The Talk Of Unwed Adolescent Fathers Of Mexican Origin: A Discourse Analysis, Jose Arturo Jaime Jan 2014

The Talk Of Unwed Adolescent Fathers Of Mexican Origin: A Discourse Analysis, Jose Arturo Jaime

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Since the 1970s, changing family and marriage trends in the United States have led to a dramatic 41% increase in the rate of unwed parents also known as fragile families, i.e., those at high risk of living in poverty and/or disintegrating (McLanahan, Garfinkel, Mincy, & Donahue, 2013, p.3). By 2011, more than 20 million children (28%) lived in biological father-absent homes and one-fourth, or five million, of these children were Hispanic of any race (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). Recent studies suggest a clear disparity in cognitive, behavioral and health outcomes for children who live with single or cohabiting parents when …

Mechanisms To Mitigate Neurodegeneration By Maintaining Mitochondrial Health, Parijat Kabiraj Jan 2014

Mechanisms To Mitigate Neurodegeneration By Maintaining Mitochondrial Health, Parijat Kabiraj

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Cerebral accumulation of amyloidogenic protein aggregates is most frequently observed in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Recent studies showed prion like spreading of beta amyloid (A beta) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and alpha synuclein protein in Parkinson's disease (PD) brain. Failure or compromise to the chaperone activity of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is also been reported as a major factor of aggregate formation. Nitrosative stress mediated S-nitrosylation (SNO) of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), a housekeeping oxidoreductase, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of sporadic PD and AD. Mitochondrial dysfunction, leading to elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated …

Glycine Transporter 2: Expression And Interactions In The Central Nervous System., Shweta Lavania Jan 2014

Glycine Transporter 2: Expression And Interactions In The Central Nervous System., Shweta Lavania

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Glycine is an important inhibitory neurotransmitter that is localized in the caudal areas of the nervous system and plays an important role in mediating many important functions related to breathing, spinal reflexes, nociception etc. Termination of neurotransmission is achieved by the re-uptake of glycine back into the pre- synaptic neuron and neighboring glial cells by the two glycine transporters namely Glycine transporter 1 (GlyT1) and Glycine transporter 2 (GlyT2). These transporters play an essential role in regulating glycinergic inhibition in the central nervous system by controlling the duration and intensity of neurotransmission and therefore the efficacy of synaptic inhibition as …

P90/Cip2a Regulates Lung Cancer Cell Proliferation And Cell Apoptosis Via The Akt Signaling Pathway, Ningjing Lei

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Cancerous inhibitor of PP2A (CIP2A) is an intracellular endogenous protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) inhibitor with oncogenic activities. Initially identified as a tumor-associated antigen (TAA) in gastric and liver cancer patients, CIP2A was overexpressed in a variety of cancer types. And the overexpression of CIP2A in cancer cell is associated with increased cell proliferation and decreased cell apoptosis. However, the mechanism of CIP2A in cancer progression is still poorly understood. Here, we reported the evidence that CIP2A can regulate AKT phosphorylation at S473 under growth factor stimulation and our results also showed that CIP2A might regulate cell proliferation and cell apoptosis …

Characterization Of Membrane Interaction Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Esat-6, Yue Ma Jan 2014

Characterization Of Membrane Interaction Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Esat-6, Yue Ma

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) targets alveolar macrophages and has a high tolerance to the macrophage's antimicrobial effectors, such as low pH, reactive oxygen species, and reactive nitrogen species. It has been reported and widely accepted that Mtb disarms macrophages through arresting the normal maturation process of the phagosomes. Inhibition of phagosome-lysosome fusion and phagosome acidification is an effective survival strategy at the early stage of infection. This behavior allows Mtb to remain and replicate within the phagosomes of macrophages. At the later stage of infection, the pathogen translocates from the phagolysosomal compartments into the cytosol of host cells by phagolysosomal rupture. …

