Platelet-Rich Plasma (Prp) For The Treatment Of Muscle Injury / Mohamad Shariff A Hamid, A Hamid Mohamad Shariff
Platelet-Rich Plasma (Prp) For The Treatment Of Muscle Injury / Mohamad Shariff A Hamid, A Hamid Mohamad Shariff
Student Works (2010-2019)
Muscle injury particularly the hamstring group is the most common type of sports related injury among athletes. Despite its frequent occurrence, the best treatment for hamstring injury is not known. Athletes affected by muscle injury often need considerable amount of time to recover. Recently autologous biological products are being used for treatment of soft tissue injury including that of muscles. Off recent, an autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is one of the ‘hot topics’ discussed in literatures. A systematic review of the available literatures on PRP therapy showed evidences to support PRP use for rotator cuff injury, lateral epicondylitis (tennis …

A Lightweight Heterogeneous Hybrid Mobile Cloud Computing Framework For Compute-Intensive Mobile Applications / Zohreh Sanaei Moghaddam, Zohreh Sanaei Moghaddam
Student Works (2010-2019)
The state-of-the-art Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) paradigm has gained a momentous ground to mitigate mobile devices’ shortcomings (i.e., computing and energy) by outsourcing resource-intensivemobile tasks to the cloud. Researchers have proposed solutions for compute-intensive mobile applications by leveraging varied types of cloud-based resources, particularly coarse, medium, and fine granular cloud resources. Coarse-grained cloud resources feature high scalability and low locality that originates communication latency, fine-grained resources offer low scalability and high locality that leads to computation latency, and medium-grained resources provide medium scalability and locality breeding communication and computing latency. Such communication and computation latencies negatively impact on energy efficiency …

The Use Of Alginate As A Potential Chondrogenic Differentiation Promoter Of Mesenchymal Stromal Cells And Its Application / Havva Dashtdar, Dashtdar Havva
Student Works (2010-2019)
Alginate culture system offers an ideal 3-Dimensional microenvironment for the re-differentiation of chondrocytes following its isolation from its environment and 2D culture expansion. It has also been shown that this material supports chondrogenesis for mesenchymal stromal cells in vitro. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been considered a potential cell source for cartilage repair. However, successful translation of such stem cell therapy into clinical trials using alginate as a carrier requires better understanding of the complex processes involved in the differentiation of MSCs. Changes in chondrogenic microenvironment may induce different outcomes during chondrogenesis, i.e. either stable chondrocyte-like phenotype or …

Content-Based Recommender System For An Academic Social Network / Vala Ali Rohani, Rohani Vala Ali
Student Works (2010-2019)
The rapid growth of Web 2.0 applications, such as blogs and social networks creates rich online information and provides various new sources of knowledge. The situation, however, leads to a great challenge in terms of information overload among social network users. Recommender systems (RSs) alleviate this problem with a technique that suggests relevant information from the abundance of Web data by considering the user’s previous preference. Collaborative and content-based are the recommendation techniques typically used in existing RSs. The content-based method is employed more widely though. Similar to the collaborative, the content-based technique suffers from the cold-start dilemma that is …

Do Muscle Synergies Reduce The Dimensionality Of Behavior?, N Kuppuswamy, Cm Harris
Do Muscle Synergies Reduce The Dimensionality Of Behavior?, N Kuppuswamy, Cm Harris
School of Psychology
The muscle synergy hypothesis is an archetype of the notion of Dimensionality Reduction (DR) occurring in the central nervous system due to modular organization. Toward validating this hypothesis, it is important to understand if muscle synergies can reduce the state-space dimensionality while maintaining task control. In this paper we present a scheme for investigating this reduction utilizing the temporal muscle synergy formulation. Our approach is based on the observation that constraining the control input to a weighted combination of temporal muscle synergies also constrains the dynamic behavior of a system in a trajectory-specific manner. We compute this constrained reformulation of …
Non-Linear Model Predictive Control Strategies For Process Plants Using Soft Computing Approaches, Kayode Olayemi Owa
Non-Linear Model Predictive Control Strategies For Process Plants Using Soft Computing Approaches, Kayode Olayemi Owa
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The developments of advanced non-linear control strategies have attracted a considerable research interests over the past decades especially in process control. Rather than an absolute reliance on mathematical models of process plants which often brings discrepancies especially owing to design errors and equipment degradation, non-linear models are however required because they provide improved prediction capabilities but they are very difficult to derive. In addition, the derivation of the global optimal solution gets more difficult especially when multivariable and non-linear systems are involved. Hence, this research investigates soft computing techniques for the implementation of a novel real time constrained non-linear model …
Non Invasive Investigation Of Sensorimotor Control For Future Development Of Brain-Machine-Interface (Bmi), Leo Tomasevic
Non Invasive Investigation Of Sensorimotor Control For Future Development Of Brain-Machine-Interface (Bmi), Leo Tomasevic
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
My thesis focuses on describing novel functional connectivity properties of the sensorimotor system that are of potential interest in the field of brain-machine interface. In particular, I have investigated how the connectivity changes as a consequence of either pathologic conditions or spontaneous fluctuations of the brain's internal state. An ad-hoc electronic device has been developed to implement the appropriate experimental settings. First, the functional communication among sensorimotor primary nodes was investigated in multiple sclerosis patients afflicted by persistent fatigue. I selected this condition, for which there is no effective pharmacological treatment, since existing literature links this type of fatigue to …
Modelling Learning To Count In Humanoid Robots, Marek Rucinski
Modelling Learning To Count In Humanoid Robots, Marek Rucinski
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis concerns the formulation of novel developmental robotics models of embodied phenomena in number learning. Learning to count is believed to be of paramount importance for the acquisition of the remarkable fluency with which humans are able to manipulate numbers and other abstract concepts derived from them later in life. The ever-increasing amount of evidence for the embodied nature of human mathematical thinking suggests that the investigation of numerical cognition with the use of robotic cognitive models has a high potential of contributing toward the better understanding of the involved mechanisms. This thesis focuses on two particular groups of …

