Development Of A High Precision Quantum Dot Synthesis Method Utilizing A Microfluidic Reactor And In-Line Fluorescence Flow Cell, William Henry Lafferty
Development Of A High Precision Quantum Dot Synthesis Method Utilizing A Microfluidic Reactor And In-Line Fluorescence Flow Cell, William Henry Lafferty
Master's Theses
Quantum dots show great potential for use as spectral converters in solar cells, lighting applications, and biological imaging. These applications require precise control of quantum dot size to maximize performance. The quality, size, and fluorescence of quantum dots depend on parameters that are difficult to control using traditional batch synthesis processes. An alternative, high precision process was developed for the synthesis of cadmium-selenide quantum dots using a microfluidic reactor and fluorescence flow cell. The process required creating separate cadmium and selenium precursors that were then mixed in a nitrogen environment at 17°C. Using an NE-300® syringe pump, the solution …

Fisheries induced evolution (FIE) is hypothesized to cause changes in the life history, physiology and behavior of exploited fish stocks. Most studies evaluating FIE have occurred in exploited marine stocks which offer little opportunity for replication and few unexploited stocks exist for comparison. Inland recreational fisheries, however, offer the opportunity to replicate experiments in multiple systems, and while rare, unexploited populations exist for comparison. We measured the resting metabolic rate of four populations of largemouth bass, two exploited and two unexploited, to evaluate whether patterns of resting metabolic rates conformed to expectations for fisheries induced evolution. This document contains the …
An Optimized Feature Selection Method For Breast Cancer Diagnosis In Digital Mammogram Using Multiresolution Representation, Mohamed Meselhy Eltoukhy, Ibrahima Faye
An Optimized Feature Selection Method For Breast Cancer Diagnosis In Digital Mammogram Using Multiresolution Representation, Mohamed Meselhy Eltoukhy, Ibrahima Faye
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper introduces a method for feature extraction from multiresolution representations (wavelet, curvelet) for classification of digital mammograms. The proposed method selects the features according to its capability to distinguish between different classes. The method starts with both performing wavelet and curvelet transform over mammogram images. The resulting coefficients of each image are used to construct a matrix. Each row in the matrix corresponds to an image. The most significant features, in terms of capabilities of differentiating classes, are selected. The method uses threshold values to select the columns that will maximize the difference between the different classes’representatives. The proposed method is applied …

A New Image Watermarking Scheme Using Multi- Objective Bees Algorithm, Jiann-Shu Lee, Jing-Wein Wang, Kung-Yo Giang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The optimization of watermarked image fidelity and watermark robustness is an attractive research topic in image watermarking. In this paper, we propose a new image watermarking scheme based on multi-objective bees algorithm to promote watermarking robustness as well as fidelity. In contrast with the existing genetic algorithms (GAs) based approaches utilizing single objective optimization, we treat the image watermarking as a multi-objective optimization problem. Based on this new perspective, the inherent conflict existing in image fidelity and watermark robustness for image watermarking can be objectively handled. The experimental study shows that our method indeed outperform the conventional GA-based approaches in …

Cloud Model And Tolerance Granular Space-Based Image Retrieval Methods, Jiucheng Xu, Jinyu Ren, Lin Sun, Tianhe Xu
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In the existing tolerance granular space models, grid points in each layer are established only taking space position into account, which ignore uncertainties of image texture, such as randomness, fuzziness and relevance. As a matter of fact, it is very important to extract grid points for constructing tolerance granular space, which are tolerance granules’ position or center. Therefore, it is very meaningful for the accurate texture feature-description of images to extract grid points well. To address this issue, we firstly apply cloud model to extracting grid points, and establish two new tolerance granular space models. Then, similarity measures based on …
An Exponential Entropy-Based Hybrid Ant Colony Algorithm For Vehicle Routing Optimization, Chengming Qi, Ping Li
An Exponential Entropy-Based Hybrid Ant Colony Algorithm For Vehicle Routing Optimization, Chengming Qi, Ping Li
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Vehicle routing problem(VRP) is important combinatorial optimization problems which have received considerable attention in the last decades. The optimization of vehicle routing problem is a well-known research problem in the logistics distribution. In order to overcome the prematurity of Ant Colony Algorithm (ACA) for logistics distribution routing optimization, a hybrid algorithm combining improved ACA with Iterated Local Search (ILS) is proposed. The proposed algorithm adjusts the pheromone trail to balance the convergence rate and diversification of solutions self-adaptively. The exponential entropy is used to control the path selection and pheromone updating strategy. Combining with ILS is to avoid local best …

