'Precious Objects': Strange 'Things' In James And Wharton, John Kinard
'Precious Objects': Strange 'Things' In James And Wharton, John Kinard
Theses and Dissertations
In this work, I attempt to examine the importance of things, the strange agency of objects, which emerges in the literature of the late nineteenth century. To this end, I examine the economy of things in both Henry James and Edith Wharton. I attempt to connect this object agency with the emergent discourses and technologies of the time, and to link these both with media and queer theory.
Global Climate Change And The Southern Ocean: How Antarctic Fishes Physiologically Respond To A Changing Environment From The Cellular To The Organismal Level, Laura A. Enzor
Theses and Dissertations
Studies have projected that future changes in sea surface temperature and pCO2 levels will impact higher latitudes to a greater extent than in temperate regions. For notothenioid fishes of the Southern Ocean, evolution in extremely stable, cold waters has resulted in several adaptations which have left these fishes poorly prepared for global climate change. I have analyzed the metabolic and cellular response of Trematomus bernacchii, Pagothenia borchgrevinki and Trematomus newnesi to a long-term, multi-stressor scenario relevant to the predicted changes in the Southern Ocean. By combining whole animal respirometry with cellular level analysis of energy allocation, osmoregulatory mechanisms and cellular …
Methods For Identifying Regions Of Brain Activation Using Fmri Meta-Data, Meredith A. Ray
Methods For Identifying Regions Of Brain Activation Using Fmri Meta-Data, Meredith A. Ray
Theses and Dissertations
Functional neuroimaging is a relatively young discipline within the neurosciences that has led to significant advances in our understanding of the human brain and progress in neuroscientific research related to public health. Accurately identifying activated regions in the brain showing a strong association with an outcome of interest is crucial in terms of disease prediction and prevention. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is the most widely used method for this type of study as it has the ability to measure and identify the location of changes in tissue perfusion, blood oxygenation, and blood volume. In practice, the three-dimensional brain locations …
Molecular Mechanisms Of Gap Junction Regulation By The E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Wwp1, Measho Hagos Abreha
Molecular Mechanisms Of Gap Junction Regulation By The E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Wwp1, Measho Hagos Abreha
Theses and Dissertations
Ubiquitylation is a post-translational modification that influences a wide variety of cellular processes including protein degradation, protein subcellular localization, cell cycle progression, transcription, and DNA damage repair. Covalent attachment of the small ubiquitin molecule to a target protein involves the sequential action of three enzymes (E1, E2, and E3). In this process, substrate specificity is conferred by the E3 ligase. Our work has focused on the function of one such E3 ubiquitin ligase, WWP1. Known targets of WWP1 include cell cycle proteins, tumor suppressors, and transcription factors that promote differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells to the osteoid lineage. Recently, we …
High-Performance Meta-Genomic Gene Identification, Ibrahim Savran
High-Performance Meta-Genomic Gene Identification, Ibrahim Savran
Theses and Dissertations
Computational Genomics, or Computational Genetics, refers to the use of computational and statistical analysis for understanding the structure and the function of genetic material in organisms. The primary focus of research in computational genomics in the past three decades has been the understanding of genomes and their functional elements by analyzing biological sequence data. The high demand for low-cost sequencing has driven the development of highthroughput sequencing technologies, next-generation sequencing (NGS), that parallelize the sequencing process, producing thousands or millions of sequences concurrently. Moore’s Law is the observation that the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles approximately every two …
The Cardio-Protective Effects Of Substance P In Both Ischemia/Reperfusion And And Short-Term Hypoxia Rat Models, Shaiban Jubair
The Cardio-Protective Effects Of Substance P In Both Ischemia/Reperfusion And And Short-Term Hypoxia Rat Models, Shaiban Jubair
Theses and Dissertations
Substance P, a member of the tachykinin family, is found primarily in sensory nerves. In the heart, substance P-containing nerve fibers surround coronary vessels, making them ideally positioned to sense changes in coronary pressure and/or flow. Recent studies have identified substance P as being protective acutely following ischemia-reperfusion due to its ability to induce coronary blood vessel vasodilation. In addition, studies conducted on non-cardiac tissue have reported substance P to be protective against cell death through a mechanism involving activation of anti-apoptotic AKT pathway. However, the possibility of substance P being similarly cardioprotective has not been reported. Accordingly, the purpose …
