Boron Nitride Nanotubes For Spintronics, Kamal B. Dhungana, Ranjit Pati Sep 2014

Boron Nitride Nanotubes For Spintronics, Kamal B. Dhungana, Ranjit Pati

Department of Physics Publications

With the end of Moore's law in sight, researchers are in search of an alternative approach to manipulate information. Spintronics or spin-based electronics, which uses the spin state of electrons to store, process and communicate information, offers exciting opportunities to sustain the current growth in the information industry. For example, the discovery of the giant magneto resistance (GMR) effect, which provides the foundation behind modern high density data storage devices, is an important success story of spintronics; GMR-based sensors have wide applications, ranging from automotive industry to biology. In recent years, with the tremendous progress in nanotechnology, spintronics has crossed …

Laboratory Measurements Of Contact Freezing By Dust And Bacteria At Temperatures Of Mixed-Phase Clouds, Joseph Niehaus, John Becker, Alexander Kostinski, Will Cantrell Sep 2014

Laboratory Measurements Of Contact Freezing By Dust And Bacteria At Temperatures Of Mixed-Phase Clouds, Joseph Niehaus, John Becker, Alexander Kostinski, Will Cantrell

Department of Physics Publications

Laboratory measurements of freezing by aerosol particles in contact mode are presented. The fraction of particles catalyzing freezing is quantified for three mineral dusts and three strains of bacteria. This is the most comprehensive such dataset to date for temperatures greater than −20°C, relevant for warm, mixed-phase clouds. For Arizona Test Dust, feldspar, or rhyolitic ash, more than 103 particles are required to initiate a freezing event at −20°C in the contact mode. At −15°C, more than 105 particles are required. An ice-negative strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens is an order of magnitude more effective than the mineral dusts …

In-Situ Immobilization Of Selected Heavy Metals In Soils Using Agricultural Wastes And Industrial By-Products, Lshak Che Fauziah, Abdullah Rosazlin Sep 2014

In-Situ Immobilization Of Selected Heavy Metals In Soils Using Agricultural Wastes And Industrial By-Products, Lshak Che Fauziah, Abdullah Rosazlin

Archival Material (2010s)

Malaysian soils dominantly fall (about 75%) into the Ultisol and Oxisol Orders in Soil Taxonomy. These soils are generally acidic, pH of 4.0-5.0 and contain essentially of variable charge minerals, namely sesquioxides and kaolinite, thus, have low cation exchange capacity or cations retention capacity. Factors controlling heavy metals reactions and mobility in the soil system are pH, CEC, redox potential, etc. and these parameters will be exploited in the management of heavy metals contaminated soils. Amongst the remediation techniques opted are liming, in-situ chemical stabilization using agricultural wastes converted to biochar's, such as oil palm empty fruit bunch and rice …

Early Resolution For Family Law Cases In Alaska's Courts, Stacey Marz

Vols 31-36 (2014-2019)

The Early Resolution Program (ERP), the first program of its kind in the nation, was developed by the Alaska Court System's Family Law Self-Help Center to provide self-represented litigants in family law cases with free legal assistance and mediation to help resolve issues and reach settlements without protracted court trials. This article discusses the ERP's goals and development, describes how cases are screened and processed, and presents ERP statistics though August 2014.

Tbx5 Is Required For Avian And Mammalian Epicardial Formation And Coronary Vasculogenesis., Nata Y Diman, Gabriel Brooks, Boudewijn P Kruithof, Olivier Elemento, Jonathan G Seidman, Christine Seidman, Craig T Basson, Cathy J. Hatcher

PCOM Scholarly Works

Rationale: Holt-Oram syndrome (HOS) is an autosomal dominant heart-hand syndrome caused by mutations in the TBX5 gene. Overexpression of Tbx5 in the chick proepicardial organ (PEO) impaired coronary blood vessel formation. However, the potential activity of Tbx5 in the epicardium itself, and Tbx5's role in mammalian coronary vasculogenesis, remains largely unknown. Objective: To evaluate the consequences of altered Tbx5 gene dosage during PEO and epicardial development in the embryonic chick and mouse. Methods and Results: Retroviral-mediated knockdown or upregulation of Tbx5 expression in the embryonic chick PEO as well as proepicardial-specific deletion of Tbx5 in the embryonic mouse (Tbx5(epi-/-)) impaired …

The Exploration Of Young Adults' Online And Offline Interpersonal Relationships, Josselyn B. Sheer Sep 2014

The Exploration Of Young Adults' Online And Offline Interpersonal Relationships, Josselyn B. Sheer

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The present study sought to learn about the ways in which young adults who are avid social networking site users (SNS) build and maintain interpersonal relationships given the ways in which social media shapes how young adults connect. This research explored how experiences via SNS such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tinder played a role in one's online and offline relationships. Inclusion criteria included being between the ages of 18 and 30, being an English speaker, logging onto SNS at least 10 times per day, and being able to speak in person or on the phone for one hour. With …
