Copper acetate and the ligands bis[3-(3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzylideneamino)phenyl] sulfone and bis[3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)phenyl] sulfone were reacted to form the complexes with 2:1 copper:ligand ratio, Cu2[B(t-Bu) (OMe)BAPS](µ-OCH3)2 (4) and with 2:2 copper:ligand ratio, Cu2[B(t-Bu)2BAPS]2 (5), respectively. Structures of 4 and 5 were determined based on IR, UV-Vis, and FAB-MS data in comparison with previously characterized related copper complexes. The two complexes 4 and 5 were utilized in the oxidation of the substrates 2,4- and 2,6-di-tertbutylphenol (dtbp) at -50C with H2O2 in CH2Cl2. The coupling products are preferred in both cases. For 2,4-dtbp, yields of 4,600% and 7,200% of 3,3’,5,5’-tetra-tert-butyl-2,2’- biphenol were achieved with the use …

Characterization Of Individual Charged Au25(Sg)18 Clusters And Their Enhancement Of Single Molecule Mass Spectrometry, Christopher Angevine
Characterization Of Individual Charged Au25(Sg)18 Clusters And Their Enhancement Of Single Molecule Mass Spectrometry, Christopher Angevine
Theses and Dissertations
Metallic quantum clusters are stable structures that can exhibit many useful magnetic, chemical, and optical properties. Developing clusters for specific applications requires accurate methods for characterizing their physical and chemical properties. Most cluster characterization methods are ensemble-based measurements that can only measure the average values of the cluster properties. Single cluster measurements improve upon this by yielding information about the distribution of cluster parameters. This investigation describes the initial results on a new approach to detecting and characterizing individual gold nanoclusters (Au25(SG)18) in an aqueous solution with nanopore-based resistive pulse sensing. We also present a new application where the clusters …
Developing C. Elegans As A Model To Study Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Jheesoo Ahn
Developing C. Elegans As A Model To Study Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Jheesoo Ahn
Theses and Dissertations
Caenorhabditis elegans has been studied as a model organism in various areas of biomedical research because it shares many conserved functions at molecular and genetic levels with humans. Specifically, it is an ideal organism to study heterogeneous metabolic syndromes such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) as C. elegans can be used to delineate molecular pathways that are at the core of its problems. A growing number of populations worldwide are faced with chronic T2DM, which also manifests several complications, such as blindness, neuropathy and cardiovascular diseases. Currently, metformin is the first-line drug of choice administered to treat T2DM. While …
The Study Of Au(Iii) Compounds And Their Interaction With Zinc Finger Proteins, Sarah Spell
The Study Of Au(Iii) Compounds And Their Interaction With Zinc Finger Proteins, Sarah Spell
Theses and Dissertations
Gold compounds have been used in medicine dating back as early as 2500 BC. Over the years gold(I) and gold(III) compounds have been used and designed to target rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and viral diseases. New drug targets have been found for gold compounds that give insight into their mechanisms of action. Here we focus on the synthesis of Au(III) compounds designed to selectively target zinc finger (ZF) proteins. ZF proteins exhibit a variety of functions, including transcription, DNA repair, and apoptosis. Displacement of the central zinc ion, along with mutation of coordinated amino acids can result in a loss of …

Understanding Ligand Binding, Selectivity And Functions On The G Protein-Coupled Receptors: A Molecular Modeling Approach, Saheem Zaidi
Theses and Dissertations
The assessment of target protein molecular structure provides a distinct advantage in the rational drug design process. The increasing number of available G protein-coupled receptor crystal structures has enabled utilization of a varied number of computational approaches for understanding the ligand-receptor interactions, ligand selectivity and even receptor response upon ligand binding. The following dissertation examines the results from three different projects with varied objectives – i) structural modeling of human C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5) and assessment of the ligand binding pocket of the receptor, ii) assessment of the selectivity profile of naltrexone derivatives on the three opioid receptors …
Gyalthang Southern Khams Tibetan: A Case Study Of Language Attitudes And Shift In Shangri-La, Simon Peters
Gyalthang Southern Khams Tibetan: A Case Study Of Language Attitudes And Shift In Shangri-La, Simon Peters
Anthós
I begin by offering some highlighting certain aspects of Tibetan language variation with particular attention to the local Gyalthang variety. In the following section I introduce Gyalthang’s touristic Old Town and the language situation there, exploring how the highly divergent nature and mutual unintelligibility of Tibetan language varieties inform stakeholder language attitudes. I place Gyalthang Tibetan into the UNESCO framework for assessing language vitality to explore the interactions of these attitudes and the implications they have for the maintenance of the local Tibetan variety. I conclude with a discussion of what language shift in Gyalthang reveals about language shift in …
Removal Efficiency Of Water Quality Pollutants In A Wet Detention Basin In Grand Forks, Nd, Abbie Marie Beaudry
Removal Efficiency Of Water Quality Pollutants In A Wet Detention Basin In Grand Forks, Nd, Abbie Marie Beaudry
Theses and Dissertations
It is hypothesized that the applied sampling techniques, water quality analysis, and statistical analysis predict pollutant removal efficiencies of the project site. Current practices in urban stormwater runoff are the design of systems that limit the developed peak discharge to less than or equal to the peak discharge of the pre-developed conditions. This is many times accomplished with the installation of stormwater retention, detention, or attenuation facilities that store the generated runoff from the drainage area. These are commonly known as structural Best Management Practices (BMPs). The City of Grand Forks, ND (City) implements BMPs into the stormwater management plans …

