Influence Of Egg Oiling On Colony Presence Of Ring-Billed Gulls, Travis L. Devault, Paige M. Schmidt, Fred E. Pogmore, John Gobeille, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans Jan 2014

Influence Of Egg Oiling On Colony Presence Of Ring-Billed Gulls, Travis L. Devault, Paige M. Schmidt, Fred E. Pogmore, John Gobeille, Jerrold L. Belant, Thomas W. Seamans

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Egg oiling is a form of management in which bird eggs are coated with mineral or corn oil, preventing gas exchange through the shell and killing embryos. Unlike other nest disturbance techniques, egg oiling reportedly precludes colony abandonment and, thus, can be advantageous when managers wish to limit dispersal within the breeding season to other locations while stabilizing the population or reducing productivity. However, unintended, indirect effects of egg oiling are not well-characterized. We evaluated the influence of egg oiling on ring-billed gulls (Larus delawarensis) within the Lake Champlain basin, Vermont, during the nesting season to determine whether egg oiling …

Integrating Mammalian Hazards With Management At U.S. Civil Airports: A Case Study, Kristin M. Biondi, Jerrold L. Belant, James A. Martin, Travis L. Devault, Guiming Wang

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Wildlife incidents with U.S. civil aircraft cost an estimated $1.4 billion from 1990 to 2010, with mammals 5 times more likely to cause damage than other wildlife. We surveyed 2 general aviation (GA) airports and 6 Part-139 certificated (i.e., certified) airports to assess efficacy of management practices for mammalian species hazardous to aircraft. We obtained information on mammalian species present on airport grounds, types and estimated effectiveness of management techniques, and effort spent on wildlife management. We evaluated management techniques relative to aircraft–wildlife collisions (i.e., incident) frequencies taken from Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) National Wildlife Strike Database and species hazard …

Testing Systems Of Avian Perch Deterrents On Electric Power Distribution Poles In Sage-Brush Habitat, James F. Dwyer, Kerrin W. Doloughan Jan 2014

Testing Systems Of Avian Perch Deterrents On Electric Power Distribution Poles In Sage-Brush Habitat, James F. Dwyer, Kerrin W. Doloughan

Human–Wildlife Interactions

In Lincoln County, Washington, USA, greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and Columbian sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus) are managed as reintroduced and augmented populations, respectively. Predation by raptors and corvids is a concern, particularly where utility poles may provide hunting perches near leks (i.e., breeding areas). Perch deterrents may offer a mitigating strategy if deterrents reduce the frequency or duration of perching. To investigate the effects of various perch deterrents, we deployed deterrents on 5 power poles retained for use in this study when 33 poles were removed from occupied grouse habitat. We rotated deterrents among poles every 15 to 28 …

Determination Of Residue Levels Of Alpha-Chloralose In Duck Tissues, David A. Goldade, Randal S. Stahl, John. J. Johnston Jan 2014

Determination Of Residue Levels Of Alpha-Chloralose In Duck Tissues, David A. Goldade, Randal S. Stahl, John. J. Johnston

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Alpha-chloralose (AC) is used to capture nuisance waterfowl so that they can be relocated. Concerns for food safety limit its use prior to or during the waterfowl hunting season. To determine its half-life in tissue, we administered AC to adult male (n = 7) and female (n = 5) mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) via oral gavage. A gel capsule containing 100 μCi of radioactive AC (14C-AC) and sufficient nonlabeled AC to produce a dose of approximately 30 mg/kg was given to each duck. The ducks were euthanized at 2, 6, 10, and 18 hours postdosing …

Evaluation Of Foliar Sprays To Reduce Crop Damage By Canada Geese, Charles D. Dieter, Cody S. Warner, Curiong Ren

Human–Wildlife Interactions

South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks annually spends >$500,000 managing crop damage caused by grazing Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Foliar applications of a chemical feeding deterrent could provide an effective alternative to the methods currently being used to reduce damage. In 2011 and 2012, we evaluated Rejex-It Migrate Turfguard®, Bird Shield®, Avian Control®, and Avipel® as grazing deterrents. We used a ground sprayer to apply the treatments every 7 days to plots in soybean fields in Day County, South Dakota. We monitored activity in the plots using time-lapse photography. We began treating the plots after geese …

Effects Of Removal On A Lightly Exploited Coyote Population In Eastern Nevada, Patrick J. Jackson Jan 2014

Effects Of Removal On A Lightly Exploited Coyote Population In Eastern Nevada, Patrick J. Jackson

