Haar Wavelet Approach For Numerical Solution Of Two Parameters Singularly Perturbed Boundary Value Problems, Sapna Pandit, Manoj Kumar
Haar Wavelet Approach For Numerical Solution Of Two Parameters Singularly Perturbed Boundary Value Problems, Sapna Pandit, Manoj Kumar
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we proposed an efficient numerical method based on uniform Haar wavelet for the numerical solutions of two parameter singularly perturbed boundary value problems. Such type of problems arise in various field of science and engineering, such as heat transfer problem with large Peclet numbers, Navier-Stokes flows with large Reynolds numbers, transport phenomena in chemistry and biology, chemical reactor theory, aerodynamics, reaction-diffusion process, quantum mechanics, optimal control theory etc. In present study more accurate solutions have been obtained by wavelet decomposition with multiresolution analysis. An extensive amount of error analysis has been carried out to obtain the convergence …

An Improved Unit-Linking Pcnn For Segmentation Of Infrared Insulator Image, Kebin Cui, Baoshu Li, Jinsha Yuan, Ping Wang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
To segment the infrared insulator image efficiently, an improved Unit-linking PCNN algorithm, which makes improvements on both the linking coefficient b and the standard for choosing the best segmented image, is proposed in this paper. The relationship of the gray value of each neuron is used to determine the linking coefficient b and MSE, which consider the relationship between the gray value of the original image and the segmented image, is used to determine the best segmented image. The proposed algorithm is tested on both the standard test images and the aerial infrared images and the results show that the …

An Efficient Gene Selection Technique Based On Fuzzy C-Means And Neighborhood Rough Set, Jiucheng Xu, Tianhe Xu, Lin Sun, Jinyu Ren
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Selecting genes from microarray gene expression datasets has become an important research, because such data typically consist of a large number of genes and a small number of samples. Avoiding information loss, neighborhood mutual information is used to evaluate the relevance between genes in this work. Firstly, an improved Relief feature selection algorithm is proposed to create candidate feature subsets. Then, the cohesion degree of the neighborhood of an object and coupling degree between neighborhoods of objects are defined based on neighborhood mutual information. Furthermore, a new initialization method of cluster centers for the Fuzzy C-means (FCM) algorithm is proposed. …
Maximum Entropy For Image Segmentation Based On An Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization, Chengming Qi
Maximum Entropy For Image Segmentation Based On An Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization, Chengming Qi
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Abstract: Image segmentation is applied widely to image processing and object recognition. Threshold segmentation is a simple and important method in grayscale image segmentation. Information entropy can characterize the grayscale in formation of image and distinguish between the objectives and background. In this paper, we use exponential entropy instead of logarithmic entropy and propose a new multilevel thresholds image segmentation method based on maximum entropy and adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO). This proposed algorithm takes full account of the spatial information and the gray information to decrease the computing quantity. The APSO takes advantage of the characteristics of particle swarm …

Flourishing Rights, Wendy A. Bach
Flourishing Rights, Wendy A. Bach
Scholarly Works
Flourishing Rights reviews Clare Huntington’s Failure to Flourish: How Law Undermines Family Relationships, recently published by the Oxford University Press. This review explores the way that specific issues at the heart of the relationship between poor families and the state affects Huntington’s thesis and proposals. The review largely applauds the book but concludes that a robust form of rights protection, when combined with the impressive policy arguments Huntington marshals, might actually make real the audacious idea that everyone has a right to flourish.

The State As A Person?: Anthropomorphic Personification Vs. Concrete Durational Being, Robert Oprisko Ph.D., Kristopher Kaliher
Journal of International and Global Studies
In “The State as Person in International Theory,” Wendt explores the analysis and comparison of the classic unit of international relations to a human subject. In an unprecedented manner, Wendt takes his comparison to the limit, finding connections between the biological aspects of personhood as well as the social. In this essay, we use a structure similar to Wendt’s but come to different conclusions. Using the works of Searle’s intentionality and Mitzen’s ontological security, among others, we find that the social category of state personhood is determined to be both accurate and helpful for progressing IR theory. We depart from …

