Optimal Marketing Date Of Steers Depends On Marketing Strategy, James C. Macdonald, Cody J. Schneider, Kelsey M. Rolfe Rolfe, Stephen D. Kachman, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Seven research trials conducted over five years at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln were summarized to determine how animal performance changes through the finishing period on a live and carcass weight basis. Live weight, carcass weight, carcass ADG, and carcass feed efficiency all changed quadratically throughout the feeding period; live ADG and live feed efficiency declined linearly. During times of negative profit margins, optimal profitability for steers marketed on a live-basis occurred by selling early, whereas optimal profitability was achieved by feeding steers marketed on a carcass-basis longer.

Requiring Pollutant Discharge Permits For Pesticide Applications That Deposit Residues In Surface Waters, Terence Centner, Nicholas Eberhart
Requiring Pollutant Discharge Permits For Pesticide Applications That Deposit Residues In Surface Waters, Terence Centner, Nicholas Eberhart
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
Agricultural producers and public health authorities apply pesticides to control pests that damage crops and carry diseases. Due to the toxic nature of most pesticides, they are regulated by governments. Regulatory provisions require pesticides to be registered and restrictions operate to safeguard human health and the environment. Yet pesticides used near surface waters pose dangers to non-target species and drinking water supplies leading some governments to regulate discharges of pesticides under pollution discharge permits. The dual registration and discharge permitting provisions are burdensome. In the United States, agricultural interest groups are advancing new legislation that would exempt pesticide residues from …

The Influence Of National Culture On Effectiveness Of Safety Trainings During Postdisaster Reconstruction, Behzad Esmaeili, Kevin Grosskopf, Amy Javernick-Will
The Influence Of National Culture On Effectiveness Of Safety Trainings During Postdisaster Reconstruction, Behzad Esmaeili, Kevin Grosskopf, Amy Javernick-Will
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Non-English speaking workers constitute a disproportionately high number of workers involved in postdisaster reconstruction. Additionally, the rate of fatality among these workers is higher than the industry average. Research shows this population is more prone to unsafe behaviors in the working environment, conceivably because many of these workers are sent into the field prior to any formalized training. Recent studies show that the native culture of construction workers can impact risk-taking behavior. While numerous researchers have attempted to develop training materials for Hispanic workers, the number of studies that consider the impact of native culture on safety behavior is minimal. …
Taking The Bloody Linen Out Of The Closet: Menstrual Hygiene As A Priority For Achieving Gender Equality, Inga T. Winkler, Virginia Roaf
Taking The Bloody Linen Out Of The Closet: Menstrual Hygiene As A Priority For Achieving Gender Equality, Inga T. Winkler, Virginia Roaf
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
Regular menstruation signals a woman's health and fertility. menstruation is surrounded by shame, secrecy, embarrassment, fear, humiliation, silence, taboo, and stigma. Linked to this taboo, many cultural and religious norms-often grounded in patriarchal assumptions-seek to prevent contact with menstruating women and girls in order to avoid 'contamination' or 'becoming impure'. To some extent, this perception of menstruation is a paradox, given that motherhood is glorified. However, menstruation is not perceived as feminine', and it does not conform to the stereotypical role and behavior of women. Such stereotypes require women to be beautiful and beautified, deodorized and fresh, not bloody and …

The Seebeck coefficient S is a temperature- and material-dependent property, which linearly and causally relates the temperature difference ΔT between the “hot” and “cold” junctions of a thermoelectric power generator (TEC-PG) to the voltage difference ΔV . This phenomenon is the Seebeck effect (SE), and can be used to convert waste heat into usable energy. This work investigates the trends of the effective voltage output ΔV (t ) and effective Seebeck coefficient S′(t ) versus several hours of activity of a solid state TEC-PG device. The effective Seebeck coefficient S′(t ) here …

An Exploratory Study Of Gait And Balance In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Krystal Mircovich
An Exploratory Study Of Gait And Balance In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Krystal Mircovich
Honors Theses
Research suggests that children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) display movement impairments that are distinct from typically developing peers. Results from numerous studies suggest various and inconsistent findings. Therefore, movement differences in children with ASD should continue to be assessed. The current study examined the characteristics of gait and balance in children with ASD, between the ages of 7 and 11, by comparing behavioral observation and parent report. As two of the most frequent behaviors of movement and two of the main movements implicated in neurological disorders, an evaluation of how these behaviors differ in children with ASD will offer …
A Conservative Isoleucine To Leucine Mutation Of Klentaq1 Dna Polymerase 1 Induces Conformational Change For Cold-Sensitive Phenotype, Emma Caroline Materne
A Conservative Isoleucine To Leucine Mutation Of Klentaq1 Dna Polymerase 1 Induces Conformational Change For Cold-Sensitive Phenotype, Emma Caroline Materne
Honors Theses
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) typically employs the Taq or Klentaq1 DNA polymerase from Thermus aquaticus to elongate short sequences of DNA during DNA amplification. Both Taq and Klentaq1 retain activity at room temperature. During assembly of PCR at room temperature, the activity of Taq and Klentaq1 can result in spurious products due to elongation of primers bound to non-target sequences. A mutation of isoleucine to leucine at position 707 of Klentaq1 results in slowing of the enzyme at room temperature without compromising the fidelity of the enzyme. To understand how a mutation over 20Å from the active site can affect …

