An Analysis Of Swift Fox (Vulpes Velox) Occupancy On The Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Montana, Adriann Michelle Killsnight

All Master's Theses

The swift fox (Vulpes velox) is a small can.id native to the short-grass prairies of the Great Plains region of the United States and Canada. Swift foxes once occupied areas of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and the southern regions of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, including the Northern Cheyenne Reservation (NCR) in southeastern, Montana. Since the arrival of European settlers to the prairie region in the late 1800s through the early 1900s, swift fox distribution or been reduced and populations have substantially declined or completely eliminated in some areas due …

The Effects Of Sugar Substitutes On The Gut Microbiota Of Mice, Katie A. Lantau Jan 2014

The Effects Of Sugar Substitutes On The Gut Microbiota Of Mice, Katie A. Lantau

All Master's Theses

Obesity has become an ever increasing global problem. This has caused people to turn to sugar substitutes, no calorie sweeteners, to reduce their caloric intake. However, recent studies have shown that it is not just caloric intake that can affect weight, but also the diversity of the bacteria in the gut (Turnbaugh et al., 2009). It has been shown that an increased Firmicutes:Bacteroidetes ratio and an overall decrease in microbial diversity leads to an obesity associated gut microbiome (Turnbaugh et al., 2009; Ley et al., 2005). The purpose of this study was to determine if two of the most popular …

A Mathematical Model Of Collagen Lattice Contraction, J. C. Dallon, Emily J. Evans, H Paul Erhlich Jan 2014

A Mathematical Model Of Collagen Lattice Contraction, J. C. Dallon, Emily J. Evans, H Paul Erhlich

Faculty Publications

Two mathematical models for fibroblast-collagen interaction are proposed which reproduce qualitative features of fibroblast populated collagen lattice contraction in time. Both models are force based and model the cells as individual entities with discrete attachment sites however the collagen lattice is modeled differently for each model. In the collagen lattice model the lattice is more interconnected and formed by triangulating nodes to form the fibrous structure. In the collagen fiber model the nodes are not triangulated, are less interconnected, and the collagen fibers are modeled as a string of nodes. Both models suggest that the overall increase in stress of …

Mother–Infant Interactions In Free-Ranging Rhesus Macaques: Relationships Between Physiological And Behavioral Variables, Dario Maestripieri, Christy L. Hoffman, George M. Anderson, C. Sue Carter, J. Dee Higley Jan 2014

Mother–Infant Interactions In Free-Ranging Rhesus Macaques: Relationships Between Physiological And Behavioral Variables, Dario Maestripieri, Christy L. Hoffman, George M. Anderson, C. Sue Carter, J. Dee Higley

Faculty Publications

Studies of mother–infant relationships in nonhuman primates have increasingly attempted to understand the neuroendocrine bases of interindividual variation in mothering styles and the mechanisms through which early exposure to variable mothering styles affects infant behavioral development. In this study of free-ranging rhesus macaques on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, we aimed to: 1) compare lactating and nonlactating females to investigate whether lactation is associated with changes in plasma cortisol, prolactin and oxytocin, as well as changes in CSF levels of serotonin and dopamine metabolites (5-HIAA and HVA); 2) examine the extent to which interindividual variation in maternal physiology is associated with …

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie Jan 2014

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie

Faculty Publications

Studies have found that Mormons and non-Mormons in Utah exhibit significant linguistic differences. We break this down further by investigating whether there are also differences between Mormons who actively participate in the religion and those who do not, and find significant differences with a medium or larger effect size between the groups for multiple variables. We conclude that when investigating the linguistic correlates of religious affiliation in a community, it is vital to elicit not just respondents’ religious affiliations, but also their level of participation within that religion.

