Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Recently, the on-line health monitoring have been considered in the research to obtain pragmatic e-health systems with low cost and high efficiency. In this paper, a mobile e-health system is proposed based on an algorithm over long terms eVolution (LTE) technology that can be called as fourth generation (4G). This system controls the receiving of the transmitted health data from the patients under supervision and replies the responses of the considered algorithm. The responded signals include the required actions that should be performed by the patient and the hospital. The proposed system utilizes the LTE based mobile networks for the …

Static Stability Analysis Of Hexagonal Hexapod Robot For The Periodic Gaits, Firas A., Hind Z. Khaleel Jan 2014

Static Stability Analysis Of Hexagonal Hexapod Robot For The Periodic Gaits, Firas A., Hind Z. Khaleel

Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering

Hexagonal hexapod robot is a flexible mechanical robot with six legs. It has the ability to walk over terrain. The hexapod robot likes insect so it has the same periodic gaits. These gaits are tripod, wave and ripple gaits. Hexapod robot needs to stay statically stable at all the times during each gait in order not to fall with three or more legs continuously contacts with the ground. The safety static stability walking can be indicated by the stability margin. In this paper we based on the forward, inverse kinematics for each hexapod’s leg to simulate the hexapod robot model …

These robots are able to locate a specified target in the predefined environment with high efficiency when driven by an optimized Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The application of the particle system to the mobile robots to search for a target in the environment is called Collective Robotics Search (CRS) problem. The main benefit of this application is to eVolve better solutions than using single robot through the collective interaction of all robots between them to achieve the …

De Concentv Amisso Qvaerendo: An Investigation Into The Relative Benefits Of Three Different Types Of Ambient Music On The Observed Agitated Behaviour And Quality Of Life Of Dementia Sufferers In Residential Aged Care Facilities, Peter Wilkinson Jan 2014

De Concentv Amisso Qvaerendo: An Investigation Into The Relative Benefits Of Three Different Types Of Ambient Music On The Observed Agitated Behaviour And Quality Of Life Of Dementia Sufferers In Residential Aged Care Facilities, Peter Wilkinson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There is an increasing body of research evidence to support the use of music as a therapeutic modality in reducing the agitated behaviour frequently associated with late-stage dementia. Although much of this evidence suggests that music interventions are most effective when they are “individualized”, this type of intervention is often difficult to implement in large, busy, aged care facilities where residents may be located together in communal areas during the day. The challenge therefore is to try and identify a particular musical genre which, when played as “ambient” or “background” music, demonstrates a consistent capacity to reduce agitated behaviour in …

Meaningful Encounters: Creating A Multi-Method Site For Interacting With Nonhuman Life Through Bioarts Praxis, Donna Franklin Jan 2014

Meaningful Encounters: Creating A Multi-Method Site For Interacting With Nonhuman Life Through Bioarts Praxis, Donna Franklin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research advocates a multi-method approach to bioarts praxis, reflexively and critically questioning the contemporary contexts that frame our engagement with nonhuman life. In doing so, the research aims to generate further community engagement with nonhuman life and the environment, and engender critical discourse on the implications of developing biotechnologies.

Hegemonic institutions influence the way culture is produced and how information is constructed and understood. Habermas (1987) suggests that these institutions will inevitably influence the individual’s lifeworld as they shape lived experience through the process of systemic colonisation. I assert that this process also shapes how individuals engage with or …

Causality Is Logically Definable-Toward An Equilibrium-Based Computing Paradigm Of Quantum Agents And Quantum Intelligence (Qaqi), Wen-Ran Zhang, Karl E. Peace

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

A survey on agents, causality and intelligence is presented and an equilibrium-based computing paradigm of quantum agents and quantum intelligence (QAQI) is proposed. In the survey, Aristotle’s causality principle and its historical extensions by David Hume, Bertrand Russell, Lotfi Zadeh, Donald Rubin, Judea Pearl, Niels Bohr, Albert Einstein, David Bohm, and the causal set initiative are reviewed; bipolar dynamic logic (BDL) is introduced as a causal logic for bipolar inductive and deductive reasoning; bipolar quantum linear algebra (BQLA) is introduced as a causal algebra for quantum agent interaction and formation. Despite the widely held view that causality is undefinable with …

Educational Disparities' Impact On Risk Factors For Hypertension: National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2010, Priska Ursula Baker Jan 2014

Educational Disparities' Impact On Risk Factors For Hypertension: National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey 2003-2010, Priska Ursula Baker

All Master's Theses

The intention of this study is to explore if education attainment is an independent risk factor for hypertension when other risk factors related to hypertension are accounted for. It is hypothesized that education will be an independent risk factor for hypertension even when other risk factors are considered.

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2003-2010 was used and analyses were conducted using SAS 9.2. Simple logistic regression analysis revealed that all education categories had significantly lower odds of having hypertension compared to < 9th grade education. Since hypertension risk was affected by gender, ethnicity, age, weight, abdominal obesity, smoking status, income and nutrient intake, these covariates were included in a multiple logistic regression model with educational attainment. In this model, hypertension only trended towards significance for educational attainment.