Towards The Grounding Of Abstract Categories In Cognitive Robots, Francesca Stramandinoli
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
The grounding of language in humanoid robots is a fundamental problem, especially in social scenarios which involve the interaction of robots with human beings. Indeed, natural language represents the most natural interface for humans to interact and exchange information about concrete entities like KNIFE, HAMMER and abstract concepts such as MAKE, USE. This research domain is very important not only for the advances that it can produce in the design of human-robot communication systems, but also for the implication that it can have on cognitive science. Abstract words are used in daily conversations among people to describe events and situations …

Bastard Immigrants: Asylum Seekers Who Arrive By Boat And The Illegitimate Fear Of The Other, Lelia R. Green, Anne Aly
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The human capacity to marginalise and discriminate against others on the basis of innate and constructed characteristics is evident from the long history of discrimination against people whose existence is ‘illegitimate’, defined as being outside the law. What is inside or outside the law depends upon the context under consideration. For example, in societies such as ancient Greece and the antebellum United States, where slavery was legal, people who were constructed as ‘slaves’ could legitimately be treated very differently from ‘citizens’: free people who benefit from a range of human rights (Northup). The discernment of what is legitimate from that …

Motherless Mothers: Maternally Bereaved Women In Their Everyday Roles As Mothers, Bethwyn Rowe, Bronwyn A. Harman
Motherless Mothers: Maternally Bereaved Women In Their Everyday Roles As Mothers, Bethwyn Rowe, Bronwyn A. Harman
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Motherless mothers are women who lose their mothers to death prior to having their children, and therefore raise their children without the maternal support and guidance afforded to many women whose mothers are still alive (Edelman, 2006). A qualitative research design was used to gain an in-depth understanding of the everyday experiences faced by motherless mothers. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 motherless mothers. Four major themes emerged including grief, support, absence of knowledge, and changes to self following loss. Results provide insight into the ongoing influence a mother's death can have on a daughter's life and draw distinction …
Identification Of Unknowns Within A Probabilistic System: The Diagnostic Value Of Attributes, D W. Goodall
Identification Of Unknowns Within A Probabilistic System: The Diagnostic Value Of Attributes, D W. Goodall
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Using a data base underpinned by probability considerations in which a variety of attributes, some of which may be quantitative, are recorded for a number of “operational taxonomic units” (OTUs), a key system is described by which an unnamed specimen may quickly be identified. The concept of “diagnostic power” is introduced, by which each attribute is evaluated in terms of its potential contribution to identifying the unnamed specimen. Besides coverage of different types of attributes and the introduction of “diagnostic power”, the system has the advantages of incorporating multiple values of an attribute for each OTU and offering short-cuts to …

Mechanisms And Ecological Role Of Carbon Transfer Within Coastal Seascapes, Glenn A. Hyndes, Ivan Nagelkerken, Rebecca Mcleod, Rod Connolly, Paul S. Lavery, Mathew A. Vanderklift
Research outputs 2013
Worldwide, coastal systems provide some of the most productive habitats, which potentially influence a range of marine and terrestrial ecosystems through the transfer of nutrients and energy. Several reviews have examined aspects of connectivity within coastal seascapes, but the scope of those reviews has been limited to single systems or single vectors. We use the transfer of carbon to examine the processes of connectivity through multiple vectors in multiple ecosystems using four coastal seascapes as case studies. We discuss and compare the main vectors of carbon connecting different ecosystems, and then the natural and human-induced factors that influence the magnitude …

Regulation Of Human Pax6 Expression By Mir-7, M Needhamsen, Robert B. White, Keith M. Giles, Sarah A. Dunlop, Meghan G. Thomas
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The paired box gene 6 (PAX6) is a powerful mediator of eye and brain organogenesis whose spatiotemporal expression is exquisitely controlled by multiple mechanisms, including post-transcriptional regulation by microRNAs (miRNAs). In the present study, we use bioinformatic predictions to identify three candidate microRNA-7 (miR-7) target sites in the human PAX6 3′ untranslated region (3′-UTR) and demonstrate that two of them are functionally active in a human cell line. Furthermore, transient transfection of cells with synthetic miR-7 inhibits PAX6 protein expression but does not alter levels of PAX6 mRNA, suggesting that miR-7 induces translational repression of PAX6. Finally, a comparison of …

Setting Goals And Choosing Appropriate Reference Sites For Restoring Mine Pit Lakes As Aquatic Ecosystems: Case Study From South West Australia, Eddie J. Van Etten, C. D. Mccullough, Mark A. Lund
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Pit lakes may form when open cut mining leaves a pit void behind that fills with ground and surface water. Often replacing terrestrial ecosystems that existed prior to mining, the pit lake may offer an alternative ecosystem with aquatic biodiversity values that can be realised through planned restoration. Restoration theory and mine closure regulatory requirements guides us toward restoring disturbed systems towards landscapes that are of regional value and relevance. However, how do we identify a restoration target for a novel aquatic habitat that did not exist prior to the new post-mining landscape? This paper presents a process of first …
