A Study In Seven: Hebrew Numerology In The Book Of Mormon, Corbin Volluz Jun 2014

A Study In Seven: Hebrew Numerology In The Book Of Mormon, Corbin Volluz

BYU Studies

The subject of Hebrew numerology in the Book of Mormon has been identified as a promising field of study still open to fruitful exploration. Meaning is found in many ways, and one way is in the symbolism of numbers. Previous studies have discussed significant uses of the numbers ten, twenty-four, and fifty in the Book of Mormon, beginning with explanations of the symbolic importance of such numbers in ancient literatures, and then pointing out similar usages in the Nephite record. This article adds to those discussions by drawing attention to the number seven and things that occur seven times in …

Exploring Mormon Thought: Of God And Gods, James M. Mclauchlan, Blake T. Ostler Jun 2014

Exploring Mormon Thought: Of God And Gods, James M. Mclauchlan, Blake T. Ostler

BYU Studies

Blake T. Ostler's monumental systematic work, Exploring Mormon Thought, continues to be a major event in the development of Mormon philosophical theology. Over the last fifteen years, work on Mormonism in the general field of religious studies has exploded. There are far too many works to give even a partial list here, but I will highlight a few of the notable authors. Terryl L. Givens publishes thoughtful and nuanced work in such books as When Souls Had Wings: Pre-Mortal Existence in Western Thought; Stephen H. Webb memorably discusses Mormon "materialism" from the perspective of a philosophical theologian outside Mormonism in …

Exploring The First Vision, Alonzo Dodge, James T. Summerhays, Steven C. Harper Jun 2014

Exploring The First Vision, Alonzo Dodge, James T. Summerhays, Steven C. Harper

BYU Studies

This book sets out to do exactly what the title says it does--explore the First Vision. For most readers, that exploration will take them places they have not yet seen. Writings by many well-known Church scholars are brought together to give a broader and deeper meaning to the genesis event of the Restoration. Contributors include scholars such as Steven C. Harper, John W. Welch, Milton V. Backman Jr., Richard Lloyd Anderson, and Larry C. Porter. Their qualifications, research, and insights are impressive, and they have strived, in an evenhanded and rigorous way, to achieve the "coupling [of] historical study with …

Armenian Apocrypha Relating To Abraham, Michael E. Stone, E. Douglas Clark

BYU Studies

Over a decade ago while attending an annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature, I heard Professor Michael Stone mention he was working on a group of medieval Armenian texts containing traditions about the Patriarch Abraham. Having spent considerable time gathering every Abrahamic tradition I could find, I was excited at this news and asked when the work would be published. Professor Stone replied that it would not be soon. Since then, I have eagerly looked forward to this volume.

As one of Stone's many publications on Armenian apocrypha, and a sequel to two of those in particular ( …

Chan In Communist China: Justifying Buddhism's Turn To Practical Labor Under The Chinese Communist Party, Kenneth J. Tymick May 2014

Chan In Communist China: Justifying Buddhism's Turn To Practical Labor Under The Chinese Communist Party, Kenneth J. Tymick

Constructing the Past

A prominent Buddhist reformer, Ju Zan, and twenty-one other progressive monks sent a letter to Mao Zedong appealing to the congenial nature between the two parties at the dawn of the Communist takeover in China. Ju Zan took the opportunity to declare Buddhism's new emphasis on "shifting to productivity" in his letter, suggesting the religion's compatibility with the Communist Party. In fact, much of the Communist doctrine surrounding practical labor synchronized perfectly with the Buddhist school of Chan's teachings and tendencies, and, together with other monks, Ju Zan urged Buddhism to stray from its growing transcendentalist nature and back to …

Thoreau's A Week, Religion As Preservative Care: Opposing The Christian Doctrine Of Discovery, Manifest Destiny, And A Religion Of Subjugation, Robert Michael Ruehl May 2014

Thoreau's A Week, Religion As Preservative Care: Opposing The Christian Doctrine Of Discovery, Manifest Destiny, And A Religion Of Subjugation, Robert Michael Ruehl

