Is The Relationship Between Adolescent Dating And Delinquency Spurious? The Role Of Self-Control In Explaining The Correlation Between Dating And Delinquency, Amber Elaine Swindell Jan 2014

Is The Relationship Between Adolescent Dating And Delinquency Spurious? The Role Of Self-Control In Explaining The Correlation Between Dating And Delinquency, Amber Elaine Swindell

Master's Theses and Capstones

Research suggests a relationship exists between dating and delinquency among adolescents. The goal of this thesis was to further consider the relationship between adolescent dating and delinquency, and test the possibility that self-control could serve as a confounding variable. Using OLS regression and two waves of New Hampshire Youth Study data, a longitudinal dataset composed of two cohorts of adolescents, I tested the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationship between adolescent dating and delinquency. Cross-sectionally, findings suggest dating and delinquency are significantly related, even upon adjusting for self-control and demographic controls. Longitudinally, levels of dating appear positively associated with changes in delinquency …

The Relationship Between Success Modeling And Fear Of Success In College Students, Elizabeth Coe, Steven V. Rouse, Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Success Modeling And Fear Of Success In College Students, Elizabeth Coe, Steven V. Rouse, Elizabeth J. Krumrei-Mancuso

All Faculty Open Access Publications

This study examined fear of success (FOS) in relation to biological sex and success modeling. Students (N = 108) from a small, liberal arts college completed self-report measures of FOS, success modeling, and demographic factors. It was hypothesized that: (a) no sex differences would be found for FOS and (b) success modeling would be negatively related to FOS. Results indicated female participants reported higher levels of FOS than male participants and success modeling by parents but not by peers was negatively related to FOS. Thus, despite recent societal evidence of equitable achievement, women may still experience higher levels of FOS …

Judge Posner, Judge Wilkinson, And Judicial Critique Of Constitutional Theory, Kevin C. Walsh Jan 2014

Judge Posner, Judge Wilkinson, And Judicial Critique Of Constitutional Theory, Kevin C. Walsh

Law Faculty Publications

Judge Richard Posner's well-known view is that constitutional theory is useless. And Judge J Harvie Wilkinson III has lambasted constitutional theory for the way in which its "cosmic" aspirations threaten democratic self-governance. Many other judges hold similar views. And yet both Posner and Wilkinson-in the popular press, in law review articles, and in books-have advocated what appear to be their own theories of how to judge in constitutional cases. Judicial pragmatism for Posner and judicial restraint for Wilkinson seem to be substitutes for originalism, living constitutionalism, political process theory, and so on. But both Posner and Wilkinson also deny that …

Confidential Ideas And Independent Contractors: Trade Secret Ownership In The Age Of The Hired Gun, Rob P. Saka Jan 2014

Confidential Ideas And Independent Contractors: Trade Secret Ownership In The Age Of The Hired Gun, Rob P. Saka

UC Law Business Journal

Does an independent contractor or a party hiring the contractor own the new, confidential ideas that fall outside of what the contract or is hired to provide, but that arise during the course of that work? The issue of tradesecret ownership is important due to the growing use of contractors, particularly in the tech development industry. This note explores the emerging issue of trade secret ownership in the post- Great Recession era of increased reliance on contractor-inventors. In concluding that-absenta contrary written agreement- contractor- inventors are the rightful owners of their incidentally created trade secrets while assigned to a project, …

Creating A Culture Of Compliance: Why Departmentalization May Not Be The Answer, Michele Destefano Jan 2014

Creating A Culture Of Compliance: Why Departmentalization May Not Be The Answer, Michele Destefano

UC Law Business Journal

Over the past few decades, as corporate criminal liability rules, sentencing guidelines, and settlement incentives have changed, there has been increased emphasis on and resources devoted to the compliance function at large publicly held companies. In this article, Professor DeStefano traces the development of the compliance function at large corporations and questions the recent mandate by certain governmental entities that malfeasant corporations designate a chief compliance officer and separate the compliance gatekeeping function from the legal department so that this chief compliance officer does not report to the general counsel. She categorizes the types of arguments made for and against …

Common Law Decision-Making, Constitutional Shadows, And The Value Of Consistency: The Jurisprudence Of William F. Batchelder, Lawrence Friedman Jan 2014

Common Law Decision-Making, Constitutional Shadows, And The Value Of Consistency: The Jurisprudence Of William F. Batchelder, Lawrence Friedman

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “This is an essay about common law decision-making, with an emphasis on the value of consistency as it relates to claims about the legitimacy of judicial lawmaking. The legitimacy of judicial lawmaking is ever an issue, particularly, of course, in the cases at the margins—those instances in which precedent points the court in no obviously correct direction, a choice must be made between plausible alternative paths, and “a decision one way or the other,” as Benjamin Cardozo observed, “will count for the future, will advance or retard, sometimes much, sometimes little, the development of the law.””

