Here-And-Now Learning In The Social Work Practice Classroom, Raquel Willerman
Here-And-Now Learning In The Social Work Practice Classroom, Raquel Willerman
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Here-and-now learning, also called experiential learning, holds a tenuous place in the curricula of graduate level social work programs. Students are not required to participate in experiential training groups and have few elective opportunities to do so. Though conscious awareness about things such as socio-location and environment is emphasized throughout social work academic programs, increasing one's awareness of unconscious aspects of self and other is not explicitly encouraged. However, recent trends in contemporary psychoanalytic theory point to the processing of the therapeutic relationship as the main mechanism of client change and to the therapist's subjectivity as having an importance equal …
Characterization Of The Role Of Salicylic Acid In Plant-Pathogen Interactions In Moss, Erica Grabinski
Characterization Of The Role Of Salicylic Acid In Plant-Pathogen Interactions In Moss, Erica Grabinski
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The central objective of this project is to explore defense systems that are induced in two moss species, Amblystegium serpens and Physcomitrella patens, upon inoculation with the fungus, Pythium irregulare. In vascular plants, systemic defense is associated with the plant hormone salicylic acid (SA). I hypothesize that when the moss are treated exogenously with SA, the organisms will undergo a systemic defense response, which will involve the induction of defense-related genes and increased resistance to future P. irregulare infection, that is directly correlated with the amount of hormone applied. If the role of SA in plant defense in A. serpens …

The Influence Of Light On Bryophytes And Their Response To Pathogen Infection: A Story Of Mnium Cuspidatum And Physcomitrella Patens, Bryce James Fawcett
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The influence of light on non-vascular plant-pathogen interactions were studied in two moss species, Mnium cuspidatum and Physcomitrella patens, using a fungal pathogen, Pythium irregulare, and a commonly used pathogenic elicitor (beta-glucan). The findings of this study suggest that light does playa role in moss defense but speci fic mechanisms remain unclear. In P. patens it was found that the defense gene AOe was up-regulated in the light compared to the dark when treated with beta-glucan elicitor. A phenotypic study of M. cuspidatum revealed that P. irregulare will infect and M cuspidatum will subsequently mount a defense response. Unexpectedly, samples …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Skeletal muscles (tongue, masseter, leg, intercostal, and diaphragmatic muscles) and brain samples of 100 sheep at slaughter were analysed for the presence of T. gondii tissue cysts along with serum IgG titres. Two methods of isolation by percoll gradient centrifugation and tissue microarray (TMA) technique with immunoperoxidase staining were used. Seropositivity was detected in 88% (88/100) of sheep sera analysed by indirect fluorescent antibody test. Tissue cysts were observed in 46 (52.3%, 46/88) and 15 (17%, 15/88) of the seropositive sheep with the isolation technique and TMA and immunoperoxidase staining, respectively. The diameters of the tissue cysts were 25–58 × …
Deriving The Snel-Descartes Law For A Single Photon, Randy Wayne
Deriving The Snel-Descartes Law For A Single Photon, Randy Wayne
Turkish Journal of Physics
The laws of reflection and refraction are typically derived using a dispersion relation that assumes that the angular frequency stays the same across a vacuum--dielectric interface and that the angular wave number increases. At the single photon level, this means that the total energy of the photon is conserved but the linear momentum is not. Here I derive the laws of reflection and refraction for a single photon using a dispersion relation that is consistent with the conservation of both total energy and linear momentum. To ensure that both conservation laws are upheld, the optical path length must be considered …

Opening The Machinery Of Private Order: Public International Law As A Form Of Private Ordering, Bryan H. Druzin
Opening The Machinery Of Private Order: Public International Law As A Form Of Private Ordering, Bryan H. Druzin
Saint Louis University Law Journal
Does legal order always need the enforcement power of the State? The concept of private order says no. Private ordering is traditionally defined as the coming together of non-governmental parties in voluntary, self-enforcing arrangements. This Article radically expands the concept of private order to include not only individuals, but also governments themselves, arguing that the ingredients for private ordering exist in both spheres. State actors, perhaps even more so than individuals, are producers of private order in that they regularly establish sophisticated legal order in the absence of centralized enforcement. The Article constructs a theory of private order which focuses …
The Problem With Neurolaw, David W. Opderbeck
The Problem With Neurolaw, David W. Opderbeck
Saint Louis University Law Journal
This Article describes and critiques the increasingly popular program of reductive neuroLaw. Law has irrevocably entered the age of neuroscience. Various institutes and conferences are devoted to questions about the relation between neuroscience and legal procedures and doctrines. Most of the new “neuroLaw” scholarship focuses on evidentiary and related issues, and is important and beneficial. But some versions of reductive neuroLaw are frightening. Although they claim to liberate us from false conceptions of ourselves and to open new spaces for more scientific applications of the law, they end up stripping away all notions of “selves” and of “law.” This Article …

