Bacon's Swamp- Ghost Of A Central Indiana Natural Area Past, Rebecca W. Dolan Jan 2014

Bacon's Swamp- Ghost Of A Central Indiana Natural Area Past, Rebecca W. Dolan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Bacon’s Swamp was identified in the 1920s as a ca. 12 ha glacial kettle lake bog system at the southernmost limits of these habitats in Indiana. Located just 9.6 km from the center of Indianapolis, the site was all but destroyed in the mid-20th century by urban expansion. Prior to habitat conversion at the site, Bacon’s Swamp was a frequent location for Butler University ecology class field trips and student research projects. Herbarium specimens and published inventory records allow for analysis of the historical vegetation of Bacon’s Swamp using modern techniques. Floristic Quality Assessment applied to these historical records reveals …

Nitrogen Fertilization Has A Stronger Effect On Soil Nitrogen-Fixing Bacterial Communities Than Elevated Atmospheric Co2, Sean T. Berthrong, Chris M. Yeager, Laverne Gallegos-Graves, Blaire Steven, Stephanie A. Eichorst, Robert B. Jackson, Cheryl R. Kuske

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Biological nitrogen fixation is the primary supply of N to most ecosystems, yet there is considerable uncertainty about how N-fixing bacteria will respond to global change factors such as increasing atmospheric CO2 and N deposition. Using the nifH gene as a molecular marker, we studied how the community structure of N-fixing soil bacteria from temperate pine, aspen, and sweet gum stands and a brackish tidal marsh responded to multiyear elevated CO2 conditions. We also examined how N availability, specifically, N fertilization, interacted with elevated CO2 to affect these communities in the temperate pine forest. Based on data …

Mythicism And The Mainstream: The Rhetoric And Realities Of Academic Freedom, James F. Mcgrath Jan 2014

Mythicism And The Mainstream: The Rhetoric And Realities Of Academic Freedom, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

But when it comes to the mythicism proffered by people whose knowledge of relevant languages, historical texts, ancient cultures, and other such data is minimal or non-existent, and whose works consist only of web pages and self-published books, scholars are under no obligation to waste their valuable time on such matters any more than on the countless other topics which web sites and self-published books address, and which a quick perusal shows to be bunk.

Did Androgen-Binding Protein Paralogs Undergo Neo- And/Or Subfunctionalization As The Abp Gene Region Expanded In The Mouse Genome?, Robert C. Karn, Amanda G. Chung, Christina M. Laukaitis Jan 2014

Did Androgen-Binding Protein Paralogs Undergo Neo- And/Or Subfunctionalization As The Abp Gene Region Expanded In The Mouse Genome?, Robert C. Karn, Amanda G. Chung, Christina M. Laukaitis

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Androgen-binding protein (Abp) region of the mouse genome contains 30 Abpa genes encoding alpha subunits and 34 Abpbg genes encoding betagamma subunits, their products forming dimers composed of an alpha and a betagamma subunit. We endeavored to determine how many Abp genes are expressed as proteins in tears and saliva, and as transcripts in the exocrine glands producing them. Using standard PCR, we amplified Abp transcripts from cDNA libraries of C57BL/6 mice and found fifteen Abp gene transcripts in the lacrimal gland and five in the submandibular gland. Proteomic analyses identified proteins corresponding to eleven of the …

Liberty, Equality, And Parentage In The Era Of Posthumous Conception, Jessica Knouse Jan 2014

Liberty, Equality, And Parentage In The Era Of Posthumous Conception, Jessica Knouse

Journal of Law and Health

This essay uses Astrue v. Capato as a platform to examine how liberty and equality interact within parent-child relationships. It observes that as prospective parents have experienced an increase in liberty due to new reproductive technologies the children they create have not necessarily experienced a commensurate increase in equality. The law’s myopic focus on parent-child relationships rather than provider-dependent relationships renders posthumously conceived children unequal along multiple dimensions. They may have not only one provider, but also only one parent. This essay argues that shifting the law’s focus away from identifying parents and towards identifying providers would mitigate the status …

Posthumously Conceived Children: An International And Human Rights Perspective , Maya Sabatello Jan 2014

Posthumously Conceived Children: An International And Human Rights Perspective , Maya Sabatello

