Turnip Crinkle Virus Coat Protein Inhibits The Basal Immune Response To Virus Invasion In Arabidopsis By Binding To The Nac Transcription Factor Tip, Teresa Donze, Feng Qu, Paul Twigg, T. Jack Morris
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Turnip crinkle virus (TCV) has been shown to interact with a NAC transcription factor, TIP, of Arabidopsis thaliana, via its coat protein (CP). This interaction correlates with the resistance response manifested in TCV-resistant Arabidopsis ecotype Di-17. We report that failure of a mutated CP to interact with TIP triggered the corresponding TCV mutant (R6A) to cause more severe symptoms in the TCV-susceptible ecotype Col-0. We hypothesized that TCV regulates antiviral basal immunity through TIP-CP interaction. Consistent with this hypothesis, we found that the rate of accumulation of R6A was measurably slower than wild-type TCV over the course of an …

Pride In Istanbul, Susan C. Pearce
Pride In Istanbul, Susan C. Pearce
Societies Without Borders
In June of 2013, Istanbul, Turkey held its annual Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Pride parade. This year’s parade was performed in a particular historical context: in the midst of an anti-government uprising that had begun in Istanbul and spread throughout Turkey. This context loaned a particular flavor to the Pride parade, and there was a reciprocity between the recent protest movement and LGBT activism. These field notes describe the June 2013 parade and its relationship to the socio-political context, drawing from these observations some preliminary conclusions regarding human rights and gender as Turkey interacts with transnational human rights regimes such …

Use Of Social Media By Indiana Principals And Superintendents, Robert Stephen Griffin Jr.
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the use of social media by Indiana K-12 principals and superintendents. The use of social media has become prevalent both as a social and professional tool. The social media movement has evolved quickly over the past five years; however, schools and school districts have been slow to effectively utilize this tool out of fear, apprehension, and ignorance. The opportunity to explore social media as a professional tool byEducational leaders was opportune and timely as this tool becomes a multi-purpose tool in today's society. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t test, and one-way ANOVAs …
Sorting Through The Muc: A Characterization Of Muc1 In Acquired Chemo-Resistance In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Alexandria Wells
Sorting Through The Muc: A Characterization Of Muc1 In Acquired Chemo-Resistance In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Alexandria Wells
Theses & ETDs
Mucin 1 (MUC1) is a glycoprotein expressed on the apical surface of epithelial cells in organs such as the lung. Typically upregulated during cases of acute inflammation, an overexpression of MUC1 has been observed in cases of acquired resistance to Tumor Necrosis Factor-Related Apoptosis Inducing Ligand (TRAIL) in non-small cell lung cancer. The ability of cancer cells to gain resistance to chemotherapy treatments has been attributed to their ability to evade apoptosis initiated by ligands like TRAIL through the dysregulation of otherwise harmless proteins, such as MUC1. A decrease in catalase expression, coupled by an increase in the presence of …

Intellectual Property Rights: Understanding Policy Formation, Policy Division, And State Action, Wyatt Weisenberg
Theses & ETDs
This thesis portfolio outlines the manner in which intellectual property rights (IPR) policies form, evolve, and are diffused into the international regime. It advances that the formation and evolution of IPR policies occur largely as a function of the economy. This process is evident both domestically and internationally, with a major policy division occurring between industrialized and developing states. This portfolio juxtaposes the evolution of the patent system in the United States of America with increases in economic activity from the Colonial period until 1930. Turning towards the international sphere, this thesis portfolio explicitly details the international IPR policy division …

To Be Male: Homophobia, Sexism, And The Production Of “Masculine” Boys, Clifford Rosky
To Be Male: Homophobia, Sexism, And The Production Of “Masculine” Boys, Clifford Rosky
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
This chapter is about the relationship between homophobia and sexism in family law. By conducting an empirical analysis of custody and visitation cases, it shows that stereotypes about the children of lesbian and gay parents are both sexist and homophobic. In some cases, the relationship between homophobia and sexism becomes especially obvious, when stereotypes explicitly conflate the sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender roles of children and parents. By looking more closely, however, we can find more subtle evidence of this relationship in a much wider range of cases, wherever stereotypes of the children of lesbian and gay parents appear. …

Threshold concepts (TCs) are concepts that, when mastered, represent a transformed understanding of a discipline without which the learner cannot progress. We have undertaken a process involving more than 75 faculty members and 50 undergraduate students to identify a working list of TCs for biochemistry. The process of identifying TCs for biochemistry was modeled on extensive work related to TCs across a range of disciplines and included faculty workshops and student interviews. Using an iterative process, we prioritized five concepts on which to focus future development of instructional materials. Broadly defined, the concepts are steady state, biochemical pathway dynamics and …

Osteoporosis is a medical condition affecting men and women of different age groups and populations. The compromised bone quality caused by this disease represents an important challenge when a surgical procedure (e.g., spinal fusion) is needed after failure of conservative treatments. Different pedicle screw designs and instrumentation techniques have been explored to enhance spinal device fixation in bone of compromised quality. These include alterations of screw thread design, optimization of pilot hole size for non-self-tapping screws, modification of the implant’s trajectory, and bone cement augmentation. While the true benefits and limitations of any procedure may not be realized until they …