The Influence Of Pornography On Sexual Scripts And Hooking Up Among Emerging Adults In College, Scott Braithwaite, Gwen Coulson, Krista Keddington, Frank D. Fincham

Faculty Publications

The explosive growth in access to the Internet has led to a commensurate increase in the availability, anonymity, andaffordabilityofpornography.Anemergingbodyofresearch has shown associations between pornography and certain behaviors and attitudes; yet, how pornography actually influences these outcomes has not been documented. In two studies (Study 1N=969; Study 2N=992) we examined the hypothesis that pornography influences potentially risky sexual behavior (hooking up) among emerging adults via sexual scripts. Our results demonstrate that more frequent viewing of pornography is associated with a higher incidence of hooking up and a higher number of unique hook up partners. We replicated these effects both cross-sectionally and …

“And It Came To Pass . . .”: The Sociopolitical Events In The Book Of Mormon Leading To The Eighteenth Year Of The Reign Of The Judges, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap, Daniel Belnap, Dan Belnap Jan 2014

“And It Came To Pass . . .”: The Sociopolitical Events In The Book Of Mormon Leading To The Eighteenth Year Of The Reign Of The Judges, Dan Belnap, Daniel L. Belnap, Daniel Belnap, Dan Belnap

Faculty Publications

The period from the end of the seventeenth year of the reign of the judges to the beginning of the nineteenth year was a particularly unstable time in the history of the Nephite people. The amount of text Mormon devotes to it reveals the importance of this time period in their history. The crises that emerged during this time affected every Nephite, but they did not arise out of a vacuum. Instead, a number of prior social forces were at work and created an environment from which the tensions could find full form. This paper focuses on three primary forces: …

Preventing Childhood Obesity: A Mixed Methods Study Into The Perceptions Of African Americans In A Rural Community, Dayna S. Alexander Jan 2014

Preventing Childhood Obesity: A Mixed Methods Study Into The Perceptions Of African Americans In A Rural Community, Dayna S. Alexander

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Preventing childhood obesity is a global priority due to adverse health risks and financial burdens. With childhood obesity rates stabilizing it is difficult to determine which factors alone (i.e., genetic, environmental, behavioral, or demographic) increase susceptibility to childhood obesity. Parents influence childhood obesity risk factors through their parenting styles and behaviors. Social behavioral theories and public health evidence demonstrate including parents in childhood obesity efforts could assist in reducing childhood obesity rates. The objective of this study was to assess perceptions of childhood obesity among African Americans with children enrolled in a rural elementary school in the Deep South. The …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Dermacentor is a recently evolved genus of hard ticks (Family Ixodiae) that includes 36 known species worldwide. Despite the importance of Dermacentor species as vectors of human and animal disease, the systematics of the genus remain largely unresolved. This study focuses on phylogenetic relationships of the eight North American Nearctic Dermacentor species: D. albipictus, D. variabilis, D. occidentalis, D. halli, D. parumapertus, D. hunteri, and D. andersoni, and the recently re-established species D. kamshadalus, as well as two of the Neotropical Dermacentor species D. nitens and D. dissimilis (both formerly Anocentor). We sequenced portions of the mitochondrial …

Water And Nutrient Reuse Within Closed Hydroponic Systems, Emerson Christie Jan 2014

Water And Nutrient Reuse Within Closed Hydroponic Systems, Emerson Christie

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Currently, little research exists on the maintenance of individual nutrient balance within the nutrient solutions of closed hydroponic systems and how this maintenance may result in reductions in water and nutrient consumption. In this study, a nutrient solution management procedure was developed to maintain outputs while minimizing inputs. Lactuca sativa (lettuce) crops were grown in six closed hydroponic systems utilizing the nutrient film technique. Electrical conductivity was used as the primary indicator of nutrient solution quality and determined if the nutrient solution was discarded and replaced (control systems) or restored (test systems). Restorations in test systems were made individually to …