Exploring Differences And Finding Connections In Archaeology And History Practice And Teaching In The Livingstone Museum And The University Of Zambia, 1973 To 2016, Francis B. Musonda
Zambia Social Science Journal
This article looks at the way archaeology and history have been practised and taught at the Livingstone Museum, Zambia and the University of Zambia in relation to each other as closely allied disciplines between 1973 and 2016. It identifies some of the areas in which they have either collaborated well, or need to do so, and those that set them apart in their common aim to study the past. The paper has identified a number of grey areas that have tended to be inimical to the advancement of the two institutions in their quest to advance the study of Zambia’s …

Generating Caenorhabditis Elegans Unc-33 Antigens To Be Used For The Synthesis Of Polyclonal Antibodies, Matt Abbott, Jacob Fuller, Mason Howe, Michael Caniglia, Andrea Holgado
SWOSU Journal of Undergraduate Research
UNC-33 and its human homolog, CRMP2 (Collapsin Response Mediator Protein-2), have been demonstrated to be involved in neurodevelopment as well as neurodegenerative disorders, primarily Alzheimer’s Disease. However, the physiology and interactions of these associations are vague. In order to further understand UNC-33/CRMP2, our group decided to use molecular biology and work toward the production of polyclonal antibodies specific to C. elegans UNC-33. To do this, we utilized the GST tag Gene Fusion System and produced two antigens- UNC-33 amino acid 48 to 212 and UNC-33 amino acid 48 to131 (UNC-3348-212 and UNC-3348-131). During this process, parameters were developed for the …

Miracles, Science, Or Both?, Deborah Tyokighir
Student Work
What is a miracle? What is science? Do miracles cease to be exciting when a scientific explanation is found? Does an event, explainable by science, undermine the power of the Divine? This work investigates the tension that we have created between divine action and natural law, using the medieval Eucharist experience and related scientific findings as an example of this tension.

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols
Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols
Sociology
Social scientists are well-trained to observe and chart social trends, but less experienced at presenting scientific findings in formats that can inform social change work. In this article, I propose a new theoretical concept that provides a mechanism by which social science research can be more effectively applied for proactive policy, organizational, and program development. The approach is to use the metaphor of “desire paths” from landscape architecture to show how social scientists can identify and analyze social desire paths that appear on the social structural landscape. Social desire paths usually emerge because existing formal structures do not meet individual …

The Translational Biology Of Remyelination: Past, Present, And Future, Robin J.M. Franklin, Vittorio Gallo
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Amongst neurological diseases, multiple sclerosis (MS) presents an attractive target for regenerative medicine. This is because the primary pathology, the loss of myelin-forming oligodendrocytes, can be followed by a spontaneous and efficient regenerative process called remyelination. While cell transplantation approaches have been explored as a means of replacing lost oligodendrocytes, more recently therapeutic approaches that target the endogenous regenerative process have been favored. This is in large part due to our increasing understanding of (1) the cell types within the adult brain that are able to generate new oligodendrocytes, (2) the mechanisms and pathways by which this achieved, and (3) …

Abstract
The Sun and its solar wind are currently exhibiting extremely low densities and magnetic field strengths, representing states that have never been observed during the space age. The highly abnormal solar activity between cycles 23 and 24 has caused the longest solar minimum in over 80 years and continues into the unusually small solar maximum of cycle 24. As a result of the remarkably weak solar activity, we have also observed the highest fluxes of galactic cosmic rays in the space age and relatively small solar energetic particle events. We use observations from the Cosmic Ray Telescope for the …

Purpose: The emergence of prostate cancer as a major health issue and the absence of curative treatment for metastatic disease requires the development of new treatment modalities. Prostate specific antigen (PSA) and prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) are possible targets for prostate cancer immunotherapy. We have previously shown that PSA and PSMA can be expressed in recombinant bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) strains. Methods: The in vivo immunogenicity of the prostate-specific proteins produced by this recombinant BCG strain were examined by detection of specific antibody responses and delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) responses in mice vaccinated with these strains. These immune responses were compared with …

