Heroes At Home: Developing And Evaluating A Comprehensive Parenting Program For Expectant Parents And Parents Of Young Children, Olivia Adams
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Parental preparedness plays a critical role in parental wellbeing, relationship functioning, and early child development; however, many parents report feeling unprepared for the emotional, relational, and developmental demands of parenthood. Although psychoeducational parenting programs have demonstrated positive effects on parental mental health and child outcomes, access to comprehensive and time-efficient interventions remains limited. This pilot program evaluation assessed the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of a brief, online psychoeducational parenting program designed to reduce parenting stress and enhance parental self-efficacy. A quasi-experimental pre–post design was used to examine changes in parenting stress and parental self-efficacy following participation in a single 120-minute …
A Narrative Study Of The “Religious Dones” And Their Religious Identity, Relationship To God, And Social Connections, Michelle Suh
A Narrative Study Of The “Religious Dones” And Their Religious Identity, Relationship To God, And Social Connections, Michelle Suh
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
This qualitative study aims to learn about how religious dones — those who were formerly religious but no longer identify as religious — have constructed their life narratives in light of their religious deidentification, with particular attention on the evolution of religious identity, perceived relationship with God, and social connections across the lifespan. A narrative methodology was employed to capture participants’ experiences in a story format to understand the subjective meaning-making process of their lived experiences, and six young adults between the ages of 23-29 participated in the study. Data collection consisted of a life-story portion of the interview with …
Otherness And The Trinity: Toward A Critical Reimagining Of Christian Divinity From A Postcolonial Ethos, Taylor Muma
Otherness And The Trinity: Toward A Critical Reimagining Of Christian Divinity From A Postcolonial Ethos, Taylor Muma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I address the Trinity’s potential as an emancipatory relational archetype in the philosophy of religion, while at the same time recognizing the complicity of Christian doctrine in colonial conquest. My dissertation will be a reimagining of trinitarian theology as an ecotonal paradigm of multiplicity and alterity that provides a generative means of moving beyond the enmeshment of divinity with constructs of mastery.
The post-structuralist and postcolonial methodologies in this project emerge from the work of such scholars as Homi Bhabha, Jacques Derrida, Emmanuel Levinas and Gloria Anzaldúa. They foreground critical ideations of otherness and multiplicity in ways …
Improving Cluster Expansion Efficiency And Generalizability, Samuel D. Bills
Improving Cluster Expansion Efficiency And Generalizability, Samuel D. Bills
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The cluster expansion (CE) method is a powerful framework for modeling alloy systems by linking atomic configurations to thermophysical properties. However, constructing accurate and robust CE models requires careful selection of both training structures and cluster bases. In this work, we investigate how structure enumeration and cluster selection strategies influence CE performance in binary face-centered cubic alloys using a Julia-based implementation. Model performance is evaluated using empirical risk and the generalized aliasing decomposition (GAD), which provides insight into the relationship between model complexity and generalization error. We find that physically motivated selection strategies that prioritize small clusters consistently outperform approaches …
Reseeding Relations: Comparing Museum And Indigenous Seed Sharing & Rematriation Protocols In The Midwestern United States, Madeline G. Anderson
Reseeding Relations: Comparing Museum And Indigenous Seed Sharing & Rematriation Protocols In The Midwestern United States, Madeline G. Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) paved the way for the repatriation of ancestors and certain cultural objects to Indigenous communities, museums still struggle to address other forms of cultural returns. Heritage seeds, those which hold cultural significance to Indigenous peoples, held within museum collections perpetuates the colonization of Indigenous lifeways. This research examines rematriation as an Indigenous form of cultural return better suited to address these needs than limited repatriation models. I analyze how museums are working to create rematriation processes for their collections which reflect diverse Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies through a three-tiered approach: …