Temporal Constraints On Holocene Initiation And Termination Of Mound Development At An Episodic Gas Hydrate And Cold Seep System, Woolsey Mound, Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Nathan Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
Woolsey Mound is a thermogenic gas hydrate and cold seep system in the deepwater (900m) Gulf of Mexico. A set of sub-bottom seismic profiles acquired at MC-118 Woolsey Mound provide decimeter-scale vertical resolution of the upper ~50m of the subsurface throughout the lease block. Integration of these data with radiocarbon, lithostratigraphic, and biostratigraphic data from shallow gravity cores provides the basis for detailed interpretation of the mound evolution within the last 12,000 years. Uniform sedimentation during the Last Glacial Maximum and following changes in sediment distribution over MC-118 suggests modern mound activity did not begin until at least ~12ka. Development …
The Effects Of Robot-Child Interactions On Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Coordination, Kinga Palatinus
The Effects Of Robot-Child Interactions On Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Coordination, Kinga Palatinus
Master's Theses
Coordination is crucial throughout development, from motor development and language acquisition to children’s play and other social interactions. Based on the links between motor and social behavior, proper coordination should help children connect socially with others. Being part of a larger study investigating the effects of a multisystem intervention tool for children with ASD, this work examined the effect of robot-child interaction on interpersonal and intrapersonal coordination in typically developing children. 5-year-olds and 7 year-olds participated in a four-week training protocol, where children had to copy the movements of a small humanoid robot. Measures of cross recurrence quantification analysis revealed …
Bio-Enhanced Constructivism: Moral Facts For The Naturalistic But Morally Serious Philosopher, Jason Gardner
Bio-Enhanced Constructivism: Moral Facts For The Naturalistic But Morally Serious Philosopher, Jason Gardner
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACTBio-Enhanced Constructivism: Moral Facts for the Naturalistic but Morally Serious PhilosopherbyJason GardnerDoctor of Philosophy in PhilosophyWashington University in St. Louis, 2014Professor Eric Brown, ChairThere is a tension between being both morally and naturalistically serious because it is doubtful that features philosophers have ascribed to moral facts in order to explain why we should take them seriously can be given a naturalistic accounting. Yet even serious naturalists who think the tension is real and troubling persist in trying to be serious moralists. I do not think they can do so on their own terms. Thus the purpose of this dissertation: to …
The Late Ordovician Biogeochemical Carbon Cycle, John Garrecht Metzger
The Late Ordovician Biogeochemical Carbon Cycle, John Garrecht Metzger
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The isotopic composition of the carbonate carbon (δ13Ccarb) is one of the best tools for understanding the biogeochemical carbon cycle through Earth history. δ13Ccarb is also used to chemostratigraphically correlate coeval strata. This dissertation has three main foci that all utilize δ13Ccarb as the common data type. The geologic interval investigated was the Late Ordovician (458-444 Ma) with emphasis on the Guttenberg δ13C excursion, a globally correlated, positive ~3 / event that is ~400 kyr in duration. In the first topic we evaluate post-depositional alteration (i.e., diagenesis) of δ13Ccarb signals. In the second topic, we make reconstructions of sea level …

A Four-Dimensional Image Reconstruction Framework For Pet Under Arbitrary Geometries, Aswin John Mathews
A Four-Dimensional Image Reconstruction Framework For Pet Under Arbitrary Geometries, Aswin John Mathews
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a functional imaging modality with applications ranging from the treatment of cancer, studying neurological diseases and disease models. Virtual-Pinhole PET technology improves the image quality in terms of resolution and contrast recovery. The technology calls for having a detector with smaller crystals placed near a region of interest in a conventional whole-body PET scanner. The improvement is from the higher spatial sampling of the imaging area near the detector. A prototype half-ring PET insert built to study head-and-neck cancer imaging was extended to breast cancer imaging. We have built a prototype half-ring PET insert for …

