Re/Presentation Of Hip-Hop: An Exploration Of White Hip-Hop Fans, Consumers And Practitioners, Dale Compton Anderson

Wayne State University Dissertations

Whites make up the majority of hip-hop consumers and participants. However, scholars have created a clear link between hip-hop, the African American community, and African Diaspora. Through ethnographic fieldwork and autoethnography, I explore the intersection of race and hip-hop. With the data from my trips to hip-hop events and in-depth interviews: I answered 5 research question.

(RQ1) How does tension between subculturalists and post-subculturalists influence the understanding of how the hip-hop community is shaped by hip-hop music and art?

(RQ2) In what ways do white hip-hoppers conceptualize authenticity in hip-hop?

(RQ3) In what ways do whites re/present an authentic hip-hop …

Re-Imagining Invention (Post)Pedagogy From Ulmer's Electracy To Design, Ruth Elaine Clayman Jan 2014

Re-Imagining Invention (Post)Pedagogy From Ulmer's Electracy To Design, Ruth Elaine Clayman

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation is a historical project that traces the development of notable strands of composition pedagogy first crafted by Gregory Ulmer in his 1984 Applied Grammatology that continue to the present day, and groups them together in how they are incorporating multimodal tools in writing instruction that demand innovation in composition instruction. This will demonstrate how the work of certain contemporary composition scholars can be seen as creatively re-working the invention model that was devised and promoted by Ulmer in 1984. Through this history of invention in composition, Ulmer's invention model of writing instruction is clearly seen as both situated …

Mr Hyde Or Dr. Jekyll? Characteristics Of The Information Systems Security Mindset, David Pumphrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Information security professionals have a unique challenge in today's connected world. They are charged with protecting digital assets from individuals, groups, and even foreign governments with little or no restrictions limiting their behavior. To be successful, security experts must have the mindset and skills of those who seek to harm their organization, but most are not alloto retaliate, in kind. Instead, they must use these skills only to predict and to prevent future attacks; thus using their technical prowess for good and not for evil. In a survey of 330 information security professionals, the data reveals six mindsets of security …

Improbable Dreams: A Qualitative Case Study Of Elite High School Football Players, Noah Stephen Webb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a qualitative case study of an elite high school football program in the American Southeast. I conducted twelve interviews with former players from Lake Kolofa High School to better understand how young men are socialized into pursuing elite levels of sport. Using the society spectacle framework, this thesis extends current debates about primary sources of encouragement for participation to include the collective spectacle of sport. Here, the sporting spectacle acts as a major contributing factor in how young men come to view their chances of achieving upward social mobility through football. Other primary findings focus on the …

'Wait, Wait, Dan, Your Turn': Assessment In The Design Review, Arlene Oak, Peter Lloyd Jan 2014

'Wait, Wait, Dan, Your Turn': Assessment In The Design Review, Arlene Oak, Peter Lloyd

Design Thinking Research Symposium

This paper explores assessment in graduate-level industrial design education. In particular, it considers how the assessment of students' design work is delivered and who delivers it. Through using aspects of conversation analysis to look in close-up detail at a number of short segments of tutor-student interaction, we consider how a tutor performs assessment himself and also coaches other students to assess, in ways that may significantly contribute to students' understanding of what assessment is and how it is to occur. Creating opportunities for students and instructors to reflect upon evaluation, and how it is performed, may better equip participants in …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A gram-negative bacterium, Edwardsiella ictaluri, is the cause of enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), which is one of the most prevalent bacterial diseases in farm-raised catfish. The objective of this study was to identify risk factors associated with ESC mortalities and are reported by farm personnel. To identify risk factors a catfish management database was developed. The odds ratios (OR) of the final multivariable logistic regression model were: (1) volume of the pond (OR, 0.56), (2) interval from harvest until a mortality event (OR, 1.49), (3) interval from stocking until a mortality event (OR, 0.52), (4) nitrite measured within 14 …

Helping Students Succeed In College: The Role Of A First-Year Seminar, Kurt Laudicina

Theses and Dissertations

Student retention has been a mystery within colleges and universities for decades. Administrators continue to devote resources to increase student persistence within their institutions. The first-year seminar is a popular intervention found at many colleges and universities. The purpose of this study was to explain how a first-year seminar affected the retention rate of first-time, traditional aged freshman at a medium-sized, 4-year, public university. Using the fall cohort of 2012 students (N=665), this study used a two-phase, sequential, explanatory mixed methods design. Using a stratified random sample and Tinto's (1987) theory of individual departure as the theoretical framework, this study …

Exploring Leadership Styles From A Mediator's Perspective: A Phenomenological Study Examining Four Specific Organizational Leadership Styles And Their Relationship To Four Mediation Styles As Summarized By Leonard L. Riskin, Thomas J. Gajewski

