Society And Style: Prints From The Sheldon Museum Of Art, Alison G. Stewart, Paul Royster
Zea E-Books Collection
This collection of works explores how Societies and Styles changed over the course of Early Modern Europe (1500-1800) from the time of the advent of printing on paper to the Industrial Revolution and beyond through little-seen printed masterpieces from the Sheldon Museum of Art’s collection. Today, “print” continues to endure even as new forms of digital publications transform our world in previously unimaginable ways, just as printing did centuries ago.
This exhibition offers a view into the ways printed works of art on paper (mostly woodcuts, engravings, and etchings) showcase society and its various aspects, ranging from one Christian martyrdom …

A Review Of Business Communication Under The Leadership Function, Clive Muir
A Review Of Business Communication Under The Leadership Function, Clive Muir
Faculty Publications
An effective way to perpetuate an academic discipline is to identify and to define its intellectual and historical roots, then to set such roots in the foundation textbooks and courses of the discipline. In that regard, Business Communication still struggles to establish its roots when compared to other disciplines in business schools, particularly Management. For this study, we undertook an extensive review of significant scholarly works on Business Communication as a discipline. We discovered there are prevalent themes in the broader context of rhetoric, technology, culture, dissemination, and impression; and this was confirmed by our examining the tables of contents …

RISD XYZ Fall/Winter 2014/2015: The Body
"LOVE THEM, HATE THEM, feed and obsess about them as we do, our bodies are our interface with each other and the physical world. They’re the often astonishing and perpetually intriguing vessels that hold who we are. When you think about the body in the context of art, it’s almost impossible to separate one from the other— just as it’s impossible to separate the body from considerations of health and health care. They’re all inextricably intertwined. . .". From the editor's message by Liisa Silander

The Ubiquitous Sport-Mediated Space: Sport-Mediated Screens, Doubled Illusions, And Live Spectacles In Stadia, Sangwoo In, Choong Hoon Lim, Paul M. Pedersen
Global Sport Business Journal
Stadium screens around the globe – such as the 2013 arrivals of the massive scoreboards at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia or the JumboTron at Reliant Stadium in the United States – are increasingly an integral part of the sport event experience. This study, which postulates that stadium screens go beyond television, defines the huge screens as sport-mediated screens and explains their characteristics from theoretical, spatial, time, and functional perspectives. The stadium, as the mixed reality in which real space and mediated space coexist, is a new arena for cultural interface. As a representative media platform in the stadium, …

Connecting Visual Communicators With An Auditory World: Exploring Communication Accomodation Processes In D/Deaf-Hearing Interactions, Genelle Timperlake Sanders, Stephanie Rollie Rodriguez
Iowa Journal of Communication
d/Deaf individuals' use of a visual-based language, American Sign Language (ASL), can lead to challenges in communicating and developing relationships with the larger hearing majority. This study uses Communication Accommodation Theory as a framework for exploring d/Deaf individuals' perspectives on communication with hearing individuals and the strategies they use to converge or diverge from hearing individuals during interactions. Through in-depth interviews conducted in ASL, participants were asked to recount experiences of communication interactions with members of the hearing majority and preferred strategies and motivations for convergence or divergence. Results identified convergence as a strategy to indicate interest in communicating with …

Predation-Associated Modulation Of Movement-Based Signals By A Bahamian Lizard, David S. Steinberg, Jonathan B. Losos, Thomas W. Schoener, David A. Spiller, Jason J. Kolbe, Manuel Leal
Predation-Associated Modulation Of Movement-Based Signals By A Bahamian Lizard, David S. Steinberg, Jonathan B. Losos, Thomas W. Schoener, David A. Spiller, Jason J. Kolbe, Manuel Leal
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Signaling individuals must effectively capture and hold the attention of intended conspecific receivers while limiting eavesdropping by potential predators. A possible mechanism for achieving this balance is for individuals to modulate the physical properties of their signals or to alter the proportion of time spent signaling, depending upon local levels of predation pressure. We test the hypothesis that prey can alter their visual signaling behavior to decrease conspicuousness and potentially limit predation risk via modulation of signal properties or display rate. To do so, we conducted a manipulative experiment in nature to evaluate the possible effect of predation pressure on …

Experiments On Surfactants And Thin Fluid Films, Peter Megson
Experiments On Surfactants And Thin Fluid Films, Peter Megson
HMC Senior Theses
We investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of a surfactant monolayer on a thin fluid film spreading inward into a region devoid of surfactant, a system motivated by the alveolus of the human lung. We perform experiments that simultaneously measure the fluid height profile and the fluorescence intensity due to our fluorescent surfactant, NBD-PC. We perform experiments on both a Newtonian layer of glycerol and a shear-thinning fluid layer consisting of xanthan gum mixed with glycerol. We can very successfully extract height profiles on the xanthan gum fluid, although the simultaneous measurement of fluorescent intensity profiles proved problematic, as the laser tended …

Exploring Hegemonic Perspectives Of Midwestern Yard-Spaces Through Art Education, Nan Waterstreet
Exploring Hegemonic Perspectives Of Midwestern Yard-Spaces Through Art Education, Nan Waterstreet
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated yard-spaces as artistic sites that are created and maintained through design processes involving aesthetic choices. The field of art education has grown to consider everyday objects and places worthy of exploration as important signifiers of cultural views, values, and expectations. Yard-spaces, as everyday places, are often taken for granted, and aesthetic choices that conform to social norms often have detrimental effects on the environment. This study investigated conformist and non-conformist aesthetic choices, the environmental effects of these choices, and the influences affecting design and maintenance choices for yard-space appearances.||A gap in knowledge was discovered for recognizing socially …

The study uses Basadur's Creative Problem Solving Inventory to classify students into one of four basic CPS styles. Individual CPS styles will be correlated with student career choices to test several hypothesized relationships. Subjects used in the study include BGSU undergraduate students majoring in Visual Communication Technology, Architecture and Environmental Design, Construction Management and Aviation Studies.
Malaria: The Story Of Struggle, Suffering, And Eradication, Stevey Willey
Malaria: The Story Of Struggle, Suffering, And Eradication, Stevey Willey
Honors Projects
Every year over two million men, women, and children around the world are affected by malaria, a disease that can easily be prevented with awareness, education, and support. In April 2014 I held a malaria event in which guests had the opportunity to witness the effects malaria has on people, not just physically, but emotionally and economically as well. The death rate has moved from one person every 30 seconds to one every 60 seconds since 2010. The improvement in the rate of deaths has resulted from the increase in awareness of this disease. It is my goal with this …

Political Communication, Paul A. Soukup
Communication
This review seeks to introduce political communication by showing the kinds of studies currently published. Of necessity not complete, it does not list every study nor does it include every possible approach to political communication, but only those published in the sample of journals—one hopes enough to indicate the scope of this wide area of communication study

Studies Of The Middle Class, Scott S. Stanard
Studies Of The Middle Class, Scott S. Stanard
Theses and Dissertations
I create oil paintings and drypoints that bring attention to scenes of American middle class life. I present crowds of people engaged in community activities and festivals. This enables me to depict a cross section of the residents of a given region. I also create a counterpoint to these peopled gatherings by painting and drawing the exteriors of middle class homes. In my work, I attempt to imbue a sense of intrigue and pathos.
I work from candid photos that I take of people and their living spaces. In these photos, I modify and delete elements to optimize narrative and …
