Background: Cullins belong to a family of scaffold proteins that assemble multi-subunit ubiquitin ligase complexes to recruit protein substrates for ubiquitination via unique sets of substrate adaptor, such as Skp1 or Elongin B, and a substrate-binding protein with a conserved protein-protein interacting domain, such as leucine-rich repeats (LRR), a WD40 domain, or a zinc-finger domain. In the case of the Cullin3 (Cul3), it forms a BTB-Cul3-Rbx1 (BCR) ubiquitin ligase complex where it is believed that a BTB domain-containing protein performs dual functions where it serves as both the substrate adaptor and …
An Investigation Of The Language And Communication Characteristics Observed In Children With Smith-Magenis Syndrome, Anna Hesson
An Investigation Of The Language And Communication Characteristics Observed In Children With Smith-Magenis Syndrome, Anna Hesson
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This speech-language pathology study explores the communication characteristics exhibited in children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS), a recently identified genetic disorder arising from the deletion or mutation of part of the 17th chromosome. This qualitative study examines the speech and language needs exhibited by children with SMS through parent surveys and interviews, as well as current speech language pathology intervention strategies being utilized. It also observes the effectiveness and validity of the Language Use Inventory (LUI) as a reliable measure for identifying speech and language delays, which was analyzed in comparison to the MacArthur Bates Communicative Development Inventory (CDI). Results identified …
Dysmenorrhea And Body Mass Index, Marisa Richard
Dysmenorrhea And Body Mass Index, Marisa Richard
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological complaint among women, one that costs the U.S. economy approximately $2 billion in lost productivity each year. The present observational study examined the correlation of BMI and diagnoses of dysmenorrhea in a large sample of women ages 18-40 seen in an outpatient setting over the course of one year at a large health system in southeast Michigan. Although there were no statistically significant differences in the probability of dysmenorrhea among women of different BMI groups, the trending information seemed to suggest that dysmenorrhea is not influenced by BMI categories per se, but by extremes in …
Modeling Of An Upper Midwest Forest Boundary Layer And Vehicle Indoor Air Quality, Phillip Stratton
Modeling Of An Upper Midwest Forest Boundary Layer And Vehicle Indoor Air Quality, Phillip Stratton
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The key to understanding tropospheric chemistry begins with the hydroxyl and hydroperoxy radicals. Recent research suggests that there is still considerable uncertainty in our understanding of the sources of these radicals and their role as sinks. The work detailed in this thesis describes a computational approach to modeling the hydroxyl and hydroperoxy radicals in a forest environment and attempts to shed further light on the radical budget in a typical Northern Hardwood forest. Additionally, research was conducted with United States Council for Automotive Research in collaboration with Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler to develop a global standard for vehicle indoor …

In December of 2012, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science & Technology (PCAST) issued a report to the President on Agricultural Preparedness and the Agriculture Research Enterprise. The PCAST report recognizes the long-term history of public investment in agricultural research. The report also recognized significant private investment into agricultural research. Significantly, the report is adamant that the agricultural research enterprise is not prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The report cited two reasons:
- too little competitive research and
- an imbalance of research priorities between private and public funding sources.
This report addresses the latter issue.

Endogenous Ros Levels In C. Elegans Under Exogenous Stress Support Revision Of Oxidative Stress Theory Of Life-History Tradeoffs, Samson W. Smith, Leigh C. Latta Iv, Dee R. Denver, Suzanne Estes
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: The oxidative stress theory of life-history tradeoffs states that oxidative stress caused by damaging free radicals directly underpins tradeoffs between reproduction and longevity by altering the allocation of energetic resources between these tasks. We test this theory by characterizing the effects of exogenous oxidative insult and its interaction with thermal stress and diet quality on a suite of life-history traits and correlations in Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes. We also quantify demographic aging rates and endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in live animals.
Results: Our findings indicate a tradeoff between investment in reproduction and antioxidant defense (somatic maintenance) consistent with …