Artificial intelligence is now embedded across the scientific research and publishing ecosystem, influencing discovery, analysis, knowledge translation, authorship, peer review, and editorial workflows. In cardiovascular and biomedical sciences, these developments offer substantial opportunities to accelerate knowledge generation, integrate complex datasets, and improve efficiency and consistency. At the same time, they introduce new risks related to bias, transparency, data integrity, and authorship responsibility, potentially endangering trust in the scientific record. This commentary examines the evolving role of AI in biomedical publishing, with particular attention to generative models and machine learning tools. We review both benefits and limitations, highlight risks such as …
Beyond The Best Fit: Fitting Sir-Style Models To Data While Prioritizing Biological Meaning, Meredith L. Greer
Beyond The Best Fit: Fitting Sir-Style Models To Data While Prioritizing Biological Meaning, Meredith L. Greer
CODEE Journal
Many students find comfort in mathematics because math classes have been a place where they can find the “right answer” to exercises. Modeling courses typically emphasize more nuance, teaching students to try modeling approaches, compare back with real-world mechanisms and data, and then refine their models, in an ongoing cycle. One topic, however, can cause students to quickly revert into “right answer” mode: fitting a model to data. Phrases such as best fit and minimize the distance suggest there is one optimal solution that can be determined by an algorithm, and these algorithms typically have no relationship to the biology …
A Computational Micropatterning Approach To Study Caveolae And Protein Localization In Vascular Biology, Andrew B. Grespin
A Computational Micropatterning Approach To Study Caveolae And Protein Localization In Vascular Biology, Andrew B. Grespin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Caveolae are specialized, flask-shaped membrane invaginations highly expressed in endothelium and dysregulated in atherosclerosis. Caveolae play a central role in buffering membrane tension, yet the principles governing their spatial organization remain elusive. Thus, we sought to generate the most comprehensive and systematic analysis of blood vessel caveolar spatial organization. However, cell culturing, the backbone of human-focused biological research, does not standardly do well to model physiologically relevant cell behaviors such as migration or polarity-based tissue formation, particularly for punctate proteins and structures like caveolae. Micropatterns are cell-adhesive shapes that biophysically confine cell(s) to a user defined geometry which stereotype organelle …
Healthcare Access Challenges Among Asian Americans, Phyo Theingi
Healthcare Access Challenges Among Asian Americans, Phyo Theingi
University Honors Theses
Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial ethnic group in the U.S. According to the 2023 U.S. Census Bureau population estimate, Asian Americans account for 25.2 million (or 7.4%) of the nation's population. Asian Americans are not a monolith and represent a diversity of rich histories, cultures, languages and ethnicities. According to research conducted by the Pew Research Center, most Asian Americans face discrimination of some kind, including being treated as a foreigner in the U.S and being stereotyped as a model minority. They also experience health care access barriers. Research found that Asian Americans face barriers related to language …

Glycosphingolipids Regulate Phosphatidylserine Transport Machinery That Operates At Er-Pm Contact Sites, Ritchel Gannaban, Sher Ali, Wei Chen, Melanie Nguyen, Li Lai, Travis I Moore, Yubin Zhou, John F Hancock, Junchen Liu
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Plasma membrane (PM) localization of KRAS requires specific glycosphingolipids in the outer leaflet and phosphatidylserine (PS) in the inner leaflet. PM PS content is controlled by lipid transport proteins ORP5 and ORP8, which operate at ER-PM membrane contact sites (MCSs). Using high-resolution imaging, we now show that GSLs, including GM3 and SM4, are required to maintain ORP5 and ORP8 localization to MCSs. Genetic deletion or pharmacologic inhibition of enzymes required for the biosynthesis of GM3 or SM4 displaces PI4-kinase Type IIIα (PI4KIIIα) and its adaptor EFR3A from the PM, thereby reducing PM phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PI4P) content. PM interactions of ORP5 …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) undergoing lower extremity revascularization (LER) face high risks of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and major adverse limb events (MALE), despite guideline-directed lipid-lowering therapy. Apolipoprotein B100 (ApoB100), reflecting total atherogenic particle number, may identify residual risk beyond LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C). Therefore, we investigated whether baseline ApoB100 levels independently predict MACE and MALE beyond conventional risk factors in this high-risk population.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 167 T2DM patients with CLTI undergoing LER were followed for 12 months with visits at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-procedure. …

