The Influence Of Family Communication, Television Viewing And Peer Communication On The Orientation Of Materialism Among Young Adult Consumers / Eric Vincent Bindah, Vincent Bindah Eric
The Influence Of Family Communication, Television Viewing And Peer Communication On The Orientation Of Materialism Among Young Adult Consumers / Eric Vincent Bindah, Vincent Bindah Eric
Student Works (2010-2019)
Materialism among today’s youth has received strong interest among educators, parents, consumer activist and government regulators. Although materialism has long been of interest to consumer researchers, it is not clear whether specific socialization agents in general, and communication environment in particular, can instil materialism in people. The overall objectives of this study are to analyze the effect of family communication, television viewing, and peer communication on young adults’ orientation towards materialism. The theoretical foundation of this study lies on several established theories, which include consumer socialization theory, social comparison theory, social learning theory, cultivation theory, self-determination theory, Maslow’s human need …
Essays On The Co-Operatives’ Performances In Malaysia / Azmah Binti Othman, Azmah Othman
Essays On The Co-Operatives’ Performances In Malaysia / Azmah Binti Othman, Azmah Othman
Student Works (2010-2019)
Renowned for the potential in alleviating poverty, co-operative movement has been encouraged and supported by the government. This research investigates co-operative performances and efficiency in Malaysia using quantitative and qualitative methods. The first essay revealed that co-operatives’ role in economic development is still relevant. Credit and banking co-operatives had contributed to the movement’s growth and development. The National Co-operative Plans are important blueprint for co-operative development in the country. Investigation on factors influencing co-operative membership in the second essay revealed that membership is favourable to the older age groups as compared to younger age groups. Those working in government sector …
Social Media Usage For Civic Engagement / Anne Marie Warren, Anne Marie Warren
Social Media Usage For Civic Engagement / Anne Marie Warren, Anne Marie Warren
Student Works (2010-2019)
In the field of Information Systems, much is known about social media as an Information Technology artefact and its influence, offering various understandings of online human behaviour, particularly for business, psychology and sociology implications. Frequently, research on social media usage can be classified into internal (e.g. entertainment and satisfaction) and external factors (e.g. connection benefits). While these studies on motivations generated a clear link between internal and external factors for social media usage, they did not relate clearly the motivations to the contributions made in terms of civic engagement behaviour. Although there have been calls for research in understanding social …

Role Of Effective Communication To Ensure Community Participation In Ngos' Projects: A Comparative Study Of A Malaysian And A Pakistani Ngo / Mumtaz Ali, Mumtaz Ali
Student Works (2010-2019)
In today‟s world social issues can be seen in the form of conflict, discrimination, poverty, low quality human resources and unequal distribution of resources, thereby leaving communities marginalized and deprived. Community development is one way of building the capacity of people and involving them in finding the solutions to such problems. Community development also has much potential to build community cohesion by facilitating and supporting a community‟s commitment and strengthening connections among individuals, organizations and local groups. Community participation in development projects is important and vital for the success of any initiative. To have a successful outcome, effective participation is …
Non Invasive Investigation Of Sensorimotor Control For Future Development Of Brain-Machine-Interface (Bmi), Leo Tomasevic
Non Invasive Investigation Of Sensorimotor Control For Future Development Of Brain-Machine-Interface (Bmi), Leo Tomasevic
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
My thesis focuses on describing novel functional connectivity properties of the sensorimotor system that are of potential interest in the field of brain-machine interface. In particular, I have investigated how the connectivity changes as a consequence of either pathologic conditions or spontaneous fluctuations of the brain's internal state. An ad-hoc electronic device has been developed to implement the appropriate experimental settings. First, the functional communication among sensorimotor primary nodes was investigated in multiple sclerosis patients afflicted by persistent fatigue. I selected this condition, for which there is no effective pharmacological treatment, since existing literature links this type of fatigue to …

