Gaze And Posture Coordinate Differently With The Complexity Of Visual Stimulus Motion, Joshua L. Haworth, Srikant Vallabhajosula, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

In this study, we explored whether gaze and posture would exhibit coordination with the motion of a presented visual stimulus, specifically with regard to the complexity of the motion structure. Fourteen healthy adults viewed a set of four visual stimulus motion conditions, in both self-selected and semi-tandem stance, during which the stimulus moved horizontally across a screen, with position updated to follow a sine, chaos, surrogate, or random noise trajectory. Posture was measured using a standard force platform in self-selected and semi-tandem stance conditions while gaze was recorded using image-based eye-tracking equipment. Cross-correlation confirmed the continuous coordination of gaze with …

Systematics Of The Neotropical Genus Leptodactylus Fitzinger, 1826 (Anura: Leptodactylidae): Phylogeny, The Relevance Of Non-Molecular Evidence, And Species Accounts, Rafael O. De Sá, Taran Grant, Arley Camargo, W. R. Heyer, María Laura Ponssa, Edward Stanley Sep 2014

Biology Faculty Publications

A phylogeny of the species-rich clade of the Neotropical frog genus Leptodactylus sensu stricto is presented on the basis of a total evidence analysis of molecular (mitochondrial and nuclear markers) and non-molecular (adult and larval morphological and behavioral characters) sampled from > 80% of the 75 currently recognized species. Our results support the monophyly of Leptodactylus sensu stricto, with Hydrolaetare placed as its sister group. The reciprocal monophyly of Hydrolaetare and Leptodactylus sensu stricto does not require that we consider Hydrolaetare as either a subgenus or synonym of Leptodactylus sensu lato. We recognize Leptodactylus sensu stricto, Hydrolaetare, Adenomera, and Lithodytes …

A Threat To New Zealand's Tuatara Heats Up, Kristine L. Grayson, Nicola J. Mitchell, Nicola J. Nelson

Biology Faculty Publications

No matter how many times we head to one of New Zealand's offshore islands, the feelings are always a mix of sheer awe at the beauty and biodiversity preserved in these special refuges and lingering nerves. Did we remember all the gear? Do we have enough food and water in case we get stuck? Can the helicopter land on the side of a cliff in these winds? These epic journeys are in pursuit of a lone remnant of the reptile evolutionary tree, with a unique ecology that has big implications under climate change.

Background: Nonhuman primates are important for both biomedical studies and understanding human evolution. Although research in these areas has mostly focused on Old World primates, such as the rhesus macaque, the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a New World primate, offers important advantages in comparison to other primates, such as an accelerated lifespan. To conduct Next Generation expression studies or to study primate evolution, a high quality annotation of the marmoset genome is required. The availability of marmoset transcriptome data from five tissues, including both raw sequences and assembled transcripts, will aid in the annotation of the newly …

Information And Entropy Theory For The Sustainability Of Coupled Human And Natural Systems, Audrey L. Mayer, Richard P. Donovan, Christopher W. Pawlowski Sep 2014

Information And Entropy Theory For The Sustainability Of Coupled Human And Natural Systems, Audrey L. Mayer, Richard P. Donovan, Christopher W. Pawlowski

College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications

For coupled human and natural systems (CHANS), sustainability can be defined operationally as a feasible, desirable set of flows (material, currency, information, energy, individuals, etc.) that can be maintained despite internal changes and changes in the environment. Sustainable development can be defined as the process by which CHANS can be moved toward sustainability. Specific indicators that give insight into the structure and behavior of feedbacks in CHANS are of particular interest because they would aid in the sustainable management of these systems through an understanding of the structures that govern system behavior. However, the use of specific feedbacks as monitoring …

Morphing: The Linkage Between Inward Private Equity And Outward Venture, Sunny Li Sun, Hao Liang Sep 2014