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Coyote (Canis latrans) removal is a common, yet controversial, management practice to increase game populations throughout the West. I studied the effect of removal on coyote populations in eastern Nevada from 2004 to 2008 and reviewed 27 available publications to determine the level of human exploitation on my study populations. Removals were performed by USDA Wildlife Services (WS) to benefit game populations and involved the use of trapping, neck snaring, and ground and aerial shooting. To determine if the removal had an effect on the coyote populations, I measured 3 parameters: the presence or absence of skewed sex …

American Black Bear–Apiary Conflicts In Michigan, Beverly K. Mckinley, Jerrold L. Belant, Dwayne R. Etter Jan 2014

American Black Bear–Apiary Conflicts In Michigan, Beverly K. Mckinley, Jerrold L. Belant, Dwayne R. Etter

Human–Wildlife Interactions

American black bear (Ursus americanus) damage to apiaries can result in substantial economic loss. We used records of black–bear apiary conflicts collected by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to characterize damage in the Upper and Northern Lower peninsulas of Michigan from April 2003 to May 2011. Most conflicts occurred between May and July, and the number of conflicts decreased across years. The number of reported conflicts was directly correlated with bear population size. However, we found no positive association between numbers of reported conflicts with bear condition as indexed by winter severity and hive abundance. Intolerance toward …

A Spatially Explicit Model Of The White-Tailed Deer Population In Delaware, Brian Jennings, Jacob L. Bowman, Elizabeth L. Tymkiw Jan 2014

A Spatially Explicit Model Of The White-Tailed Deer Population In Delaware, Brian Jennings, Jacob L. Bowman, Elizabeth L. Tymkiw

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Population models of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are used by many states to predict population levels and aid in making management decisions. Delaware did not have a deer population model, so we developed one and used it to investigate the implications of changes to the harvest. We modeled 7 changes to the harvest regime and compared these changes to the base line of no changes to the harvest regime. We used survival rates, reproductive rates, harvest data, a population estimate, and spotlight counts to construct the model. The model scenario began in February 2006 and ran until August …

War Is Governance: Explaining The Logic Of The Laws Of War From A Principal-Agent Perspective, Eyal Benvenisti, Amichai Cohen Jan 2014

War Is Governance: Explaining The Logic Of The Laws Of War From A Principal-Agent Perspective, Eyal Benvenisti, Amichai Cohen

Michigan Law Review

What is the purpose of the international law on armed conflict, and why would opponents bent on destroying each other’s capabilities commit to and obey rules designed to limit their choice of targets, weapons, and tactics? Traditionally, answers to this question have been offered on the one hand by moralists who regard the law as being inspired by morality and on the other by realists who explain this branch of law on the basis of reciprocity. Neither side’s answers withstand close scrutiny. In this Article, we develop an alternative explanation that is based on the principal–agent model of domestic governance. …

Catchment Streamflow Response To Climate Change Conditioned By Historic Alterations Of Land-Use: Forest Harvest, Succession, And Stand Conversion, David Young Jan 2014

Catchment Streamflow Response To Climate Change Conditioned By Historic Alterations Of Land-Use: Forest Harvest, Succession, And Stand Conversion, David Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Forest management practices and climate change can alter streamflow in headwater catchments by changing the balance between precipitation and factors that control evapotranspiration. To understand how water resources are changing, the impacts of climate change and forest disturbance must be isolated. Toward this end the Budyko decomposition method is applied to quantify the impacts of climate change and forest disturbance on catchments of the Fernow Experimental Forest. The Budyko framework provides the theoretical basis for the methodology and assumes variation in streamflow can be attributed to the principal controls governing climate (precipitation and potential evapotranspiration) and catchment water balance (precipitation …

Floodplain Mapping In Response To Surface Mine Reclamation, Erin E. O'Leary Jan 2014

Floodplain Mapping In Response To Surface Mine Reclamation, Erin E. O'Leary

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Surface mining and the associated reclamation cause changes in land use and land cover. This change can affect the hydrologic balance. In some cases, an increase in number and magnitude of flood events is observed both on site and in surrounding areas. This research analyzed the hydrologic effects downstream of a reclaimed surface mine, considering the impact of an alternative reclamation technique. Geomorphic landform design (GLD) is a reclamation method that considers the development mature landform shapes to help create a long-term hydrologic balance. Flood maps were created for the pre-mined condition and compared to maps created for three reclamation …

Grass Component Effect On Soil Physical Properties In An Organic Crop Rotation, Emily Leslie Romano Jan 2014

Grass Component Effect On Soil Physical Properties In An Organic Crop Rotation, Emily Leslie Romano

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the past few decades, organic productions systems have become increasingly popular due to rising environmental awareness. Much research has been done on crop rotations and fertilization in conventional agricultural systems, but because organic management practices are often different from those in conventional systems, much is unknown about the effect of organic management practices on soil quality. Composted manure and a temporary grass component within an organic crop rotation may be capable of improving soil quality, and may be particularly important in the absence of synthetic chemical inputs. The objective of this research was to evaluate soil quality changes in …