Experimental Analysis Of Nest-Site Choice And Its Relationship To Nest Success In An Open-Cup–Nesting Passerine, Sarah Cancellieri, Michael T. Murphy
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Nest placement presumably reflects selection for secure sites to minimize failure. Most tests of this hypothesis, however, have failed to support it. We used artificial nests (ARTs) to experimentally evaluate nest-site-choice behavior by an open-cup–nesting bird, the Eastern Kingbird (Tyrannus tyrannus). In 2010 and 2011, we placed ARTs in trees in the riparian zone at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon, USA, to test whether (1) characteristics describing the physical location in trees of used and unused ARTs differed, (2) used ART sites more closely resembled naturally chosen sites, (3) successful natural nests (NATs) and successful ARTs were similarly …

The Digital Commons platform for institutional repositories provides a three-tiered taxonomy of academic disciplines for each item submitted to the repository. Since faculty and departmental administrators across campuses are encouraged to submit materials to the institutional repository themselves, they must also assign disciplines or subject categories for their own work. The expandable drop-down menu of about 1,000 categories is easy to use, and facilitates the growth of the institutional repository and access to the materials through the Internet.

Objective- This study presents inter-subject models of scalp-recorded electroencephalographic (sEEG) event-related potentials (ERPs) using intracranially recorded ERPs from electrocorticography and stereotactic depth electrodes in the hippocampus, generally termed as intracranial EEG (iEEG).
Approach- The participants were six patients with medically-intractable epilepsy that underwent temporary placement of intracranial electrode arrays to localize seizure foci. Participants performed one experimental session using a brain-computer interface matrix spelling paradigm controlled by sEEG prior to the iEEG electrode implantation, and one or more identical sessions controlled by iEEG after implantation. All participants were able to achieve excellent spelling accuracy using sEEG, four of the participants …

Investigating The Role Of Dachshund Homolog 1 (Dach1) And Mir-200b In Group 4 Medulloblastoma Pathogenesis, Courtney George
Theses : Honours
Medulloblastoma is the most common malignant childhood brain tumour, and the most significant cause of childhood cancer-related mortality. Recently four core molecular medulloblastoma sub-groups have been identified, with distinct pathogenesis and responses to therapies. Current therapies, do not account for this molecular variation, and many patients may receive inappropriate treatment. To address this, targeted therapies for each molecular sub-group would be ideal. Unfortunately, for the more aggressive Group 3 and Group 4 subgroups, the underlying mechanisms of pathogenesis remain poorly understood. The current challenge is to identify the key tumour suppressors or oncogenes involved in Group 3 and Group 4 …

Whores And The Law: A Case Study Of The Sexual Double Standard And The Contagious Diseases Acts In Mid-Nineteenth Century England, Alexandra Wallis
Theses : Honours
This thesis examines how the sexual double standard in mid-nineteenth century England disempowered women and female prostitutes through the Contagious Diseases Acts of the 1860s. The Acts were created in an attempt to lower venereal disease among the soldiers in the British army. The method for this was to target prostituted women suspected of being infected and have them examined after which they could be interned in a lock hospital for three to nine months. Radical feminism has done much to highlight the harm experienced by women in prostitution. Thus using radical feminism, in particular the theoretical perspective of Catharine …

Examining The Appeal And Ascribed Meanings Of Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam) Use By Males: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Kathryn V. Hogan
Theses : Honours
Men are commonly and consistently underrepresented in global depression rates, however figure predominantly in rates for substance abuse and suicide. It has been suggested that men’s under-utilisation of mental health services accounts for the discrepancy between the genders and that hegemonic masculine stereotypes have created a barrier for males in seeking help for mood disorders. The use of Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) has been expanding globally, with research showing in some instances of self-diagnosed depression and anxiety, CAM is being utilised more often than mainstream health care services. The present study explored the personal meanings of males who currently …

