Aqueous Method For Making Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Con, J. Manuel Perez Figueroa, Sudip Nath

UCF Patents

The invention discloses an aqueous method of making polymer coated superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The method comprises providing a mixture of iron salts in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid. A solution of ammonium hydroxide is added to the mixture and stirred. Stirring continues with an aqueous solution of one or more biocompatible polymers so as to promote formation of polymer coated iron nanoparticles in suspension, wherein optionally at least one of the polymers in the coating may be aminated. Centrifuging the suspension leaves a supernatant without large particles. Filtering the supernatant through an ultrafiltration membrane and collecting the filtrate recovers polymer …

Illuminating The Experiences Of Single Fathers, Heidi Rosa Esbensen Sep 2014

Illuminating The Experiences Of Single Fathers, Heidi Rosa Esbensen

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the experiences of single fathers and their roles as primary caregiver to their children as men in society adopting traditionally feminine roles. There was one primary research question explored: How do single father's experience parenthood? This is explored through four sub questions and discussions about daily life and childrearing alone; childcare and work and family conflicts; use of services and support networks; and of particular interest, gender and the influence of masculinity. Through an analysis of interviews with 14 fathers of varying class status, age, education, and time spent as a single …

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

O6-alkylguanine-DNA alkyltransferase (AGT) is a single-cycle DNA repair enzyme that removes pro-mutagenic O6-alkylguanine adducts from DNA. Its functions with short single-stranded and duplex substrates have been characterized, but its ability to act on other DNA structures remains poorly understood. Here, we examine the functions of this enzyme on O6-methylguanine (6mG) adducts in the four-stranded structure of the human telomeric G-quadruplex. On a folded 22-nt G-quadruplex substrate, binding saturated at 2 AGT:DNA, significantly less than the ~ 5 AGT:DNA found with linear single-stranded DNAs of similar length, and less than the value found with the …

Coping Strategies, Psychopathological Symptoms, And Posttraumatic Growth Following Trauma And Stressful Life Events, Jessica Henninger Sep 2014

Coping Strategies, Psychopathological Symptoms, And Posttraumatic Growth Following Trauma And Stressful Life Events, Jessica Henninger

Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined the predictive value of stressful life experiences and coping strategies on posttraumatic growth and psychopathological symptoms. Using the Traumatic Life Events Questionnaire (TLEQ), the Brief COPE, the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), hierarchical linear regression models were used to explore the contribution of specific coping strategies to predict posttraumatic growth and psychopathological symptoms following exposure to a trauma/stressful life event. We hypothesized that coping styles such as planning, humor, and acceptance would predict more adaptive outcomes, whereas coping styles such as venting, substance use, and denial would predict more maladaptive outcomes. …

Defective mitochondrial distribution in neurons is proposed to cause ATP depletion and calcium-buffering deficiencies that compromise cell function. However, it is unclear whether aberrant mitochondrial motility and distribution alone are sufficient to cause neurological disease. Calcium-binding mitochondrial Rho (Miro) GTPases attach mitochondria to motor proteins for anterograde and retrograde transport in neurons. Using two new KO mouse models, we demonstrate that Miro1 is essential for development of cranial motor nuclei required for respiratory control and maintenance of upper motor neurons required for ambulation. Neuron-specific loss of Miro1 causes depletion of mitochondria from corticospinal tract axons and progressive neurological deficits mirroring …

Theoretical And Experimental Infrared Spectra Of Hydrated And Dehydrated Sulfonated Poly(Ether Ether Ketone), Jonathan Doan, Erin Kingston, Ian Kendrick, Kierstyn Anderson, Nicholas Dimakis, Philippe Knauth, Maria Luisa Di Vona, Eugene S. Smotkina

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Time-dependent FT-IR spectra of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) during dehydration show diminishing 1081 cm−1 and 1023 cm−1 band intensities concurrent with the emergence and shifting of bands at 1362 cm−1 and 898 cm−1. Animations of density functional theory calculated normal modes enable assignment of the 1081 cm−1 and 1023 cm−1 bands as group modes that include a sulfonate exchange site with C3v local symmetry, while the 1362 cm−1 and 898 cm−1 bands are assigned as group modes that include an associated sulfonic acid with no local symmetry (C1). In contrast to analogously assigned Nafion group mode bands, the SPEEK C3v …

