, James Edwin Hicks Jr
Open Access Dissertations
As the population in developed countries ages, the health problems associated with aging will become an increasingly important public health concern. While aging is a complex process that takes place over multiple physiological systems, many aspects of aging are under some amount of genetic control. Identification of the loci underpinning these traits could allow for targeting interventions for the most at-risk individuals in old age, improving both lifespan and quality of life. The Amish represent a uniquely appropriate population for the genetic analysis of aging traits. They live a homogenous lifestyle, with high levels of physical activity throughout their lives. …

Efforts to conserve globally declining herbivorous green sea turtles have resulted in promising growth of some populations. These trends could significantly impact critical ecosystem services provided by seagrass meadows on which turtles feed. Expanding turtle populations could improve seagrass ecosystem health by removing seagrass biomass and preventing of the formation of sediment anoxia. However, overfishing of large sharks, the primary green turtle predators, could facilitate turtle populations growing beyond historical sizes and trigger detrimental ecosystem impacts mirroring those on land when top predators were extirpated. Experimental data from multiple ocean basins suggest that increasing turtle populations can negatively impact seagrasses, …

Vision 2020: An Analysis Of Policy Implementation And Agrarian Change In Rural Rwanda, Sterling Recker
Dissertations
In 2000, President Paul Kagame introduced a plan to alleviate poverty as well as to maintain political control over the policy process through a decentralized bureaucracy. Since adoption of Vision 2020 in 2000, Rwanda has been reforming its rural sector to commercialize agriculture, reduce pressures on land, and move the country into middle income status by the year 2020. In order to achieve the goals outlined in Vision 2020, the Government of Rwanda (GoR) adopted a policy of administrative decentralization in 2001 to facilitate the transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture. I am addressing two related questions: 1) How has …

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology
BACKGROUND: The genetics involved in Ewing sarcoma susceptibility and prognosis are poorly understood. EWS/FLI and related EWS/ETS chimeras upregulate numerous gene targets via promoter-based GGAA-microsatellite response elements. These microsatellites are highly polymorphic in humans, and preliminary evidence suggests EWS/FLI-mediated gene expression is highly dependent on the number of GGAA motifs within the microsatellite.
OBJECTIVES: Here we sought to examine the polymorphic spectrum of a GGAA-microsatellite within the NR0B1 promoter (a critical EWS/FLI target) in primary Ewing sarcoma tumors, and characterize how this polymorphism influences gene expression and clinical outcomes.
RESULTS: A complex, bimodal pattern of EWS/FLI-mediated gene expression was observed …

© 2014 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved. Despite tremendous successes of GPCR crystallography, the receptors with available structures represent only a small fraction of human GPCRs. An important role of the modeling community is to maximize structural insights for the remaining receptors and complexes. The community-wide GPCR Dock assessment was established to stimulate and monitor the progress in molecular modeling and ligand docking for GPCRs. The four targets in the present third assessment round presented new and diverse challenges for modelers, including prediction of allosteric ligand interaction and activation states in 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors 1B and 2B, and modeling by extremely …

Averitable explosion of primary research papers within the past 10 years focuses on nucleolar and ribosomal stress, and for good reason: with ribosome biosynthesis consuming ∼80% of a cell’s energy, nearly all metabolic and signaling pathways lead ultimately to or from the nucleolus. We begin by describing p53 activation upon nucleolar stress resulting in cell cycle arrest or apoptosis. The significance of this mechanism cannot be understated, as oncologists are now inducing nucleolar stress strategically in cancer cells as a potential anti-cancer therapy. We also summarize the human ribosomopathies, syndromes in which ribosome biogenesis or function are impaired leading to …

Microbial Cell And Particle Selection System And Method Of Use, Ryan Toomey, Peter George Stroot
USF Patents
The invention comprises two key components: dielectrophoresis (DEP) and reversible binding surfaces. DEP has become an important tool for trapping dielectric particles. Moreover, DEP can manipulate cell movement as dictated by the intrinsic dielectric constant of the cell without modification. DEP therefore provides a mechanism by which to force targets in a flow channel to a reversible binding surface. By building selectivity into the binding surface, the capacity to choose which targets can be held after the dielectric field is turned off, providing a separation strategy that does not suffer from fouling issues, as large foulants can freely pass over …

Mass mortality events (MMEs) are rapidly occurring catastrophic demographic events that punctuate background mortality levels. Individual MMEs are staggering in their observed magnitude: re- moving more than 90% of a population, resulting in the death of more than a billion individuals, or producing 700 million tons of dead biomass in a single event. Despite extensive documentation of individual MMEs, we have no understanding of the major features characterizing the occurrence and magnitude of MMEs, their causes, or trends through time. Thus, no framework exists for contextualizing MMEs in the wake of ongoing global and regional perturbations to natural systems. Here …

Plasma membranes are essential to both the structure and function of mammalian cells. The first unifying paradigm of membrane structure, the Fluid Mosaic Model, is no longer considered adequate to describe the many non-homogeneous lipid structures that have been observed in both natural and model membranes over the past approximately thirty years. The field of membrane biophysics now appreciates that the complex mixture of different lipid species found in natural membranes produces a range of dynamic, laterally segregated, non-homogeneous structures which exist on time scales ranging from microseconds to minutes.