Morphing: The Linkage Between Inward Private Equity And Outward Venture, Sunny Li Sun, Hao Liang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Private equity is impacting global economies and competitive landscapes of multinational enterprises (MNEs). In this pioneer research, we first find an important new pattern of globally interfirm connections: the inward private equity investment likes to promote Chinese firms’ outward venture, or an inward-outward linkage. Under this inward-outward linkage, after received investment from private equity, Chinese emerging MNEs are likely to restructure board, rebuild the top management team, reconfiguring resource, reframe the industry structure and alter competitive dynamics, thus, modify their strategies in outward ventures, such as accelerating the internationalization speed, locating more outward ventures in developed economies, and engaging complex …

Experiments On Tracer Diffusion In Aqueous And Non-Aqueous Solvent Combinations, Duncan M. Frasch, Daniel Spiegel Sep 2014

Experiments On Tracer Diffusion In Aqueous And Non-Aqueous Solvent Combinations, Duncan M. Frasch, Daniel Spiegel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

Forced Rayleigh scattering is used to study the tracer diffusion of an azobenzene in binary combinations of polar solvents, including water. In the absence of water, the tracer diffusion coefficient D in the mixture lies between the diffusion coefficients within the pure solvents, on a curve that is reasonably close to the prediction of free-volume theory. If water is present, on the other hand, the diffusion coefficient displays a minimum that is less than the smaller of the two pure-solvent values. We attempt to understand the different behavior in water by concentrating on the fairly hydrophobic nature of the solute, …

Influence Of The Bdnf Genotype On Amygdalo-Prefrontal White Matter Microstructure Is Linked To Nonconscious Attention Bias To Threat, Joshua M. Carlson, Jiook Cha, Eddie Harmon-Jones, Lilianne R. Mujica-Parodi, Greg Hajcak Sep 2014

Influence Of The Bdnf Genotype On Amygdalo-Prefrontal White Matter Microstructure Is Linked To Nonconscious Attention Bias To Threat, Joshua M. Carlson, Jiook Cha, Eddie Harmon-Jones, Lilianne R. Mujica-Parodi, Greg Hajcak

Journal Articles

Cognitive processing biases, such as increased attention to threat, are gaining recognition as causal factors in anxiety. Yet, little is known about the anatomical pathway by which threat biases cognition and how genetic factors might influence the integrity of this pathway, and thus, behavior. For 40 normative adults, we reconstructed the entire amygdalo-prefrontal white matter tract (uncinate fasciculus) using diffusion tensor weighted MRI and probabilistic tractography to test the hypothesis that greater fiber integrity correlates with greater nonconscious attention bias to threat as measured by a backward masked dot-probe task. We used path analysis to investigate the relationship between brain-derived …

Solenopsis Invicta Virus (Sinv-1) Infection And Insecticide Interactions In The Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), Danielle M. Tufts, Wayne B. Hunter, Blake Bextine

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Controlling invasive species is a growing concern; however, pesticides can be detrimental for non-target organisms. The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren; Hymenoptera: Formicidae) has aggressively invaded ~138 million ha in the USA and causes over $6 billion in damage and control efforts annually (Valles 2011). Myriad research studies have been conducted to discover safe biological control agents to manage these invasive pests (Valles et al. 2004; Milks et al. 2008; Oi et al. 2009; Yang et al. 2009; Wang et al. 2010; Callcott et al. 2011; Porter et al. 2011; Tufts et al. 2011). Stress-Induced Cocaine Seeking Requires A Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptor-Regulated Pathway From The Ventral Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis That Regulates Crf Actions In The Ventral Tegmental Area, Oliver Vranjkovic, Paul J. Gasser, Clayton H. Gerndt, David A. Baker, John R. Mantsch Sep 2014

Stress-Induced Cocaine Seeking Requires A Beta-2 Adrenergic Receptor-Regulated Pathway From The Ventral Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis That Regulates Crf Actions In The Ventral Tegmental Area, Oliver Vranjkovic, Paul J. Gasser, Clayton H. Gerndt, David A. Baker, John R. Mantsch