Origins Of Mitochondrial Diversity In Turkish Sheep Breeds: Anatolia As A Contact Zone Or Refugial Center?, Nezi̇h Ata, İbrahi̇m Cemal
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Advances in molecular genetics, especially the integration of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analyses, have significantly transformed our understanding of the origins, geographical centers, and dispersal dynamics of domestication, a field traditionally based on archaeological and morphological evidence. In this study, the mtDNA control-region sequences of 296 individuals from 15 native Turkish sheep breeds were analyzed to clarify their maternal genetic diversity and evolutionary origins. Sequencing of a 531-bp D-loop fragment revealed 53 polymorphic sites and 78 distinct haplotypes, indicating substantial haplotypic diversity (Hd = 0.918) and nucleotide diversity (π = 0.01391) within these populations. All five major ovine mitochondrial haplogroups (A, …

The In Vitro Feeding Of Hyalomma Marginatum (Koch, 1844), Nesli̇han Ölmez, Bariş Sari, Zati̇ Vatansever
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Ticks are obligate hematophagous ectoparasites that play a major role in the transmission of pathogens affecting both animals and humans. Investigations into tick biology, pathogen transmission, and the development of effective control strategies have traditionally depended on the extensive use of laboratory animals. Consequently, the development of reliable in vitro feeding systems is a valuable alternative approach with the potential to reduce animal use in tick research. In the present study, a previously described silicone membrane artificial feeding system was modified and applied for the in vitro feeding of Hyalomma marginatum (Koch, 1844). Feeding units were prepared using bovine blood …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein coupled receptor 5 (LGR5) has recently been considered as a stem cell marker seen especially in mitotically active tissues. The aim of the present study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of LGR5 in the bovine reproductive tract, which is regularly renewed in response to hormonal changes throughout the estrous cycle. The oviduct (ampulla, isthmus, and fimbria), uterus, and ovary tissue samples were collected from 12 cows at a local slaughterhouse. The samples were further identified as follicular (n = 6) or luteal (n = 6), subjected to routine histological procedures, and processed for immunohistochemical expression of …

Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is an indolent extranodal B-cell lymphoma that arises in close association with chronic Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and represents a unique paradigm of infection-driven oncogenesis. Persistent H. pylori colonization induces organized lymphoid tissue within the normally lymphoid-poor gastric mucosa, promoting sustained antigen-dependent T-cell-mediated B-cell proliferation and eventual clonal transformation. In contrast to many other lymphoid malignancies, early-stage gastric MALT lymphoma often regresses following microbial eradication, highlighting the central role of antigenic stimulation in disease pathogenesis. This review provides a contemporary overview of H. pylori-associated gastric MALT lymphoma, integrating epidemiology, molecular …

Design Principle For Staple-Mediated Stabilization Of Peptides And Proteins, Samantha C. Hatfield
Design Principle For Staple-Mediated Stabilization Of Peptides And Proteins, Samantha C. Hatfield
Theses and Dissertations
Macrocyclization, or stapling, has emerged as a powerful strategy to enhance the stability and function of peptides and proteins by constraining their conformational ensembles. Stapling can improve thermodynamic stability, increase resistance to proteolytic degradation, and enhance biomolecular recognition, making it particularly valuable for the development of peptide-based therapeutics. Despite these advantages, staple design remains largely empirical, relying on iterative screening of linker chemistries, lengths, and attachment sites. This trial-and-error approach limits scalability and hinders the rational design of stabilized peptide systems. In this work, we address this challenge by integrating large-scale experimental datasets with molecular dynamic simulations to develop predictive …

Rett syndrome (RTT) is an X-linked neurological disorder caused by MECP2 mutations, creating distinct cellular environments in females (mosaic) versus males (nonmosaic). Despite female patients representing most cases, how mosaicism contributes molecularly to RTT pathogenesis, particularly in presymptomatic stages, remains poorly understood. To address this question, we profiled hippocampal transcriptomes of young female and male RTT mice using bulk and single-nucleus RNA sequencing. We identified a core disease signature of consistently dysregulated genes only in MeCP2− cells across RTT models. Moreover, we uncovered non–cell autonomous effects exclusively in female MeCP2+ excitatory neurons, suggesting that these circuits are more vulnerable early …
Understanding Whole-Brain Dynamics Through Generative Modeling, Ruiqi Chen
Understanding Whole-Brain Dynamics Through Generative Modeling, Ruiqi Chen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
A central goal in cognitive neuroscience is to map mental processes onto their physical substrates. Traditionally, this goal is pursued by associating different mental processes with spatially-based anatomic localization. On the contrary, much less is known about the temporal dynamics of neural activity, particularly at the scale of the whole brain. Research into whole-brain dynamics has been challenging primarily due to the lack of an analytic framework that can summarize such dynamics, expose the underlying mechanisms, and associate the mechanisms with cognitive processes. In this dissertation, I describe my doctorate research aimed at building such a framework and deploying it …

