Sub-Diffusive Scattering Parameter Maps Recovered Using Wide-Field High-Frequency Structured Light Imaging, Stephen C. Kanick, David M. Mcclatchy, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Jonathan T. Elliott, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue Sep 2014

Sub-Diffusive Scattering Parameter Maps Recovered Using Wide-Field High-Frequency Structured Light Imaging, Stephen C. Kanick, David M. Mcclatchy, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Jonathan T. Elliott, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

This study investigates the hypothesis that structured light reflectance imaging with high spatial frequency patterns (fx) can be used to quantitatively map the anisotropic scattering phase function distribution (P(θs)) in turbid media. Monte Carlo simulations were used in part to establish a semi-empirical model of demodulated reflectance (Rd) in terms of dimensionless scattering (μ′sf−1x) and γ, a metric of the first two moments of the P(θs) distribution. Experiments completed in tissue-simulating phantoms showed that simultaneous analysis of Rd spectra sampled at multiple f …

Food Supplementation Fails To Reveal A Trade-Off Between Incubation And Self-Maintenance In Female House Wrens, Cassie J. Lothery, Charles F. Thompson, Megan L. Lawler, Scott K. Sakaluk

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Incubating birds must allocate their time and energy between maintaining egg temperature and obtaining enough food to meet their own metabolic demands. We tested the hypothesis that female house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) face a trade-off between incubation and self-maintenance by providing females with supplemental food during incubation. We predicted that food supplementation would increase the amount of time females devoted to incubating their eggs, lower their baseline plasma corticosterone levels (a measure of chronic stress), and increase their body mass, haematocrit (a measure of anaemia), and reproductive success relative to control females. As predicted, food-supplemented females spent a …

Plyler Children: 21st Century Challenges With Judicial-Policy Implementation Affecting Immigrant Children In New Jersey, Christine T. Brenner, Kirk A. Leach, David Tulloch

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

Denying unauthorized immigrant children access to a free public education through incomplete judicial policy implementation may lead to an illiterate underclass. Communicating, implementing, and enforcing Plyler v. Doe school registration documentation requirements continue to be difficult at the district level. In 2008, an ACLU study in New Jersey found that 187 of 516 school districts were mandating inappropriate documentation from parents registering their children. Separation of powers requires that executive agencies proactively implement transformative judicial decisions.

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Acquisition, Extinction And Reinstatement Of Cocaine-Associated Memory: Relevance To Addiction Processes, Shervin Albert Liddie Sep 2014

Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Acquisition, Extinction And Reinstatement Of Cocaine-Associated Memory: Relevance To Addiction Processes, Shervin Albert Liddie

Open Access Dissertations

An important target for combating drug addiction is to understand the neurobiological mechanisms that sub-serve relapse to drug use. Drug addiction is thought to usurp the neural mechanisms of learning and memory. The conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm which employs the principles of Pavlovian learning is often used to investigate the incentive value of drugs of abuse and the formation of drug-associated memory. One caveat to conditioned reward studies is the use of a fixed daily dose of the addictive drug during training. However, the transition from drug use to addiction in human addicts involves an escalation in drug intake. …

Coprinus Comatus Cap Inhibits Adipocyte Differentiation Via Regulation Of Pparγ And Akt Signaling Pathway, Hyoung Joon Park, Jisoo Yun, Hong-Duck Kim, Chung-Kil Won, Gon-Sup Kim, Jae-Hyeon Cho

NYMC Faculty Publications

This study assessed the effects of Coprinus comatus cap (CCC) on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and the effects of CCC on the development of diet-induced obesity in rats. Here, we showed that the CCC has an inhibitory effect on the adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells, resulting in a significant decrease in lipid accumulation through the downregulation of several adipocyte specific-transcription factors, including CCAAT/enhancer binding protein β, C/EBPδ, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ). Moreover, treatment with CCC during adipocyte differentiation induced a significant down-regulation of PPARγ and adipogenic target genes, including adipocyte protein 2, lipoprotein lipase, and adiponectin. Interestingly, the …

Identifying The Characteristics Of An Ideal Reading Intervention Program For Teen Mothers, Kevin Joffre Sep 2014

Identifying The Characteristics Of An Ideal Reading Intervention Program For Teen Mothers, Kevin Joffre