An Old Tool For A New Generation: Using The Star Power Simulation To Teach Social Inequality, Barbara Prince Jan 2014

An Old Tool For A New Generation: Using The Star Power Simulation To Teach Social Inequality, Barbara Prince

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Students today are unique. They are the first generation to be "growing up digital" and are distinctly different from their baby boomer parents. As a result, this net generation does not fit well within the passive nature of the standard format of classes. One technique, employed by a growing number of faculty within the field of teaching and learning, to facilitate experiential learning is the use of simulations. One example is the simulation Star Power, which simulates the use/abuse of power, stratification, and inequality. Simulations such as Star Power can be a vital tool for teaching core sociological concepts, including …

Ion Current Rectification In Nanomicro-Fluidic Interfaces And Pulsed Glow Discharge Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometric Chemical Speciation, Han Wang Jan 2014

Ion Current Rectification In Nanomicro-Fluidic Interfaces And Pulsed Glow Discharge Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometric Chemical Speciation, Han Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Microfluidics continues to be of interest for analyzing chemical and biological samples because of the disposability, portability, low sample consumption, fast analysis time, and parallel analysis potential for multiple samples in a single device. To improve microfluidic device functionality, integrated systems-nanofluidic/microfluidic interfaces (NMIs) have been fabricated for concentrating samples and performing as molecular gates. Ion current rectification has been confirmed in NMI with an asymmetric system. In chapter 2, the asymmetry of the NMI is systematically altered by varying the inner diameter of the nanocapillary membrane (NCM) reservoir, and the current rectification factor is observed to increase as the inner …

Meta-Analysis Of Melanoma Incidence In The United States: Demographic Variation And Relationship With Uv Index And Latitude, Charles Thomas Pritchard Jan 2014

Meta-Analysis Of Melanoma Incidence In The United States: Demographic Variation And Relationship With Uv Index And Latitude, Charles Thomas Pritchard

Honors Theses

A link between exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and melanoma skin cancer formation has generally been accepted in the scientific community, but precise quantification of such a link into a predictive equation is difficult to find in scientific literature. It was the aim of this study to determine if a quantifiable relationship exists between UV exposure and melanoma rates in the United States. Prior to the initiation of this study, it was hypothesized that existing predictive equations using accumulated UV index and latitude for general skin cancer incidence (i.e., including both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers) in Chile would be …

Formation Of 2-Halomethylene-4-Cyclopentene-1,3-Diones Andor 2-Halo-1,4-Benzoquinones, Total Synthesis Of Methyl Linderone And Wacker-Type Oxidation Of Aryl-Substituted Alkenes, Hong Yin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

We have discovered a practical general method for the preparation of diverse 2-halomethylene-4-cyclopentene-1,3-diones and/or 2-halo-1,4-benzoquinones. An in-depth study of the reactions of 4-(ethynyl)-4-hydroxy-2,3-substituted-2-cyclobuten-1-ones with N-bromo- or N-iodosuccinimide is described. This reaction was used in a short total synthesis of methyl linderone. Also, a series of facile, palladium catalyzed, direct, and regiospecific Wacker-type oxidations has been developed to yield various alpha-arylated ketones from aryl-substituted internal alkenes.

Sentenced To Die In Prison: Life Without Parole As An Eighth Amendment Violation For All Juveniles And Especially Those Who Have Not Killed, Morgan S. Mcginnis Jan 2014

Sentenced To Die In Prison: Life Without Parole As An Eighth Amendment Violation For All Juveniles And Especially Those Who Have Not Killed, Morgan S. Mcginnis

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Over the last decade, the Supreme Court of the United States has delivered a series of rulings establishing that juvenile offenders are to have their criminal sentences considered differently from that of adults. Over this span of time, the Court established that it is unconstitutional to sentence a juvenile to the death penalty in any scenario, as well as to life without parole for non-homicide crimes. In the 2012 case of Miller v. Alabama, the Court extended this line of reasoning by declaring that even for juveniles who commit homicides, life without parole may not be imposed as part of …

What Is Still Radical In The Antislavery Legal Practice Of Salmon P. Chase, Matthew A. Axtell Jan 2014

What Is Still Radical In The Antislavery Legal Practice Of Salmon P. Chase, Matthew A. Axtell

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

This Article is an in-depth study of the early commercial law career of Salmon P. Chase, U.S. Secretary of Treasury between 1861 and 1864 and President Abraham Lincoln's choice to replace Roger B. Taney (author of the Dred Scott opinion) as the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Occasionally portrayed in his latter political career as "the most radical" member of Lincoln's war cabinet, Chase's early law practice is best known for its defense of people of color seeking to escape slavery, at the time earning him the nickname as the "Attorney General for Fugitive Slaves." In recent years, …