"Nuns in the Newsroom: The Sisters of Marillac College and U.S. Sisters' Involvement in Social Justice Reform" is a senior honors history thesis project. The Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) was guided by the spirit of aggiornamento, or “a bringing up to date” of the Catholic Church. As a result of Vatican II documents such as Gaudium et Spes, they influenced U.S. sisters to expand their ministry from performing works of mercy to advocating for legal, economic, and social justice in addition to their charitable endeavors. However, after doing research at the Daughters of Charity Archives in Emmitsburg, Maryland and …
A Reinforcement-Learning Framework For Interpreting Trial-By-Trial Motor Adaptation To Novel Haptic Environments, Ranjan Patrick Khan
A Reinforcement-Learning Framework For Interpreting Trial-By-Trial Motor Adaptation To Novel Haptic Environments, Ranjan Patrick Khan
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Motor adaptation is often considered to occur under the influence of sensory signals, which is usually readily available for humans performing most motor tasks. However, humans can also use reward or other qualitative feedback to reinforce previous actions and perform adaptation. In these experiments, we introduce reward feedback to a traditional motor adaptation experiment: reach adaptation to a velocity-dependent force field. Drawing from the literature of computer science and machine learning, we use a reinforcement-learning framework to interpret the pattern of force generation and reward-prediction errors and observe the effects of concurrent and isolated reward and sensory feedback.

Aerosol Techniques For Deposition And Characterization Of Biological And Biomimetic Sensitizers For Solar Devices, Vivek B. Shah
Aerosol Techniques For Deposition And Characterization Of Biological And Biomimetic Sensitizers For Solar Devices, Vivek B. Shah
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Nano-structured columnar films synthesized by the aerosol chemical vapor deposition (ACVD) system are unique, and have proved to be useful for fabricating solar cells and in other applications. The film formation by ACVD process involves three main phenomenon - aerosol formation and growth, deposition, and restructuring. In this work, thin film formation by the ACVD process is simulated by combining three models - (A) particle formation in gas phase by atrimodal model, (B) particle deposition onto heated substrate by a Brownian dynamics model and (C) sintering on the heated substrate by a multi-particle geometric sintering model (MPGSM). Modelling and simulation …

Model-To-Data Comparisons Reveal Influence Of Jellyfish Interactions On Plankton Community Dynamics, Kevin P. Crum, Heidi L. Fuchs, Paul Bologna, John Gaynor
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Taxonomic shifts can alter predator feeding preference and modify ecosystem dynamics through top-down control. In Barnegat Bay-Little Egg Harbor Estuary (New Jersey, USA), sea nettle Chrysaora quinquecirrha abundances have increased in the northern portions of the estuary. We evaluated the geographical variation in top-down influence of C. quinquecirrha on plankton community dynamics. We simulated a range of jellyfish- to copepod-dominated ecosystems using a size-resolved nutrient-phytoplankton-zooplankton (NPZ) model. Zooplankton feeding was parameterized as a community average based on predator-prey size ratios and breadth of prey sizes of dominant species. We compared model outputs to data collected in the estuary during 2 …

Breast cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed cancer types in women worldwide and is the second leading cause of cancer-related disease in the USA. Recent data have suggested that many cytokines may be essential roles in the pathogenesis of breast cancer. The goal of this paper is to examine the major cytokines involved in breast cancer immunotherapy and discuss their basic biology and clinical presentation. IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and TNF-α in patients with breast cancer (n = 63) and healthy individuals as control (n = 68). We found that there were higher levels of IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and …
Origin Of Maternal Age Effect In Congenital Heart Disease Risk For Offspring, Claire Elaine Schulkey
Origin Of Maternal Age Effect In Congenital Heart Disease Risk For Offspring, Claire Elaine Schulkey
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Increasing maternal age is widely acknowledged to lead to greater likelihood of pregnancy complications and congenital abnormalities, but the basis of this effect has not been well studied. Often dismissed as the product of oocyte ageing, the mechanistic basis of this maternal age effect is likely more complex.Congenital heart disease is a classic complex disease with multiple genetic and environmental modifiers, including maternal age. Maternal ageing is a known risk-factor in humans, and has been shown to exist in an Nkx2-5 haploinsufficient mouse model for the disease. This mouse model's maternal age risk is dependent upon strain background, with C57BL/6N …
