Survival Of Hatchery Gulf Sturgeon (Acipenser Oxyrinchus Desotoi Mitchill, 1815) In The Suwannee River, Florida: A 19-Year Evaluation, K. J. Sulak, M. T. Randall, J. P. Clugston Feb 2014

Survival Of Hatchery Gulf Sturgeon (Acipenser Oxyrinchus Desotoi Mitchill, 1815) In The Suwannee River, Florida: A 19-Year Evaluation, K. J. Sulak, M. T. Randall, J. P. Clugston

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

An experimental release of 1192 hatchery-reared, individually PIT tagged, 220 days old (296–337 mm TL) Gulf sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi, was undertaken in 1992 in the Suwannee River, Florida. The original objectives of the 1992 release experiment were to: (1) evaluate survival rate of cultured Gulf sturgeon in the wild vs survival rate of their wild 1992 cohort counterparts, (2) determine the differential effect of release site within the river upon long-term survival, and (3) evaluate comparative growth rates of recaptured hatchery vs captured wild 1992 cohort Gulf sturgeon. The present investigation addressed those original objectives, plus an additional fourth …

The Global Family Begins At Conception: Reconfiguring Feminist Theory To Include Intentionally Unmarried Heterosexual Women Who Choose Not To Become Pregnant, Kimberly Petrovic Feb 2014

The Global Family Begins At Conception: Reconfiguring Feminist Theory To Include Intentionally Unmarried Heterosexual Women Who Choose Not To Become Pregnant, Kimberly Petrovic

Journal of International Women's Studies

The global family begins at conception. Every person born into this world enters into a global society in which beliefs and ideas about the meaning of life and its purpose are shared, regardless of one’s country of origin or the demographic characteristics of one’s birth parents. Ultimately, we are related to one another. Our genetics do not differ significantly; there is no gene for race. If the global family begins at conception, then how might the meaning of a ‘global family’ cause us to rethink our antiquated ideas about conception, marriage, and parenting, particularly for heterosexual women who choose to …

Pinched Lives And Stolen Dreams In Arab Feminist Short Stories, Rula Quawas Feb 2014

Pinched Lives And Stolen Dreams In Arab Feminist Short Stories, Rula Quawas

Journal of International Women's Studies

The short fiction of Arab women writers epitomizes their penetrating feminist voices and contributes to our understanding of the diversity of Arab women short-story writing in the second half of the twentieth century. This fiction, which should be read with an open mind and with a nod to the culture and social context in which it is born, cradled and bred, deals with family relations in the Arab world and the ways in which the members of these families show each other love, or perhaps neglect to do so, with social and cultural dominion that emphasizes the collective and downplays …

The 'New Woman' Gender Roles And Urban Modernism In Interwar Berlin And Shanghai, Carol Schmid Feb 2014

The 'New Woman' Gender Roles And Urban Modernism In Interwar Berlin And Shanghai, Carol Schmid

Journal of International Women's Studies

During the interwar period, urban modernism was connected to opposing ideals of womanhood. On the one hand, women’s participation in a culture of leisure, consumption and body consciousness created images of the New Women in Berlin and Shanghai during the 1920s and early 1930s. On the other hand, women in Weimar Berlin and Republican Shanghai were both desired and feared for their role in the significant changes in these two metropoles. This article analyzes the emergence of the neue Frau and modeng xiaojie. The growth of the cities, industrialization and changes in the work force provided new opportunities for …

Mouse Models For Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum: Genetic And Dietary Modulation Of The Ectopic Mineralization Phenotypes., Qiaoli Li, Haitao Guo, David W Chou, Annerose Berndt, John P Sundberg, Jouni Uitto

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), a heritable ectopic mineralization disorder, is caused by mutations in the ABCC6 gene. Null mice (Abcc6(-/-) ) recapitulate the genetic, histopathologic and ultrastructural features of PXE, and they demonstrate early and progressive mineralization of vibrissae dermal sheath, which serves as a biomarker of the overall mineralization process. Recently, as part of a mouse aging study at The Jackson Laboratory, 31 inbred mouse strains were necropsied, and two of them, KK/HlJ and 129S1/SvImJ, were noted to have vibrissae dermal mineralization similar to Abcc6(-/-) mice. These two strains were shown to harbor a single nucleotide polymorphism (rs32756904) in the …

Disassembly Of The Cystovirus Φ6 Envelope By Montmorillonite Clay, Karin A. Block, Adrianna Trusiak, Al Katz, Paul Gottlieb, Alexandra Alimova, Hui Wei, Jorge Morales, William J. Rice, Jeffrey C. Steiner Feb 2014

Disassembly Of The Cystovirus Φ6 Envelope By Montmorillonite Clay, Karin A. Block, Adrianna Trusiak, Al Katz, Paul Gottlieb, Alexandra Alimova, Hui Wei, Jorge Morales, William J. Rice, Jeffrey C. Steiner

Publications and Research

Prior studies of clay–virus interactions have focused on the stability and infectivity of nonenveloped viruses, yielding contradictory results. We hypothesize that the surface charge distribution of the clay and virus envelope dictates how the components react and affect aggregation, viral stability, and infectivity. The bacteriophage Cystoviridae species φ6 used in this study is a good model for enveloped pathogens. The interaction between φ6 and montmorillonite (MMT) clay (the primary component of bentonite) is explored by transmission electron microscopy. The analyses show that MMT–φ6 mixtures undergo heteroaggregation, forming structures in which virtually all the virions are either sequestered between MMT platelet …

Using Mechanical Resonance To Overcome Van Der Waals Forces In Optical Trapping Experiments, Nathan B. Terry, Dr. Justin B. Peatross Feb 2014

Using Mechanical Resonance To Overcome Van Der Waals Forces In Optical Trapping Experiments, Nathan B. Terry, Dr. Justin B. Peatross

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The laser trapping of microscopic particles has many applications, especially in chemistry, biology and physics (1). It is of special interest to utilize optical trapping to levitate small objects for interferometry work. The levitation of a glass microsphere requires first that the Van der Waals forces between the sphere and the surface on which it rests (the contact surface) must be overcome. The first stage of this experiment examines overcoming these Van der Waal forces by mechanically vibrating the contact surface.

The Flea Family Tree: Phylogeny Of The Order Siphonaptera Based On 18s Rdna, 28s Rdna, Elongation Factor-1alpha, And Cytochrome Oxidase Ii Gene Regions, Alison Swindle, Dr. Michael F. Whiting

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Fleas are laterally compressed, wingless insects with small helmet shaped heads, and mouthparts specialized for feeding on the blood of their hosts. These morphological specializations make it possible for fleas to be entirely ectoparasitic, but they also make it difficult to find distinguishing characters on which to base taxonomy above the generic level (Holland, 1964). The highly derived state of flea morphology has resulted in questionable classification within the order, and lack of solid support for any group as the sister taxon to fleas. To this point there has been no molecular study that has considered fleas below the ordinal …