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation argues for a rereading of Henry David Thoreau's A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849) as "Transcendental scripture writing." By placing his book in this genre, Thoreau's religious thinking comes to the fore. His book becomes a contextualized pilgrimage addressing three levels of human existence in the religious realm: (1) where we have been and are now, (2) where we could be, and (3) how to reach that next, better self with more intimate, liberative relationships with others. As he addresses human limitations and his hope for better human and nonhuman relationships, Thoreau articulates a religion …

Hic Est Uxor Mihei: How Roman Funerary Portraits Carve The Ideal Freedwoman, Nora Kassner May 2014

Hic Est Uxor Mihei: How Roman Funerary Portraits Carve The Ideal Freedwoman, Nora Kassner

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

This paper examines the depiction of Roman freedwomen (former slaves) in thirty-five late Republican and Augustan funerary portraits. Extant portraits utilize a complex visual and written vocabulary to reveal a wide variety of views of freedwomen’s status and agency. This paper relies upon analyses of the cultural climates of the late Republican and Augustan period, careful interrogation of the material evidence through the lens of both post-structuralist and affective theory, and the use of case studies. Ultimately, it argues that funerary portraits create diverse representations of the ideal freedwoman that become part of an ongoing cultural dialogue concerning the place …

Islamic Feminism: A Discourse Of Gender Justice And Equality, Breanna Ribeiro May 2014

Islamic Feminism: A Discourse Of Gender Justice And Equality, Breanna Ribeiro

Senior Theses

This paper examines Islamic feminism using structural methodology and the phenomenological approach to examine the component of Muslim feminists' activism that utilizes ijtihad and tafsir to reinterpret patriarchal rhetoric and highlight Islamic discourses that validate gender equality. These scholars and activists critically analyze Islamic theology by employing hermeneutics in order to produce Islamic exegeses that affirm social justice, gender equality, and liberation. Religion plays a critical role in building collective cultural identities; therefore, examining sacred texts' representation and prescription of gender roles and mores generates an understanding of the gender order in the community of believers, while simultaneously exposing contextual …

The Effect Of Perceived Organizational Support And Perceived Organizational Politics On Teacher Commitment: An Analysis Of Public And Non-Public Secondary Schools, Scott M. Sides May 2014

The Effect Of Perceived Organizational Support And Perceived Organizational Politics On Teacher Commitment: An Analysis Of Public And Non-Public Secondary Schools, Scott M. Sides

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current research was to comparatively explore and document similarities and differences in POS, POP, and teacher commitment within the two school settings (public and non-public) by analyzing the perceptions of teachers within secondary school settings within a mid-south state. Surveys were sent to teachers for completion. After the removal of seven outliers, 351 teacher surveys were included (public school teacher n = 243, non-public school teacher n = 108). To discern whether POS and POP significantly predicted organizational commitment (affective, continuance, and normative) of teachers and how these constructs differed within the school settings (public and …

香港助人工作者及教師對同性戀及自殘行為之觀點 = Perspectives Of Same-Sex Sexualities And Self-Harm Among Service Providers And Teachers In Hong Kong, Tse Shang, Denise Tang

《新自由主義下的新道德》研討會 NEO-MORALISM UNDER NEOLIBERALISM INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

This research study investigates the perspectives of service providers in working with Chinese lesbian and gay youth in Hong Kong secondary schools, and maps the relations between same-sex sexualities, religion, education, and self-harm. Service providers included secondary school teachers, social workers based on- and off-school sites, and lesbian/transgender activists working in non-government organizations serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. By studying the level of acceptance and tolerance of same-sex sexualities in schools, this study aims to provide further understanding into Hong Kong youth issues and to highlight the connections between deliberate self-harm behaviour and being a lesbian, gay, …

Feminist And New Feminist Perspectives On Mary: Renewal Or Retrieval?, Gloria Falcão Dodd May 2014

Feminist And New Feminist Perspectives On Mary: Renewal Or Retrieval?, Gloria Falcão Dodd

