Pathophysiology And Animal Modeling Of Underactive Bladder, Phillip P. Smith, George A. Kuchel
Pathophysiology And Animal Modeling Of Underactive Bladder, Phillip P. Smith, George A. Kuchel
UCHC Articles - Research
While the symptomology of underactive bladder (UAB) may imply a primary dysfunction of the detrusor muscle, insights into pathophysiology indicate that both myogenic and neurogenic mechanisms need to be considered. Due to lack of proper animal models, the current understanding of the UAB pathophysiology is limited, and much of what is known about the clinical etiology of the condition has been derived from epidemiological data. We hereby review current state of the art in the understanding of the pathophysiology of and animal models used to study the UAB.

Mathematical Analysis Of The Transmission Dynamics Of Hiv/Aids: Role Of Female Sex Workers, Navjot Kaur, Mini Ghosh, S. S. Bhatia
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The transmission of ’Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)’ that causes the ‘Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)’ is strongly associated with un-protected sex and at the present understanding this epidemic can reach higher prevalence threshold level when there are extensive sexual contacts between the sex workers and general population. In the present work, we investigate a nonlinear model for studing the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS epidemic with emphasis on the role of female sex workers. Here, we consider only the heterosexual transmissions of HIV/AIDS and formulate the mathematical model by dividing the total adult population under consideration into three different classes: male, female …

Inhibition Of The Thioesterase Activity Of Human Fatty Acid Synthase By 1,4- And 9,10-Diones, Herman H. Odens
Inhibition Of The Thioesterase Activity Of Human Fatty Acid Synthase By 1,4- And 9,10-Diones, Herman H. Odens
Faculty Works
Fatty acid synthase (FASN) is the enzyme that synthesizes fatty acids de novo in human cells. Although FASN is generally expressed at low levels in most normal tissues, its expression is highly upregulated in many cancers. Consistent with this notion, inhibition of FASN activity has demonstrated potential to halt proliferation and induce cell death in vitro and to block tumor growth in vivo. Consequently, FASN is widely recognized as a valuable therapeutic target. In this report, we describe a variety of 1,4-quinones and 9,10- anthraquinones, including several natural compounds and some newly synthesized compounds, that potently inhibit the thioesterase (TE) …

Know Your Community: Weedy And Invasive Species, Sharon Clay
Know Your Community: Weedy And Invasive Species, Sharon Clay
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
Weeds are the most important pest problem in agronomic and non-crop systems, including water bodies. Dollar losses associated with weedy and invasive plant species in the U.S. alone are in the billions. Weeds are threatening many ecosystems and becoming more important in many state and federal programs. In developed countries, infestations result in decreased yields, often harbor deleterious insects and diseases, and increase commodity costs due to management and control. In many developing countries, weeds have the increased potential to become the major threat to agricultural cropping systems because of the lack of labor for manual weeding. Therefore, the importance …

Who's Your Daddy: Father Trumps Fate In Supernatural, Lugene Rosen
Library Books and Book Chapters
"This chapter will examine the characters [of Supernatural] using several indicators of present/absent fathers: the father hunger scale designed by Paul. B. Perrin et al and the schemas developed by several father-focused theorists. These indicators will help explain the motivations that drive Dean, Sam, and to a lesser extent, Bobby. Based upon this exposure to fatherhood and father roles, Dean and Sam seem to be fulfilling a destiny that was decided, not by fate, but by the effects of their relationships with their father."

A Study Of Serious Violent And Sexual Offenders Released On Supervised Licence In Northern Ireland Between 2010 And 2013., Alexandra Delimata
Dissertations
Extended Custodial Sentences for serious offenders were introduced under the Criminal Justice (Northern Ireland) Order 2008. Recall rates for these offenders appear disproportionately high compared with other types of public protection sentenced offenders in Northern Ireland. Guided by life-course theories and using mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative research, the study investigates the outcomes for ECS offenders released into the community between 2010 and 2013. Content analysis developed profiles of all (N=57) ECS offenders released under supervised licence by 31 December 2013 and examined characteristics of recalled (N=31) and non-recalled (N=26) offenders to identify possible contributing factors to recall. The …

