Economic Contribution Of Agriculture And Food To Arkansas' Gross Domestic Product 1997-2012, Leah English, Jennie Popp, Wayne Miller
AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins
Agricultural production, processing, and retail industries are major contributors to the Arkansas economy in terms of GDP. Agriculture contributes to the economy through direct agricultural production, value-added processing, and agricultural retail activities, and it also plays an important role through its interactions with other sectors. The use of non-agricultural goods and services as inputs into the agricultural sector promotes diversified growth in Arkansas’ economy; thus agriculture remains a vital part of Arkansas’ economy. This report: 1) compares the relative size of the Agriculture and Food Sector in Arkansas with those of neighboring states, the Southeastern region of the United States, …

Effects Of Edmr On Veterans With Ptsd, Beth Abele
Effects Of Edmr On Veterans With Ptsd, Beth Abele
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Of all the mental health disorders, the most commonly diagnosed among Iraqi and Afghanistan wars is Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Hellmuth et al., 2012). Veterans who are suffering the effects of PTSD are treated every day in VA Medical Centers across the country, as well as in private sector hospitals. Many of these men and women are battling with drug addictions and alcohol abuse in attempts to self medicate (Murdoch et al., 2010). According to nationally represented study by Murdoch and colleagues (2010), one fifth of individuals who have been diagnosed with PTSD use drugs, alcohol or both to treat …
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Jaqueline Yunker
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Jaqueline Yunker
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome is an inflammatory response resulting from injury to the alveolar-‐capillary membrane. This injury is caused by a systemic inflammatory response that involves either direct trauma to the lung cells, such as a pneumonia, or indirect, such as sepsis. The inflammatory response that is triggered results in leaky alveolar-‐capillary beds and infiltration of the lungs (Villar, 2011). This is very common with approximately 150,000 cases annually in the United States and a very high mortality rate of 60,000 deaths per year (Pipeling & Fan, 2010). Despite the high mortality rate, 15-‐35%, there is no set of guidelines …
Myasthenia Gravis: A Closer Look, Erin L. Ricker
Myasthenia Gravis: A Closer Look, Erin L. Ricker
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare, chronic autoimmune disease that affects the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and the acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction (Mestecky, 2013). MG causes fluctuating skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue. According to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MGFA) (2010), 20 per 100,000 patients are diagnosed with MG, although researchers believe several more patients are misdiagnosed or missed entirely. Several neurological disorders have similar clinical presentations to MG making it difficult for inexperienced practitioners to identify and properly diagnose patients. Patients are often misdiagnosed and delayed proper treatment for one to two years after initial presentation of symptoms …

Enterovirus: What Everyone Should Know, Debra Mccorkle
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Enterovirus is capturing the attention of everyone; but what is it, who is affected by it, and can it be treated and/or prevented? Like any virus the enterovirus has many different strains. The strain capturing everyone’s attention lately is human enterovirus 68 (HEV68). This strain was first detected in California in 1962 (Oberste et al., 2004). Most cases of HEV68 are mild and do not require medical attention, however some can become severe and may cause serious heart or brain infections according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website (Updated September 8, 2014). HEV68 is a respiratory …
The Role Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In Depression, Katie Mendez
The Role Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In Depression, Katie Mendez
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
According to The World Health Organization, depression is the fourth leading cause of total disease burden and the leading cause of disability worldwide. In the United States, results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reflect a 16.2% lifetime depression prevalence. Symptoms of depression can range from mild to severe and can be episodic or chronic. Depression has a high rate of comorbidity with multiple chronic diseases and other mental health disorders, predominately anxiety. Unfortunately, few Americans diagnosed with depression actually receive sufficient treatment and symptom management. Previous research has shown that individuals are more likely to seek treatment …