Marian Studies

Combining the idea of a priest’s spiritual marriage to the Church and Pope Paul VI’s title for Mary as Mother of the Church, Pope Francis joked with a group of seminarians: “If you don’t go to Our Lady as Mother, you certainly will have her as a mother-in-law! And this isn’t good.” In the midst of the many changes after Vatican Council II, Paul VI had observed the need to prevent misunderstandings, such as viewing Our Lady as a mother-in-law rather than a mother, or diminishing Marian devotion. Therefore, Paul VI wrote his 1974 encyclical, Marialis Cultus, describing three aspects …

Your Faith Has Saved You: A Literary Understanding Of The Relationship Between Physical Healings, Faith, And Salvation In Luke-Acts, James Benjamin Hussung May 2014

Your Faith Has Saved You: A Literary Understanding Of The Relationship Between Physical Healings, Faith, And Salvation In Luke-Acts, James Benjamin Hussung

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The two-volume first-century work, Luke-Acts, presumably written by Paul’s sometime companion, Luke the physician, follows the story of Jesus’s birth, earthly ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension in the first volume and then the spread of Christianity from Jerusalem to Rome by the apostles in the second. Within this story lies a recurring motif of physical healings from various diseases and even death. These healings are predominantly performed by Jesus; however, in Acts especially, the apostles also perform healings similar to those of Jesus. Often, these physical healings are accompanied by faith, forgiveness of sins, and salvation. This thesis has two …

International Health And Aging: Observation And Analysis Of Elderly Care In Migori, Kenya, Amy Correll May 2014

International Health And Aging: Observation And Analysis Of Elderly Care In Migori, Kenya, Amy Correll

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

While generally respected in Kenya, elders are not primary recipients of health care services in later life. This research documented the need for geriatric specific care and the availability of resources for seniors in Migori, Kenya. Lastly, a set of 5 recommendations was developed to guide the delivery of health services provided to older residents in this small village sector of 6000. After a literature review and analysis of existing demographic data, a needs assessment instrument was developed to guide gathering of relevant data from Migori. Using a research protocol approved through the WKU IRB Committee, the Primary Investigator interviewed …

Understanding The Mystery: Weighing Cessationist And Continuationist Debate Of Prophecy In The Pauline Epistles, Nicholas Bratcher May 2014

Understanding The Mystery: Weighing Cessationist And Continuationist Debate Of Prophecy In The Pauline Epistles, Nicholas Bratcher

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The use of spiritual gifts such as tongues and prophecy has been a major source of controversy within Christianity over the past century. As its use flourishes in Africa, Asia and South America, many in the Western Church remain skeptical of its use, some even questioning the true conversion of these "charismatic" Christians. This thesis seeks to weigh the relevance of this cessationist debate with what Paul’s true concerns are in his letters. As such, it both praises and critiques cessationist and continuationist argument using modern scholarship to determine Paul’s actual, intended meaning of his words. It weighs the text …

The Emergence Of Believer's Baptism As A Political Event, Jamey Yadon May 2014

The Emergence Of Believer's Baptism As A Political Event, Jamey Yadon

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

During the Protestant Reformation, the most well-known reformers left the classical church-state relationship largely unchanged. The early Anabaptists, who called for much faster changes than the Reformation’s leaders were attempting, argued for a separation of the church from the wider culture. The radical reformers were also the first to argue for the practice of believer’s baptism—that the church should only baptize those who had made a personal commitment to Christianity. Studied as a part of the historical narrative, the emergence of believer’s baptism is charged with political meaning. This project is an exploration of that significance: namely, that believer’s baptism’s …

Epistemology Through Buddhist Poetry: A Real Challenge To Western Thought, Sarah Littman May 2014

Epistemology Through Buddhist Poetry: A Real Challenge To Western Thought, Sarah Littman

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

While the Eastern and Western philosophical traditions are often perceived to be at odds with one another, by and large this is a result of a difference in approach and focus. Case in point, within George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s text, Philosophy in the Flesh, they challenge often overlooked assumptions within epistemology through argument and empirical data. They make the case that, much like the regulation of the heart or lungs, the mechanisms behind thought take place unconsciously. If true, this would imply that we cannot recognize the way we form our thoughts or use language. That is why the …