Data were analyzed for relationships among delirium symptoms and pain, and secondarily, 24-hour opioid intake controlling …
Suitability Of Lacunarity Measure For Blind Steganalysis, Ahmed Ibrahim
Suitability Of Lacunarity Measure For Blind Steganalysis, Ahmed Ibrahim
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Blind steganalysis performance is influenced by several factors including the features used for classification. This paper investigates the suitability of using lacunarity measure as a potential feature vectorfor blind steganalysis. Differential Box Counting (DBC) based lacunarity measure has been employed using the traditional sequential grid (SG) and a new radial strip (RS) approach. The performance of the multi-class SVM based classifier was unfortunately not what was expected. However, the findings show that both the SG and RS lacunarity produce enough discriminating features that warrant further research.

Using In-Class Versus Out-Of-Class Peer Workshops To Improve Presentational Speaking, Melissa A. Broeckelman-Post, Angela M. Hosek
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study sought to determine whether there is a difference in the effect of in-class and out-of-class peer workshops on Cognitive Learning, Affective Learning, speech grades, Public Speaking Anxiety, Connected Classroom Climate, and Perceived Workshop Value. This study used a within-subjects modified switching-replications design and found that there were no significant differences in the effects of the two types of workshops. However, students preferred in-class workshops, and there is slight evidence that there might be benefits for doing an in-class workshop first so that students can build trust and learn to give and receive better feedback before considering out-of-class workshops.

Background
Tissue-transglutaminase (TG2), a dual function G-protein, plays key roles in cell differentiation and migration. In our previous studies we reported the mechanism of TG2-induced cell differentiation. In present study, we explored the mechanism of how TG2 may be involved in cell migration.
Methods
To study the mechanism of TG2-mediated cell migration, we used neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) which do not express TG2, neuroblastoma cells expressing exogenous TG2 (SHYTG2), and pancreatic cancer cells which express high levels of endogenous TG2. Resveratrol, a natural compound previously shown to inhibit neuroblastoma and pancreatic cancer in the animal models, was utilized to …

Childhood Obesity In Asia: The Value Of Accurate Body Composition Methodology, Andrew P. Hills, Najat Mokhtar, Sharon Brownie, Nuala M. Byrne
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Childhood obesity, a significant global public health problem, affects an increasing number of low- and middle-income countries, including in Asia. The obesity epidemic has been fuelled by the rapid nutrition and physical activity transition with the availability of more energy-dense nutrient-poor foods and lifestyles of many children dominated by physical inactivity. During the growing years the pace and quality of grow this best quantified by a combination of anthropometric and body composition measures. However, where normative data are available, this has typically been collected on Caucasian children. To better define and characterise overweight and obesity in Asian children, and to …
Learning And Phototaxis In Belostoma Flumineum, Kaitlin Ann Garvey
Learning And Phototaxis In Belostoma Flumineum, Kaitlin Ann Garvey
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Learning allows organisms to adjust their behavior to adapt to a changing environment. The premise of this study was to investigate the capacity for learning in the giant waterbug, Belostoma flumineum Say (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae). As part of these experiments, I was able to identify an apparent directional phototaxis and to use it as motivation in an operant conditioning study. Belostoma flumineum and has been observed to exhibit negative directional phototaxis. The first two parts of this study suggest that B. flumineum has a statistically significant preference for shadowed over illuminated areas, as well as a preference for black substrate over …

ALS-tolerant grain sorghum cultivars are expected to be available for farmers within the next few years. Knowing that: (i) crosses between sorghum and shattercane are likely to occur resulting in crop-to-weed gene flow; (ii) ALS-susceptible shattercane X ALS-tolerant grain sorghum F1 hybrids (hybrids) were ultimately resistant to ALS-herbicides under field conditions; and (iii) hybrid fitness is equal to, or greater than, the wild parent, we conducted a greenhouse study to compare the competitive effect of shattercane and hybrid on sorghum, and whether or not herbicide application would influence the competitive ability of the hybrid …

Predictions of weed emergence can be used by practitioners to schedule POST weed management operations. Common sunflower seed from Kansas was used at six Midwestern U.S. sites to examine the variability that 16 climates had on common sunflower emergence. Nonlinear mixed effects models, using a flexible sigmoidal Weibull function that included thermal time, hydrothermal time, and a modified hydrothermal time (with accumulation starting from January 1 of each year), were developed to describe the emergence data. An iterative method was used to select an optimal base temperature (Tb) and base and ceiling soil matric potentials (ψb and …

False smut caused by Cercospora seminalis is an important disease of buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides) affecting seed production. The pathogen prevents normal caryopsis development and causes considerable yield loss and reduced seed germination. The current taxonomic placement of the false-smut causal pathogen in the genus Cercospora is incorrect based on its morphological characteristics and DNA phylogeny. In the present study the phylogenetic position of C. seminalis is clarified based on DNA sequence analysis of three loci namely the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, partial nuclear ribosomal large subunit (LSU) and partial sequences of the RNA polymerase II second largest …