Calpain mediated cleavage of CDK5 natural precursor p35 causes a stable complex formation of CDK5/p25, which leads to hyperphosphorylation of tau. Thus inhibition of this complex is a viable target for numerous acute and chronic neurodegenerative diseases involving tau protein, including Alzheimer’s disease. Since CDK5 has the highest sequence homology with its mitotic counterpart CDK2, our primary goal was to design selective CDK5/p25 inhibitors targeting neurodegeneration. A novel structure-based virtual screening protocol comprised of e-pharmacophore models and virtual screening workflow was used to identify nine compounds from a commercial database containing 2.84 million compounds. An ATP non-competitive and selective thieno[3,2- …
A Comparison Of Methods For Group Prediction With High Dimensional Data, Holmes Finch
A Comparison Of Methods For Group Prediction With High Dimensional Data, Holmes Finch
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
High dimensional data is the situation in which the number of variables included in an analysis approaches or exceeds the sample size. In the context of group classification, researchers are typically interested in finding a model that can be used to correctly place an individual into their appropriate group; e.g. correctly diagnose individuals with depression. However, when the size of the training sample is small and the number of predictors used to differentiate the groups is larger, standard approaches such as discriminant analysis may not work well. In order to address this issue, statisticians have developed a number of tools …

Optimal Location Design For Prediction Of Spatial Correlated Environmental Functional Data, Mahdi Rasekhi, B. Jamshidi, F. Rivaz
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The optimal choice of sites to make spatial prediction is critical for a better understanding of really spatio-temporal data. It is important to obtain the essential spatio-temporal variability of the process in determining optimal design, because these data tend to exhibit both spatial and temporal variability. Two new methods of prediction for spatially correlated functional data are considered. The first method models spatial dependency by fitting variogram to empirical variogram, similar to ordinary kriging (univariate approach). The second method models spatial dependency by linear model co-regionalization (multivariate approach). The variance of prediction method was chosen as the optimization design criterion. …

A Necessary Condition For The Security Of Coherent- One-Way Quantum Key Distribution Protocol, Mhlambululi Mafu, Adriana Marais, Francesco Petruccione
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The coherent-one-way and the differential-phase-shift protocols are two of the most recent practical quantum key distribution protocols for quantum cryptography. These protocols belong to a class of so-called distributed-phase-reference quantum key distribution protocols. While security proofs for some limited attacks exist, the unconditional security proofs this class of protocol remain unrealised. The existing tools for proving security of protocols against the most general attacks fail to apply to this class of protocol in a straight forward way. One of the necessary conditions for a quantum key distribution protocol to be secure is the presence of noncommuting measurements. In this paper, …

This paper presents a novel approach for the classification of acute leukemia subtypes using image processing and mathematical techniques. The preprocessing phase analyses 376 features from abdnormal leukocytes images. The features or parameters are Leukemia Parameters that helps to lymphoblastic subtypes detection which come from bone marrow images with heterogeneous staining. The second phase imply the robust generalized principal component analysis as segmentation method for data classification into a subspace arrangement with tree dimensions for each plane of lymphoblastic subtype and four dimension for the subspace arrangement. The novel of our proposal states that the two subtypes of acute leukemia …

An Optimization Algorithm For Solving Systems Of Singular Boundary Value Problems, Zaer Abo-Hammour, Omar Abu Arqub, Othman Alsmadi, Shaher Momani
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, an optimization algorithm is presented for solving systems of singular boundary value problems. In this technique, the system is formulated as an optimization problem by the direct minimization of the overall individual residual error subject to the given constraints boundary conditions, and is then solved using continuous genetic algorithm in the sense that each of the derivatives is replaced by an appropriate difference quotient approximation. Two numerical experiments are carried out to verify the mathematical results, and the theoretical statements for the solutions are supported by the results of numerical experiments.Meanwhile, the statistical analysis is provided in …

Some Remarks On The Fractional Sumudu Transform And Applications, Adem Kılıçman, Omer Altun
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this work we study fractional order Sumudu transform. In the development of the definition we use fractional analysis based on the modified Riemann - Liouville derivative, then we name the fractional Sumudu transform. We also establish a relationship between fractional Laplace and Sumudu via duality with complex inversion formula for fractional Sumudu transform and apply new definition to solve fractional differential equations.