This study represents an analysis of student performance in computer information systems (CIS) courses and the potential influence of Jungian personality traits on academic success in CIS courses. For this study, academic success is measured by grades achieved. The MBTI measurement scale was self-analyzed by students in CIS courses from fall 2008 through spring 2013. The data showed a statistically significant correlation between various personality dichotomies of the type (Extraversion-Introversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and JudgingPerceiving) and higher grades scores. The results of this study indicate that course performance of groups of students are different relative to their personality type. In this …

Presuming Consent To Posthumous Reproduction , Hilary Young
Presuming Consent To Posthumous Reproduction , Hilary Young
Journal of Law and Health
I begin by explaining what presuming consent to posthumous reproduction would mean, then justify a presumed consent policy in some circumstances by considering the relevant interests at stake. Specifically, I distinguish between a person’s interest, while alive, in not being made a genetic parent after his death, and a dead person’s interest in not being made a genetic parent. I then examine the nature of the surviving partner’s interest in reproducing with her deceased partner. Each of these interests varies depending on the type of posthumous reproduction at stake. For example, all things being equal, reproduction involving interferences with a …

How Unusual Is Tropical Storm Irene? A Case Study Of Storm Deposition In Littleville Lake, Huntington, Ma, Catherine Dunn
How Unusual Is Tropical Storm Irene? A Case Study Of Storm Deposition In Littleville Lake, Huntington, Ma, Catherine Dunn
Honors Papers
Tropical Storm Irene hit the northeastern United States in August 2011 with impressive rates of precipitation and river discharge. However, it was the combination of this heavy rain with high antecedent soil moisture that made Irene so unusual. The Connecticut River had a particularly high sediment yield after the storm, with a sediment concentration over 1,000 mg/L at the mouth of the river. Littleville Lake on the Westfield River was selected as a study site because of its flood control feature, which allows for the calculation of trapping efficiency in dammed rivers. Coring in the lake showed that there was …
Celebrating Extinction? The Disconnect Between Reality And Media Representation Of Bluefin Tuna In Japan, Gene Fukui
Celebrating Extinction? The Disconnect Between Reality And Media Representation Of Bluefin Tuna In Japan, Gene Fukui
Honors Papers
The Japanese media has perpetually glorified Bluefin tuna as the symbol of Japanese culture, cuisine, and national identity. Meanwhile, Bluefin tuna stocks are plummeting due to overfishing, and some species are international recognized as endangered. Blame is primarily placed on Japan, as the nation consumes 80% of Bluefin in the world and the government has admitted to overfishing several times. This has led to international environmental organizations and Western governments continually criticizing Japan for its unsustainable fishing practices.
This paper provides an explanation as to why there is no domestic movement within Japan to put an end to overfishing: the …
Anomie: Concept, Theory, Research Promise, Max Coleman
Anomie: Concept, Theory, Research Promise, Max Coleman
Honors Papers
The term anomie has declined in the sociology literature. Apart from brief mentions, it has not featured in the American Sociological Review for sixteen years. Moreover, the term has narrowed and is now used almost exclusively to discuss deviance. This project explores Durkheim's original use of the term, and whether modifications of his work--by Merton, Parsons, and others--are useful or muddling. We also present critiques of the term, evaluating them in light of Durkheim's intentions. Possible explanations for the decline of anomie theory are given, including academic explanations (e.g., classical sociology was replaced by newer theories like symbolic interactionism) and …
Polarization Analyzed Small Angle Neutron Scattering Of Ferrite Nanoparticles, Kathryn Hasz
Polarization Analyzed Small Angle Neutron Scattering Of Ferrite Nanoparticles, Kathryn Hasz
Honors Papers
Ferromagnetic nanoparticles offer a range of possible applications in nanotechnology, biomedical practices, and data storage, but important issues exist regarding their true magnetic structure. We have been investigating 9 nm diameter Fe3O4 nanoparticles and 11 nm diameter CoFe2O4 nanoparticles coated with an oleic acid shell. The nanoparticles were synthesized by solution chemistry methods and characterized by X-ray diffraction, SQUID, and vibrating sample magnetometry. Polarization Analyzed Small Angle Neutron Scattering (PASANS) was used under various temperatures and applied magnetic fields to investigate the magnetic structure of the particles. PASANS has revealed the iron oxide particles have a canted magnetic shell in …

