Multivariate Remote Process Sensing For Online Quality Control Of Injection Molding, Xinyao Tang
Multivariate Remote Process Sensing For Online Quality Control Of Injection Molding, Xinyao Tang
Master's Theses
A new wireless multivariate sensor (MVS) is designed, prototyped, structurally embedded into a mold structure to provide in situ feedback of four process states within mold cavity: melt temperature, melt pressure, melt velocity and melt viscosity, which closely correlate to the quality of manufactured products through the constitutive viscoelastic behavior of the polymer being processed. The developed MVS enables the improved observability of injection molding and provides a new process instrumentation and control methodology that sets up, assures, and optimizes the quality of injected products. Relationship between the key in-process states and quality characteristics (e.g., thickness and width of the …
The Effect Of Ph And Counterion On The Size Distribution And Luminescence Lifetime Of Terbium-Doped Lanthanum Nanocrystals, Sarah Baker
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In recent years, nanoparticles have been applied to and have gained prevalence in fields such as chemistry, biology, the medical sciences, and biotechnology, and have attracted the attention of medical researchers as potential microscopic drug delivery systems in the human body. In particular, nanoparticles made with the lanthanides have shown themselves to be useful to many biological applications due to their unique luminescent properties. It is crucial to determine optimum synthetic parameters so that nanoparticles are both small enough to pass through the kidneys and also have the ability to attach different functional groups so that they may be relevant to …

Biological And Physiological Condition Of Juvenile California Halibut (Paralichthys Californicus) Exposed To A Contamination Gradient In Mission Bay, Ca, Kevin Stolzenbach
Biological And Physiological Condition Of Juvenile California Halibut (Paralichthys Californicus) Exposed To A Contamination Gradient In Mission Bay, Ca, Kevin Stolzenbach
Theses
Contaminated sediments in marine environments have been shown to be good indicators of ecological risk and a means to assess anthropogenic impacts on marine habitats and the animals that inhabit them (Long et al. 1995, Rattner 2009). Estuarine sediments are especially complex media with regard to physical, chemical, and biological characteristics that trap, store, modify and sometimes release contaminants to the biota (Long et al. 1995). Especially vulnerable are animals that are in constant contact with the sediments, such as flatfishes that partially bury themselves for camouflage (Costa et al. 2011). Impacts can be assessed in a number of ways, …

Women In Kazakhstan: A Multifaceted Approach To Female Political Representation, Ashley Gaile Benedict
Women In Kazakhstan: A Multifaceted Approach To Female Political Representation, Ashley Gaile Benedict
Dissertations
This investigation focuses on two competing theories (historical institutionalism and social constructivism) and their explanatory value in regards to female political representation in Kazakhstan. Historical Institutionalism maintains that current institutional dynamics are constrained by past institutional formations, even when these past institutions are no longer relevant. Social Constructivism challenges this theory by upholding that institutions are culturally situated and a reflection of shared ideas rather than material forces as argued by historical institutionalism. Based on Hanna Pitkin’s (1967) four dimensions of representation (formal, descriptive, substantive, and symbolic), I examine how Kazakhstan’s Soviet past and its creation of a Kazakh ethnic-national …
Identification And Functional Analysis Of Alternatively Spliced Isoforms Of Soluble Adenylyl Cyclase In Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells, Xi Chen
Open Access Dissertations
Effective ciliary beating is one of the key factors that regulate mucociliary clearance. Ciliary beat frequency (CBF) is partly regulated by changes in intracellular calcium and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). While transmembrane adenylyl cyclases (tmACs) are well known for their ability to produce cAMP upon activation, soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC) is another source of cAMP production mediated specifically by HCO3-/CO2. It contributes to CBF regulation and the prevention of lung diseases due to mucociliary dysfunction. The three known alternatively spliced isoforms of sAC were identified in mice and rats, but there was no systematic study aimed at identifying additional alternatively …
Transferential Poetics, From Poe To Warhol, Adam Frank
Transferential Poetics, From Poe To Warhol, Adam Frank
Literature
Transferential Poetics presents a method for bringing theories of affect to the study of poetics. Informed by the thinking of Silvan Tomkins, Melanie Klein, and Wilfred Bion, it offers new interpretations of the poetics of four major American artists: Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, Gertrude Stein, and Andy Warhol. The author emphasizes the close, reflexive attention each of these artists pays to the transfer of feeling between text and reader, or composition and audience— their transferential poetics. The book’s historical route from Poe to Warhol culminates in television, a technology and cultural form that makes affect distinctly available to perception. …