This article contains a list some of the key cases decided in the state and federal courts of New Mexico with very brief descriptions of the rulings. The finalized cases have been arranged by topic. This chapter is intended to be a quick and handy reference guide and not a thorough summary of the facts and law of each case. This year we have also included a list of water law statutes.
Water For New Mexico Rivers, Beth Bardwell, Adrian Oglesby
Water For New Mexico Rivers, Beth Bardwell, Adrian Oglesby
Water Matters!
The Rio Grande, the Pecos, the Gila, the San Juan, the Canadian—New Mexico’s rivers are synonymous with the state’s culture and natural heritage. New Mexicans overwhelmingly care about the health of the state’s rivers and that includes flows to support fish and river dependent wildlife. Rivers, wetlands, and riparian areas comprise a very small part of our landscape—a mere 1 percent. This 1 percent plays an essential role in renewing the state’s water supply for its two million residents; for sustaining the state’s second largest industry—tourism; for producing food and fiber; and for sustaining New Mexico’s web of life. Eighty …
Inter-Basin Water Transfers, Anne Minard
Inter-Basin Water Transfers, Anne Minard
Water Matters!
Inter-basin water transfers move water from one watershed to another. As droughts constrict the availability of water, and cities grow larger and thirstier, such transfers are increasingly being eyed as a solution. Although inter-basin transfers usually do not increase the overall availability of water in a state, they can move water to where it is needed most. Some of the main proponents of inter-basin transfers are pro-growth city and state governments as the re-allocation of water across watersheds allows for flexibility in planning for future growth.

Neutrosophic Principle Of Interconvertibility Matter-Energy Information, Florentin Smarandache, Stefan Vladutescu
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
The research aims to reveal and prove the thesis of the neutral and convertibility relationship between constituent constructive elements of the universe: matter, energy and information. The approach perspective is a computationally-communicative neutrosophic one. We configure a coherent and cohesive ideation line. Matter, energy and information are fundamental elements of the world. Among them, there is an inextricable multiple, elastic and evolutionary connection. The elements are defined by the connections between them. Our hypothesis is that the relationship between matter, energy and information is a neutral one. This relationship is not required by the evidence. At this level, it does …
Law Of Included Multiple-Middle & Principle Of Dynamic Neutrosophic Opposition, Florentin Smarandache
Law Of Included Multiple-Middle & Principle Of Dynamic Neutrosophic Opposition, Florentin Smarandache
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In this book the author pledges for the generalization of the Lupasco-Nicolescu’s Law of Included Middle [A, nonA, and a third value T which resolves their contradiction at another level of reality] to the Law of Included Multiple-Middle [A, antiA, and neutA, which is split into a multitude of neutralities between A and antiA, such as neutA1, neutA2, etc.]. The value (i.e. neutrality or indeterminacy related to A) actually comprises the included middle value.
Further, similarly to the extension from dialectics to neutrosophy, the author extends the Principle of Dynamic Opposition [opposition between A and antiA] …
Estimation Of Suspended-Sediment Concentration Using Instream Turbidity As A Surrogate In The Middle Rio Grande, New Mexico, Jeb E. Brown
Estimation Of Suspended-Sediment Concentration Using Instream Turbidity As A Surrogate In The Middle Rio Grande, New Mexico, Jeb E. Brown
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The collection of suspended-sediment concentration data is costly and time consuming, and poses risks to field personnel, yet many managers and scientists require these data. Turbidity is an optical property of the clarity of water which, if correlated to suspended-sediment concentration, can produce timely, high resolution data at significantly reduced cost. The correlation of suspended-sediment and turbidity has been proven in a number of streams, but the success is site specific and limited by changing variables such as sediment particle size, sediment color, and presence of organic and biological material, among other factors. This study determines the ability of turbidity …
Comparison Of Electrofishing Fish Surveys And Angler Observation On Three Reaches Of The Upper Rio Grande, Barry Weinstock
Comparison Of Electrofishing Fish Surveys And Angler Observation On Three Reaches Of The Upper Rio Grande, Barry Weinstock
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The purpose of fish population studies is to better understand the functional relations between life stages, abundances, and spatial distributions of fish populations in the upper Rio Grande and its tributaries. Taos Field Office, New Mexico, has managed an electrofishing fish population program since 2004 for seven reaches of the Rio Grande. Managers are interested in actual angler catches and satisfaction, and often use angler surveys to gather this data. This project compared two methods of gathering data about fish populations; electrofishing and angler questionnaires. Both have deficiencies in that they collect different types of data. The intent is to …
Past, Present, Future: The Evolution Of A Wetland Treatment System In Dutchman Canyon On Vermejo Park Ranch, Zoe Isaacson
Past, Present, Future: The Evolution Of A Wetland Treatment System In Dutchman Canyon On Vermejo Park Ranch, Zoe Isaacson
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The purpose of this research was to track the evolution of a constructed wetland system through time while taking into consideration anthropogenic perturbations to the system. It was accomplished by reviewing 30 years-worth of literature associated with the project site, gleaning relevant information, and then synthesizing the information to form a complete evolutionary timeline. In August 2012 a wetland was constructed using water from the evaporation ponds. The Dutchman Canyon wetland, a continuous flow, free surface wetland, was thus formed. The wetland was intended to passively treat poor-quality mine seepage and impart an improved wetland habitat for a diversity fauna …