"The Nurceryes For Church And Common-Wealth": A Reconstruction Of Childhood, Children, And The Family In Seventeenth-Century Puritan New England, William C. Gautier
Honors Papers
The changes in the understanding of childhood and children in colonial New England marked a swift and profound departure from English family norms prior to 1630. Casting off the intellectual baggage of childhood and the family mores that had accompanied the Puritans across the Atlantic, New Englanders reconceptualized children as central to the mission in the wilderness. In this thesis, I argue that New Englanders connected, both implicitly and explicitly, the well being of the colony's children directly with the future health of New England and sought to capitalize on this connection in unique, at times self-serving, ways. To best …
Anxious Seas: Reading Affect In Dazai And Murdoch, Joseph B. Lubitz
Anxious Seas: Reading Affect In Dazai And Murdoch, Joseph B. Lubitz
Honors Papers
This paper advances a re-reading of psychoanalytic “anxiety” as it is constructed through the modern novel, invoking contemporary affect theory, and finding an origin in the Heideggerian notions of Stimmung, Unheimlich and Angst. Looking at two works at the margins of the period and genre of the 20th Century modern novel that both share a fascination with introspective male protagonists--a Japanese “I-novel” called No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku) by Dazai Osamu, and The Sea, The Sea, by British writer Iris Murdoch--reveals a peculiar aesthetic questioning of subject and object specific to these works’ varied usages of ekphrasis and fascination with …
Inverted Linear Halbach Array For Separation Of Magnetic Nanoparticles, Chetan Poudel
Inverted Linear Halbach Array For Separation Of Magnetic Nanoparticles, Chetan Poudel
Honors Papers
Magnetic nanoparticles have unique physical and chemical properties, making them appealing candidates for biomedical applications. These applications depend critically on size and magnetic uniformity of the nanoparticles. Unfortunately, very few purification methods exist to sort nanoparticles based on their magnetic properties. Here, we describe an unusual approach to this problem through our construction of a device containing a linear array of permanent magnets in a Halbach configuration, where successive magnet blocks have their magnetization orientation at right angles. The array provides a large region of relatively low magnetic field, yet high magnetic field gradient where sorting of nanoparticles based on …
Addiction To Prescription Drugs: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis And Constructionist Study, Thomas Hallinan
Addiction To Prescription Drugs: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis And Constructionist Study, Thomas Hallinan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study presents an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the experience of becoming addicted to prescription medications. In addition, a constructionist analysis of the cultural, sociopolitical, and historical aspects of addiction are examined. The modern concept of addiction did not begin to come into being until the late nineteenth century. The twentieth century saw the beginning of government regulation and restrictions on the prescription, possession, and use of pharmaceuticals. The latter half of the twentieth century saw not only the boom of the pharmaceutical industry, but the explosion of addictive disorder and the rise of the Twelve Step program for addiction. …

Lands Council, Karuk Tribe, And The Great Environmental Divide In The Ninth Circuit, Michael C. Blumm, Maggie Hall
Natural Resources Journal
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the nation’s largest appellate court, with jurisdiction over 15 judicial districts and 61 million people—almost 20 percent of the nation’s population—spans from Alaska to Arizona, from Montana to Hawaii. The Ninth Circuit has a reputation for being an environmentally sensitive court, but the court is as diverse as the terrain over which it has jurisdiction. Due to its size, the court’s en banc reviews do not include all 29 judges but instead only panels of 11. Thus, Ninth Circuit en banc panels can reflect the kind of diversity of opinion they aim to reduce. …

Transmural Heterogeneity Of Cellular Level Cardiac Contractile Properties In Aging And Heart Failure, Premi Haynes
Transmural Heterogeneity Of Cellular Level Cardiac Contractile Properties In Aging And Heart Failure, Premi Haynes
Theses and Dissertations--Physiology
The left ventricle of the heart relaxes when it fills with blood and contracts to eject blood into circulation to meet the body’s metabolic demands. Dysfunction in either relaxation or contraction of the left ventricle can lead to heart failure. Transmural heterogeneity is thought to contribute to normal ventricular wall motion but it is not well understood how transmural modifications affect the failing left ventricle. The overall hypothesis of this dissertation is that normal left ventricles exhibit transmural heterogeneity in cellular level contractile properties and with aging and heart failure there are region-specific changes in cellular level contractile mechanisms.

“Of The Woman First Of All”: Walt Whitman And Women's Literary History, Vivian Delchamps
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis contemplates Walt Whitman's role in the lives of 19th and 20th century women writers and his significance to early American feminism. I consider the ways women inspired him to develop pro-feminist ideas about maternity, womanhood, and female liberation.