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Research suggests that teen mothers tend to provide fewer literacy opportunities for their children than older mothers do. This is problematic, since low literacy has been linked to poor academic achievement. As a result, teen mothers and their children tend to be drawn into cycles of poverty. The goal of this project was to interview teen mothers in the Grand Rapids community in order to better understand their perceptions of reading and discover the kinds of books that interest them. Based on their responses, we have recommended a reading intervention program that targets the unique interests and needs of this …

Enhancing Immunomodulation On Innate Immunity By Shape Transition Among Rna Triangle, Square And Pentagon Nanovehicles, Emil F. Khisamutdinov, Hui Li, Daniel L. Jasinski, Jiao Chen, Jian Fu, Peixuan Guo

Center for Research on Environmental Disease Faculty Publications

Modulation of immune response is important in cancer immunotherapy, vaccine adjuvant development and inflammatory or immune disease therapy. Here we report the development of new immunomodulators via control of shape transition among RNA triangle, square and pentagon. Changing one RNA strand in polygons automatically induced the stretching of the interior angle from 60° to 90° or 108°, resulting in self-assembly of elegant RNA triangles, squares and pentagons. When immunological adjuvants were incorporated, their immunomodulation effect for cytokine TNF-α and IL-6 induction was greatly enhanced in vitro and in animals up to 100-fold, while RNA polygon controls induced unnoticeable effect. The …

Optimization Algorithms For Inference And Classification Of Genetic Profiles From Undersampled Measurements, Belhassen Bayar Sep 2014

Optimization Algorithms For Inference And Classification Of Genetic Profiles From Undersampled Measurements, Belhassen Bayar

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we tackle three different problems, all related to optimization techniques for inference and classification of genetic profiles. First, we extend the deterministic Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) framework to the probabilistic case (PNMF). We apply the PNMF algorithm to cluster and classify DNA microarrays data. The proposed PNMF is shown to outperform the deterministic NMF and the sparse NMF algorithms in clustering stability and classification accuracy. Second, we propose SMURC: Small-sample MUltivariate Regression with Covariance estimation. Specifically, we consider a high dimension low sample-size multivariate regression problem that accounts for correlation of the response variables. We show that, …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

From a historic and genetic point of view, the Otomi of the Mezquital Valley are a frontier people that have played an important role in the making of the population dynamics of the Mexican Central Plateau. Due to their antiquity in the area, the Otomi may be bearers of ancient genetic variability, shared mainly today with other groups belonging to the Otomanguean linguistic family and with the Nahua.

This study analyzes the HLA class II allele frequencies reported in Mexican indigenous populations, in order to provide an intra-regional level historical perspective of the genetic relationships between the Otomi of the …

Substrate-Mimetic Akt Inhibitor, Said M. Sebti, Jin Q. Cheng, Andrew D. Hamilton, Katherine Kayser-Bricker

USF Patents

Disclosed herein is a species of peptide and non-peptide inhibitors of Akt, an oncogenic protein. Beginning with a residue of Akt target substrate GSK-3, the functional domains of the GSK-3 residue were characterized. Functionally homologous non-peptide groups were substituted for the amino acids of the GSK-3 creating a hybrid peptide-non-peptide and non-peptide compounds capable of binding to Akt. The non-peptide compounds show increased stability and rigidity compared to peptide counterparts and are less susceptible to degradation. The bound non-peptide compounds exhibit an inhibitory effect on Akt, similar to peptide-based Akt inhibitors.

Facilitated Detection Of Social Cues Conveyed By Familiar Faces, Matteo Visconti Di Oleggio Castello, J. Swaroop Guntupalli, Hua Yang, M. Ida Gobbini

Dartmouth Scholarship

Recognition of the identity of familiar faces in conditions with poor visibility or over large changes in head angle, lighting and partial occlusion is far more accurate than recognition of unfamiliar faces in similar conditions. Here we used a visual search paradigm to test if one class of social cues transmitted by faces—direction of another’s attention as conveyed by gaze direction and head orientation—is perceived more rapidly in personally familiar faces than in unfamiliar faces. We found a strong effect of familiarity on the detection of these social cues, suggesting that the times to process these signals in familiar faces …