Inundation Patterns And Their Effect On The Physical And Hydraulic Properties Of Floodplain Soils In The Middle Rio Grande Floodplain, Sophie J. Stauffer
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The surface of the floodplain serves as a vadose zone boundary where water infiltrates, evaporates, or returns to the river, and sediments accumulate or are eroded. The discharge of the Middle Rio Grande has been altered by the construction of Cochiti Dam and the implementation of levees. Hydraulic connectivity in the Middle Rio Grande floodplain is perhaps most apparent at a small local wetland and a low-lying trough with a high water table capable of causing seeping floods. The objective of this study was to determine if inundation patterns impact the hydraulic and physical properties of floodplain soils. A study …

Metabolic syndrome, diabetes and diabetes complications pose a growing medical challenge worldwide, accentuating the need of safe and effective strategies for their clinical management. Here we present preclinical evidence that the sorbitol derivative meglumine (N-methyl-D-glucamine) can safely protect against several features of metabolic syndrome and diabetes, as well as elicit enhancement in muscle stamina. Meglumine is a compound routinely used as an approved excipient to improve drug absorption that has not been ascribed any direct biological effects in vivo. Normal mice (SV129) administered 18 mM meglumine orally for six weeks did not display any gastrointestinal or other observable adverse effects, …
A First-Principles Computational Study Of Structural And Elastic Properties Of Zno, Jeevake Attapattu, Changfeng Chen
A First-Principles Computational Study Of Structural And Elastic Properties Of Zno, Jeevake Attapattu, Changfeng Chen
McNair Poster Presentations
The purpose of this study is to determine structural and mechanical properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) using first-principles computational methods. ZnO is a semiconductor widely used in many electronic and optical applications. ZnO is also economically and environmentally desirable – first, both the constituent elements are abundant on Earth and therefore inexpensive for large-scale applications; second, it is non- toxic. The most significant contribution of this study is the simulations of the high-pressure phases. These high-pressure simulations are important because the rock salt phase of ZnO obtained at high pressure can be recovered at ambient pressure, and this new structural …

Within-Season Nest Reuse By Mountain Plovers (Charadrius Montanus) In Eastern Colorado, Lani T. Stinson, Victoria J. Dreitz
Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications
The Mountain Plover (Charadrius montanus) is a declining migratory shorebird that nests on shortgrass prairies across the western Great Plains. This ground-nesting species exhibits an uncommon split-clutch mating system, in which each member of a pair simultaneously incubates a nest and uniparental care continues throughout brood-rearing. We report on an observation of within-season nest reuse in this species. To our knowledge, this report includes the first documented occurrence of 2 different Mountain Plovers using the same nest cup in the same breeding season. Nest reuse could represent a time- and energy-saving strategy for renesting individuals.