Although educational attainment may play a role in the prevalence of hypertension disparities, …

Computing Mountain Passes, Garret Bolton Jan 2014

Computing Mountain Passes, Garret Bolton

All Master's Theses

There are many equations in the applied sciences whose solutions correspond to critical points of a function describing specific phenomenon. For example, molecules have a unique potential energy, and one stable conformation of a molecule can be thought of as a low point on a potential energy surface. Finding the mountain pass point between two confirmations of a molecule is analogous to finding the energy of a biological structure that is an intermediate conformation between two stable states. Mathematicians have developed theorems and abstract techniques to find these mountain pass points. However, using such approaches is often difficult, especially because …

Aligning Policy With Perception: Management Of Whitewater Recreationists In The Tieton River Corridor, Kathryn Buchholz Jan 2014

Aligning Policy With Perception: Management Of Whitewater Recreationists In The Tieton River Corridor, Kathryn Buchholz

All Master's Theses

Best management practices for whitewater recreationists visiting the Tieton River Corridor were identified by integrating carrying capacity, visitor perceptions of their experience and land managers' regulations. Indicators of bare soil measurements, vehicle parking capacity and crowding were utilized to formulate ecological, physical and social carrying capacities of the study area in relation to whitewater recreationists. One hundred forty-eight participants responded to onsite questionnaires regarding perceptions on crowding, the study area, and their experience of visiting the Tieton River Corridor. Forest Service policy was examined and applied to the study area to identify areas exceeding standards. An intervention tool incorporating persuasive …

Empathy: A Possible Link Between Charismatic Megafauna And Environmental Concern, Anthony Joseph Carr Jan 2014

Empathy: A Possible Link Between Charismatic Megafauna And Environmental Concern, Anthony Joseph Carr

All Master's Theses

Environmental organizations have long used charismatic megafauna - popular large animals - as strategic figureheads to summon support for conservation actions. While the animals chosen as flagship species usually have anthropomorphic features, such as large body size and forward-facing eyes, there is no commonly accepted explanation for why these similarities influence people's willingness to help these species. In this study, empathy was found to be predictive of perceived need and willingness to help in a conservation scenario. While framing a threatened ecosystem as the habitat of an unspecified animal species with cultural characteristics increased reports of situational empathy, perceived need …

Level P300: An Erp And Working Memory Evaluation Of Gamers And Non-Gamers, Derek Matthew Ellis Jan 2014

Level P300: An Erp And Working Memory Evaluation Of Gamers And Non-Gamers, Derek Matthew Ellis

All Master's Theses

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) estimates that the average U.S. household owns at least one video game console. The ESRB also notes that 66% of parents believe video games offer mental stimulation or education. Few studies have analyzed the impact of video game play on cognition. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the impact of video games on both behavioral and neurophysiological measures (event-related potentials) of working memory. Stimuli used during the neurophysiological portion of the study were based on the visual odd-ball paradigm in which participants had to respond to standard and rare occurring visual …

Population Structure And Growth Rates Of Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes In The Methow Valley, Washington, Raymund Joseph Geroso Jan 2014

Population Structure And Growth Rates Of Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes In The Methow Valley, Washington, Raymund Joseph Geroso

All Master's Theses

Population structure among a wide-ranging ectothermic species is a fundamental aspect of ecology. I assessed the size structure and growth rate of two different populations of Northern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) in the Methow Valley, Washington during the summer of 2009 to determine the vigor of populations exposed to extreme winter conditions. Populations in the Methow Valley were comparable to other populations exposed to shorter active seasons. One population was in stable condition, and the other may have the potential to grow. Though the number of rattlesnakes was much smaller in the WC den compared to the GR …

Morphological Analysis And Soil Characterization Of Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza) Natural Hybrid Zones In Central Washington, Mariah H. Helvy Jan 2014

Morphological Analysis And Soil Characterization Of Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza) Natural Hybrid Zones In Central Washington, Mariah H. Helvy

All Master's Theses

It has been hypothesized that species of Balsamroot, genus Balsamorhiza, hybridize readily in nature, but no study has quantitatively described the morphological types found in or the environmental characteristics of hybrid zones in this genus. Here, we investigate the relationship between morphological types and soil characteristics in four Balsamorhiza sagittata-hookeri putative hybrid zones in Grant County, Washington State, USA. Clustering analysis of morphological traits suggested that plants could be classified into two groups, a B. sagittata-like group and a B. hookeri-like group, although there was variation within each group. Over all sites, B. sagittata-like plants were …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Zinc Sulfide/Zinc Oxide Semiconductor Nanoparticles, Daniel Alan Hall Jan 2014

Synthesis And Characterization Of Zinc Sulfide/Zinc Oxide Semiconductor Nanoparticles, Daniel Alan Hall