Introduction: This study examines the concentration of wealth in New York City between 1990 and 2010 using data on household income from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.
Results: The data indicate an extraordinary, and growing, concentration of wealth in the City at large and among each major race/ethnic group, as well as among the five largest Latino national …
"Heavenly Theologians": The Place Of Angels In The Theology Of Martin Luther, Christopher J. Samuel
"Heavenly Theologians": The Place Of Angels In The Theology Of Martin Luther, Christopher J. Samuel
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation examines a virtually untouched aspect of Martin Luther's theology: his angelology. Specifically, it argues four main points: that Luther does, over his corpus, present an angelology; that his angelology is indebted to and in conversation with the prior theological tradition; that his concern with the angels is evident throughout his career; and that his major angelological concerns are pastoral in nature. Furthermore, it presents Luther's answers to four basic angelological questions: 1) what are the angels?; 2) what is the angels' role in Creation?; 3) what is the nature of their relationship with humanity?; and 4) what is …
Filling The Gap: Nonviolent Strategies For Civilian Self-Protection During Mass Atrocities, Danny Hirschel-Burns , '14
Filling The Gap: Nonviolent Strategies For Civilian Self-Protection During Mass Atrocities, Danny Hirschel-Burns , '14
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This thesis seeks to highlight and understand the phenomenon of civilian self-protection during mass atrocities. I begin by demonstrating the structural barriers to international atrocity prevention and mitigation, and why civilian self-protection is therefore necessary. Next, to contexualize civilian self-protection, I look at why mass atrocities happen and how they work, arguing they are elite-led processes, but occur in a complex conflict system. The core of the thesis looks at empirical examples of civilian self-protection, theorizes their dynamics, and proposes avenues for their improvement. Finally, I use civilian self-protection to bridge divides between various theories and disciplines. This thesis is …
Sustainability Policy’S Inherent Dilemmas – Exemplified Via Critical Examination Of The Las Vegas Metropolitan Sustainability Campaign, Kathryn A. Zimmerman
Sustainability Policy’S Inherent Dilemmas – Exemplified Via Critical Examination Of The Las Vegas Metropolitan Sustainability Campaign, Kathryn A. Zimmerman
All Master's Theses
In response to a dual problem of critical water scarcity and rapid population growth, leaders of metropolitan Las Vegas implemented a region-wide, internationally marketed sustainability campaign. Preliminary studies found that, while sustainability policy attains its rhetorical goals, solutions initiated not only perpetuate but also purposefully expand the original dual problem to justify continuous water resource acquisitions. To examine this sustainability conundrum constructed by leadership—problem-perpetuation rather than problem-resolution—a critical examination in resource management asked two basic questions: what is being sustained and by what means? Via this inquiry, specific processes by which leaders perpetuate problems can be identified; and, so-informed, new …
Eating Baby Food Or Eating Meat? Student Voices On The “Everyday” Use Of Powerpoint In University Teaching, Christina Belcher, Kimberly Maich
Eating Baby Food Or Eating Meat? Student Voices On The “Everyday” Use Of Powerpoint In University Teaching, Christina Belcher, Kimberly Maich
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
This research study centres on the use of PowerPoint in university classes. It poses the question: How do students perceive PowerPoint specifically and technology overall impacting their university experiences as a process for learning, as an element of social community building and as a worldview lens for examining and critiquing their world? In a qualitative ethnographic narrative, based on the work of Dorothy Smith, student voices in the everyday are heard in order to provide insider perceptions on the key question. Twenty-four volunteer participants signed consent to engage in focus groups flowing from 3, twenty-one hour face-to-face courses. These courses …

The Postmodern Paradox: How The Christian Scholar Has Both Declined And Thrived As A Result Of Postmodernism’S Influence In Higher Education, Patrick Otto, Lani M. Malcolm
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
The Christian scholar faces an interesting paradox concerning postmodernism’s influence in higher education (Edlin, 2009). One of the key components of the modernism paradigm was the ability for humans to reason (Pells, 2007). Universities were based largely on a model in which young adults were expected to first acquire knowledge, principles, and skills, and then later apply that which was learned to their career ambitions, citizenship, or professional development (Willis, 1995). But in the 1960s and 1970s, higher education began to face increasing social pressure as the ideas of modernism associated with knowledge acquisition, power, and authority came under scrutiny …

Graduate Assistant Coaches' Transition To Becoming Effective Head Coaches: An Exploratory Study, Hillary Franks
All Master's Theses
The purpose of the study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the necessary experiences graduate assistant coaches must experience before becoming a head coach. Data were obtained through phone interviews with eight Division I Women's Soccer Coaches in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho State. Results indicated there are a number of different experiences and situations that must happen collectively in order to have a positive transition from an assistant coach or graduate assistant coach to a head coach at the division I level. These results represent one of the first empirical accounts of the graduate assistant coaches' experiences in the …
Novel Interdisciplinary Approaches To Understanding Kidney Transplantation Outcomes, Neel Butala
Novel Interdisciplinary Approaches To Understanding Kidney Transplantation Outcomes, Neel Butala
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
This thesis details 2 studies using novel approaches to understand kidney transplant outcomes: instrumental variables and social network analysis. Together, these studies demonstrate the value of interdisciplinary approaches to advance the field of kidney transplantation.
While some studies have found an association between delayed graft function (DGF) after kidney transplantation and worse long-term outcomes, a causal relationship remains controversial. In our first study, we investigate this relationship using an instrumental variables model (IVM), a quasi-randomization technique for drawing causal inferences. We identified 73,714 adult, deceased-donor, kidney-only transplant recipients from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) between 1997 and 2010. …