Retention Pathways For African American Males, Thaddeus L. Shubert Jan 2014

Retention Pathways For African American Males, Thaddeus L. Shubert

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a dropout prevention intervention on attitudes toward education among African American males in a rural alternative school in southeast Georgia as a means of understanding retention pathways for this population of students. The researcher approach to retention personified the slogan “Think Globally, Act Locally” by examining the nationwide dropout rate in the United States and implementing a dropout prevention program in a rural Georgia county. African American males have an alarmingly high attrition rate at the middle school, high school, and college levels and so research on how to …

Phenotypic Variation In Native North American And Invasive Chinese Populations Of Plantago Virginica, Teresa E. Popp Jan 2014

Phenotypic Variation In Native North American And Invasive Chinese Populations Of Plantago Virginica, Teresa E. Popp

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Alien plant species can cause significant economic and biological destruction by invading new environments and outcompeting native species. Through experimental research, the mechanisms by which these species invade can be better understood and applied to their management. Plantago virginica is a perennial herb, native to North America that has recently invaded China. It has been known to reduce crop growth and harbor diseases in the introduced range. A common garden study was conducted at the Georgia Southern University greenhouse, comparing twenty populations of P. virginica from both the native North American and invasive Chinese ranges. I examined if there were …

Cellular Coping Mechanisms To Hypoxia In The Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus) Brain, Kelly Heino Jan 2014

Cellular Coping Mechanisms To Hypoxia In The Longhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus Octodecemspinosus) Brain, Kelly Heino

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The loss of neurological function due to hypoxia remains to be a challenge in many species due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of cellular responses. To investigate cellular responses and survival strategies of the brain during hypoxia and post-hypoxia recovery in a moderate hypoxia-tolerant species, with the hopes of identifying possible therapeutic remedies, thirty Longhorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus octodecimspinosus, were challenged with acute hypoxia (40% O2 saturation for 1 h) and twelve additional sculpin were used as controls (~90% O2 saturation). Fish were sampled at each of the following time points: control/normoxic conditions (T=0 h); hypoxic conditions …

Epistasis In Predator-Prey Relationships, Iuliia Inozemtseva Jan 2014

Epistasis In Predator-Prey Relationships, Iuliia Inozemtseva

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Epistasis is the interaction between two or more genes to control a single phenotype. We model epistasis of the prey in a two-locus two-allele problem in a basic predator- prey relationship. The resulting model allows us to examine both population sizes as well as genotypic and phenotypic frequencies. In the context of several numerical examples, we show that if epistasis results in an undesirable or desirable phenotype in the prey by making the particular genotype more or less susceptible to the predator or dangerous to the predator, elimination of undesirable phenotypes and then genotypes occurs.

The GNMW contains several sub-models including the new modified Weibull (NMW), generalized modified Weibull (GMW), modified Weibull (MW), Weibull (W) and exponential (E) distributions, just to mention a few. The class of WPIW distributions contains several models such as: length-biased, hazard and reverse hazard proportional inverse Weibull, proportional inverse Weibull, inverse Weibull, inverse exponential, inverse Rayleigh, and Frechet distributions as special cases. Included …

Water Column Ammonium Concentration And Salinity Influence Nitrogen Uptake And Growth Of Spartina Alterniflora, Rachel Mactavish Jan 2014

Water Column Ammonium Concentration And Salinity Influence Nitrogen Uptake And Growth Of Spartina Alterniflora, Rachel Mactavish

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Salt marsh macrophytes, such as Spartina alterniflora, play a critical role in uptake and transformation of inorganic nitrogen before it reaches coastal waters, thereby reducing the potential for eutrophication. Although nitrogen availability typically limits S. alterniflora growth, it may be possible to exceed the nitrogen uptake capacity of S. alterniflora. Increasing either nitrogen concentrations or salinity are key factors regulating S. alterniflora nitrogen uptake. Investigating the effects of nutrients and salinity on S. alterniflora is important given that increases in inorganic nitrogen supply to surface waters from agriculture and urbanization occur simultaneously with freshwater withdrawals that reduce flow and increase …