Laser-Ablated Au@Ag@Au Core-Double Shell Nanoparticles To Fight Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria, Ahmed A. Aktafa, Uday M. Nayef, Majid S. Jabir
Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology
This work involved synthesizing Au@Ag@Au core double-shelled structures in deionized water (DW) using various laser energies (300, 500, and 700 mJ). These compounds served as antimicrobial agents against two bacterial types: Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii). The findings showed that bactericidal efficacy increased with higher laser energy. During production, a pulsed Nd-YAG laser synthesized Au@Ag@Au core-double-shell nanoparticles (NPs) in a 5 mL DW solution. The laser generated 250 pulses at energy levels of 300, 500, and 700 mJ. The device operated at a wavelength of 1064 nm. XRD analysis confirmed the crystal structure, …

Radiation-Driven Transformations In Polystyrene: Optical, Mechanical, And Morphological Insights Under High-Dose Gamma Exposure, Samah M. Hussein, Nahida J. Hameed, Evan T. Salim
Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology
The radiation sensitivity and the structure's stability of polystyrene (PS)-based polymers have been thoroughly investigated. The PS films were exposed to Gamma doses ranged between 10 to 30 kGy. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra showed a direct correlation between the dose of radiation and absorption. As the dose increases, the intensity of the absorption increases steadily, especially in the UV region below 400 nm. The exposed PS films to Gamma radiation demonstrated a linear response at wavelengths of 450, 650, and 850 nm. The response displayed a slight deviation of approximately ± 2, revealing a praised optical measurement. The optical band …

Bone defects resulting from trauma or pathological events are among the most significant clinical, social, and economic problems. Bioactive glass (BG) is a possible alternative to inert graft materials. In this study, BG was fabricated from a SiO2–CaO–NaO–PO5 system using a new acid-catalyzed sol-gel method. Field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the morphology of 45S5 BG powders, and their microstructural properties were investigated in detail. The common distinctive peaks of hydroxyapatite (HA) formation were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Bioactivity and degradation were evaluated by immersion in simulated body …

The development of nanoparticles (NPs) has enabled their usage in numerous biological, physico-chemical, and functional biomedical applications, especially as anti-cancer therapy. In this study, a cancer-healing conjugate composed of resveratrol (RES) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was formulated via liquid crystalline nanoparticles (LCNPs) covered with numerous layers of chitosan (+ charge) and hyaluronic acid (- charge), through a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method. The nanoparticle delivery drug systems based on lipids were used to assess therapeutic efficacy and biocompatibility against the cells of cancer. Many procedures described the production of RES/HCQ-LbL-LCNPs, such as zeta potential (ZP) analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, …

This document describes techniques and architectures for securing a computing device against physically coerced access by utilizing dynamic autonomic physiological state signatures. Processing circuitry of a computing device (e.g., a primary computing device, a wearable sentinel device, or an industrial control terminal) continuously determines a dynamic physiological baseline from sensor data (e.g., heart rate, galvanic skin response, inertial data). A physiological baseline and anomaly engine utilizes a machine learning model, which accounts for contextual states such as active exercise tracking to filter false positives, to detect a distress state corresponding to a non-voluntary autonomic deviation relative to the dynamic physiological …
Differentiation Of Self As A Therapist Effect In Couple Therapy, Nathan D. Knebel
Differentiation Of Self As A Therapist Effect In Couple Therapy, Nathan D. Knebel
Theses and Dissertations
Murray Bowen proposed that a therapist's level of differentiation of self influences therapeutic effectiveness, particularly in clinically distressed relational systems. Although existing literature has demonstrated that therapist effects account for a meaningful portion of variance in couple therapy outcomes, differentiation of self has received limited empirical attention as a therapist-level predictor. The present article proposes a framework for empirically examining Bowen's hypothesis by investigating whether therapist differentiation predicts trajectories of couple relationship quality across treatment. Additionally, the article explores theoretical pathways through which therapists may increase their level of differentiation, assuming Bowen's hypothesis is supported.