Xenopus laevis eggs are used as a biological model system for studying fertilization and early embryonic development in vertebrates. Most methods used for their molecular analysis require elaborate sample preparation including separate protocols for the water soluble and lipid components. In this study, laser ablation electrospray ionization (LAESI), an ambient ionization technique, was used for direct mass spectrometric analysis of X. laevis eggs and early stage embryos up to five cleavage cycles. Single unfertilized and fertilized eggs, their animal and vegetal poles, and embryos through the 32-cell stage were analyzed. Fifty two small metabolite ions, including glutathione, GABA and amino …

Cycling as a mode of travel provides an opportunity for many people to increase their levels of regular physical activity and contribute to their mental and physical health. Heart rate is often used as a means of measuring the intensity and energy expenditure of physical activity. However, heart rate is also linked to emotional factors such as anxiety and fear. Perceptions of risk due to external factors such as other road users and infrastructure may arouse such emotions in urban cyclists. The present study set out to investigate whether or not perceptions of risk among urban cyclists may lead to …

Dancing On Checkers' Grave By Eric Lane, Allison Kump
Dancing On Checkers' Grave By Eric Lane, Allison Kump
Honors Projects
My proposed honors project consists of directing my own, fully-actualized production of Eric Lane’s play Dancing on Checkers’ Grave within the BGSU’s Department of Theatre & Film Elsewhere season. As the director, I must hone in on the play’s relevance to today’s society and shape my storytelling tools to clearly communicate the narrative, establishing a relationship between the performers and the audience.
Dancing on Checkers’ Grave is a play about two very different teenage girls who come to bond over homework, “munchkining,” relationships, and nail polish. Rooted within the text are topics of sexual identity, what it means to be …
Ultrasound-Mediated Optical Imaging And Focusing In Scattering Media, Yuta Suzuki
Ultrasound-Mediated Optical Imaging And Focusing In Scattering Media, Yuta Suzuki
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Because of its non-ionizing and molecular sensing nature, light has been an attractive tool in biomedicine. Scanning an optical focus allows not only high-resolution imaging but also manipulation and therapy. However, due to multiple photon scattering events, conventional optical focusing using an ordinary lens is limited to shallow depths of one transport mean free path (lt'), which corresponds to approximately 1 mm in human tissue.
To overcome this limitation, ultrasonic modulation (or encoding) of diffuse light inside scattering media has enabled us to develop both deep-tissue optical imaging and focusing techniques, namely, ultrasound-modulated optical tomography (UOT) and time-reversed ultrasonically encoded …

Human ovarian cancer is diagnosed in the late, metastatic stages but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. We report a surprising functional link between CD151-α3β1 integrin complexes and the malignancy of serous-type ovarian cancer. Analyses of clinical specimens indicate that CD151 expression is significantly reduced or diminished in 90% of metastatic lesions, while it remains detectable in 58% of primary tumors. These observations suggest a putative tumor-suppressing role of CD151 in ovarian cancer. Indeed, our analyses show that knocking down CD151 or α3 integrin enhances tumor cell proliferation, growth and ascites production in nude mice. These changes are accompanied by …
The Roles Of Gsk-3ss And Apc In Cytoplasmic Dynein Regulation, Feng Gao
The Roles Of Gsk-3ss And Apc In Cytoplasmic Dynein Regulation, Feng Gao
Theses and Dissertations
Dynein is a microtubule minus-end directed molecular motor, participating in a broad range of cellular functions, such as organelle transport, cell migration and mitosis. Dynein dysfunction is linked to many diseases including ALS, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and cancer. The mechanism of dynein regulation is largely unknown. We have provided evidence that glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) directly regulates dynein in both neurons and non-neuronal cells. GSK-3β interacts with and phosphorylates dynein in vitro. Dynein phosphorylation by GSK-3β reduces its interaction with Ndel1, a regulator contributing to dynein force generation. Dynein motility is stimulated both by pharmacological GSK-3β inhibitors …

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) had widespread use in the United States in commercial manufacturing in the United States until the late 1970s. Even though they were banned, measurable amounts can still be found in the environment and food sources. PCB has known effects on altering hormone development and behavior in the species Rattus norvegicus. To determine the most crucial developmental time of exposure to PCB in Sprague-Dawley rat pups, rat pups were exposed to PCB at differing weeks of either gestation period or the first postnatal week. Behavioral tests were performed for the different rat pups, as well as blood …