Local Critiques Of Global Development: Patriotism In Late Colonial Buganda, Carol Summers Jan 2014

Local Critiques Of Global Development: Patriotism In Late Colonial Buganda, Carol Summers

History Faculty Publications

Interviewed by an incredulous anthropologist in 1955, an elderly Paulo Lukongwa insisted that more than half a century of colonial development policies had brought almost nothing to his country. Writing was new and wonderful, he admitted, and he gave European colonizers credit for cars and bicycles that made travel faster. But otherwise, nothing was new. Martin Southwold, the young anthropologist, suggested that clocks were new, and Lukongwa pointed out that they’d had roosters to wake them up. Surely the gramophone was progress, Southwold asserted, and Lukongwa responded that when they had wanted music, they called people to play—and what was …

The Effects Of Coal Mining On Health In Appalachia : Global Context And Social Justice Implications, Adrienne Schmidt

Honors Theses

The purpose of this report is to investigate the environmental and health effects of coal mining in the Appalachian region of the United States in the context of global natural resource extraction, explore existing regulation for the reduction of negative environmental health effects of mining in Appalachia, and explore the social justice implications of current mining practices. The research for this report was limited to literature published in English. It was found that there are widespread negative health effects of mining in Appalachia due to environmental toxins, a toxic social environment of limited economic opportunity, and occupational health hazards. The …

The Effect Of Answering In A Preferred Versus A Non-Preferred Survey Mode On Measurement, Jolene Smyth, Kristen Olson, Alian S. Kasabian Jan 2014

The Effect Of Answering In A Preferred Versus A Non-Preferred Survey Mode On Measurement, Jolene Smyth, Kristen Olson, Alian S. Kasabian

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Previous research has shown that offering respondents their preferred mode can increase response rates, but the effect of doing so on how respondents process and answer survey questions (i.e., measurement) is unclear. In this paper, we evaluate whether changes in question format have different effects on data quality for those responding in their preferred mode than for those responding in a non-preferred mode for three question types (multiple answer, open-ended, and grid). Respondents were asked about their preferred mode in a 2008 survey and were recontacted in 2009. In the recontact survey, respondents were randomly assigned to one of two …

“Rebuilding Our Community”: Hearing Silenced Voices On Aboriginal Youth Suicide, Melissa L. Walls, Dane Hautala, Jenna Hurley Jan 2014

“Rebuilding Our Community”: Hearing Silenced Voices On Aboriginal Youth Suicide, Melissa L. Walls, Dane Hautala, Jenna Hurley

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper brings forth the voices of adult Aboriginal First Nations community members who gathered in focus groups to discuss the problem of youth suicide on their reserves. Our approach emphasizes multilevel (e.g., individual, family, and broader ecological systems) factors viewed by participants as relevant to youth suicide. Wheaton’s conceptualization of stressors (1994; 1999) and Evans-Campbell’s (2008) multilevel classification of the impacts of historical trauma are used as theoretical and analytic guides. Thematic analysis of qualitative data transcripts revealed a highly complex intersection of stressors, traumas, and social problems seen by community members as underlying mechanisms influencing heightened levels of …

Songs You Know By Heart: Alcohol, Promiscuous Sex, Drugs, And Escape In Jimmy Buffett’S Music, Eve M. Brank, Kathleen A. Fox, Victoria Kaspar Jan 2014

Songs You Know By Heart: Alcohol, Promiscuous Sex, Drugs, And Escape In Jimmy Buffett’S Music, Eve M. Brank, Kathleen A. Fox, Victoria Kaspar

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Some researchers argue singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett’s lyrics focus on alcohol, promiscuous sex, and drugs, while others say Buffett’s music has changed since he sold out to corporate sponsorship. Results from a systematic coding of all 386 of his songs released since 1969 indicate Buffett’s music is more about escape and irony than deviant behaviors. Furthermore, lyric themes remain largely unaltered even through an increase in his popularity and corporate sponsorship.