All Master's Theses

ZnS/ZnO semiconductor nanoparticles have been synthesized with L-cysteine and sodium polyphosphate capping agents using a colloidal synthesis method. The nanoparticles were characterized through the use of fluorescence spectroscopy, ultraviolet/visible (UV /Vis) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) instrumentation. Introduction of oxygen during the synthesis reaction increases the intensity of the nanoparticle fluorescence and causes a blue shift in emissions which becomes more pronounced with longer exposure to oxygen. Growth of the ZnO shell around the ZnS particles alters the composition from a ZnS nanoparticle to a ZnS/ZnO nanoparticle as seen by an increase in absorbance from 350nm to 450nm which indicates …

Dna From Chewed Vegetation: A Noninvasive Collection Strategy For Golden-Handed Tamarins (Saguinus Midas), Jennifer E. Humphreys

All Master's Theses

Noninvasive genetic sampling was first used in wild animals more than two decades ago, although since that time there have been advancements in both sampling strategies and amplification technology [Hoss et al., 1992; Taberlet and Bouvet, 1992]. Feces, hair, and urine are examples of biomaterials that are collected noninvasively [Beja-Pereira et al., 2009]. These materials provide clear advantages over the more invasive DNA sampling techniques such as blood collection; researchers can study nonhuman subjects without contacting, disturbing, or even seeing them. This advantage becomes greater in habitats disturbed by human activities such as agriculture or mining. The Republic of Suriname, …

The Effects Of Sugar Substitutes On The Gut Microbiota Of Mice, Katie A. Lantau Jan 2014

The Effects Of Sugar Substitutes On The Gut Microbiota Of Mice, Katie A. Lantau

All Master's Theses

Obesity has become an ever increasing global problem. This has caused people to turn to sugar substitutes, no calorie sweeteners, to reduce their caloric intake. However, recent studies have shown that it is not just caloric intake that can affect weight, but also the diversity of the bacteria in the gut (Turnbaugh et al., 2009). It has been shown that an increased Firmicutes:Bacteroidetes ratio and an overall decrease in microbial diversity leads to an obesity associated gut microbiome (Turnbaugh et al., 2009; Ley et al., 2005). The purpose of this study was to determine if two of the most popular …

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie Jan 2014

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, David Bowie

Faculty Publications

Studies have found that Mormons and non-Mormons in Utah exhibit significant linguistic differences. We break this down further by investigating whether there are also differences between Mormons who actively participate in the religion and those who do not, and find significant differences with a medium or larger effect size between the groups for multiple variables. We conclude that when investigating the linguistic correlates of religious affiliation in a community, it is vital to elicit not just respondents’ religious affiliations, but also their level of participation within that religion.

The Influence Of Pornography On Sexual Scripts And Hooking Up Among Emerging Adults In College, Scott Braithwaite, Gwen Coulson, Krista Keddington, Frank D. Fincham

Faculty Publications

The explosive growth in access to the Internet has led to a commensurate increase in the availability, anonymity, andaffordabilityofpornography.Anemergingbodyofresearch has shown associations between pornography and certain behaviors and attitudes; yet, how pornography actually influences these outcomes has not been documented. In two studies (Study 1N=969; Study 2N=992) we examined the hypothesis that pornography influences potentially risky sexual behavior (hooking up) among emerging adults via sexual scripts. Our results demonstrate that more frequent viewing of pornography is associated with a higher incidence of hooking up and a higher number of unique hook up partners. We replicated these effects both cross-sectionally and …

Preventing Childhood Obesity: A Mixed Methods Study Into The Perceptions Of African Americans In A Rural Community, Dayna S. Alexander Jan 2014

Preventing Childhood Obesity: A Mixed Methods Study Into The Perceptions Of African Americans In A Rural Community, Dayna S. Alexander

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Preventing childhood obesity is a global priority due to adverse health risks and financial burdens. With childhood obesity rates stabilizing it is difficult to determine which factors alone (i.e., genetic, environmental, behavioral, or demographic) increase susceptibility to childhood obesity. Parents influence childhood obesity risk factors through their parenting styles and behaviors. Social behavioral theories and public health evidence demonstrate including parents in childhood obesity efforts could assist in reducing childhood obesity rates. The objective of this study was to assess perceptions of childhood obesity among African Americans with children enrolled in a rural elementary school in the Deep South. The …

Phenology Of A Relict Population Of The Pitcher Plant Mosquito, Wyeomyia Smithii (Diptera: Culicidae), In Tattnall Co., Ga, Rachel L. Morreale

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Wyeomyia smithii Coquillett lives only within the pitchers of the purple pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea L. An isolated population of Wy. smithii occurs in Tattnall Co., GA isolated from other populations by over 300 km in all directions. In order to monitor the stability, phenology, and behavior of this population, fluctuations of the larval and pupal abundances (number/pitcher) were monitored over time. The density (number/mL) of Wy. smithii larvae present within pitchers was recorded from June 2012 until April 2014. Fluid volume contained in pitchers had a strong positive effect on larval abundance within the pitcher (r2 = 0.624). …
