During the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, migrations and the advent of working bronze alloy materials triggered profound cultural, social, and economic shifts across Central Europe. As a result of this processes, many communities with distinct archaeological and cultural characteristics emerged during the Central European Early Bronze Age (between circa 2200/2100 and 1600/1500 BC) in Central Europe, and with the Middle Bronze Age of the Carpathian Basin (between 2000/1900 and 1500/1450 BC). Objective: To synthesize recent advancements in metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) treatment, evaluating their efficacy in improving neurological function, pain relief, survival, and quality of life.

Background: MSCC is an oncologic emergency caused by the progression of cancer to the spine and is prevalent in approximately 3-5% of all cancer patients, with a relatively higher incidence of breast, prostate, and lung cancers. MSCC can lead to irreversible paralysis due to loss of vital sensory and motor functions, thus requiring an immediate diagnosis and treatment.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common features of neurodegenerative disease (NDD) but are relatively understudied compared to cognition, especially regarding biomarkers. Further, emerging evidence describes the utility of systematic assessment of NPS across the cognitive continuum, even in advance of dementia. In this narrative review, we discuss the role of plasma biomarkers in relation to NPS across the cognitive continuum of unimpaired, subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. While Alzheimer's disease is the primary focus, vascular, Lewy body, and frontotemporal dementia etiologies are also discussed. The green transition is driving demand for engineering expertise in sectors such as renewable energy, construction, transport, and industrial decarbonisation. Projects are complex and interdisciplinary, and communication plays a central role. This report presents findings from 20 focus groups with 103 engineers across Europe examining how engineers communicate in green transition project contexts. Participants described a wide range of communicative tasks involving coordination, documentation, stakeholder engagement, and public communication.Engineers work across spoken, written, and digital modes, shifting between formal and informal styles, and adapting to varied audiences. Understanding the role of humans as 'ecosystem engineers' requires a deep-time perspective rooted in evolutionary history and the fossil record. However, no conceptual framework exists for studying the rise of ecosystem engineering in deep time, requiring us to consider effects that fall outside the scope of traditional definitions. Here, we present a new framework applicable to both modern and ancient engineering-type effects. We propose a new term - 'Earth system engineering' - to describe biological processes that alter the structure and function of planetary spheres, and which combines core tenets of ecosystem engineering, niche construction, and legacy effects. Despite national media attention and significant policy investment, substance use epidemics continue to impact Central Appalachia. Inequities affecting rural communities and persistent stigma create significant barriers to well-being and recovery. Recovery, however, is more than a healthcare issue; it is a relational and community-rooted process that must involve education, policy, and care. In this article, we reframe deficit-oriented conceptions of recovery to highlight the vital role of relational care and community collaboration in promoting wellness in rural Appalachia. Many K-12 schools function on limited budgets in their science departments, making it difficult to acquire, maintain, and update microscopes. While modern light microscopes are often complex, expensive, and require specialized training, they are based on simple principles of light. Microscopes enable us to observe objects too small for the naked eye and reveal intricate details. Introducing affordable, easy-to-use microscope adaptations early in education helps foster a deeper understanding of science and encourages young students to pursue STEM fields. As a consequence, budget allocations for environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate action are considerably insufficient. Against the backdrop of chronically low fertility rates in China and South Korea, this study investigates the relationship between female fertility intentions and family welfare policies in these two East Asian societies. It aims to identify the multidimensional challenges women face, analyze the disjuncture between existing fertility support policies and women's fundamental needs, and propose pathways for policy optimization. Employing a mixed-methods approach including online observation, critical discourse analysis of policy texts, and small-scale semi-structured interviews, the research reveals that women's fertility intentions are constrained by physiological risks, economic pressures, the cultural expectations of "motherhood," and conflicts with personal development. …

The child quantity-quality (CQQ) trade-off has been extensively studied in economic research since it was first introduced by Becker and Lewis in 1973. Studies have argued that the current economic circumstances and the presence of government aid in education and health determine the existence and extent of the CQQ trade-off. However, there is a dearth of empirically tested research on the possible decreasing effects of social programs on the CQQ trade-off. Highlights: What are the main findings? Knockout of Plin2 in microglia reduces lipid droplet burden, while enhancing phagocytic clearance capacity. Transcriptomic, bioenergetic, and lipidomic analyses reveal that loss of Plin2 reprograms microglial metabolism toward reduced TAG storage and improved mitochondrial resilience. What are the implications of the main findings? Plin2 serves as a key regulator of microglial lipid droplet stability, metabolic flexibility, and immune function under Alzheimer’s-relevant stressors. Targeting Plin2 may represent a therapeutic strategy to alleviate lipid droplet-driven dysfunction and restore microglial performance in aging and neurodegeneration. For much of modern history, the ocean was treated as a boundless resource rather than as a living system central to planetary climate stability. Scientific advances over the past two decades have revealed the ocean’s indispensable role in regulating climate by absorbing more than 90 percent of excess heat and nearly a third of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. Yet this buffering capacity is eroding as unchecked greenhouse gas emissions drive warming, acidification, and sea level rise. Protecting ocean health has therefore become inseparable from stabilizing the climate, making ocean stewardship and climate action an indivisible imperative.

This phenomenon will have major consequences for the environment and human systems, particularly in terms of water availability, increased natural hazards, slope and valley stability, hydroelectric power generation, tourism, culture, and local lifestyles. This study investigates how students learn to use information at a remote field station to prepare for roles as environmental researchers, climate advocates, and citizens. Using a semi-structured interview approach, the researchers examined the perceptions of twelve field station instructors on how their students engage with information to learn in a place-based educational context. Three interrelated themes emerged that demonstrate the varied ways in which students need to learn to use information: (1) Leveraging interdisciplinary lenses, where students integrate diverse perspectives to interpret environmental information; (2) Acculturating to field research practices, where students gain practical research and data skills through …

The small GTPase CDC42 promotes axon growth through actin filament polymerization and this growth is driven by axonal localization of the mRNA encoding the prenylated CDC42 isoform (Prenyl-Cdc42). Here, we show that axonal Prenyl-Cdc42 mRNA levels and the mRNA's translation are decreased by growth-inhibiting stimulation and increased by growth-promoting stimulation. In contrast, axonal RhoA mRNA transport and translation are increased by growth-inhibiting but unaffected by growth-promoting stimuli. Localized increase in KHSRP in response to growth inhibitory stimulation, through elevation of intracellular Ca2+, promotes decrease in axonal levels of Prenyl-Cdc42 mRNA. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly one-in-five Americans ages 65 and older (19%) were employed in 2023, a rate nearly twice that from 35 years ago. They’re also working more hours, on average, than in the recent past. In fact, more than three-in-five older workers (62%) work full time, an increase from the 47% working full time in 1987. Older workers today are also more educated and are more likely to be receiving employer-sponsored benefits, such as retirement savings plans and health insurance, than in earlier decades. Background

The lungs of squamate reptiles (lizards and snakes) are highly diverse, exhibiting single chambers, multiple chambers, transitional forms with two to three chambers, along with a suite of other anatomical features, including finger-like epithelial projections into the body cavity known as diverticulae. During embryonic development of the simple, sac-like lungs of anoles, the epithelium is pushed through the openings of a pulmonary smooth muscle mesh by the forces of luminal fluid pressure. This process of stress ball morphogenesis generates the faveolar epithelium typical of squamate lungs.