Journal of Law and Health

This essay considers posthumous conception from an international and child-centered approach. After a sketch in Part I of the phenomenon of posthumous conception and the complexities it evokes, Part II examines the types of issues arising in court cases concerning posthumous conception. Part III considers how courts in their rulings have addressed the welfare and best interests of posthumously conceived children and analyzes the scope and meaning of relevant decisions. Part IV looks into children’s rights or interests raised in those judicial decisions: parental acknowledgement, family structures, identity harm, and inheritance and social benefits. This part draws on the Convention …

Who Can Afford It?: The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act's Failure To Regulate Excessive Cost-Sharing Of Prescription Biologic Drugs , Michael Callam

Journal of Law and Health

This Note will discuss how the PPACA’s abbreviated approval pathway for biological products creates an expedited procedure to bring less expensive biologic drugs to the market, but ultimately fails to make those biologic drugs affordable because of its lack of provisions limiting insurers’ use of excessive cost-sharing requirements. Part II provides an overview of prescription drugs, compares biologics with traditional prescription drugs, and provides a brief legislative history of prescription drug laws. Part III analyzes the impact of the abbreviated approval pathway on biologic drugs’ costs to prescribed patients. It also examines the PPACA’s effects on biologics inclusion into health …

The Use Of Clickers To Assess Knowledge In Foreign Language Classes And Their Failure To Increase Reading Compliance, Juan P. Rodríguez Prieto Jan 2014

The Use Of Clickers To Assess Knowledge In Foreign Language Classes And Their Failure To Increase Reading Compliance, Juan P. Rodríguez Prieto

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This is the first quantitative research on reading compliance in FL courses. It investigated the effect of clickers on learning gains for regularly assigned readings, determined by 16 quiz grades during a semester. 38 intermediate L2 Spanish students assigned to two group conditions also completed a questionnaire at the end of the semester about their preparedness for the quizzes and their opinions about the use of clickers. Results indicated that participants in the Clicker condition obtained significantly lower grades in the quizzes than those in the Paper and Pencil one, despite clickers receiving positive feedback and comments, and even though …

Scientific Method In Meteorology, Triberiu Popa Jan 2014

Scientific Method In Meteorology, Triberiu Popa

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

This article explores the main aspects of Aristotle’s scientific method in Meteorology IV. Dispositional properties such as solidifiability or combustibility play a dominant role in Meteor. IV (a) in virtue of their central place in the generic division of homoeomers, based on successive differentiation and multiple differentiae, and (b) in virtue of their role in revealing otherwise undetectable characteristics of uniform materials (composition and physical structure). While Aristotle often starts with accounts of ingredients and their ratio (e.g., solids that contain a significant amount of water are liquefiable), the natural direction of his investigation is …

Queensland research and reviews

This paper was commissioned to inform the Review of Queensland Senior Assessment and School Reporting and Tertiary Entrance Processes undertaken by Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). Specifically, the lead Investigator was tasked to address the hypothesis that the Queensland Studies Authority’s (QSA, also referred to as system) approach to specifying assessment criteria and standards remains dominant and salient across disciplines. It was also to consider the holistic and analytic judgement models that operate in District and State review panels. The original aims were therefore to consider the nature and function of standards in informing teacher judgements as reported through …

Homing By Path Integration When A Locomotion Trajectory Crosses Itself, Naohide Yamamoto, Jayleen A. Meléndez, Derek T. Menzies Jan 2014

Homing By Path Integration When A Locomotion Trajectory Crosses Itself, Naohide Yamamoto, Jayleen A. Meléndez, Derek T. Menzies

Psychology Faculty Publications

Path integration is a process with which navigators derive their current position and orientation by integrating self-motion signals along a locomotion trajectory. It has been suggested that path integration becomes disproportionately erroneous when the trajectory crosses itself. However, there is a possibility that this previous finding was confounded by effects of the length of a traveled path and the amount of turns experienced along the path, two factors that are known to affect path integration performance. The present study was designed to investigate whether the crossover of a locomotion trajectory truly increases errors of path integration. In an experiment, blindfolded …