Kinetic Analysis And Inhibition Studies Of Iron-Dependent Histone Demethylases, Barbara Gordon Cascella
Kinetic Analysis And Inhibition Studies Of Iron-Dependent Histone Demethylases, Barbara Gordon Cascella
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The research presented herein focuses on the kinetics and inhibition of the KDM4 subfamily of Jumonji C (JmjC) domain-containing histone demethylases (HDMs). Belonging to the larger class of alpha-ketoglutarate (alpha-KG)-dependent, non-heme iron monooxygenases, the JmjC-HDMs remove methyl groups from mono-, di-, and tri-methylated histone lysine residues through an Fe(IV)-oxo-catalyzed hydroxylation reaction. JmjC-HDMs have been found to play integral roles in the maintenance of genomic integrity as well as in the regulation of transcription. Three KDM4 members were studied: the mixed H3K9/H3K36 demethylases KDM4A and KDM4C, and the pure H3K9 demethylase KDM4E. KDM4C is a hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) target gene …

With the upgrade of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) usable quantities of many isotopes of interest will be produced and available for harvest from an aqueous beam dump. If available, these isotopes would be of interest to a broad range of applications such as medicine, geology, and stockpile stewardship. Preliminary experiments were performed at the NSCL in order to determine the feasibility of isotope harvesting at (FRIB).A water target station that consisted of a …
Gothic Literature And The Politics Of Indistinction, Nicholas Everett Miller
Gothic Literature And The Politics Of Indistinction, Nicholas Everett Miller
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
I recover the Gothic as a literature of political possibility. While scholars have long associated the Gothic tradition with political fear, I argue that Gothic novels challenge liberal ideas of the self to produce a sometimes radically egalitarian politics of freedom in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. Edmund Burke made much of the fearfulness of an egalitarian politics in the 1790s, and literary historians have relied on his influence to argue that Gothic fiction is primarily an expression of the fear that comes with the collapse of familial, social, and political distinctions. But fear is not all that accompanies such …
An Essential Role For Self-Pmhc Throughout The Life Of A Cd4 T Cell: Contributions In The Thymus And Periphery, Stephanie Rodriguez
An Essential Role For Self-Pmhc Throughout The Life Of A Cd4 T Cell: Contributions In The Thymus And Periphery, Stephanie Rodriguez
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
It is well established that self-peptide Major Histocompatibility Complexes (hereafter self-pMHC) are essential for the development of a broad repertoire of mature, self-tolerant CD4 and CD8 T cells. Despite clear knowledge that the pool of self-ligands is critical for positive and negative selection, the exact kinetics and dynamic nature of thymocyte interaction with self-pMHC class II (self-pMHCII) bearing antigen-presenting cells (APCs) during development is still largely a mystery. The enigmatic nature of selecting self-pMHC is not unique to the thymic environment; increasingly evident is the dependence of peripheral T cells on extra-thymic self-pMHC expression, specifically selecting self-pMHC, for their homeostatic …
Climate-Induced Changes In The Germination Phenology Of Boechera Stricta, Samuel Johnson
Climate-Induced Changes In The Germination Phenology Of Boechera Stricta, Samuel Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Climate change is having demonstrable, worldwide impacts on ecological systems in ways that have modified aspects of organism behavior. Plant phenologies have responded to warmer temperatures in a variety of ways that may have implications for long-term species survival. How germination phenology changes in response to warmer climate is a largely unexplored question yet the ability of a plant to advance or delay germination in unfavorable conditions is critical for survival. Knowing the relative success and timing of germination under different climate regimes is important in understanding whether species can keep pace with the rate of climate change via migration …
Neodymium Isotopic Signature Of The Deep Western Boundary Current And The Distribution Of Neodymium Isotopes And Concentrations Across Line W, Brian Daniel Duggan
Neodymium Isotopic Signature Of The Deep Western Boundary Current And The Distribution Of Neodymium Isotopes And Concentrations Across Line W, Brian Daniel Duggan