Multiple Motherhoods: The Effect Of The Internalization Of Motherhood Ideals On Life Satisfaction, Kayla M. Pritchard, Lisa Kort-Butler Jan 2014

Multiple Motherhoods: The Effect Of The Internalization Of Motherhood Ideals On Life Satisfaction, Kayla M. Pritchard, Lisa Kort-Butler

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Purpose – This study examined whether life satisfaction varied among women who occupy different motherhood statuses, and if these variations were influenced by differences in women’s internalization of cultural motherhood norms. We distinguished among women as biological mothers, stepmothers, and “double mothers,” who were both biological and stepmothers. We also included two groups of women without children: voluntary childfree and involuntary childless women.

Design/methodology/approach – Data were drawn from the National Study of Fertility Barriers and analyzed using OLS regression.

Findings – Biological mothers reported greater life satisfaction than women in other motherhood statuses. Accounting for the internalization of motherhood …

The Use Of Photography As A Clinical Tool In Social Work : A Theoretical Exploration Using Winnicottian And Jungian Lenses, André N. Zandoná Jan 2014

The Use Of Photography As A Clinical Tool In Social Work : A Theoretical Exploration Using Winnicottian And Jungian Lenses, André N. Zandoná

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

In this theoretical study, the photographic process was examined as having the potential to be used as a psychodynamic clinical tool in social work. Psychodynamic theoretical concepts by Carl Jung and Donald W. Winnicott were examined as guiding principles that will allow clinicians to understand how photography can be useful as a means to understand one's internal experience as well as external relationship with the world. This body of work presented current and potential uses of the camera as an instrument in interpreting the world according to one's subjectivity. In addition to theoretical examination, this research study also presented real …

Trans* And Gender Non-Conforming (Tgnc) Young Adults : Self-Report Of Access And Comfort In Health Care Systems, Victoria L. Reiszner Jan 2014

Trans* And Gender Non-Conforming (Tgnc) Young Adults : Self-Report Of Access And Comfort In Health Care Systems, Victoria L. Reiszner

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study examined diverse trans* and gender non-conforming (TGNC) young adults' perceptions of medical and mental health providers and health care settings; and how TGNC perceptions influence or inhibit their level of comfort and willingness to access preventative and emergency services. The study aimed to extend knowledge and understanding of challenges faced by TGNC individuals and to inform health care providers on how they can become more effective in both their outreach and service provision to TGNC communities. Much of the current literature examining individuals with gender nonconforming identities focus on discrimination, limited access to health care, major health challenges, …

Interpreting Secretary Perkins, Barry Cushman Jan 2014

Interpreting Secretary Perkins, Barry Cushman

Journal Articles

This essay is my contribution to an exchange with Professor Daniel R. Ernst of Georgetown University Law Center concerning the timing of a visit by Chief Justice Hughes and his wife to the Pennsylvania summer home of Justice Owen Roberts. In the 1950s, former Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins recounted in the oral history interview she gave to Columbia University that Mrs. Roberts had reported to her that Hughes and Roberts had held extended, private conversations during that visit. It has been argued by some scholars that the visit took place during the summer of 1936, shortly after the Court …

The Origins Of An Everyday Behavior: Why Do People Share Meals?, David Lee Jan 2014

The Origins Of An Everyday Behavior: Why Do People Share Meals?, David Lee

Honors Theses

Humans are socially driven creatures that require constant interaction. One way humans have consistently expressed their social nature since prehistory is through sharing meals. Recent studies and literature were examined in order to investigate the roots behind why sharing meals has been the most consistent method of social output. Through careful reading and analysis, reasons behind why people share meals were traced in perspective levels. The biological and molecular aspect explains how humans evolved from prehistoric primates and their similarities associated with food consumption. Genetics and food preferences also play a role by allowing humans to taste food rather than …

The Evolution Of A Social Movement: A Study Of The Madres De Plaza De Mayo, Grace Anne Boyd Jan 2014

The Evolution Of A Social Movement: A Study Of The Madres De Plaza De Mayo, Grace Anne Boyd

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the evolution of the Madres de Plaza de Mayo social movement in Argentina from 1979-2014. The Madres de Plaza de Mayo are a social movement that initiated protests against the military junta that controlled Argentina from 1976-1982. The Madres were the mothers of people the junta had disappeared during its regime, and the protests were a demand for information about the missing children. After the fall of the dictatorship, the movement continued its protest for information. During this time, the movement underwent a structural split that coincided with ideological structure. I analyzed both internal and external factors …