Diet Of The Antillean Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Manatus) In Belize, Central America, Aarin Conrad Allen
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Belize has been identified as an important location for Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus), harboring the highest known population density of this subspecies. Information about their dietary habit is important in determining habitat requirements and aiding in conservation efforts. The main objective of this study was to identify the key plant species consumed by manatees in Belize and to establish differences in diet based on location, sex, size classification, and season. Samples were collected from two different locations within Belize where manatees are known to aggregate: Southern Lagoon and the Drowned Cayes off of Belize City. The contents …

Time To Competitive Exclusion, Andrew M. Kramer, John M. Drake
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
A predictive theory of population extinction for natural populations requires integrating the effects of stochasticity with the interactions engaged in with populations of other species. The theory of competitive exclusion predicts that inferior competitors for a limiting resource will be driven to extinction, but the effects of resource competition on time to extinction have not been examined. We studied a stochastic version of Tilman's resource competition model to examine two species competition-driven extinction. Simulations showed that competitive imbalance, population size and demographic rates of the “inferior” competitor were the most important determinants of mean extinction time, while factors including resource …
Plant Response To 14 Engineered Log Jams On The North Fork Toutle River, Wa Sediment Plain, Todd Ashley
Plant Response To 14 Engineered Log Jams On The North Fork Toutle River, Wa Sediment Plain, Todd Ashley
Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports
I sought to evaluate the vegetative response to the installation of the 14 engineered log jams (ELJs) on the North Fork Toutle River (NFTR) Sediment Plain. The NFTR sediment plain is constantly being reworked due to channel bank erosion caused by a combination of processes including flow erosion and gravitational mass failure. Vegetation has the ability to protect the bank from erosion as well as providing other stabilizing effects. The ELJ structures were designed in part to protect localized areas of the sediment plain and allow vegetated islands to develop. The purpose of these vegetated islands is to trap sand …

Force-Feedback High-Speed Atomic Force Microscope, Byung I. Kim, Ryan D. Boehm
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
High-speed atomic force microscopy (HSAFM) has enabled researchers to view the nanometer-scale dynamic behavior of individual biological and bio-relevant molecules at a molecular-level resolution under physiologically relevant time scales, which is the realization of a dream in life sciences. These high-speed imaging applications now extend to the cellular/bacterial systems with the use of a smaller cantilever. By reducing the sizes of the HSAFM cantilevers by a factor of ten, systems have demonstrated image speeds up to 0.1 frames per second for larger biological systems such as bacteria. However, this imaging speed is insufficient to understand many rapid large-scale biological phenomena. …

The “Female Fertility–Social Stratification–Hypergyny” Hypothesis Of Male Homosexual Preference: Factual, Conceptual And Methodological Errors In Barthes Et Al. [Commentary], Doug P. Vanderlaan, Zachary H. Garfield, Melissa J. Garfield, Jean-Baptiste Leca, Paul L. Vasey, Raymond B. Hames
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Barthes, Godelle, and Raymond (2013, Evolution and Human Behavior, 34, 155–163) proposed a hypothesis to (1) identify the process by which genes influencing male homosexual preference (MHP) are passed on over evolutionary time, and (2) account for why life-course persistent MHP is restricted to humans. According to their hypothesis, certain genes lower reproductive success in male carriers by causing MHP, but these same genes promote fertility in female carriers (i.e., sexual antagonism). Barthes et al. proposed that the female carriers of genes for MHP have physical cues of fertility (i.e., beauty) that help them marry up the social class …

Movement As A Means Of Social (Re)Production: Using Gis To Measure Social Integration Across Urban Landscapes, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Kristin Landau
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
This paper contributes to the archaeological study of movement in urban environments where built forms and natural features worked together to play a key role in structuring human mobility. We propose an analytical method using least cost analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS) to empirically measure social integration. The method defines mobility as the potential for pedestrian movement, and identifies locations where people were most likely to walk to or through in a landscape. The calculated mobility data are then employed to identify with whom people were most likely to interact and the degree to which they were socially connected …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Obesity in human populations, currently a serious health concern, is considered to be the consequence of an energy imbalance in which more energy in calories is consumed than is expended. We used interval mapping techniques to investigate the genetic basis of a number of energy balance traits in an F11 advanced intercross population of mice created from an original intercross of lines selected for increased and decreased heat loss. We uncovered a total of 137 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for these traits at 41 unique sites on 18 of the 20 chromosomes in the mouse genome, with X-linked QTLs …

Quality Of Life, Perceptions Of Change, And Psychological Well-Being Of The Elderly Population In Small Rural Towns In The Midwest, Rodrigo Cantarero, James J. Potter
Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
This study examines the quality of life of the elderly residents of two rural Nebraska towns, both having experienced a large increase in population. The study examines how the residents’ perception of changes in the community affect their view of quality of life, and identifies determinants of psy-chological well-being for these elderly residents. The results are compared to the non-elderly resi-dents of these two communities for purposes of contrast. A face-to-face survey of the residents addressed physical, social/cultural, economic, and service issues. Both correlation and regression were used to analyze the data. The quality of life of the elderly residents …

The Middle Eocene Climatic Optimum (MECO; ~ 40 million years ago [Ma]) is one of the most prominent transient global warming events in the Paleogene. Although the event is well documented in geochemical and isotopic proxy records at many locations, the marine biotic response to the MECO remains poorly constrained. We present new high-resolution, quantitative records of siliceous microplankton assemblages from the MECO interval of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1051 in the subtropical western North Atlantic Ocean, which are interpreted in the context of published foraminiferal and bulk carbonate stable isotope (δ18O and δ13C) records. …