Classical And Quasi-Newton Methods For A Meteorological Parameters Prediction Boundary Value Problem, Ioannis Famelis, Georgios Galanis, Matthias Ehrhardt
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We study the numerical solution of a Boundary Value problem for second order quadratic differential equations which arises in the numerical prediction of meteorological parameters. In the present work, we use finite differences and focus on the numerical solution of the resulting nonlinear system. More precisely, we apply classical Newton’s and Quasi-Newton methods paying attention to the special sparse form of the Jacobian matrix and modify appropriately the LU factorization in order to reduce significantly the required floating point operations. Furthermore, we implement and study in depth the behavior of all the proposed procedures in respect of their accuracy, stability …

Women who develop gestational diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance during pregnancy are at substantially increased risk for type 2 diabetes and comorbidities after pregnancy. Little is known about the role of genetic factors and their interactions with environmental factors in determining the transition from gestational diabetes mellitus to overt type 2 diabetes mellitus. These critical data gaps served as the impetus for this Diabetes & Women’s Health study with the overall goal of investigating genetic factors and their interactions with risk factors amenable to clinical or public health interventions in relation to the transition of gestational diabetes mellitus to …

Grades and test scores are the traditional measurement of academic achievement. Quantitative improvements on standardized scores in Math/Science/Language are highly-coveted outcomes for meeting accreditation standards required for institutional program funding. Music and the Fine Arts, difficult to assess by traditional academic achievement measurement, and often devalued as so-called “luxury” subjects, struggle for necessary funding. Showing measureable collateral value to other academic subjects—such as math—in order to justify music program funding is dubious. To objectify the purpose of music education in terms of its influence on other subjects is to overlook aesthetic value. The scholarly literature recognizes an historical tendency to …

Development And Testing Of A Rapid Multiplex Assay For The Identification Of Biological Stains, Kevin M. Legg
Development And Testing Of A Rapid Multiplex Assay For The Identification Of Biological Stains, Kevin M. Legg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While DNA profiling makes it possible to individualize biological stains, the identification of the stain itself can present forensic serologists with a significant challenge. Current antibody- and enzyme activity-based assays used by forensic practitioners for biological stain identification yield only presumptive results. Positive results with non-target body fluids or cross-reactivity with non-human sources has also been well documented. Some tests can consume unacceptable quantities of precious evidence while for some body fluids (vaginal fluid and menstrual blood) there are simply no available tests at all.
This research presented here aims to develop and rigorously test a fast, accurate, and sensitive …
Cavitation In Vial Drop Subjected To Mechanical Shock, Houman Babazadehrokni
Cavitation In Vial Drop Subjected To Mechanical Shock, Houman Babazadehrokni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cavitation is a phenomenon that occurs when the local pressure falls down below the critical pressure. Previous work from the Randolph lab demonstrated that protein aggregates can form when a vial of therapeutic solution is dropped onto a hard surface. The process by which this occurs is most likely shock induced cavitation. During this process, hot spots can be created with temperatures and pressures reaching thousands of Kelvin and hundreds of atmospheres, respectively, leading to degradation of protein therapeutics. This work will extend previous efforts by exploring differences generated by change in vial materials, solutions, drop methods and fill volumes. …

Quality Control And Stress Response In Mammalian Ribosome Biogenesis, Minshi Wang
Quality Control And Stress Response In Mammalian Ribosome Biogenesis, Minshi Wang
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Ribosomes are essential cellular components that translate mRNAs to proteins. The cytoplasmic ribosome in eukaryotes is a large molecular machine composed of 4 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) and ~80 ribosomal proteins (RPs). Ribosome biogenesis is a highly complicated process that involves transcription and processing of rRNA precursors (pre-rRNAs), their proper folding, assembly with RPs, and transport of pre-ribosomal particles from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. Besides rRNAs and RPs, numerous proteins and small RNAs work as trans-acting factors in this intricate process. Surveillance systems act along the entire ribosome synthesis pathway to eliminate defective processing intermediates and promote integrity of the …

Rulers, Rhetoric, And Ray-Guns: A Post Colonial Look At 90'S Alien Invasion Media, Logan Matthew Hudspeth
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis opens discussion on American alien invasion films of the 90s as a self-critique, a reaction to being an imperial power at the end of the Cold War. The alien menace in these films is not the "other" but rather the U.S. itself being the colonizer or conqueror looking to expand its sphere of influence. Furthermore, it discusses how Presidential rhetoric in the films play a role in this postcolonial reading. Specific works studied are: Independence Day (1996), Mars Attacks! (1996), Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998), and The Puppet Masters (1994).