Light-chain amyloidosis (AL) is a degenerative disease characterized by the extracellular aggregation of a destabilized amyloidogenic Ig light chain (LC) secreted from a clonally expanded plasma cell. Current treatments for AL revolve around ablating the cancer plasma cell population using chemotherapy regimens. Unfortunately, this approach is limited to the ∼70% of patients who do not exhibit significant organ proteotoxicity and can tolerate chemotherapy. Thus, identifying new therapeutic strategies to alleviate LC organ proteotoxicity should allow AL patients with significant cardiac and/or renal involvement to subsequently tolerate established chemotherapy treatments. Using a small-molecule screening approach, the unfolded protein response (UPR) was …

The pepper weevil, Anthonomus eugenii Cano (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a major pest of pepper (Capsicum spp.; Solanales: Solanaceae) in the southern United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Feeding and oviposition cause flower and fruit abscission and internal fruit damage resulting in serious yield losses. Females lay eggs in flower buds and small fruits, shielding larvae from contact pesticides, leaving only the adult stage vulnerable. The purpose of this study was to investigate low-risk and organic products for use against the pepper weevil to provide both organic and conventional growers with more control options. A neem product (Ecozin® …

On Finding Exact And Approximate Solutions To Some Pdes Using The Reduced Differential Transform Method, Mahmoud Rawashdeh, Nazek A. Obeidat
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this research article, we give analytic approximate solution to the Sharma Tasso Olver (STO) equation and exact solutions to both the Schrodinger equation and the Telegraph equation. Also, the approximate analytical and exact solutions we present in this paper are calculated in the form of power series with easily computable components. The obtained results are in a good agreement with the exact solutions. We present an algorithm called the Reduced Differential Transform Method (RDTM) to find approximate solution and we compare the results with the exact solutions. This method reduces significantly the numerical computations compare with the existing methods …

A Study Of A Fractional-Order Cholera Model, Mohammad Javidi, Bashir Ahmad
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this work, we investigate the dynamical behavior of a fractional order cholera model. All the feasible equilibria for the system are obtained and the conditions for the existence of interior equilibrium are determined. Local stability analysis of the cholera model is studied by using the fractional Routh-Hurwitz stability conditions. Our results indicate the potential of fractional-order cholera models to cope with modern epidemics.

In this paper, the thin film flow of a power law MHD fluid on a vertical cylinder for a drainage problem has been studied. The nonlinear differential equation has been derived from the momentum equation by Jeffrey’s approach. Series solutions have been obtained for velocity, flow rate and thickness of the fluid film by Perturbation method. The graphical results for velocity profile and thickness of the film are discussed and examined for different parameters of interest.Without MHD our problem reduces to well known Newtonian and power law problem.

Solving The Maximum Independent Set Problem Based On Molecule Parallel Supercomputing, Zhaocai Wang, Jian Tan, Lanwei Zhu, Wei Huang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The maximum independent set Problem is to find a biggest vertex independent set in a given undirected graph. It is a vitally important NP problem in graph theory and applied mathematics, having numerous real life applications. It can be difficultly solved by the electronic computer in exponential level time. Simultaneity in previous studies DNA molecular computation usually be used to solve NP-complete continuous path search problems (for example HPP, traveling salesman problem), rarely for NP problems with discrete vertex or path solutions result, such as the maximum independent set problem, graph coloring problem and so on. In this paper, we …

Design For Several Hydraulic Parameters Of A Quadruped Robot, Xuewen Rong, Yibin Li, Jian Meng, Bin Li
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
For a quadruped robot with 12 active joints driven by linear hydraulic actuators, some important parameters, such as the oil flow of the hydraulic system and the needed maximum output force of each actuator, are hard to calculate precisely with kinematics and dynamics equations. The oil flow is mainly determined by the walking speed of the quadruped robot, but also influenced by the stride frequency, gait type and the foot trajectory. This paper planned the foot trajectory with cubic polynomial firstly. Then selected optimal stride frequency referred to that of four-legged mammals and stride length according to the required walking …