Chlorovirus Skp1-Binding Ankyrin Repeat Protein Interplay And Mimicry Of Cellular Ubiquitin Ligase Machinery, Eric A. Noel, Ming Kang, Jiri Adamec, James L. Van Etten, George A. Oyler Sep 2014

Chlorovirus Skp1-Binding Ankyrin Repeat Protein Interplay And Mimicry Of Cellular Ubiquitin Ligase Machinery, Eric A. Noel, Ming Kang, Jiri Adamec, James L. Van Etten, George A. Oyler

James Van Etten Publications

The ubiquitin-proteasome system is targeted by many viruses that have evolved strategies to redirect host ubiquitination machinery. Members of the genus Chlorovirus are proposed to share an ancestral lineage with a broader group of related viruses, nucleo-cytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDV). Chloroviruses encode an Skp1 homolog and ankyrin repeat (ANK) proteins. Several chlorovirus-encoded ANK repeats contain C-terminal domains characteristic of cellular F-boxes or related NCLDV chordopox PRANC (pox protein repeats of ankyrin at C-terminal) domains. These observations suggested that this unique combination of Skp1 and ANK repeat proteins might form complexes analogous to the cellular Skp1-Cul1-F-box (SCF) ubiquitin ligase complex. …

Estimating Migration Rates Between Populations Of Zostera Marina In The San Francisco Bay, Elizabeth S. Gutierrez Sep 2014

Estimating Migration Rates Between Populations Of Zostera Marina In The San Francisco Bay, Elizabeth S. Gutierrez

STAR Program Research Presentations

Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is a highly clonal marine angiosperm that can also reproduce sexually through flowering and seed formation. In a previous study, Fst values from six microsatellite loci suggested that a perennial San Francisco Bay subpopulation at Point Molate (Richmond, California) was able to recover from a drastic 2006 die-off through seed recruitment from neighboring eelgrass subpopulations, changing its reproductive strategy from clonal to sexual. Although Fst measures continue to be widely used in population genetics, the assumptions under which they operate are not always appropriate given certain circumstances, such small population sizes and/or asymmetrical migration rates. Our summer …

Full Of Hot Air: Why The Atmospheric Trust Litigation Theory Is An Unworkable Attempt To Expand The Public Trust Doctrine Beyond Its Common Law Foundations, Andrew Ballentine

Student Works

The issue of climate change has been a major feature in public discourse for more than twenty-five years and the debate has vociferously engaged scientists, politicians, and the general public. Climate change is impacting the local, state, national and global levels, ranging from the loss of coastal land in Massachusetts to the loss of permafrost in Alaska. The challenge to addressing the crisis that these climate change impacts are presenting has inspired various proposals, both legal and scientific. The 2012 case Alec L.v. Jackson has brought the issue of Atmospheric Trust Litigation and potential claims for injury due to climate change …

Continuity, Constellation, And Unworking: An Exploration Of Language In Nietzsche, Alicen L. Beheler Sep 2014

Continuity, Constellation, And Unworking: An Exploration Of Language In Nietzsche, Alicen L. Beheler

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This project is an investigation of language in the work of Friedrich Nietzsche. The framing question is whether Nietzsche’s treatment of language as an explicit philosophical theme in published work and notes of the early 1870s is in fact only an early interest abandoned by the later work and notes in which the treatment of language as such does not assume such a central role. I suggest that if we consider language not as a unitary concept but as a constellation, a network of shifting thematic nodes, we find that language remains a chief interest throughout the Nietzschean corpus, but …

Verifying And Validating Multirobot Missions, Damian M. Lyons, Ronald C. Arkin, Shu Jiang, Dagon Harrington, Tsung-Ming Liu

Faculty Publications

We have developed an approach that can be used by mission designers to determine whether or not a performance guarantee for their mission software, when carried out under the uncertain conditions of a real-world environment, will hold within a threshold probability. In this paper we demonstrate its utility for verifying multirobot missions, in particular a bounding overwatch mission.