Theses and Dissertations
The capacity of the neodymium (Nd) 143Nd/144Nd ratio to trace modern ocean circulation accurately allows for the assumption that the ratio can also accurately trace paleo ocean circulation. Therefore, a complete understanding of Nd cycling and its effect on the isotopic composition in the oceans is vital. Traditionally, Nd isotopic composition (Nd IC) is considered a conservative property in the open ocean, while coastal and margin environments tend to be dictated by nonconservative exchange processes. However, Nd concentrations ([Nd]) in the open ocean typically display a nutrient like profile, increasing with depth. Such a discrepancy between Nd IC and [Nd] …
Finite Element Analysis Simulations Of Micro And Nano-Electromechanical Sensors For Design Optimization, Nicholas Frank Deroller
Finite Element Analysis Simulations Of Micro And Nano-Electromechanical Sensors For Design Optimization, Nicholas Frank Deroller
Theses and Dissertations
Micro and Nano-electromechanical sensors (MEMS and NEMS) provide a means of actively sensing minute changes in the surrounding environment. Small changes in temperature, momentum, and strain may be sensed in passive modes while greater sensing possibilities exist in active modes. Theoretical femto-gram resolution mass detection and heated element sensing methods may be used while volatile organic compound (VOC) sensing may be achieved when combined with a functionalization layer or device heating. These devices offer a great reduction in cost and offer increased mobility by allowing a "lab-on-chip" solution for the prospective user while also greatly reducing the amount of energy …

Design And Development Of A Novel Class Of Cell Cycle Cdk Inhibitors Targeting The Cyclin Binding Groove Utilizing The Replace Strategy, Padmavathy Nandha Premnath
Theses and Dissertations
Inhibition of CDK2 activity in G1 and S phases of the cell cycle can promote selective apoptosis of cancer cells through the E2F1 pathway. Currently available CDK inhibitors target the ATP binding pocket and result in lack of specificity for the cell cycle vs. the transcriptional CDKs. It has been shown that a peptide HAKRRLIF derived from the tumor suppressor p21 binds to the cyclin binding groove (CBG) and selectively inhibits cell cycle CDKs (CDK2/Cyclin A, CDK2/Cyclin E and CDK4/Cyclin D). The CBG is unique to cell cycle CDKs hence targeting this site avoids the inhibition of transcriptional CDKs can …
Synthetic Physical Models For Animating Unsteady Fish Motions, Shyh-Kuang Ueng, Hong-Kai Chen
Synthetic Physical Models For Animating Unsteady Fish Motions, Shyh-Kuang Ueng, Hong-Kai Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents physical models for simulating unsteady fish motions, including bursting, gliding, braking, turning, ascending and descending. A new wave model, the controllable body wave model, is developed to undulate the fish body to produce bursting and gliding motions. A key frame approach is adopted to realize braking, turning, descending and ascending. In the key frame method, individual motions are decomposed into sequences of key steps. The gestures of the fish in these key steps are recorded and regarded as key frames. In the run time, these recorded key frames are sequentially reproduced to generate swimming patterns. In addition …
Accelerating Heuristic Search For Ai Planning, You Xu
Accelerating Heuristic Search For Ai Planning, You Xu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
AI Planning is an important research field. Heuristic search is the most commonly used method in solving planning problems. Despite recent advances in improving the quality of heuristics and devising better search strategies, the high computational cost of heuristic search remains a barrier that severely limits its application to real world problems. In this dissertation, we propose theories, algorithms and systems to accelerate heuristic search for AI planning.
We make four major contributions in this dissertation. First, we propose a state-space reduction method called Stratified Planning to accelerate heuristic search. Stratified Planning can be combined with any heuristic search to …

Science-based planning and prioritization can help achieve greater return on investment of limited conservation funds. We conducted a GIS-based multicriteria decision analysis to prioritize efforts to eradicate populations of invasive alien species that threaten native biota on the islands of Mexico. We evaluated 29 Mexican islands with documented presence of invasive mammals and characterized the following attributes of each island: presence of endemic taxa, presence of threatened species, presence of important seabird nesting areas, species richness, likelihood of reinvasion, eradication feasibility, and economic cost. We categorized the islands into 4 priority categories for eradication action. The highest priority islands where …