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The ventral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (vBNST) has been implicated in stress-induced cocaine use. Here we demonstrate that, in the vBNST, corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is expressed in neurons that innervate the ventral tegmental area (VTA), a site where the CRF receptor antagonist antalarmin prevents the reinstatement of cocaine seeking by a stressor, intermittent footshock, following intravenous self-administration in rats. The vBNST receives dense noradrenergic innervation and expresses β adrenergic receptors (ARs). Footshock-induced reinstatement was prevented by bilateral intra-vBNST injection of the β-2 AR antagonist, ICI-118,551, but not the β-1 AR antagonist, betaxolol. Moreover, bilateral intra-vBNST injection of …

Get Yourself Connected: Time, Space, And Character Networks In David Mitchell's Fiction, Josh Lesser Sep 2014

Get Yourself Connected: Time, Space, And Character Networks In David Mitchell's Fiction, Josh Lesser

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the works of novelist David Mitchell, paying specific attention to the ways in which he uses his narratives to emulate and remediate global networks and contemporary fiction tropes. Though his novels are rarely set in the immediate present, Mitchell's creations are connected in ways that specifically evoke social networks, Internet databases and new media. He has created an insular universe through five novels, and goes out his way to show that every character is a node in a web that spans all five. Characters reappear in novels that are not otherwise related to each other, or reveal …

The Role Of Tight And Adherens Junctions In Cervical Neoplasia, Ciaran Cunniffe Sep 2014

The Role Of Tight And Adherens Junctions In Cervical Neoplasia, Ciaran Cunniffe

Doctoral

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women and is caused by a persistent infection of the cervical epithelium by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Adherens (AJ) and tight junctions (TJ) play a key role in maintaining the apical-basolateral polarity and cohesive structure of epithelial cells. These junctions are maintained by the interaction of several key proteins including, claudins, catenins, cadherins and SNAIL. This study aims to identify the expression profile of several AJ and TJ proteins and to identify and genotype HPV DNA in several cases of cervical neoplasia. This study also aims to investigate the pathogenesis …

Expression Of Prta From Photorhabdus Luminescens In Bacillus Thuringiensis Enhances Mortality In Lepidopteran Larvae By Sub-Cutaneous But Not Oral Infection, Ah Bishop Sep 2014

Expression Of Prta From Photorhabdus Luminescens In Bacillus Thuringiensis Enhances Mortality In Lepidopteran Larvae By Sub-Cutaneous But Not Oral Infection, Ah Bishop

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The prtA gene from Photorhabdus luminescens encodes the virulence factor Protease A. When P. luminescens is injected into the hemocoel of insects by entomopathogenic nematodes, PrtA is a key component of pathogenicity thought to help degrade the immune system. The prtA gene was cloned and introduced on a plasmid into Bacillus thuringiensis. PrtA was shown to be actively expressed in vitro by cleavage of a specific Dabcyl-Edans heptapeptide substrate. There was no difference in the speed or level of mortality when spores and δ-endotoxins crystals of the transformed strain were fed to larvae of Pieris brassicae, as compared to the …

A Review Of The Removal Of Arundo Donax From A Riparian Area Within San Timoteo Canyon, Catherine E. Howe Sep 2014

A Review Of The Removal Of Arundo Donax From A Riparian Area Within San Timoteo Canyon, Catherine E. Howe

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

A site within San Timoteo Canyon was revisited, 13-14 years after treatment, to look at long-term effects of Arundo donax removal. The data obtained were used to determine whether A. donax had re-invaded, other non-native species had established the area, or if native species were able to grow in place of the removed A. donax. The previous removals included a combination of grinding large patches of A. donax and then foliar spraying, foliar spraying of uncut plants, and direct spraying of hand cut stems, depending upon the location and size of the plant. The effects of the A. donax …

Two Roads Converging: Mitochondria And Inflammatory Signaling, Robert Gilkerson, Luis Materon Sep 2014

Two Roads Converging: Mitochondria And Inflammatory Signaling, Robert Gilkerson, Luis Materon