Incretin Hormones And Their Effects In Type 2 Diabetes, Molly Getz
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a progressive disease characterized as having pancreatic β-cell dysfunction, insulin resistance and hyperglycemia (Stephens, 2010, p. 491). T2DM affected 29.1 million Americans or 9.3% of the population in 2012 and was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2010 ("ADA Statistics," 2014), with many of these patients finding it difficult to achieve or maintain adequate glycemic control despite making lifestyle changes and pharmacologic interventions (Freeman, 2007). Disease management of T2DM requires a comprehensive plan including medication therapy, education and active involvement of the patient, with the goal of therapy to …
Diagnosis, Pathophysiology, And Clinical Treatment Of A Patient With A Pheochromocytoma, Tricia L. Hale
Diagnosis, Pathophysiology, And Clinical Treatment Of A Patient With A Pheochromocytoma, Tricia L. Hale
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Hypertension is an extremely common diagnosis today. This condition can be caused by a multitude of factors, and can inversely cause numerous unfavorable processes in the body. One rare but significant source of hypertension is a tumor known as a pheochromocytoma, or PCC. This usually benign tumor is most often located on an adrenal gland, and can have a grave impact on the cardiovascular system. The tumor intermittently secretes an excess of the catecholamine norepinephrine, and if large enough, also secretes epinephrine [9]. These episodic bursts can cause extreme hypertension and tachycardia, leading to, at times fatal results. By understanding …

Enterococcus Faecalis Endocarditis: A Case Study, Torri Curtis
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Infectious endocarditis is an uncommon disease of the heart stemming from a bacterial or fungal infection on the endocardial surface of the heart or heart valve (Pierce, Calkins, & Thornton, 2012). From review of the literature, infective endocarditis is fairly uncommon and may be difficult to initially diagnose. Per Sabe, Shrestha, and Menon, occurrence of infective endocarditis (IE) is nearly 0.9-6.2 per 100,000 persons per year (2013). Several preexisting conditions such as aging, heart valve disease, implantable cardiac devices, a history of heart disease such as rheumatic fever, and invasive procedures can put a patient at higher risk for IE …

Outstanding Educational Performance Awards: Highlighting High-Achieving Arkansas Schools, 2014, Charlene A. Reid, Gary W. Ritter
Arkansas Education Reports
The GPA measure, we believe, is a better representation of student achievement on statewide standardized exams. In this report, we are presenting a list of the top 25 schools in each area. In some cases, these "top 25 lists" will contain more than 25 schools as some schools' GPA scores will be identical. This is not a new phenomenon, as we also exceeded 25 schools in previous reports when using the percent proficient and advanced metric as an indicator for student achievement; however, there are fewer ties using the more precise GPA measure.
After we present our overall snapshot of …

Metaphysics, Deep Pluralism, And Paradoxes Of Informal Logic, Jeremy Barris
Metaphysics, Deep Pluralism, And Paradoxes Of Informal Logic, Jeremy Barris
Humanities Faculty Research
The paper argues that metaphysical thought, or thought in whose context our general framework of sense is under scrutiny, involves, legitimates, and requires a variety of informal analogues of the ‘true contradictions’ supported in some paraconsistent formal logics. These are what we can call informal ‘legitimate logical inadequacies’. These paradoxical logical structures also occur in deeply pluralist contexts, where more than one, conflicting general framework for sense is relevant. The paper argues further that these legitimate logical inadequacies are real or inherent in sense itself rather than conventional, shows how they can feature in argumentative practice in these metaphysical and …
Implementing The Hmong Culture Into Classrooms, Chee Vang
Implementing The Hmong Culture Into Classrooms, Chee Vang
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The purpose of this capstone was to raise awareness of the importance of implementing the Hmong culture into classrooms, especially due to many Hmong students’ lack of academic performance in schools. Hmong students have suffered tremendously in school due to language barriers and culture shock. The research involved interviewing a sample of Fresno County teachers and students. Fresno has the largest population of Hmong people in California. The results suggest that creating a diverse and comfortable environment for Hmong students requires incorporating their culture into classrooms by using icebreakers or teaching a whole unit about the Hmong people. This will …
Educator Perceptions: The Impact Of Male Elementary School Teachers, Rod Matthew Garcia
Educator Perceptions: The Impact Of Male Elementary School Teachers, Rod Matthew Garcia
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Male teachers at the elementary school seem to have stagnated over the years, hovering between 18-20 percent levels. Much commentary and popular press articles attribute this phenomenon to the notion that elementary school is a female occupation. As a male elementary school teacher, I wanted to explore the reasons why this might occur and to find out if what was true for my male colleagues was also true for me. This phenomenological study examined the potential impact male elementary school teachers have within their professional environment. Data collection included in depth interviews with male teachers as well as meaningful conversations …