From Passive Receptacles To Active Contenders: Ovulation And Intrasexual Competition In Human Females, Andres E. Munoz 14
From Passive Receptacles To Active Contenders: Ovulation And Intrasexual Competition In Human Females, Andres E. Munoz 14
Honor Scholar Theses
Recent evidence has suggested that ovulation in humans might be accompanied by subtle cues. Furthermore, several studies have suggested that women engage in intrasexual competition, or competition with members of the same sex, with the aim of obtaining high quality mates. This competition involves the use of complex strategies including self-promotion and rival derogation. The link between ovulation and intrasexual competition remains largely underexplored, although a few studies have suggested that intrasexual competition might become intensified during ovulation. This paper explores the relationship between ovulatory cue detection and intrasexual competition and outlines two research proposals for future analysis of this …
Induction Of A Type I Interferon Signature In Normal Human Monocytes By Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents: Comparison Of Linear And Macrocyclic Agents., Peter J. Wermuth, Sergio A. Jimenez
Induction Of A Type I Interferon Signature In Normal Human Monocytes By Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents: Comparison Of Linear And Macrocyclic Agents., Peter J. Wermuth, Sergio A. Jimenez
Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations
The gadolinium-based contrast agent (GdBCA) Omniscan activates human macrophages through Toll-like receptor (TLR)-4 and TLR-7 signalling. To explore the mechanisms responsible we compared the ability of linear and macrocyclic GdBCA to induce a type I interferon signature and a proinflammatory/profibrotic phenotype in normal human monocytes in vitro. Expression of genes associated with type I interferon signalling and inflammation and production of their corresponding proteins were determined. Both linear and macrocyclic GdBCA stimulated expression of multiple type I interferon-regulated genes and the expression of numerous chemokines, cytokines and growth factors in normal human peripheral blood monocytes. There was no correlation between …

Rosenberg, George A. Oyler, Bradley J.S.C. Olson, Donald P. Weeks
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Background: Cell walls are essential for most bacteria, archaea, fungi, algae and land plants to provide shape, structural integrity and protection from numerous biotic and abiotic environmental factors. In the case of eukaryotic algae, relatively little is known of the composition, structure or mechanisms of assembly of cell walls in individual species or between species and how these differences enable algae to inhabit a great diversity of environments. In this paper we describe the use of camelid antibody fragments (VHHs) and a streamlined ELISA assay as powerful new tools for obtaining mono-specific reagents for detecting individual algal cell wall components …

Aims: Acquisition and detoxification of metal ions are vital biological processes. Given the requirement of metallochaperones in cellular copper distribution and metallation of cuproproteins, this study investigates whether the metallochaperones also deliver metal ions for transporters functioning in metal detoxification. Results: Resistance to excess cadmium and copper of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is conferred by PCA1 and CaCRP1 metal efflux P-type ATPases, respectively, does not rely on known metallochaperones, Atx1p, Ccs1p, and Cox17p. Copper deficiency induced by the expression of CaCRP1 encoding a copper exporter occurs in the absence of Atx1p. Intriguingly, CCS1 encoding the copper chaperone for superoxide …

Doctrine Of Substantial Overbreadth: A Better Prescription For Strong Medicine In Missouri, The , Keith H. Holland
Missouri Law Review
Considering prior cases where Missouri courts have applied the doctrine of substantial overbreadth, however, State v. Vaughn may represent a significant step towards a more well-defined and consistent approach to the doctrine. Even though Vaughn does not clearly resolve all of the inconsistencies in Missouri's application of the overbreadth doctrine, it represents a necessary and important development in the way the doctrine is applied by Missouri courts.

Two hypotheses for how conditions for larval mosquitoes affect vectorial capacity make opposite predictions about the relationship of adult size and frequency of infection with vector-borne pathogens. Competition among larvae produces small adult females. The competition-susceptibility hypothesis postulates that small females are more susceptible to infection and predicts frequency of infection should decrease with size. The competition-longevity hypothesis postulates that small females have lower longevity and lower probability of becoming competent to transmit the pathogen and thus predicts frequency of infection should increase with size. We tested these hypotheses for Aedes aegypti in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during a dengue …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Imazamox is an herbicide intensively used in the peanut fields of Turkey. Carbon and nitrogen mineralizations were determined at 20 °C to evaluate the effects of the herbicide in soils humidified to 60% and 80% of field capacity (FC) over 45 days. Three doses of this herbicide [recommended dose (RD, 10 mg kg^{-1}), 2× RD, and 4× RD] were added to soils without any previous imazamox application (NI) and to peanut soils with previous applications of imazamox (I). Carbon mineralization, determined by CO2 respiration, at RD of I soil at 80% humidity was higher than that of the other herbicide …

Seven different nonlinear height (h)-diameter (d) models were developed and compared for brutian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.), black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold), and Taurus cedar (Cedrus libani A.Rich.) in southern Turkey. Residual analysis was conducted to identify the error structure. A weighting factor of w_i =1/d was found to be appropriate for achieving the equal error variance assumption. The performance of the models was compared and evaluated based on 6 statistical criteria and residual analysis. Results suggested that the Gompertz model was superior to the other models in terms of its predictive ability. These tree species were located throughout the …
Intention To Screen For Sexually Transmitted Infections: A Terror Management Health Model Perspective, Bernadette Jones
Intention To Screen For Sexually Transmitted Infections: A Terror Management Health Model Perspective, Bernadette Jones
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present studies assessed intention and willingness to screen for sexually transmitted infections from a Terror Management Health Model perspective. TMHM proposes that when facing a health decision, people tend to cling to what increases their self-esteem rather than behave in a way that would actually minimize the health threat. The first study hypothesized that exposure to a brochure rife with reminders of “creatureliness” would increase death thought accessibility, while a control brochure would not. No significant difference was found. The second study hypothesized that those with low body-esteem would cling more to what todays culture deems an acceptable body …
The Emergence Of The New Woman In Victorian Children's And Family Literature, Geneva Korykowski
The Emergence Of The New Woman In Victorian Children's And Family Literature, Geneva Korykowski
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In the Victorian era, the first wave of feminism surfaced in several influential family novels that modeled the "New Woman" instead of reinstating the "Old Girl." Characters from the novels Little Women, Villette, Jane Eyre, and The Little Lychetts as they modernize the Victorian women in the fin de siecle. Now we see a trend similar to first wave feminism beginning to happen with biology, The Hunger Games and Will Grayson, Will Grayson show examples of how a "New Man" is defined in contemporary society.