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

As the complexity of cellular signaling in inflammatory response emerges, it is increasingly clear that mitochondria are directly involved in, and in some cases are even required for, activation of inflammatory response. As a bioenergetic organellar network, mitochondria dynamically modulate their organization and function in response to cellular signaling cues and metabolic demand. The NLRP3 inflammasome, a caspase-activating multifactor scaffolding assembly, is directly activated by mitochondrial factors and functional parameters. Mitochondria are also heavily implicated as downstream targets of inflammation in a variety of tissues. Elevated inflammation and cytokine-mediated damage to mitochondria are implicated in the pathogenesis of disparate conditions …

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane Sep 2014

An Experimental Study Of The Implementation Of A Fluid Diode Inside A Sano Shunt, Patrick Austin Lane

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fluid diodes are fluidic devices that enhance fluid flow in a particular direction while inhibiting it in the opposite direction without the use of moving parts. This is accomplished through the use of nozzle shaped geometry on one side of the diode, and cusp shaped geometry on the opposing side. Fluid meets very little resistance as is travels though the nozzle side of the diode. The cusps on the other side of the diode reduce the effective flow area, thereby inhibiting flow. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a fluid diode installed in a reconstructed …

Scaling Multidimensional Inference For Big Structured Data, Elad Gilboa Sep 2014

Scaling Multidimensional Inference For Big Structured Data, Elad Gilboa

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

"In information technology, big data is a collection of data sets so large and complex that it becomes difficult to process using traditional data processing applications" [151]. In a

world of increasing sensor modalities, cheaper storage, and more data oriented questions, we are quickly passing the limits of tractable computations using traditional statistical analysis

methods. Methods which often show great results on simple data have difficulties processing complicated multidimensional data. Accuracy alone can no longer justify unwarranted memory

use and computational complexity. Improving the scaling properties of these methods for multidimensional data is the only way to make these methods …

Absolute Quantitation For Mr Molecular Imaging Of Angiogenesis, Matthew John Goette Sep 2014

Absolute Quantitation For Mr Molecular Imaging Of Angiogenesis, Matthew John Goette

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Medical imaging is undergoing a transition from an art that is used to make static images of human physiology into a scientific tool that employs advanced techniques to measure clinically relevant data. Recently, the role of magnetic resonance imaging in cardiovascular and oncological research has grown, largely due to the implementation of new quantitative techniques in the clinic. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) are particularly rich in their capability to quantify both physiology and disease via biomarker detection. While this is true for many applications of MRI in cardiovascular and oncological research, 19F MR molecular imaging is particularly …

Image Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Computed Tomography With Acoustically Heterogeneous Media, Chao Huang Sep 2014

Image Reconstruction In Photoacoustic Computed Tomography With Acoustically Heterogeneous Media, Chao Huang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT), also known as optoacoustic or thermoacoustic tomography, is a rapidly emerging hybrid imaging modality that combines optical image contrast with ultrasound detection. The majority of currently available PACT image reconstruction algorithms are based on idealized imaging models that assume a lossless and acoustically homogeneous medium. However, in many applications of PACT these assumptions are violated and the induced photoacoustic (PA) wavefields are scattered and absorbed as they propagate to the receiving transducers. In those applications of PACT, the reconstructed images can contain significant distortions and artifacts if the inhomogeneous acoustic properties of the object are not …

Electronic Properties And Oxidation/Reduction Chemistry Of A Series Of Late Transition Metal Complexes, Jia Luo Sep 2014

Electronic Properties And Oxidation/Reduction Chemistry Of A Series Of Late Transition Metal Complexes, Jia Luo

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Organometallic catalysts play an important role in various chemical reactions such as water oxidation, organic transformations, and CO2 reduction. In order to explore effective catalysts and understand their mechanisms, this dissertation focuses on a series of late transition metal complexes and a full study of their electronic properties and catalytic reactivity under various redox conditions. The tridentate ligand N-methyl-N, N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (L) has been employed in a dinuclear Co(II)Co(III) complex, [LCoII-(μ-carboxylato)-bis(μ-methoxo)-CoIIIL](ClO4)2. Electrochemical, spectroscopic, and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm that it belongs to a localized Class II mixed-valence system. Limited water oxidation catalytic ability of this complex …