How To Win Elections And Influence Parties: Party And Electoral System Development And Manipulation In The Republic Of China, James B. Cutchin Jan 2014

How To Win Elections And Influence Parties: Party And Electoral System Development And Manipulation In The Republic Of China, James B. Cutchin

Honors Theses

This work asserts that the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) has been able to retain power in Taiwan's apparently competitive democratic system through manipulation of the political party and electoral systems. These systems have a close relationship in which the electoral system is a result of the party system. During Taiwan's transition to democracy the KMT was able to use their one party dominant position to establish an electoral system which favored them in elections. This electoral system in turn shaped the emerging political party system to the benefit of the KMT. Over time, as political conditions in Taiwan shifted, the …

The Specter Of Franco, Alexandra L. Jones Jan 2014

The Specter Of Franco, Alexandra L. Jones

Honors Theses

Human rights violations that occurred almost seventy years ago are still a social issue in Spain today. This project analyzed five post- Franco films that dealt with the issue of the Spanish Civil War or Franco regime to determine if they were a counter to official political discourse on the subject. In addition to analyzing the films themselves, research was also done on a variety of official discourse pertaining to the recovery of memory in Spain. Upon examination it became clear that the overarching discourse in Spain is a refusal to address the issues of the past. Films which resurrected …

Ja, Ich Will: Framing The Same-Sex Marriage Debate In The 17th Session Of The German Bundestag, Stephen Colby Woods Jan 2014

Ja, Ich Will: Framing The Same-Sex Marriage Debate In The 17th Session Of The German Bundestag, Stephen Colby Woods

Honors Theses

In 2001, Germany passed the Life Partnership Act (Gesetz über die Eingetragene Lebenspartnerschaft), establishing civil partnerships for same-sex couples. At the time, Germany was a forerunner in the legal recognition of same-sex relationships. Despite the approval of 74% of Germans, same-sex marriage was a fiercely debated topic from 2009 to 2013 in the 17th session of the Bundestag. During this session, the Christian Democratic Union, Christian Social Union, and Free Democratic Party make up the Majority government, and the Social Democratic Party, Alliance 90/the Greens, and the Left made up the Opposition. This thesis uses framing theory to examine what …

A Strategy To Present The Concept Of Headship: Healing Families In The North Burundi Mission, Ndikubwayo Joseph Jan 2014

A Strategy To Present The Concept Of Headship: Healing Families In The North Burundi Mission, Ndikubwayo Joseph

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. The headship of a husband over a wife is one of the concepts that creates a lot of misunderstanding in some Seventh-day Adventist homes in the North Burundi Mission. This situation has impacted both families and the church. On one hand, a husband believes he is to be strong, that he is the only one who can think logically, and that he should make all the decisions for the household. On other hand, a woman is considered to be weak, and therefore must respect her husband, have babies, and keep quiet. Unfortunately many women show respect out of fear …

Health And Social Ministries: A Holistic Approach To Ministering In Contemporary Society, Ezekiel Adeyemi Oyinloye Jan 2014

Health And Social Ministries: A Holistic Approach To Ministering In Contemporary Society, Ezekiel Adeyemi Oyinloye

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

It has been observed for thirty years that Adventists conventional way of doing outreach ministries especially in the cities, fail to have expected response that fulfills goals. Attitudes of people are apathetic and reserved they stand aloof and are removed from sharing in what has been offered. They cannot be bothered. The inner city of Ibadan especially displays this type of attitude. Thus, inner city Ibadan has remained unentered by the Adventists since the inception of the Church in Ibadan a century ago. There is no single church of the Seventh-day Adventists in inner city Ibadan.

Method

A strategy …

Promoting Cross-Cultural Engagement Among The Pastors In The Greater New York Conference, Oriel Thomas Jan 2014

Promoting Cross-Cultural Engagement Among The Pastors In The Greater New York Conference, Oriel Thomas

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Cultural diversity in the Greater New York Conference has created frequent conflicts among pastors and workers. Examples of the types of circumstances engendering conflict may be seen in the following: (a) Lack of cross-cultural evangelism. An outstanding evangelist of one ethnic group does not have the opportunity to do evangelism with another ethnic group. (b) Lack of adequate representation for all ethnic groups. In choosing speakers for camp meeting, seminar presenters for workers’ meetings, or job placements, there is sometimes inadequate representation of all the ethnic groups which may cause disharmony and disunity among the workers and members. (c) …