Taming The Software Chaos: True To Its Promise, Iftdss Eases The Burden Of Fuels Treatment Planning—And Does A Lot More Besides, Gail Wells
Joint Fire Science Program Digests
A key problem reported by the fuels treatment planning community is the difficulty and inefficiency of evaluating and then applying many planning tools and applications. Fuels specialists have struggled to find, load, and learn all the different fuels and fire planning models, not to mention the interface of running, adjusting, and inputting data specific to each model without the ability to easily share inputs/outputs between models.
The Interagency Fuels Treatment Decision Support System (IFTDSS) was conceived as a way for users to learn one interface, access a variety of data and models all in one place, and pass data (inputs …
Limitations On Nitrogen Removal By Treatment Wetlands Under Maritime Climatic Conditions, Gwen Miller
Limitations On Nitrogen Removal By Treatment Wetlands Under Maritime Climatic Conditions, Gwen Miller
SNS Master's Theses
The use of fertilizer has in part elevated nitrogen concentrations within surface and groundwater. High nitrate concentration can negatively impact human health as well as lead to algal blooms. Treatment wetlands can reduce the negative impacts of nitrate runoff, but the drivers of nitrate removal within maritime climates maybe limited by the cool winter temperatures despite a year-around growing season. We sought to understand the key limitations on nitrate removal within an experimental treatment wetland located within in California’s Central Coast region. We collected water samples and analyzed them for nitrate, ammonium, and dissolved organic carbon, temperature, pH, salinity and …
Evaluating A Proposed Farm Best Management Practice: Nitrous Oxide Emissions, In-Bed Nitrate And Carbon Monitoring, And Hydraulic Retention Times Of Denitrifying Woodchip Bioreactors In Monterey County, California, Christina M. David
SNS Master's Theses
Because surface waters in agricultural regions along the Central Coast of California have relatively high nitrate concentrations, there is a lot of interest to evaluate and implement various practices to improve water quality. This study assessed hydraulic retention times (HRTs), nitrate and carbon concentration gradients, and atmospheric fluxes and dissolved concentrations of nitrous oxide in three denitrification woodchip bioreactors on Salinas Valley farms that treat nitrate at 30 mg/L NO3-N to 180 mg/L NO3-N from field runoff. To evaluate HRT, we used sodium bromide tracer tests on two of the bioreactors, DBR1 and DBR 3, the former which had double …

Maldi-Tof Ms As A Supportive Tool For The Evaluation Of Bacterial Diversity In Soils From Africa And The Americas, Adrian Douglas Allen, Maria Velez-Quinones, Broderick Eribo, Vernon Morris
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Identification and characterization of viable-culturable bacteria (VCB) associated with soils from Africa and the Americas is significant for environmental and battlefield security. Such analyses are scarce and their evaluation using traditional microbiological methods do not fully elucidate the structure and chemotaxonomic characteristics of the microbial community. In this study, matrix assisted laser desorption time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) spectrometry in addition to 16S rRNA sequencing, and diversity indices were employed to characterize VCB and their associated biomarkers. Nineteen genera were identified across all sample locations, but only four (Bacillus, Brevibacillus, Paenibacillus and Terribacillus) confirmed by ClustalW2 as being …
Neonatal Nmda Receptor Blockade Disrupts Spike Timing And Glutamatergic Synapses In Fast Spiking Interneurons In A Nmda Receptor Hypofunction Model Of Schizophrenia, Kevin Jones, Joshua Corbin, Molly Huntsman
Neonatal Nmda Receptor Blockade Disrupts Spike Timing And Glutamatergic Synapses In Fast Spiking Interneurons In A Nmda Receptor Hypofunction Model Of Schizophrenia, Kevin Jones, Joshua Corbin, Molly Huntsman
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
The dysfunction of parvalbumin-positive, fast-spiking interneurons (FSI) is considered a primary contributor to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (SZ), but deficits in FSI physiology have not been explicitly characterized. We show for the first time, that a widely-employed model of schizophrenia minimizes first spike latency and increases GluN2B-mediated current in neocortical FSIs. The reduction in FSI first-spike latency coincides with reduced expression of the Kv1.1 potassium channel subunit which provides a biophysical explanation for the abnormal spiking behavior. Similarly, the increase in NMDA current coincides with enhanced expression of the GluN2B NMDA receptor subunit, specifically in FSIs. In this study mice …