Compositional Traits In Sorghum Bicolor Characterized By Transcriptome, Ionome And Genome-Wide Association Analysis, Nadia Shakoor
Theses and Dissertations
To address the challenge of global mineral malnutrition, current biofortification research in crop plants aims to improve mineral concentration and micronutrient bioavailablity via genetic and traditional breeding methods. Many staple food crops are also used as biofuels, and the chemical and mineral composition of these energy crops directly affect biomass quality and subsequent energy output. Identification of genes and QTL that impact mineral and compositional traits in the grain and biomass of major cereals, including sorghum, is fundamental to developing breeding and selection methods aimed at increasing bioavailable minerals and improving biofuel suitability and seed nutritional quality. A combinatorial strategy …
Theoretical Investigation Of The Catalytic, Liquid-Phase Hydrodeoxygenation Of Organic Acids And Esters, Sina Behtash
Theoretical Investigation Of The Catalytic, Liquid-Phase Hydrodeoxygenation Of Organic Acids And Esters, Sina Behtash
Theses and Dissertations
With worldwide fossil fuel resources dwindling and greenhouse gas emissions rising, it is urgent to find renewable liquid fuel alternatives from e.g. biomass to meet the world’s growing energy demand. Lipid feedstocks and pyrolysis oils from woody biomass can be utilized for the production of second-generation biofuels via a catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process. The conversion of fatty acids and esters plays an important role in the activity and selectivity of these processes. Understanding the HDO reaction mechanism of organic acids and esters on metal surfaces is a prerequisite for the rational design of new HDO catalysts specifically designed for upgrading …

The African American Male Achievement Dilemma Through The Eyes Of The African American Male Superintendent, J.R. Falor Green
Theses and Dissertations
This research study explores the perspective of African American male superintendents on the African American male achievement dilemma. How do African American male superintendents theorize and respond to the underachievement of African American male students? Do their experiences give them greater insight, and how has this potential insight contributed to the implementation of initiatives that have improved the performance of this subgroup? Three major theoretical perspectives were explored during my review of the literature. Critical Race, Social Reproduction, and Oppositional Culture Theory encompassed the most consistent themes during my research, and helped to situate the study within the broader education …
Metabolic Engineering Of Cyanobacteria For Photosynthetic Production Of Drop-In Liquid Fuels, Bertram Michael Berla
Metabolic Engineering Of Cyanobacteria For Photosynthetic Production Of Drop-In Liquid Fuels, Bertram Michael Berla
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Cyanobacteria are oxygenic phototrophs with great potential as hosts for renewable fuel and chemical production. They grow very quickly (compared with plants) and can use sunlight for energy and CO2 as a carbon source (unlike yeast or E. coli). While cyanobacteria have been engineered to make many chemicals that are native and non-native parts of their metabolism, this work is concerned with the production of heptadecane in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Heptadecane is in a class of natural products produced by all cyanobacteria, but in quantities insufficient for industrialization. Towards this future goal, we have built enabling systems for the …

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) can generate heat when subjected to an alternating magnetic field (AMF). In the European Union, SPIONs actuated by AMF are used in hyperthermia treatment of glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Current data from clinical trials suggest that this therapy improves patient life expectancy, but their effect on healthy brain cells is virtually unknown. Thus, a viability study involving SPIONs subjected to an AMF was carried out on healthy cortical rat astrocytes, the most abundant cell type in the mammalian brain. The cells were cultured with amino silane- or starch-coated SPIONs with or …
Integrating The Arts And Sciences In The Museum Setting, Emily Clare Riggins
Integrating The Arts And Sciences In The Museum Setting, Emily Clare Riggins
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The division between the arts and sciences appears to be deepening in America. As political leaders emphasize STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education in schools, arts education is diminished to make room for STEM courses. Concerned about this phenomenon, many art educators are working to integrate the arts into STEM education through a variety of arts integration efforts. Arts integration not only helps to preserve a place for the arts in the curriculum, it also has been shown to enhance STEM learning.
Arts integration is of special interest to art museum educators who feel that they can provide resources …

Differentiating Self-Reported Imagery Abilities With Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Brian D. Seiler
Differentiating Self-Reported Imagery Abilities With Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Brian D. Seiler
Theses and Dissertations
Motor imagery (MI), a top-down knowledge-driven process involving the deliberate cognitive simulation or rehearsal of an action without engaging in overt physical movements, shares the same neural networks as movement execution improving motor learning and enhancing performance of motor tasks. The capacity to form images is not universal, and is a variable, moderating factor of neural activity impacting intervention effectiveness and distinguishing between individual imagery abilities. Measuring imagery abilities through self-report measures (i.e., MIQ-3 and VMIQ-2) is common, but the importance of behavioral and neuroimaging techniques have also been highlighted. Despite the robustness of these questionnaires, few studies have investigated …