An Empirical Study Of Different Approaches For Protein Classification, Loris Nanni, Alessandra Lumini, S. Berlin Brahnam Jan 2014

An Empirical Study Of Different Approaches For Protein Classification, Loris Nanni, Alessandra Lumini, S. Berlin Brahnam

College of Business

Many domains would benefit from reliable and efficient systems for automatic protein classification. An area of particular interest in recent studies on automatic protein classification is the exploration of new methods for extracting features from a protein that work well for specific problems. These methods, however, are not generalizable and have proven useful in only a few domains. Our goal is to evaluate several feature extraction approaches for representing proteins by testing them across multiple datasets. Different types of protein representations are evaluated: those starting from the position specific scoring matrix of the proteins (PSSM), those derived from the amino-acid …

Art As Person: Correlative Personhood In Aesthetic Representation, Michael Dufresne Jan 2014

Art As Person: Correlative Personhood In Aesthetic Representation, Michael Dufresne

UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses

In this paper, I argue that the metaphor of art as person should be implemented as a way to understand artistic interaction, such that the relationship between artworks and spectators should be understood as one between persons. I begin this argument by first juxtaposing Hans-Georg Gadamer’s notion of aesthetic representation with the values that constitute correlative person in Confucianism. This juxtaposition draws similarities between artworks and persons that make the metaphor of art as person a plausible means for understanding artistic interaction. I then appeal to Michel Foucault for two significant reasons: his subjectfication of the self solidifies the comparisons …

Speciation Of Chromium By The Combination Of Dispersive Liquid--Liquid Microextraction And Microsample Injection Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Yunusemre Ünsal, Mustafa Tüzen, Mustafa Soylak

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A microextraction procedure was established for the speciation of total Cr, Cr(III), and Cr(VI). Sudan blue II was used as a ligand for speciation works. Some factors affecting the recoveries of chromium species, including type of extraction and dispersive solvents, pH, ligand amount, extraction time, and matrix ions, were examined. Optimum values for the dispersive liquid--liquid microextraction method were pH 6, LOD 0.34 \mu g L^{-1}, and preconcentration factor 400. Chromium(III) was quantitatively recovered under optimal conditions, while the recovery of chromium(VI) was below 10%. The relative standard deviation for Cr(III) determinations for the 10-replicate measurement of 0.3 \mu g …

Synthesis And X-Ray Powder Diffraction, Electrochemical, And Genotoxic Properties Of A New Azo-Schiff Base And Its Metal Complexes, Mustafa Bal, Gökhan Ceyhan, Bariş Avar, Muhammet Köse, Ahmet Kayraldiz, Mükerrem Kurtoğlu

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A new, substituted 2-[(E)-{[4-(benzyloxy)phenyl]imino} methyl]-4-[(E)-(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]phenol azo-azomethine ligand (mbH) was synthesized from 2-hydroxy-5-[(4-nitrophenyl)diazenyl]benzaldehyde and 4-benzyloxyanilinehydrochloride in ethyl alcohol solution. These mononuclear Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) complexes of the ligand were prepared and their structures were proposed by elemental analysis, and infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy; the proton NMR spectrum of the mbH ligand was also recorded. The azo-azomethine ligand, mbH, behaves as a bidentate ligand coordinating through the nitrogen atom of the azomethine (--CH=N--) and the oxygen atom of the phenolic group. Elemental analyses indicated that the metal:ligand ratio was 1:2 in the metal chelates. Powder X-ray diffraction parameters suggested …

Spectrophotometric Determination Of Molybdenum Using Surfactant-Mediated Liquid--Liquid Extraction, Rameshwar Dass, Jitander Kumar Kapoor, Sunita Gambhir Jan 2014

Spectrophotometric Determination Of Molybdenum Using Surfactant-Mediated Liquid--Liquid Extraction, Rameshwar Dass, Jitander Kumar Kapoor, Sunita Gambhir

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A new spectrophotometric method has been developed for determination of molybdenum using surfactant-mediated liquid--liquid extraction. Molybdenum(V) obtained by ascorbic acid reduction in 2.5 M H_2SO_4 reacted spontaneously with thiocyanate and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), forming an intense orange yellow complex that was extracted quantitatively into 1,2-dichloroethane and absorbed at 460 nm. The absorbance of the extract was found to be stable for more than 24 h. Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration range 0.1--4.2 \mu g Mo mL^{-1} of the extract. The linear range for an accurate determination was found to be 1.2--2.6 \mu g Mo mL^{-1}. The …