Theses and Dissertations

If a successful organization is one where internal strife is minimized, then it stands to reason that a successful leader is an individual who knows how to handle conflict. Handling conflict, though, should not be approached intuitively, as the field of mediation has developed numerous techniques to understand and address conflict. To date, though, these techniques have not been categorized by leadership styles. The purpose of this study was to develop such a framework to understand how conflict resolution relates to the disciplines of mediation, organizational behavior, and organizational leadership. To further this endeavor, four themes were developed. These themes …

The Evolution And Impact Of The Massive Open Online Course, Rolin Moe Jan 2014

The Evolution And Impact Of The Massive Open Online Course, Rolin Moe

Theses and Dissertations

An online learning phenomenon emanated 2 ½ years ago from three courses taught at Stanford University, promising an opportunity for high-quality instruction from elite institutions and professors for no cost to the student. This phenomenon, which came to be known as the MOOC, catalyzed sweeping changes in both higher education's relationship with distance education, as well as the discussion of higher education in society, in a remarkably short period of time. While people have questioned the effectiveness of MOOC learning and the potential negative consequences of adopting MOOC systems either in support of or to replace existing educational infrastructure, the …

Several barriers to collaboration were identified, such as divergence in the field and "turf" issues. Several success factors for collaboration also were identified, such as having a …

Changing The World Through Servant Leadership, Michele Anne Spain Jan 2014

Changing The World Through Servant Leadership, Michele Anne Spain

Theses and Dissertations

Leadership theories provide guidance, methods, and models for effective leaders. Many leadership theories, such as transactional, transformational, and servant leadership, identify a set of leadership traits or behaviors an effective leader possesses. Robert Greenleaf's (1970) servant leadership theory and characteristics have endured for decades. Greenleaf's servant leadership theory has resurfaced and grown in popularity as evidence by his work being widely cited in new publications, leadership journals, and articles on servant leadership (e.g., Ken Blanchard, Stephen Covey, and Peter Senge). A number of authors have studied Eunice Kennedy Shriver and written about her leadership style, but no one to date …

The Need For Greater Integration In Philanthropy In Multiparty Social Change Efforts: A Case Study Of Portland's Collective Impact Initiative, Helen Marie Scalise Jan 2014

The Need For Greater Integration In Philanthropy In Multiparty Social Change Efforts: A Case Study Of Portland's Collective Impact Initiative, Helen Marie Scalise

Theses and Dissertations

Many social change groups employ formalized multiparty collaborative efforts to create sustainable social change around today's complex public issues. This study investigates the role and perspective of foundations in these interorganizational collaboratives, specifically collective impact initiatives. It highlights a disconnect between the traditional culture of philanthropy that provides only short-term funding and the long-term nature of systems change. This paradox hinders the impact that foundations and nonprofits alike can make toward addressing complex issues. The study recommends that nonprofits and foundations take active roles in changing the narrative of separatism between philanthropy and nonprofits and begin seeing themselves as part …

An Examination Of Corporate Capabilities To Recognize Pathic Subtleties In Leadership Candidates During The Pre-Employment Screening Process, Robert Allen Jan 2014

An Examination Of Corporate Capabilities To Recognize Pathic Subtleties In Leadership Candidates During The Pre-Employment Screening Process, Robert Allen

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines a large corporation's capability to recognize pathic subtleties (i.e., abeyant personality traits) in leadership candidates through the application of conventional pre-employment screening methods. This study's protologism for executive applicants harboring near-pathic or sub-clinical behavioral tendencies is the Pseudopath. The ill-fated significance of pathics (i.e., narcipaths, sociopaths, and psychopaths) to corporate America is well-documented and studied. The characterization and significance of the pseudopath to corporate America is nascent, and as such, is largely undocumented and minimally studied. Recent literature suggests a high incidence of pseudopaths in corporate America's executive job-seeking marketplace. Related research and real-world observations further suggest …

These changes influence people's perspective in seeing things, including their self-identity. The aim of this research was to explore the evolvement of expatriates' self-identity. A qualitative research design using reflexive narrative inquiry was employed. Seven current and former expatriates from Australia, Japan, Netherlands, United …

Theses and Dissertations

Much attention has been paid to the current state of graduate business education, specifically the MBA degree, and the seeming disconnect between industry needs and what business schools are preparing MBA graduates for. A comprehensive study on the state of MBA education was completed in 2010 by Datar, Garvin, and Cullen (2010), the goal of which was to document the forces reshaping business education and the institutional responses to them, as well as provide suggestions on a path forward for MBA education. This research picked up where Datar et al. (2010) left off: the purpose of this study was to …