Overwintering Biology And Tests Of Trap And Relocate As A Conservation Measure For Burying Beetles, W. Wyatt Hoback, Adrienne Conley Jan 2014

Overwintering Biology And Tests Of Trap And Relocate As A Conservation Measure For Burying Beetles, W. Wyatt Hoback, Adrienne Conley

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

Burying beetles are carrion beetles and utilize dead animal carcasses for feeding and reproductive efforts. They assist with decomposition, prevent the spread of disease, and reduce the number of pest species. The largest species of carrion beetle, the American burying beetle, is a federally endangered insect and its distribution has been reduced by 90%. The conservation of this species is important in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Overwintering biology and trap and relocation were studied to determine how this beetle survives freezing temperatures and to find whether trap and relocation could be a suitable conservation management measure.

Trap and relocation is …

What Can Medicine Teach The Social Sciences?, Lee Mcintyre Jan 2014

What Can Medicine Teach The Social Sciences?, Lee Mcintyre

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

In a field as slow to change as the law, it is often helpful to inject fresh perspectives from other disciplines. As different as legal analysis might be from that found in the medical and social sciences, they are all ultimately concerned with the pursuit of objectivity. Furthermore, in each of these fields, the pursuit of academic and practical goals are permeated and influenced by the values of those that seek to achieve them. Indeed, both the law and the social sciences in particular are fundamentally concerned with finding ways of distilling logic and order from the complexities of human …

Three-Parent Ivf And Its Effect On Parental Rights, Padmini Cheruvu Jan 2014

Three-Parent Ivf And Its Effect On Parental Rights, Padmini Cheruvu

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

Three-parent in vitro fertilization (“IVF”) is a controversial procedure that offers the possibility of preventing the inheritance of genetically caused mitochondrial disease, sparing future generations from a range of incapacitating conditions. Due to the use of a controversial form of cloning technology, the procedure is currently banned in both the United Kingdom and the United States. If the procedure was to be made legal in the United States, it is unclear how the states would legally view the donor parent. This note argues that the rights that donor parents in three-parent IVF procedures receive will most likely parallel the rights …

Extreme Value Analysis Of Rainfall Events Over The Kennedy Space Center Complex, Adam David Schnapp Jan 2014

Extreme Value Analysis Of Rainfall Events Over The Kennedy Space Center Complex, Adam David Schnapp

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The use of observational datasets to determine the occurrence frequencies of extreme weather events has gained a lot of recent interest due to concerns about the potential regional impacts from global climate change. Extreme-value theory can quantify the return frequency of the most extreme events, using climatologically short data sets and the assumption that such short climatological periods are stationary. However, the resulting analyses must be used with caution since they may not accurately reflect the potential of extreme events in the future due to climate change and variability. Accurately predicting extreme-event likelihood is important for building realistic long-range planning …

Escaping From Lawyers' Prison Of Fear, John Lande Jan 2014

Escaping From Lawyers' Prison Of Fear, John Lande

Faculty Publications

Lawyers regularly experience numerous fears endemic to their work. This is not surprising considering that lawyers generally operate in environments that frequently stimulate many fears. Lawyers’ fears can lead them to enhance their performance due to increased preparation and effective “thinking on their feet.” Fear is problematic when it is out of proportion to actual threats, is expressed inappropriately, or is chronically unaddressed effectively. It can lead to sub-optimal and counterproductive performance through paralysis, ritualized behavior, or inappropriate aggression. Some lawyers’ fears unnecessarily prevent them from performing well, producing good results for clients, earning more income, and experiencing greater satisfaction …

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

TRPV1t, a variant of the transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) has been proposed as a constitutively active, non-selective cation channel as a putative amiloride-insensitive salt taste receptor and shares many properties with TRPV1. Based on our previous chorda tympani taste nerve recordings in rodents and human sensory evaluations, we proposed that N-geranylcyclopropylcarboxamide (NGCC), a novel synthetic compound, acts as a salt taste enhancer by modulating the amiloride/benzamil-insensitive Na+ entry pathways. As an extension of this work, we investigated NGCC-induced human TRPV1 (hTRPV1) activation using a Ca2+-flux signaling assay in cultured cells. NGCC enhanced Ca2+ influx in hTRPV1-expressing cells in …