Adult Attachment And Emotion Identification: A Cognitive Evaluation, Jennifer F. Barron Jan 2014

Adult Attachment And Emotion Identification: A Cognitive Evaluation, Jennifer F. Barron

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Whether adult or infant, attachment bonds aid in the development of beliefs about oneself and others (Collins & Read, 1990; Hazen & Shaver, 1987). Additionally, attachment seems to play a vital role in human development, communication, emotion recognition and comprehension, and the development of appropriate mental representations of emotional experiences (Denham et al., 2002; Greg & Howe, 2001; Raikes & Thompson, 2006). Because attachment is considered a somewhat stable trait, it seems logical that the importance of emotional experiences would not be limited to childhood, and would be important in establishing and maintaining healthy adult relationships (Kerr, Melley, Travea, & …

An Investigation Of Sensitivity Of An F Test In Locating Change Points In Linear Regression, Jing Sun Jan 2014

An Investigation Of Sensitivity Of An F Test In Locating Change Points In Linear Regression, Jing Sun

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Change point is a statistic phenomenon, which has many direct applications in climatology, bioinformatics, finance, oceanography and medical imaging. In this thesis, we investigate the sensitivity of the F-test for detecting change points in linear regression, using a two-phase linear regression model. it offers an effective method to detect "undocumented" change points using a form of an F-test. Using simulated data, we explore its sensitivity and accuracy with respect t different parameters in the model.

The Effects Of Beaver Dams On The Structure And Function Of Invertebrate Communities In A Southeastern Coastal Plain Stream, Damon L. Mullis Jan 2014

The Effects Of Beaver Dams On The Structure And Function Of Invertebrate Communities In A Southeastern Coastal Plain Stream, Damon L. Mullis

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Beaver were at the brink of extinction in the early 20th century, but over the past century populations have been rebounding. This increase in range and population size has raised new concerns over possible impacts on aquatic ecosystems. Beaver are considered ecosystem engineers because they change the physical structure of aquatic systems through the construction of dams, which turn naturally flowing sections of rivers and streams into standing water. Such changes are known to influence habitat heterogeneity, influence organic matter transport and storage, and consequentially influence biological diversity. To my knowledge, no studies of the effects of beaver impoundments …

Novel Interdisciplinary Approaches To Understanding Kidney Transplantation Outcomes, Neel Butala Jan 2014

Novel Interdisciplinary Approaches To Understanding Kidney Transplantation Outcomes, Neel Butala

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This thesis details 2 studies using novel approaches to understand kidney transplant outcomes: instrumental variables and social network analysis. Together, these studies demonstrate the value of interdisciplinary approaches to advance the field of kidney transplantation.

While some studies have found an association between delayed graft function (DGF) after kidney transplantation and worse long-term outcomes, a causal relationship remains controversial. In our first study, we investigate this relationship using an instrumental variables model (IVM), a quasi-randomization technique for drawing causal inferences. We identified 73,714 adult, deceased-donor, kidney-only transplant recipients from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) between 1997 and 2010. …

The Three Waves Of Married Women's Property Acts In The Nineteenth Century With A Focus On Mississippi, New York And Oregon, Joseph A. Custer Jan 2014

The Three Waves Of Married Women's Property Acts In The Nineteenth Century With A Focus On Mississippi, New York And Oregon, Joseph A. Custer

Faculty Publications

This paper concentrates on three states that enacted married women's property acts during the nineteenth century: Mississippi, New York, and Oregon. Each state, starting with Mississippi, enacted acts that reflect a different wave. While Chused's indexing and classification schema have been groundbreaking and extremely helpful in providing order and a basic understanding of what types of married women's property acts were passed and when in the nineteenth century, in my opinion he did not clearly provide any underlying explanation or "why" for the passage of the acts.

This is not taking anything away from Chusad's substantial contribution, but does present …