Understanding The Chemical Gymnastics Of Enzyme-Catalyzed 1’-1 And 1’-3 Triterpene Linkages, Stephen A. Bell

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Squalene synthase (SS) is an essential enzyme in eukaryotic systems responsible for an important branch point in isoprenoid metabolism that leads to sterol formation. The mechanistic complexity of SS has made it a difficult enzyme to study. The green alga Botryococcus braunii race B possesses several squalene synthase-like (SSL) enzymes that afford a unique opportunity to study the complex mechanism of triterpene biosynthesis. SSL-1 catalyzes presqualene diphosphate (PSPP) formation, which can either be converted to squalene by SSL-2 or botryococcene by SSL-3. A rationally designed mutant study of B. braunii squalene synthase (BbSS) and SSL-3 was conducted to understand structure-function …

Understanding The Role Of Membrane Localized Ugt80b1 Encoding For Udp-Glucose: Sterol Glucosyltransferase In Plant Development, Meera Nair Jan 2014

Understanding The Role Of Membrane Localized Ugt80b1 Encoding For Udp-Glucose: Sterol Glucosyltransferase In Plant Development, Meera Nair

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Sterols have been identified as major components of membrane lipids that are part of specialized membrane domains necessary for organizing events such as polar protein targeting and signal transduction in plants, fungi and animals. However a common modification of sterols is the addition of sugar moieties via glycosylation abundantly found in plants. An exact physiological role for such diversification of sterols in plants is still unknown. Using reverse genetics and transcriptomics we show that UDP-glucose: sterol glucosyltransferase encoded by UGT80B1 is necessary for correct epidermal patterning in Arabidopsis root. Patterning of hair cells (trichoblasts) and non-hair cells (atrichoblasts) in the …

Coronavirus Proteases As Therapeutic Targets: Development Of Biosensors To Detect Inhibition Of Protease Activity And Separation Of The Multiple Functions Of Coronavirus Papain-Like Proteases, Andrew Kilianski

Dissertations

Coronaviruses are important human pathogens and have the potential to severely impact public health on an international scale. The emergence of SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV highlight the need for research to identify antivirals and vaccines against coronaviruses. To develop therapeutics against current and potentially emergent coronaviruses, I utilized two approaches targeting the proteases encoded within all coronaviruses. The papain-like protease and 3C-like protease of coronaviruses are responsible for cleaving viral polyproteins early during infection, and this step is required for viral replication. To quantitatively assess the inhibition by small-molecule compounds on MERS-CoV protease activity, I developed a luciferase-based biosensor to monitor …

The Natural Complexity Of Patent Eligibility, Jacob S. Sherkow Jan 2014

The Natural Complexity Of Patent Eligibility, Jacob S. Sherkow

Articles & Chapters

It has long been assumed that the doctrine of patent eligibility’s prohibition of patents on “laws of nature,” “natural phenomena,” and “products of nature” rests on legalistic interpretations of those terms. But there is good reason to doubt this assumption. Since the doctrine’s inception, the Supreme Court has yet to provide any framework, formula, or factors explaining these “natural” terms. Rather, the Court has increasingly fixated on a list of scientific tropes, such as gravity, the heat of the Sun, and extracted metals, that it believes are true examples of “natural laws,” “phenomena,” and “products.”

An actual examination of scientific …

Preliminary Injunctions Post-Mayo And Myriad, Jacob S. Sherkow Jan 2014

Preliminary Injunctions Post-Mayo And Myriad, Jacob S. Sherkow

Articles & Chapters

The Supreme Court's recent interest in patentable subject matter has had several, unexpected downstream effects on preliminary injunctions in patent disputes.

The Supreme Court has recently expressed increased interest in patent eligibility, or patentable subject matter, the doctrine that limits the types of inventions eligible for patenting. Its two decisions, Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories, Inc., in 2012, and Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc., in 2013, represented the first broad restrictions on patentable subject matter in over thirty years. And later this term, the Court will decide yet another patent eligibility case: Alice Corp. v. CLS …