The Breach Of The Common Law Trust Relationship Between The United States And African Americans – A Substantive Right To Reparations, Ayesha Bell Hardaway

Domination and elaborate control of Africans in colonial America, and later the United States, were exerted to provide the requisite framework for the economically profitable Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Proponents of slavery characterized the aims of slavery in pseudo-paternalistic terms to “train” and “civilize[e] the untutored savage.” Even after the formal end of slavery, the U.S. and local governments continued to exercise its domination and elaborate control by enforcing a national system of racial segregation and discrimination. That system of government-sanctioned laws was so pervasive and commonly accepted that it has been personified as “Jim Crow.” As a result, racial hierarchy …

Cultural Imaginary, The Rule Of Law, And (Post-) Colonialism In Indonesia: Perspectives From Pramoedya Ananta Toer's This Earth Of Mankind, Jeffrey E. Thomas
Faculty Works
This article focuses on culture and rule of law in Indonesia, which provides an excellent case study in colonialism and post-colonialism. The colonial heritage of Indonesia goes back to the early 1500’s until independence was declared in August 1945. This Earth of Mankind by Pramoedya Ananta Toer is an appropriate text because it concerns the struggle of a Native Indonesian with various colonial institutions at the turn of the 19th Century through the eyes of an author who lived through colonial rule, Japanese occupation, and liberation. This article begins with a framework for analysis of the cultural imaginary based on …

Appraisal Of Active Tectonics Using Dem-Based Hypsometric Integral And Trend Surface Analysis In Emilia-Romagna Apennines, Northern Italy, Saima Siddiqui, Mauro Soldati
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The hypsometric integral (HI) has generally been used to explain the stages of landscape evolution and erosional processes. It is an important tool to investigate tectonics and lithologic and climatic effects on topographic change. We analyzed the significance of the HI to investigate active tectonics in the Emilia-Romagna Apennines of northern Italy. We used a digital elevation model of 5-m spatial resolution to calculate grid-based HI values. The HI distribution does not show clear spatial patterns of high and low HI values. However, when statistical methods of local indices of spatial autocorrelation were applied, it was possible to identify clear …

Factors That Influence The Stigma Associated With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Anna M. Chester
All Master's Theses
The current study focused on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how factors such as gender or military status and precipitating trauma associated with the disorder influenced the occurrence or strength of the participants' perceived and personal stigma and desired social distance to the individual suffering from PTSD. Participants' PTSD knowledge was measured and evaluated as a potential covariate. Three hundred and thirty male and female undergraduate participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 12 experimental vignettes that varied by gender, military status, and precipitating trauma associated with an individual suffering from PTSD. Results supported one of the proposed hypotheses: knowledge …
A Survey Of Dramaturgical Practices In Contemporary American Theater: The Dramaturg In Process, Maggie Bell
A Survey Of Dramaturgical Practices In Contemporary American Theater: The Dramaturg In Process, Maggie Bell
All Master's Theses
A review of the literature on dramaturgical practices in the American theater from the past thirty years revealed a significant paucity of first-hand accounts by dramaturgs about their work and especially about the contributions dramaturgs make to the production process. In general, the literature addresses dramaturgical practices in abstract or theoretical terms, without documenting the specific contributions that dramaturgs make to the creation of productions and events as performances. This thesis documents and defines the dramaturgical process through interviews with a select sample of early career and established dramaturgs. The interviews conducted follow the narrative method of open-ended questions and …

Collected Papers of David Kennedy
This paper offers a genealogy of dialogic education, tracing its origins in Romantic epistemology and corresponding philosophy of childhood, and identifying it as a counterpoint to the purposes and assumptions of universal, compulsory, state-imposed and regulated schooling. Dialogic education has historically worked against the grain of standardized mass education, not only in its view of the nature, capacities and potentialities of children (and therefore of adults as well), but in its economic, political and social views, for which childhood is understood as a promissory condition. Dialogic education is oriented to what Dewey called “a future new society of changed purposes …
