This article is an example of what Professor Richard Epstein would call "Contracts small." According to Professor Richard Epstein, "'Contracts small' relates to contract law at the doctrinal level; it focuses on the rules of contract formation and performance; the everyday 'stuff of lawyer's law.' "This article looks to the Restatement of Contracts (hereafter "Restatement") and the Restatement (Second) of Contracts (hereafter "Restatement Second") for answers to the questions raised by the two problems. The Restatements generally have both been praised and condemned for their focus on doctrinal issues-on what Richard Epstein calls the "everyday stuff of lawyer's law." As …

American Indian Tribes in the United States have a unique legal and political status shaped by fluctuating federal policies and the over-arching history of this country’s brand of settler-colonialism. One of the several legacies of this history is that federally recognized tribes have membership rules that diverge significantly from typical state or national citizenship criteria. These rules and their history are poorly understood by judges and members of the public, leading to misunderstandings about the “racial” status of tribes and Indian people, and on occasion to incoherent and damaging decisions on a range of Indian law issues. This article, which …

Student Works (2010-2019)

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a therapeutic strategy that utilises the administration of a photosensitiser along with light irradiation to generate reactive singlet oxygen that destruct pathological lesions. However, the current clinically approved photosensitisers for the treatment of cancer present several limitations such as a lack in ideal photophysical and photochemical properties, poor solubility and adverse effects i.e. prolonged photosensitisation or pain following PDT. Therefore, it is necessary to discover and develop new classes of photosensitiser with more ideal properties. From our earlier data, we had shown that 151-hydroxypurpurin-7-lactone dimethyl ester (G2), a semisynthetic cyclic-tetrapyrrole, was a potent photosensitiser. In this …

Antigenic Evolution Of Dengue Virus In Malaysia / Mohammed Bashar Danlami, Mohammed Bashar Danlami Jan 2014

Antigenic Evolution Of Dengue Virus In Malaysia / Mohammed Bashar Danlami, Mohammed Bashar Danlami

Student Works (2010-2019)

Neutralization escape mutant has played an important role in antigenic evolution of various virus-causing diseases. DENV, the causative agent of dengue has been shown to escape antibody neutralization, thereby causing an epidemic outbreak. The pattern through which DENV escape neutralization that leads to antigenic evolution, however, has not been thoroughly investigated in hyper endemic countries. It is hypothesized that, the highly susceptible DENV demonstrates a clear pattern of antigenic evolution from being minor strains (less frequent during an outbreak) to dominant strains (very frequent during an outbreak). This suggests that the minor strains may act as a springboard for the …

Genomic And Proteomic Characterisation Of Primary Colorectal Tumours In The Malaysian Population / Lau Tze Pheng, Tze Pheng Lau

Student Works (2010-2019)

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a multifactorial disease whereby gene-gene and gene-environment interactions contribute to its development and progression. It is also polygenic in nature, hence a large number of genetic alterations, each conferring a small genotypic risk, determine the individual’s susceptibility to this disease. Therefore, it is of clinical importance to identify potential CRC susceptibility gene candidates for improvement of future CRC screening and surveillance. This can be achieved by screening low-penetrant genetic variants via case-control studies across populations worldwide. Here, we investigated the association between several genetic variants and CRC susceptibility, i.e., the NOD2, XRCC1, EGF and VEGF genes, …
